Additional info:

From north or south on the Sakonnet River, turn towards the entrance to 'The Cove'. Keep to port side of the channel, there is a sand bar on the stbd side. The channel can have small boat traffic entering and leaving the cove as well as dinghies going to the mooring field. There is a small tidal current that flows in and out of the cove. Turn to port into the entrance before the low bridge. There is an old outhouse with the name at the point of the break water. Immediately after entering turn to port and then stbd into the second aisle. The fuel dock is at the end of the aisle. At the end of the aisle you need to make a 90 degree turn to come alongside the fuel dock. Arriving and leaving on a long sailboat can be interesting when the wind is blowing.
The third aisle takes you to the haulout dock.

Worth while calling ahead before entering to make sure that there is room at the dock, otherwise you could be doing some reversing. VHF Ch 13. Staff are very helpful with docking.

Tide & current additional info

Current reverses on the river, pay attention as it is strong when entering past the breakwater.

Reviews for Pirate Cove Marina
Pirate Cove comes through in an emergency, 2016-09-28
Captain: , Cold Spring (10)

Pirate Cove Marina came through for Rhapsody, a 2004 Tartan 4100, and crew, when we really needed them. As anyone who has needed transient yard services knows, there is nothing more welcome than a very capable yard that performs highly competent emergency repairs within a short time frame and at a fair price. Pirate Cove met all of those metrics.
Rhapsody was on a leg of her summer cruise on September 14, 2016, when our PSS shaft seal failed when we were about 5 nm east of Sakonnet Point leading to the ingress of more water than the pumps we had on board could handle. That situation, and a medical emergency resulting from an accident that occurred as we were assessing our situation, led to a call to the USCG, who responded marvelously. We notified Pirate Cove of our situation and location and they told us they would help. Help they most certainly did.
Upon arrival at Pirate Cove we exchanged one guardian angel for another. Immediately, and I mean immediately, after we cleared the breakwater at Pirate Cove we were taken into their travel lift and brought onto the hard, a condition that under the circumstances was very welcome. As soon as we were hauled our bottom was pressure washed. An immediate assessment of the various problems, the simple having led to the more consequential, that resulted in our emergency was made. By now it was the end of the workday and Pirate Cove laid out a plan to get us safely on our way home as quickly as possible. Because we would have to spend the night ashore Pirate Cove provided us with the use of a courtesy car that the yard has for exactly such circumstances. The next day, around noon, my wife and I arrived at Pirate Cove to find Rhapsody already returning from sea trials. All of the problems necessary for our getting underway had been addressed. The bill was itemized, explained and totally reasonable. The management and yard staff of Pirate Cove could not have been more professional, efficient and personable. If you are in the vicinity of Newport, RI, I unreservedly recommend Pirate Cove either for transient repairs or seasonal haul out and servicing.

Very Good. Pretty spot., 2016-07-06
Captain: , New Bedford (130)

Very accomodating place. We called with no notice with a need for a mooring for the night and they took care of us. Use of car, restaurant recommendations were appreciated. Although not immediately apparent, if you walk out of the marina and turn left, there are a couple good restaurants and a little further a diner, liquor store, etc, so there is walkable stuff around. I was using old guides which did not have updated info on fact that railroad bridge on the way out going north has had the center structure and turnstile removed, so that is a clearer passage than it used to be. Coming through the stone bridge passage south of the basin was a wild ride due to I was going through with opposing tide and wind.

Pirate Cove, Wonderful folks !, 2016-06-26
Captain: , Kemah, TX (20)

We stopped here to visit my wife's cousin in Tiverton. The Marina and staff exceeded all of our expectations. From the moment we arrived we were treated like treasured old friends.
Brandon, who runs the marina is generous with his time and extensive knowledge of the area.
He made sure we wanted for nothing. We felt very safe here. Our first evening here we were stopped and questioned by one of the staff. They do not want people hanging around who are not familiar to them. We appreciate that level of commitment to the well being of the people and their boats visiting this home style marina. They also have a very nice courtesy car that they freely loan to transient boaters. Just down the street, Clement's grocery store is highly recommended for your provisioning needs. When in the area, we will be back.
Thanks Pirate Cove !

