Reviews for Port Hawkesbury Marina
Good facilities and location, 2016-07-22
Captain: , York, ME (1971)

Friendly club in a good location near the lock. We didn't go into town, so can't comment there. The facilities are clean and the docks are servicable, if not pretty. The marina is staffed by member volunteers on a rotating basis, the folks who were there that day were hospitable and helpful.

There's a small bar in the clubhouse if you want a cold beer. The restaurant next door, Barykin Bistro, is good.

One each washer and dryer, $1.25 each, but the dryer took three cycles to dry our one modest-sized load.

30A power and water was available on the docks. WiFi was only available inside the clubhouse. There was a strong signal on the dock, but nobody knew the password. Maybe it was from a nearby facility not managed by the club.

Marina agréable, un peu loin du centre-ville mais grand hardware store, supermarché et restaurants. Sommes passés hors saison, bureau fermé mais très bon accueil des résidents, douches et laundry disponibles. Payé $42,50 la nuit pour un 33 pi.

Super Friendly, 2015-09-11

The Strait of Canso Yacht Club is one of the friendliest and most welcoming facilities we have encountered. A member not only offered to drive us to the supermarket in town, but insisted on waiting for us while we shopped so he could bring us back to the boat! The club facilities are exceptionally clean and functional. The floating docks are somewhat exposed to wakes from boat and ship traffic out in the Straits, but we did not find it too uncomfortable. The adjacent government wharf was very filled up with commercial vessels, so one should not count on being able to tie up there. We did not find much in the way of restaurant options in town, but shopping choices were numerous. The walk from the marina was quite long and uphill.

Very helpful and friendly, 2015-08-12
Captain: , Moncton (198)

We stopped on way through to lakes. Someone had made a mess in overnight washrooms but member that was in marina stayed behind and opened up day washrooms and showers for us. Next day we had the need of a printer and another member drove us to his house to use his! Can be loud if train on shore starts up. Sobeys for food, drug stores, Candian Tire, etc all within 15min walk.

Clean Facilities, Friendly Folks, 2014-08-10

Our flotilla of 9 boats started our cruise here in July. Had free use of the party room for a reception and great support from the club volunteers in every aspect of our visit. Enjoyed free concert in the nearby park as well!

Nice stop with one drawback, 2014-07-31
Captain: , Marthas Vineyard (506)

Marina is a nice facility with friendly helpful volunteer staffers, just be aware that for now they only accept cash, even if you get hundreds of litres of fuel. Other than that, its great. Didn't get into the town.

Great Stop for Cruisers in Transit, 2013-07-18
Captain: , Whitby (370)

We stayed here for two nights starting on 2013-07-15.
This is a club run marina with members doing Officer of the Day duties. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful.
No one responded to our VHF hail, but as we entered the basin folk immediately stopped what they were doing and offered assistance with direction to a slip (floating docks in good repair) and docking.
The facilities are very good and quite clean. Potable water and 30 amp electric on the docks, two computers for member /visitor use, good WiFi signal, washrooms, showers, laundry ($1.25 each wash and dry), diesel and gasoline ($1.65 per litre).
I didn't take note of depths, but we had no issues at all and ample water even at low tide (6 foot draft).
Good supplies 3/4 mile away. Large grocery store (Sobey's), very well stocked liquor store (NSLC), bank, Timmie's, and Canadian Tire (with propane refill). Taxi ride back to marina with groceries was $6.00 plus tip.
There is a café / bakery ( at the old railway station a two minute walk from the marina. Awesomely good bread and great cappuccino!
Only negative is a little train noise.

Fuel and food, 2013-07-17
Captain: , Coconut Grove, FL (589)

Fuel price was very high, $1.60/lt vs $1.40 at St Peter.
Great little restaurant next to club.

Great place, 2013-07-16
Captain: , Toronto, ON (1749)

This is a first rate facility, if a monument to government stupidity and ineptitude. Get someone to tell you the story.... Suffice it to say that the marina is now staffed entirely by volunteers from the Strait of Canso Yacht Club and so service may be a bit lacking, but it will be freindly.

Clean facility with friendly staff., 2012-10-13
Captain: , Barrachois Harbour NS, Canada (2526)

Outstanding SCYC clubhouse with two computers for members/guests. WiFi signal very good and QUICK! CoEd washroom/shower available for visiting vessels (24 hrs.) which is SPOTLESS! Additonal washrooms available in the clubhouse during business hours. Staffed by volunteers who take turns as OOD. Secure access to docks. Highly recommend this marina. Nice place. Ice cubes are not available, but blocks are.

port hawesbury marina, 2012-08-16
Captain: , toronto (499)

nice very clean marina which is club owned and operated. The staff
are great. Supplies are close but that hill is a bear. Protection was very good but the winds where light when we stayed.

Great folks, 2012-08-07

Great place on the canal. Steep walk up the hill, but worth the walk.

Nice town and nice staff., 2010-10-16

Recommend as a good place to stay, eat, and shop.

Strait of Canso Yacht Club, 2009-07-19
Captain: , Port Colborne , Ontario (432)

Very friendly staff, shopping is a 15 minute walk up a very steep hill, there is Canadian Tire, Sobey's supermarket, Tim Hortons, beer & liquor store, banks, restaurants, fast food places plus there is a Wall Mart that we never saw. Lots of shopping. Easy approach to marina. A new larger facility is under construction.
