Reviews for Ponce Yacht and Fishing Club
Nice and Curt, 2017-06-16
Captain: , Key West (10)

The staff is fine and you can get what you need here. I pulled in on a 45' M/V I am delivering and rented a car to get places as it is a bit remote from the town. For true marine supplies I had to drive to San Juan/ West Marine. People will leave you alone and at the same time not super friendly, you should keep up appearances here. WiFi is spotty at best and goes in and out so it is best if you have your own plan. There is a beach to visit but visitors to this private club are not allowed use of the pool or gym. Dress up for the restaurant. It has been a perfectly nice stay here but I am looking forward to moving on. This is a good place to have minor repairs done.

A good Port of Entry, 2017-06-14
Captain: , Plymouth (40)

I cleared into the States whilst the boat was at anchor. CBP met me at the Yacht Club cafe, where all of the paperwork was completed. As I have found in the past, the US CBP staff were very professional and friendly and made the whole process very quick - about 10 minutes - and easy. A visit to the boat wasn't necessary. Once the formalities were over they were able to give me some good advice and ideas on things to do and see around Ponce and beyond.

The following day I took a slip in the Marina where I spent an enjoyable week.

Most slips comprise a pair of piles, a pair of cleats on the dock and nothing in between. The finger pontoons have no cleats. Both the dock and the finger pontoons are fixed.

There is a potable water outlet on each slip plus 30A and 50A electricity. Wifi is sometimes slow at the slip (D34) but I was always able to stream music and make WhatsApp voice calls. In the marina bar/cafe/ restaurant area the wifi is a lot faster.

At $2/beer and $8/burger the prices are significantly lower than, say, the Bahamas. The staff are helpful and courteous and the permanent berth holders are friendly too. The washrooms and showers were clean and kept that way. The swimming pool is for private yacht club members only.

I really enjoyed my stay.

Great marina and friendly staff. Good food a the deli bar. BUT whatevr you do.....don't accept B-19 as a slip. It is and is reputed to be the rolliest slip in the marina, Check your assigned slip before you accept it.
Diesel $2.50 and gas $3.16 gal. Laundry was down, showers are good and hot. Must take a taxi or rent a car to provision. Do enjoy the boardwalk, good food and music!

Nice facility, 2017-04-07
Captain: , Scottsdale (421)

This is a community oriented marina, with a kids playground and pool. They also have a big adult pool, tennis and basketball courts, and spacious community areas.

We were placed on a t-dock due to our 20' beam and the wind (20-25 kts) and swells bounced us around making for difficult sleeping conditions until the wind and outside seas died down around 1am.

Across the bay there are multiple restaurants within walking distance (which also had competing loud bands playing until 10 or 11 at night, but we liked the music so it didn't bother us much).

1.25 per foot unless you are placed on a t-dock or the fuel dock, where the price is 2.00 per foot. Electricity is metered as is the water (.50 per gallon).

Good for extended stay, 2016-10-02
Captain: , Hingham, MA (1079)

Due to the anchoring in the area not being optimal, we chose to stay here while we waited on parts to be delivered. This is a nice club and the members and staff treated us very well. I did not like having to wear a wrist band the entire week that we were there.
Warnings: (1) the surge comes around the point and really wacks the boats around in the slip. Be sure to have plenty of lines and fenders in place. (2) the music from the boardwalk and other boaters is extremely loud and goes until late night.

Good value club marina, 2016-05-08
Captain: , Melbourne FL (120)

This is a sailing and fishing club with a marina that accepts transients at a good value $4.5/foot/week. The office staff speak English and are efficient but do not go out of their way to be friendly to boats who will only be here for a few days. If you anchor you are closer to the 12 food and drink stalls and karaoke on the Malechon. I think it is possible to leave a dinghy on the small dock north of the anchorage to landward of the locked gate. In the marina the music is not too bad and stops about 11pm most nights and by midnight on Saturday. Thrifty car hire picked me up free and charged $160 for 4 days.