Berst Marina thiis trip, 2016-05-22
Captain: , Santa Cruz (243)

Its a little tight for bigger boats, but we got in with 42 ft. When we got in the folks there were extremely helpful. The courtesy car was out, so Brandon loaned us his wife's car, and booked us into a very croweded restaurant. When we went to leave Saturday morning, we had a hydraulic seal failure in our pod drive, and they got their mechanic Chris to work on it on his day off. Chris had to tools, knowhow and parts to get us on our way before noon, while the Cummins service people never answered their phone. Their diesel price was the lowest we had seen on our trip up from Florida, and the transient slip price was half what the marinas in Newport wanted. We can't say enought good things about Pirate Cove!

Lost a rubber boot on the heat exchanger while anchored at Third Beach Saturday morning. No parts available till Monday with strong winds expected from the North east. Called Brandon at Pirate Cove and he told us if we could find a way to the Marina he would supply us with a courtesy car and mechanic Monday morning if needed. Boat US to the rescue, courtesy car and a fine mechanic put us back on the water Tuesday morning. Excellent service. Thanks Brandon for all your help!

Very nice place, 2015-09-02
Captain: , Pittsburgh (80)

We left our boat here a couple weeks on a mooring ball while making a trip back home. Very friendly, reasonable. Brandon and his staff were very helpful. The use of the courtesy car made things much easier. I will definitely go back.

Great Stop, 2014-09-08

We found this marina to be a picturesque stop that we did not want to leave. Brandon and his staff were super and gave lots of assistance whenever requested. Many very good restaurants are located nearby and the use of a courtesy car futher enhanced our stay. We would definately come back when ever in the area.

Best value on the Bay, 2014-08-13
Captain: , Solomons, Md (32)

If you're looking for a secure place to keep your boat, under watchful eyes of a competent and conscientious staff, look no further. Full service with reasonable rates.

We kept our 36' Catalina on a mooring for a month at the beginning of this summer while cruising N' Bay. Great service all around, assigned a very hefty mooring with a double bridle that could hold a battleship. As a newcomer to the bay, I asked the owner, Brandon, where I should go if a serious storm should threaten the area. His answer: "bring it here". And I will, if need be.

Special Marina, 2014-07-09
Captain: , Mystic (10)

I have been boating in New England for about 20 yrs. I think I have found my favorate marina! everyone at this marina knows the meaning of excellent customer service. It starts from the owners down. By the way if you think it is out of the way don't. They have a courtesy car avaialable that will alllow you to go into Newport, visit vineyards or hit one of the best resturatnts in RI the "Boat House"...we will be back!

Great stop, 2014-06-28
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

The staff makes this place. They couldn't have been friendlier. The owner, Brandon, treats you like you've been his best customer for the last 10 years. They clearly care about what they do and who they do it for. The mooring field is quiet and serene. I'd give it 5 stars except the bathrooms need a bit of TLC. But I'm happy to ignore that given all of the other strong positives. We'll certainly be back.

Stayed on a Mooring--great stop, 2013-08-11
Captain: , Corpus Christi,Tx (1569)

Agree with previous reviews--nice spot and friendly staff. Nice dinghy dock. Had a courtesy car for us to use to go to the grocery store --a rarity from our perpective for this area. Planned on staying one night, but the area and staff was so nice we stayed for 2. +

Stopped for fuel, 2012-07-21
Captain: , Orcas Island, WA (212)

Nice people, easy to fill the fuel and water, but definitely a one boat dock - call ahead to see if someone is already in there! You can tour the mooring field while waiting for the fuel dock to clear out.

