Reviews for Port City Marina
We'd return, 2017-08-15
Captain: , Clear Lake Shores TX (270)

Everyone was very friendly. Manager, Pete, even offered use of his car if we needed it. There was a night watchman on duty. Sunday eve pot luck dinner was fun. Easy walk into town. Only negatives are temporary showers and restrooms are small and need more regular cleaning. Our 4.5' draft stirred up the mud at low tide coming in.

Will Return, 2017-07-25
Captain: , santa barbara (771)

Based on recommendations of locals, left boat there for several months - no problems. Definitely some open slips, but filling as more cruisers become aware of the facilities. No current or chop inside. Marina staff not always visible but normally available. Staff was always responsive to any requests, including assisting with lines on arrival and offering to assist with same on departure. New floating docks with good power and water. Dock entry is open, however, area is patrolled, we never saw any people on the dock that were not associated with marina boats. Friendly locals, understand there is a sunday evening event for marina guests. Some docks are a bit distant from the office and parking but dock carts are available and staff always willing to drive you via golf cart. New restaurant just opened by marina office, good food, expect more development soon.

There is a free shuttle close to the marina that will take you into town. Riverwalk is pleasant alternative.

Airport is 10 minutes away.

Management response:
Hi Captain Ron, we're glad you enjoyed our marina and we could be of assistance. If there is any way we can improve, please don't hesitate to let us know. We are excited about the new development happening around us and hope that it is completed when you return. We look forward to having you back!

Not really ready yet..., 2017-05-19
Captain: , Chicago, IL (21)

Of all the marinas I've seen this one had the most open slips... I think the reasoning is they don't really do anything for transients, and most of their clientele seems to be people from Raleigh who keep boats there.

The location is OK, it's about a 10 minute walk/ 4 blocks to the dining downtown (very little shopping though in the area, no drug stores. All in all the place was nice enough, but we skipped over the city dock a few blocks down (which are in a slightly better location) because we thought we'd be getting more here... and really we didn't get anything we wouldn't have had there.

The docks are clean and the security guard is nice when there. No dockmaster/etc. on site ever. Be prepared to handle your own lines.

The bathrooms are in a temporary trailer. The trailer itself used to be nicer but now it's not as nice as the last because the last wasn't ADA compliant and the city made them change it out (which is stupidly funny, floating marina docks--including this one--are never ADA compliant). They were reasonably clean, not daily cleaned but also not heavily used. Very tiny inside with literally nowhere to sit your stuff while you take an army shower. You'll probably just stay on board for bathroom use.

Free ice but it was locked and when we were leaving in the morning there would be nobody on site until after noon we were told.

The docks are unsecured to enter. There's a fair amount of walking traffic going by. They do have a security guard at night but not 24 hours.

I spent $150 on roaming data while in Wilmington because their wifi purposefully blocked VPNs (a fact I had confirmed by the vendor who installed their wifi).

No slop / oil waste disposal, because (and I quote the reason I was told): 'we're not a working marina'

No laundry on site... I get you're building the buildings but how hard is a trailer for laundry? Uber $10/each way or so to laundry.

Great location, 2017-05-15
Captain: , Merritt Island Florida (250)

Stayed for a week, nice new floating docks, convenient location to historic Downtown Wilmington. Personnel were very helpful and friendly. Current facilities are in trailers, however plans are for new facilities to be in condo building that is going to be built onsite. 2 restaurants nearing completion on site, on scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend. A fun city to visit with lots to do and see. Will definitely be a five star marina when completed. We will be back.

Management response:
Hi Captain, thanks for the review. We look forward to the restaurants' and facilities' completions as well. We're glad to hear you found our staff helpful and friendly. We hope to have you back.

Convenient, friendly, shiny new facilities, 2017-04-18
Captain: , Portsmouth RI (730)

We wintered our 56ft sailboat here and had an excellent experience. Marina staff are extremely helpful; floating docks are wide and solid; berths are ample with full finger piers. Except for T-docks, strong river current not felt. Debris from river does float in. Downtown Wilmington with its Riverwalk (goes through marina), nice restaurants and bars is right there. No repair facilities onsite but excellent mechanic, diver, etc. come to the marina. Great for crew changes or pickups as small ILM airport very nearby serves most cities via Charlotte, Atlanta, PHL or La Guardia.