Ponce yacht and fishing club, 2016-04-14
Captain: , Leamington, Ontario (710)

We are a sailboat, 47 feet, 6 foot draft, 66 air draft. Called the Ponce yacht and fishing club to request they call customs for us, they refused. We were then told that we could call from their office, but would cost $10. Went in to office, made the call to customs, phone located right under an a/c unit, very hard to hear. Informed by customs to travel to airport to check in. Ponce yacht and fishing club employee told me that I could NOT leave dinghy at dinghy dock. I said I just paid $10 for that priviliege, she told me that was for the phone call, I had to move the dinghy, it was not allowed to be left there while I went to CBP offices. RIP OFF! Very ignorant employee, will not ever use their facility, will anchor in anchorage just outside of club, good holding and lots of room.

Very nice service, 2016-02-06
Captain: , Seattle (330)

We almost never stay in marinas but for $4.5/foot/week with a nice pool who wouldn't. If you cant stand noise (why are you in a marina?) you may not enjoy it here as the music on the weekends is pretty loud. But we loved it. There was a band playing classic latin tunes for the old timers and the heartwrenchingly beatiful music was lovely. Familys out strolling and smileson every face. truly an awesome place to be for a week to recharge and get a few things done. great provisioning is a $10 cab ride away at the Pueblo or the Santiago Brothers cash and cary (for the deep provisioning). Sams club, walmart, homedepot, tj maxx and a MEGA Marshals were top atractions for the fairer crew.

Very nice place to spend a week, 2016-02-05
Captain: , Lakeland (997)

We stayed for 5 days. If you stay more than 2, you should stay (or pay for) a week. The weekly rate is a real deal. The staff was helpful. Excellent docks. There is a charge for water, but very reasonable. Facilities are nice. The on-site restaurant was not too great. On the weekends, La Guancha (the boardwalk nearby) is open and has lots of food choices. There is a steady stream of loud salsa and merengue music from the boardwalk on weekends, but we didn't mind. Enterprise rental cars picked us up and dropped us off when done. Ponce is a great place to explore. We took a 2-hour drive up into the mountains as well -- it was gorgeous! Bottom line: You can't beat the price and its a great place to explore.

No more tranient dinghy dock, 2016-01-21
Captain: , city island (382)

Many reviews besides active captain, state that there is a $10 per person to bring dinghy to the club, and use their facitilities. (which apparently annoyued several cruisers to begin with) That is no longer the case.

Although I rated poor since I was turned away, the facility is very nice and we were disappointed.

If you need a marina though, it is a very good spo, even though a cab ride is needed to get into Ponce.

This is a Gem, 2016-01-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (251)

We arrived on a Holiday and the only person working was the security guard. He told us we could come and take an empty slip and pay the next day. The rates were $1.25 per foot, cheaper for longer stays. The docks are concrete. Amenities include adult pool, toddler pool, showers, sauna, tennis courts, basketball, golf putting greens, bar, restaurant, laundry, fuel dock, and close to the Malecon. We used water and electric for one day, filled our tanks, rinsed the boat, showered, and charged everything for all of $2.46 total. Water and electric is metered. Diesel was $1.86 per gallon and gas was $2.17 per gallon. Very friendly staff!

Very Relaxing, 2015-05-03
Captain: , Halifax NS. (392)

SV Lequesteau

Decided to spend the week. It was actually cheaper than paying the daily rate. It's a fishing club that takes in transients so is geared more for the local members. That being said we were treated very well. The staff were very friendly to the point where I had to ask one of them to call a mechanic for me. BTW got a great mechanic. Cesar out of Salinas came in a solved my alternator issues that 2 other mechanics in the U.S. couldn't!! His number is 787-413-4948. The slips can be a bit rolly at times but we didn't find it uncomfortable. If it's too rolly for you, you can anchor. Laundry only had one washer and one dryer so,we waited for our turn. Easy walk over to the boardwalk where they had several food vendors and music in the evening. We rented a car and they came in a picked us up. All the big box stores are here so getting what you need isn't hard. All in all not a bad place to provision and rest

Great docks, friendly staff, and amplified surge and music, 2015-03-18
Captain: , Hampton, VA (2573)

We were received with open arms to the extend of moving another boat to make room for us on a T-head. Dock hand took our lines (you have to ask of the dockhand to help since members all have permanent docklines). Good power and water.

Onsite resturant and cafeteria; Both very good. Cafeteria is great for lunch!. Great access to boating related parts and service in Ponce.

Club members very engaging and approachable.

Finally office staff are very friendly.

I scratch my head wondering how my experience is so positive compared to that of other reviewers....but not really. I saw several obnoxious cruisers passing through

OK for a short stop, 2014-12-04
Captain: , Saquatucket (105)

Still rolly even at the dock. Plenty of security and services are a short cab ride away. Many restaurants along the Board walk which were good and reasonably priced.