Boat yard and Marina, 2011-11-25
Captain: , Portsmouth RI (275)

We kept our 39' Sailboat there on a mooring for 5 years. It is a tidal river with strong currents. We lived aboard on weekends and finally got used to the banging of the mooring ball against our heads when current and tide opposed. A great place to get experience in picking up a mooring in adverse conditions and boarding the boat from a dinghy from the side instead of from the rear.
An excellent boatyard. Brandon and Dave are great. Prices are probably reasonable for the area.
After experiencing marinas down the ICW from RI to New Bern NC, we got a taste of what a marina can offer.
Pirate Cove has basic marina facilities. Only one toilet per gender which is shared with a shower.
No boaters lounge and book swap. No laundry facilities. Far from groceries.
The fuel dock and pump out is at the end of a narrow fairway. If you are a sailboat 40' and longer with no bow thruster you will need to be proficient with spring lines in 10knot or greater winds. Also, make sure the dock is free before entering.

Staff are excellent. The ships store is well stocked and reasonable on many items.

Moorings are good. We went through Irene there. Brandon kept an eye on boats throughout the storm.

Note that the bridge north of the marina is being rebuilt and check for periods when it may be closed. Also check height limitations.

An excellent coffee house "Coastal Roasters" is accross the river. You can dinghy accross and tie up beneath the coffee house. There is a post for tie up and stairs alongside the building. The coffee house is on the water just south of a dock where there are often one or two black trawlers.

Nearby there is a farmers market on saturday mornings inn the summer

Attention to detail, 2011-10-01
Captain: , Portsmouth RI (673)

Brandon and all the staff at Pirate Cove are very on top of things, extremely helpful and run a very good operation. Moorings are inspected regularly. Prices are very reasonable. Excellent restaurants nearby. Try the Boat House on the other side of the bridge (dinghy over), Stone Bridge restaurant on the east side of the inlet, Evelyn's clam shack (has been feaured on the Food network) has its own dock but v low bridge at entrance makes it a long dingy ride

Fuel Dock & Facilities, 2011-08-04
Captain: , Bristol, RI (366)

Access to fuel dock is down center fairway. Visability of other boats entering/leaving is poor. Maneuvering space is limited. Not recommended for boats over 40 feet LOA.

I use this marina to launch, step mast and haul my sailboat. Excellent staff.

Excellent Reasonably Priced Family Run Operation, 2011-07-09
Captain: , indianapolis (194)

We wanted to spend a month in the Newport, RI area and needed to leave the vessel for a month to travel back home. We received a severe case of sticker shock around Newport and ended up moving the boat to a mooring ball at Pirates Cove. (we paid $600 a month for a remote ball in June of 2011) The friendly owners and staff, the very adequate ship store, the haulout and dock facilities all recommend this as a place to have work done, rest, and explore. There is an excellent restaurant for dinners (15 Point Road Restaurant) a short 100 yard walk or so to the south and Portsmouth is a mile or so further. It is a great place to store a boat on a ball and many seem to do so. No bridges to worry about. Beware fairly tight access to the fuel docks for larger vessels, No laundry facilites which was a disappointment. 30 minutes from the airport in Providence. Family run, third generation operation with a first rate mechanical team. I would recommend it as a good rest point or storage facility.

Pirate Cove Marina - Friendly staff, safe in a storm, nice location, 2010-07-21
Captain: , Portsmouth, RI (10)

Pirate Cove Marina is a family business that appreciates it's customers. The staff is friendly and helpful and can provide or direct you to most any services you'll need. The marina has all single-bay slips so you'll have a full length finger pier on both sides of your boat when docked. Moorings are available too. The docks are surrounded by land on two sides and a breakwater on the opposite sides so there is never a ripple in the slips... it's a great place to be in a blow!
There are several restaurants within walking distance; the best being named 15 Point Rd. A liquor store is nearby and the ships store at the marina has a good supply of essentials. The cove next to the marina is a great place for exploring with your dinghy. If you have a raised bridge there good boat watching over the breakwater too.