Management response:
Hi Captain Jaime, thank you for your review. You were a pleasure to have and we hope you will come back!

Outstanding Marina, 2017-02-04
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (451)

This new marina is outstanding in every respect. Their modern floating docks are protected from the river current. Everyone working there goes out of their way to make sure your stay is perfect. The dock master, assistant dock master, and even the nighttime security guard, will do anything for you. The docking assistance is first rate! It is an easy walk to downtown and soon there will be two restaurants on the premises. In the future there will be retail shops and a hotel adjacent to the marina. This is the best thing that has ever happened to Wilmington, and it makes this great little city a true destination for boats of all sizes.

Management response:
Thank you for your review, Captain Vaughan. We hope to have you back!

It's Only Getting Better, 2016-11-07
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

We spent a week at Port City Marina, our first time there. The location is terrific only blocks from all of downtown Wilmington with shops, restaurants, theaters, and much more. Take a walk along the River Walk and enjoy seeing boats and the downtown waterfront. Our canine crew enjoyed that walk several times a day.

The marina is top notch with concrete floating docks and friendly knowledgable dockhands. Plus there is even more coming. There are two onsite restaurants nearing completion, a bandstand area where they hold events, and new boater facilities coming. There are dozens of reasons to take this trip up the river. The marina is terrific now and will be even better as each enhancement is completed. We look forward to returning to see all of the improvements.

Management response:
Hi Captain Karen, thanks for your review. We look forward to the enhancements being completed as well and we can't wait to have you back!

Look forward to a return visit, 2016-09-06
Captain: , Holden Beach, NC (60)

We stopped in for a single night Aug 27. The planned facilities once completed will be fantastic with a great location. It is a work in progress now with temporary restrooms, showers, office ... The marina is tucked nicely off the Cape Fear and provides top notch slips in calm water. Many restaurants and shops within an easy walk or a short free Wilimington shuttle ride. The staff is very attentive and accommodating. A little more attention to timely pumping out the showers holding tank til the final showers are ready is suggested. When the master plan is complete Port City Marina will be a 5 star marina.

Management response:
Hi Captain Dale, thank you for your review. We are just as excited as you are for the facilities to be completed. We apologize about the shower holding tank issue and will pump the holding tank out more frequently in the future. We look forward to having you back!

Great up-and-coming facility!, 2016-08-29
Captain: , Raleigh (192)

Just spent two nights at PCM. Finest customer service we have experienced at ANY marina anywhere.
We arrived after closing the first night but Josh answered the marina phone and gave us all of the info we needed to get docked. Everyone - particularly the night watch guys Dwayne and Scot - introduced themselves to us and provided their cell phone numbers "just in case". Dwayne even offered to pick us up in the golf cart if we needed a midnight trip to the head! (It was a pretty good hike from our slip)
I think we were the first ones to use the 30A receptacle at our slip. It was WONDERFUL for once to have a receptacle that wasn't worn out to the point of a twist-lock plug falling out. The docks are new and are floating concrete.
The free downtown shuttle has a stop roughly two blocks from the shore end of D dock, in front of the Convention Center at the corner of Hanover and Nutt.
Many restaurants on Front Street with about a 5 block walk.
Right now the heads/showers are in self-contained trailers up near the temporary marina office. They are new, clean and air conditioned.

Management response:
Hi Captain, we're glad you enjoyed our facilities and we hope to have you back!

new and up coming marina, 2016-07-26
Captain: , wilmington nc (30)

we heard about this new marina throught the triton out of ft lauderdale. we contacted peter and josh about a long term slip and they said when will you get here. we pretty much got to pick what slip we wanted which was nice. upon arriving, it was discovered that they didnt have the power requirements we needed. we had to move and a couple weeks later they had a new pedestal installed for us in the slip we wanted as well as two larger cleats. we hope to make this our new home port for the next couple of years. a great hurricane hole with steel pilings and concrete docks. we are watching the daily improvements take place and it is nice to watch. peter and josh have gone to all extremes to help with any problems. even letting us use their cars. two resturants on site opening in the next two months as well. location close to town is great, as we walk into town every night. great night life with live bands for free every fri night. ships store close by would be nice but everything we have needed was within four miles. going to be a happening marina when done. they are polishing the gem right now. only down side is the floating logs and trees coming down the river but this has nothing to do with them. we have told other capts about this place as we work on a 110' yacht and owner loves the town. it will be a great place for lage privite yachts to hold over. prices are great too..

