Reviews for Portsmouth Boating Center
Great Fuel Stop, 2017-07-29
Captain: , Seaford, VA (975)

Stopped for diesel fill up after a windy day coming down the bay. Easy access to either fuel dock in a nice, calm, protected creek. Dockhand Ashley was friendly and helpful, and we will be back, maybe overnight next time.

Very close to shopping, 2016-11-14
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (500)

After 4 days out we went to this marina and was nicely greeted by staff to help us dock our boat and we also had the owner stop by to greet us. The rate was cheaper than others at $1.25 a foot. The bathrooms are not classy but they had hot showers and they were clean. The washer is free and the dryer is $1.00. Shopping for food was only a 10 minute bike ride to the Food Lion.

An ok port in a storm, 2013-10-26
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Just needed a place to tie up out of the wind while we could make arrangements for winter storage. Wifi at the dock is lofi, basically unusuable. Heads and showers were clean but very basic (curtain instead of door for toilets. But the price was good.

Fuel only for us., 2013-10-12
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

Put in for fuel on 10-11-13, as always great price, fast pumps & nice people. Usually always stop here for fuel on North & South trip.

Great place but limited room, 2012-12-09
Captain: , Charleston SC (743)

I put into this marina in September 2012 with broken engine mounts and a shattered shaft saver coupling. Mike (the owner) was really helpful. It was over labor day weekend. He and his staff ordered parts and had us going in the shortest time possible with a bill that really was fair. In November 2012, I stopped here again with a boat I was delivering. I had called Mike and asked him to order some special belts since the main engine drive belt had broken on this vessel on the way down. We arrived long after dusk and by 0800 the following morning, Mike had our belts on board and we were back on our way south.

There is a great collection of local live-a-boards to meet as well

Their diesel mechanic is first class. The only issue I have with them is both times we were relegated to the fuel dock due to space considerations (48' in September and 43' in November). I would still call ahead and try to stay here if I needed dockage in Portsmouth. If you are a smaller vessel (<40 ft) there are other alternatives.

Great service and support, 2012-12-08
Captain: , Alexandria Bay, NY (63)

Stopped for fuel and an overnight. Ended up being hauled in need of repairs for a rudder post leak found during morning checks. Owners Ken and Mike were more than accommodating. They were operating with reduced winter staff so I was able to facility much of the repairs myself and Ken pitched in performing some needed fiberglassing work. Will be sure to stop by again

Super marina...great service and support, 2012-07-15
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (154)

We arrived again at low tide. Keep to red as you motor in, with comfort of an easy 10'ft+ deep channel right to dockside at Portsouth Boating Center. Super thanks to Paul (dock master) and Mike Davis (Owner) for the great personal dock-side support getting secured. Will be back again for sure!!

All Around Excellence, 2012-03-14
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (11)

PBC are a group of very professional, courteous folks. Haul outs take no time at all. Great access to the Elizabeth River with well sheltered berths. My preference of two places on the river where I'll go for fuel.

Excellent fuel price, 2011-10-04
Captain: , Marathon, FL (458)

We normally buy fuel at this marina as we cruise up and down the ICW as they have the best price around. They are very friendly people and can't do enough to help with whatever is needed. They do not have too many slips for larger boats (40+), but they allowed us to stay tied up to their fuel dock for the night. Their dockage price is below any of the other marinas in the area.

unsafe area, 2010-11-02
Captain: , Westport,Ma (710)

My wife and I were followed by to young men while walking back from down town that shouted at us that we were in the "wrong" neighborhood. One employee after told us of a 14yo boy shot and killed around the corner for his coat! Altho the staff is friendly we will never stay there again and have informed all our boating friends not to also.

Friendly Fuel Stop, 2010-10-12
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (745)

The folks here are most accomodating. The price of diesel fuel yesterday, October 11, 2010, was $2.71 per gallon which included discounts for BoatUS, over 100 gallons and cash(check) and sales tax. I was informed that the price of diesel fuel from the wholesalers changes frequently. You should call the facility personally on the day you want fuel to confirm the price. AND several facilities do not quote the price including sales tax. Don't be surprised if the 5% tax is added after the fact.

Great Docks, 2010-07-24
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Pleasant marina staff. Marina store has the essentials. Restaurant top notch. Good location to walk to historic district and along river.

Competent, honest, and reasonably priced., 2010-04-26
Captain: , Twin Dolphin Marina (271)

The title says it all. Their yard workers seemed very knowledgeable, and respect the boats they work on. Mike, the yard manager, is good people. He'll listen to what you want done, recommend alternative solutions if applicable, and will get you taken care of. The most important thing is, these folks are honest and priced competatively.

Best Fuel Prices, 2010-04-14
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (42)

They usually have the lowest fuel prices in the area. Boat US Discount. Quantity Discount. Cash Discount (Personal Check Counts as Cash). Dockmaster and staff quite friendly.

Tops in service and location, 2009-11-04
Captain: , Chattanooga (327)

Stayed here for two months and every day was tops. Good service with courtesy car, super dock hands, proximity to great restaurants, shopping and cultural attractions.

Staff is really over the top in skills, attitudes and responsiveness. We will be back.

Perfect place to explore the lower Chesapeake. Yard is efficient and competent. We had a small diesel issue and a mechanic was on site in an hour with a quick solution for a reasonable rate.

Very Friendly Staff and Best Diesel Price, 2009-11-01
Captain: , South Portland, ME (537)

Staff is very friendly. Regularly the best price for diesel in the area. They fuel alot of the commercial traffic so they go through a lot of fuel. Just 10 minutes off the Elizabeth River about a half mile before mile marker 0 of the ICW. Wendyran us into town to watch NFL Football on Sunday.

good prices, friendly folks, 2009-10-25
Captain: , Miami, fl (3646)

good stop, they usually have the best diesel prices in the Norfolk area. Channel is well marked and much deeper than the 5' noted on some charts, I've never found less than 10'

staff is friendly and helpful.

Great little marina, 2009-10-05
Captain: , Marathon, FL (1264)

Karen, the Dockmaster, was very helpful and friendly. Even loaned us her car to go to the grocery store (about a mile). Best price we found this week for fuel.

good fuel prices, 2008-10-27
Captain: , Tampa (190)

Honest, dependable, reasonably priced, 2007-10-28
Captain: , orrs island maine (57)

This is a great little boat yard. When they say something will be done you can rest assured it will be done. When they give you a time frame your work is completed in that time frame. They do excellent work and will allow you to do as much as you want to do yourself.
The staff are knowledgable about boats and most of the workers have been there for many years...
Bill Hughes is the manager/dock master and he is the best boat yard manager we have ever met and we've been to many boat yards.

AOK, 2007-10-17
Captain: , Arlington,va (25)

Towed in and at their mercy. Extremely talented, fair and friendly.
A professional working marina, able to do any repair. Good fuel prices.

Fuel and service stop. Haul & B. Paint, 2007-05-16
Captain: , Sneads Ferry (28)

I lost a prop and broke my shaft and was towed into Portsmouth Boating Center. Decided to stay on the hard for the winter and let them do the work. This Marina has a very active group the can get a boat out and back in the water quickly without breaking the bank. Always returned calls.
I noticed they give fuel discounts for large fills and is a good fuel stop. The management took me to the downtown old portsmouth for dinning and gave me the locations of suppliers that I needed. Can not say enough good things about the Marina.