Good Yacht Club, 2014-01-20
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (132)

This is a private yacht club, is not a public or commercial marina. Very good installations, concrete docks etc. not much service around for the regular cruiser, not dock hands etc. however good location to stop for provisioning or touring in the beautiful Ponce. Friendly office staff.

Good for a one night stay, 2013-05-24
Captain: , Seattle, WA (415)

We sent an email regarding getting our boat hauled and painted. We had heard the yard was awesome but when we didn't get a response back from the marina we arranged somewhere else. The yacht club is not close to anything have to have a car for anything you want even a resteraunt. as stated earlier they cater to yacht club members not transients. Good place for a one night stop on the way to.....

Found it nice and the people friendly, 2013-03-01
Captain: , Portland, OR (716)

We called ahead a week and a half and asked if we could ship some packages from the U.S. to the yacht club, and then when we showed up we would spend a night and collect the packages. Sophie, the marina manager who spoke good english said no problem. We contacted them a day ahead of arrival to make sure a slip was available for our catamaran, and again no problem. We arrived in the morning, called on channel 68 and told to go to fuel dock. Once at the fuel dock, we walked to our office, recieved a map to town and marina, and paid our dockage and collected our packages. Everyone was pleasant and helpful. This is not a marina, it is a yacht club, so transients are not thier main business. We had a pleasant stay. Used the laundry which worked well, but the machines and the room that houses them are somewhat worn down. There is some surge in the marina, but not too bad.

a place to skip - not nice people, 2012-05-02
Captain: , miami,fl (2241)

we went into ponce to clear in from the dr - we had trouble getting anyone to answer the radio but when they did they said we could anchor and dink in - we did and you have to anchor so far out that it is very rolly - even in calm seas -
dingy dock cost and incredible $10/person/day - and there are almost no facilities except laudry -
we asked about checking in and were told we had to go into town and they called us a taxi - when we got there c&i asked why we did not call in first and we said we had no phone and were told we should have used one at the marina -
the folks there have an incredible bad attitude and make it very clear that they did not want us there and we were really not welcome -
we have stopped all over the western caribbean and central caribbean and never had anyone come close to the we do not want you attitude that these folks showed

Cheap for the long run, 2011-05-15
Captain: , Kingston, Ontario, Canada (558)

We stayed at Ponce for two weeks. The weekly rate ($ 5 / ft / week on the end of a T dock) was quite cheap compared to the daily rate. Water and electricity was cheap, but an additional charge. Aside from the office staff, even after two weeks - I couldn't identify a single employee. Nobody took our lines. It looked like they had no staff, but they were invisible. Security is good. There was a bar, but we never used it. Music from the bars on shore every evening was a nuisance. Most nights we had to sleep with ear plugs due to dualling nightclubs.

Ponce Yacht Club, 2011-04-02
Captain: , South Freeport, ME (320)

Pretty facilities, but I agree that the VHF is not well monitored. We did pay for use of dinghy dock, showers, etc. They can call a taxi if you want to go into town. Music from the Malecon nearby can be heard in the marina well into the night.

Expensive and not friendly or helpful, 2011-03-18
Captain: , Port St Lucie (514)

This is a reasonably good facility with the worst personell I've seen. If it wasn't for a good facility in a good location I'd give it a single star. It was like pulling teeth to get a reservation on the phone. Then when we were close and called in they didn't have the reservation anyway. When I approached the marina for the first time her directions were impossible. There was no docking help but we don't need that anyway. Finding the office isn't easy and when you get there two or three people work behind the counter. I was the only customer in there and I think I could have waited an hour for someone to help if I hadn't finally asked one of them to register me. Next day I saw another boat get the same treatment. Ponce is a superb destination. Too bad their marina is operated by personell that don't do anything to help their customers. It's like they'd really rather you weren't there. I've never rated a facility this way and I hope I never have to again.

After you dock a guard or customs person will visit your boat to check documentation and clearance. She will also tell you that if you haven't had a physical inspection you will be fined $1000 for disposing of trash! We've stopped all along coast and never seen this anywhere else. We checked in via the new phone checkin number and no mention of a trash quarantine! This is just another of the unfriendly experiences you get at this marina.