Management response:
Thank you for the review. It was our pleasure to make accommodations for your boat. We love having you here! About the ship store, our plan is to have one in the new development going up behind the marina, as well as to have our permanent marina office there.

Excellent stop!, 2016-07-25
Captain: , Carolina Beach, NC (70)

We made a stop at Port City Marina for 1 night. Great facility with floating concrete docks and new construction (even though parts of it are still under construction). Josh the dockmaster answered our call immediately on the VHF radio, had us standby for a couple mins so he could meet us at the slip, helped us tie up, helped us get our power cable plugged in, and made sure we were squared away. Excellent customer service attitude, which is something that really goes a long way with me...we'll definitely be back.

The location is's a few blocks along the River Walk to the center of the historic downtown Wilmington waterfront, with plenty of restaurants, bars, live music, coffee houses, shops, etc., to choose from. (Two restaurants plus permanent restroom/shower/etc facilities are still under construction at the marina...but the temporary restrooms/showers were clean and climate controlled, and were fine in my opinion.) The marina is just past the end of the Wilmington City Docks and the waterfront Hilton, and I really didn't find the walk to the center of downtown to be any big deal. It's a great location, in my opinion, better equipped than the Wilmington City Docks, and a stop well worth the trip up the Cape Fear River.

Management response:
Thank you for the review David! It was a pleasure having you and we hope to see you again.

Location location location, 2016-07-25
Captain: , Fort worth (202)

This is a great stop with brand new floating docks. It's so new that there are no permanent shore facilities for the marina. That didn't bother us at all.
Pete and Josh run the marina very professionally and were more than helpful.
We had a front row seat to the July 4 fireworks and a 3 block walk to historic downtown Wilmington. We had some great meals and enjoyed the town very much.
Nate Davis at Davis Diesel fit us in and repaired our old funky generator. He was great. Danny Martin fixed an AC problem. It was a new unit that was installed improperly. He had us up and running in about an hour. Best of all he billed the company in Charleston who put it in wrong. Gotta love that.
We'll be there again.

Management response:
Hi Clarke, we're very glad you enjoyed our marina. We look forward to seeing you again!

Not There Yet, 2016-07-03
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (986)

Hopefully in a short period this marina will achieve a 5 star rating. Right now you enjoy great docks and a professional marina staff. We are spending 5 days for the 4th of July weekend. WI FI is excellent. No fuel, no pump out yet. Cutting the tall weeds that have overgrown next to the side walks would be nice. Portable toilets should be closer to the transient slips, as you need to take vacation to walk to them. The live performance, and food trucks were cancelled for some unknown reason last night. Bottom line - right now they have a ways to go but we will be back!!

Management response:
Thank you for the review. Unfortunately, Frankie Ballard was cancelled due to water from the midday storm ruining some of his equipment. Pier management is working on a reschedule date, and will post it on social media (under the name Pier 33 Wilmington) once it is decided. We are working on having the pumpout and fuel systems completed. The fuel should be completed by the end of August, and the pierside pumpout system and pumpout barge should be completed by the end of September. We look forward to having you back!

Excellent cruising destination, 2016-05-26
Captain: , Egg Harbor, NJ (110)

As mentioned in other reviews, facility is still work in progress re heads, showers and other dockside ammenities. However, DM Josh (from Annapolis area) is the best, and location to town makes it all come together. German Cafe was great, plus many other restaurants, shops, museums...and Convention Center's historic photos and stories of the area not to be missed.

Management response:
Hi Gary, thank you for your review. Our facilities are under construction and believe us, we can't wait until they are completed. We hope you will come visit us then!

A gem of a diversion 12 miles off the magenta line, 2016-04-06
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

We were here for a few days to visit with family and were very happy withthis first class operation of the marina. Peter and Josh were right down to assist us landing and provided lots of local information. The temporary showers and toilets are OK, wer wewre on the face dock and were very close to the head of the ramp and office. water hot, very clean, but this will be a better place for boats once the shoreside supports are built out. Still gave it a five star for the area and staff. Note: DO NOT get the bieniets at Bourbon Street, way too heavy and too much sugar, but do visit the Serpentarium, a world calss facility. As someone into reptiles, this was one of the best presentaions i've ever seen. There was a sweet bike ride around Greenfield Lake, a 10 mile route. While we were there a week ago, the Azalias were in full bloom. The Riverwalk is one of the attractions of this revitalized waterfront we enjoyed immensely.

Management response:
Hi Bob, thank you for the kind review. We are looking forward to completion of our facilities and hope to host you again then, if not before!

folie a deux, 2016-04-05
Captain: , Churn creek (21)

will be a great marina when completed. floating docks first class. temporary toilets and showers o.k. location in downtown wilmington very good. wilmington is a lovely town to walk around in spring time. worth the 12 miles off the icw up the cape fear river. lots of bars and restaurants nearby. didnt see much in the way of laundry, hardware, groceries and boat supplies within walking distance but we had friends with a car.

Management response:
Thank you for the review. When our facilities are completed, we will have all of the things you didn't see this time around. We hope you will come back when our facilities are completed!

Hidden Gem, 2016-02-09
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (10)

Port City Marina is a lovely facility with great staff who facilitate a phenomenal atmosphere. Its within walking distance from downtown and we have been fortunate to be able to use local vendors and contractors whislt moored at Port City Marina. I can also confirm that their internet speeds are great and the shore power is stable, we have been on shore power for three months without any problems. I highly recommened Port City Marina as a gerat stop on an east coast adventure, the only risk being that it might become your new homeport!!

Management response:
Hi John, you were a pleasure to have at our marina and we thank you for the kind review. Come see us again soon!

Future Gem, 2016-01-03
Captain: , Vergennes, VT (85)

With the dock and temporary facilities in place, you can see how incredible the place is going to look when complete. This will be a very busy place in the coming months

Management response:
Hi Eric, we love having you at our marina and are glad you can see our vision for the future!

Location, facilities, and area are wonderful, 2015-12-08
Captain: , Moyock, NC (1084)

The facilities are in the process of being built. However, the new docks are in place and work really well. There's a free trolly within a block that runs every 20 minuntes to the historic and entertainment center. There are many nice restaurants and bars. The Dixie Grille has the best breakfast in town on Market Street and the Ghost Walk Tour from the Black Cat Shoppe, also on Market Street, is a worthwhile entertaining evening that highlights the older hauted homes on the hill overlooking the water front town. The extensive Wilmington Railroad Museum has history, memoribilia, and a large operating exhibit of model trains. The River Walk runs all along the water front with many interesting shops and places to eat. Or you can just sit on the benches over looking the river and the USS Battleship North Carolina.

Management response:
Hi Sandra, thank you for the kind words on our location, facilities, and the area around us. We are looking forward to our facilities being completed and hope you will come visit us again!

On it's way to a great marina, 2015-11-16
Captain: , Hingham, MA (1079)

The staff here is very nice. This is a new and in-progress marina with very limited facilities. In 2016, the marina will have showers, laundry, and restaurants. The trailor showers that are currently in place are disappointing and about the size of the head on my sailboat. However, the location and the new docks are great.
Note: do not do laundry at Azaleas (closest laundry) - we took an Uber here - very sketchy/unsafe area.

Management response:
Thank you for the review. We appreciate the compliment on our staff, location, and docks. We are looking forward to our new facilities being completed and hope to host you again when they are.

Great spot, will be fantastic when finished, 2015-11-10
Captain: , Miami (168)

Incredibly welcoming staff and beautiful new floating docks. Good room inside to turn around (82ft). Right off downtown Wilmington within 5 minutes of many restaurants and shops.
Very efficient in organising fuel and other needs. Thank you!

Management response:
Hello CapnKimbo, thank YOU! We really enjoy reading reviews like this one and hope to host you again sometime soon!

Southport Yacht Club visit this past weekend, Nov 7, 2015, 2015-11-09
Captain: , Southport Marina (10)

I only give Port City a 4 star rating because it isn't finished yet. I know once the facility is finished, it will be a 5 star marina. The staff was very accomodating for our group and made every effort to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The future amenities being built around the marina will definitlely establish this area as a premier destination along the Wilmington river front. I highly recommend!

Management response:
Hi Steven, thank you for your review. We are looking forward to the future amenities being completed as well and hope you will come visit us when they are, if not before!

Great place to visit Wilmington!, 2015-10-30
Captain: , Stuart, fl (10)

We stayed here for 6 weeks. Brand new marina with state of the art floating docks. Great place for a week or more stay to explore the city and events. Weekly rates are a bargain. Pete and Josh are the kind of people who make sure everything is perfect! Wi-fi is now working. It's too far to walk downtown but the free trolly is fine and Uber charged us $4 to get back one night. Once the resort is finished this marina will be "The place to stay"!

Management response:
Hi Doug, thank you for the kind review. We love having you at our marina!

Beautiful Docks, 2015-10-28
Captain: , Morehead City (390)

Beautiful Docks, these are the best/strongest made docks I have ever seen. The only thing missing is a rubber finder/rub rail. If you rub the dock it is wood.

The price for transcients is $1.75 a foot plus $10.00 per day for 50 amp power. This is too much given you can stay at the City dock for $1.25 and $5.00 and be much closser to town.

I was concerned about current inside the marrina but when i walked around the marina during peak flow in the river there was very little current once inside the fairways a couple of slips.

I only gave a 4 star instead of 5 because of the price.

Management response:
We try to provide the highest quality marina at a reasonable price, and apologize that our pricing is not what you were hoping for. In the case that you are a BoatUS member, we offer transient pricing of $1.50 per foot. Thank you for pointing out our well-made docks and lack of current inside the basin. We would love to host you again sometime!

Pleasant discovery, 2015-09-11
Captain: , Green Cove Springs,Fl (104)

We had reservations at Wilmington City Docks but when 15-20 winds blew in the docks were pretty much inaccessible so we continued a little way north and came across Port City Marina. What a gem! First class marina! Peter and Josh are very professional, friendly and helpful. This new marina has state-of-the-art floating docks, deep water, is well-protected and is easy to get in and out of. Very close to downtown, within walking distance, or if you prefer you could choose to ride the FREE trolley system. There is a lot of shopping in the downtown area too! We enjoyed a performance at UNC Wilmington - about a 10 minute taxi ride away. We were very pleased with our experience here and hope you will be as well.

Management response:
We loved reading this and think it speaks for itself- thank you! Come back and see us anytime.

Open/Operating, 2015-09-10
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (432)

Open. Friends tell me $14/foot month-to-month, $12/foot annual contract. This is a bit steep for the Cape Fear River. They've run events and promoted quite a bit, but a bit of a work-in-progress. Certainly not yet posh and splendorous as marketed. I really hope this place will be the showpiece the drawings depict. However, every date they publish has been missed.

They have bath/shower facilties in trailers. No fuel pumps yet, very spartan. Abysmally slow, sporadic construction going on forever around the marina. Will be a great place once the dust settles (literally).

The city and various investors are a little disjointed in their plans to make condo complexes, hotels, restaurants, and shops down there, but will be a showcase by 2020, I'd imagine, provided no recession recurs.

Management response:
Thank you for the review. We are looking forward to when the construction surrounding the marina is completed as well and hope you will come visit us then, if not before!

Not fully finished, but looking great., 2015-09-10
Captain: , Seven Oaks, South Carolina (245)

We came here out of desperation and found the staff very helpful and willing to work to accomodate us on very short notice. Pete was there to greet us after hours and helped us not only tie up, but get power connected. Everything is new and some things aren't quite finished, such as the lack of WiFi, though the antennas are in place. Just some more wiring to be completed.

Management response:
Hello Craig, thank you for the kind review. Our WiFi is up and running now- come and see us again!

Great New Addition, 2015-07-06

First class docks and staff. Still a work in progress but what I see is to be liked.
