Reviews for Pilot House Marina
Great Resturant, 2016-11-24
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (995)

Update 11/1/16
Docks are in good shape but it is pricy for the type of marina it is. It is actually extremely basic with no included amenities. They have new washers and dryings which are outside and $2.00 per load. If you are on the docks west of the restaurant, it is quite a hike to get to the dock office and washer/dryers and showers. You really need to walk through the restaurant or walk on the dirt around it to get to the office. We were on a facedock due to our 25' width and were helped when we came in. If it were not for the restaurant and Fish Store, we would probably not stay there again for that price. At a more resonable price, i would be back often.

pdate 7/18/13 As a Captain, I get to travel with different people on different yachts and this was the case. Left Key West heading to Palm Beach County and after staying at Dinner Key marina in Miami on the trip south, I knew I needed a different destination. Since my last visit, this has all been updated and will now be on my permanent list of places to go. Food was great, location ok only because there is nothing right there to do. Key Largo Fisheries is right there where fishermen bring their fresh catches in each day, and today it was a ton of Lobster. Bought fresh Tuna steaks. Staff was fantastic. Floating docks made life easy for my clients who needed to walk off the swim platform. A little bit of a hike to the bathrooms but they were clean.
Scary place to pull into because the entrance looks shallow. Great dockmaster. Needed help swapping props after slight grounding at Angelfish creek exit and found some people to get the job done. Great food and bar. Fuel dock easily accessible. Only bar i've seen with glass floors for looking at the fish.

Capt. Don, Pineapple Princess LLC, Ft. Pierce, 2016-06-09
Captain: , Fort Pierce, Florida (10)

Stayed here for a month on way to Key West. Well protected when weather bad. Prices for slips have skyrockected under new management. Paid $400 more/month than my last stay here 3 years ago. Jimmy and other dockmasters very cordial, restrooms/showers ok, Pilot House restaurant food fair to good. Within walking/bicycle distance of pharmacies (CVS & Walgreens), good restaurants, dive center, etc. Publix and KMart about 3-4 miles north on US1 (15 min bike ride). Be careful to tell dockmaster if you are going out to the reefs to dive or snorkel because boats will sneek into your slip. Key Largo Fisheries in same basin on southwest corner has good small restaurant and the best prices for fresh fish in the Keys.
Dog friendly!
It's too bad the marinas in the Keys are gouging the public, but slips are few and in high demand so they get what they are asking.

Fuel Dock at Pilothouse , 2016-05-03
Captain: , New Orleans (10)

Having stopped on the way to and from Nassau for fuel and a meal at Pilothouse Marina/Restaurant for the past dozen years, we have always found the place friendly and accommodating. No more. In the past with after hour arrival we were encouraged to overnight at the fuel dock in anticipation of getting fuel in the morning. This time we took 650 gallons of fuel and were awarded a 228 dollar overnight charge. Guess they're not as accommodating as they used to be. Restaurant still good.

New Managenent, 2016-05-01
Captain: , New Orleans (30)

Pilot House used to be helpful and friendly but apparently now under new management. We got in at midnight and tied up at the fuel dock to get diesel at 7am when they opened. Got the fuel and a $4+ per foot charge to use their pilings over overnight. Previously they were happy to sell us 500gals of diesel and comp the overnight. There are other fuel docks in the next canal, all at cheaper prices.

Well protected, over priced, 2016-03-17
Captain: , Poughkeepsie, NY (5686)

This would be an excellent marina for $2/ft but at $3.75/ft, it's just too much. It is certainly well protected but we just used it as a tie up for the night. Apparently the marina manager is try to see how high he can go in price. If you intend using this marina I would advise calling ahead to discover where at on the sliding upward scale he's currently at.

I saw 5.2 ft at MLW as the lowest spot coming in, the PDF directions were excellent.

Well Protected Marina, 2016-01-05
Captain: , Hull, MA (700)

Marina is located in Largo Lake at the end of a canal off the ICW.
The narina is welll protected with excellent concrete flosting docks. There is a Northeaster blowing 10 to 20 and we don't feel it at all. The dockmaster Jimmy and his crew are very helpful. We are staying a few extra nights due to wearher. The marina has fuel, restaurant/bar, laundry, clean rest rooms and a lounge with a wide screen HDTV. Easy walking distance to downtown area, Walgreens, CVS, Starbucks, Liquor store, restaurants, etc. If you get a chance go to Snooks Restaurant--excellent.
The marina also offers a discount to active captain members--3 nights for the price of 2.

Narrow canal, very well protected, walk to better restaurants, 2015-10-14
Captain: , Annapolis (104)

Docked 39 foot cat overnight. Canal is narrow, but we did not encounter opposing traffic. On site restaurant/sports bar, but a 5 minute walk to a CVS and several better restaurants. Food was expensive and portions small. There are commercial fishing vessels that go out early, so expect noise.

protected working marina with great wifi and restaurants, 2015-04-02
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale, FL (100)

Great marina with super friendly staff. Two decent and pet friendly restaurants within walking distance (one on site). Had no issues bringing our 23' beam power cat through the channel. Just be sure to hug the mangroves 1/2 way down to avoid the rock and give others a courtesy hail if you are entering canal with a large beam. Great directions for entering canal on marinas website. Only downside to marina is that it is a true working marina / harbour with fuel, fish, and trash scents lingering in the air on occasion. Saw a ray and several manatees in the marina - very cool! Need to cab in to town for groceries.

Good people, 2015-03-18
Captain: , Marathon, FL (1213)

We only stayed at the marina for a few hours, but I can say that the crew there was absolutely wonderful as we were dealing with a beloved dog in her final hours on earth. They let us tie up to the fuel dock and drove us to pick up the rental car so we could take her to the vet. We are so grateful for their kindness. And the marina looks very nice, but be very careful while in the canal. High tide highly recommended for anything over 3' draft.

Almost Too Narrow for a Catamaran..........., 2015-03-16
Captain: , Tarpon Springs, FL (30)

Great facilities & restaurant, but the canal leading in/out is almost too narrow for a cruising catamaran. Pray that you don't meet another vessel midway through.

Glad we tried it ..., 2015-01-13
Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (450)

Entrance navigation instructions on their website are spot-on. Was glad we didn't have a bigger boat navigating the canal going in. Spent one afternoon and overnight, ate in the restaurant, and took on fuel; good showers and faciliities, nice folks on staff and the dock and a short taxi ride to West Marine. Enzo was a big help with everything.

A great place in the Keys!, 2014-04-24
Captain: , Tampa, FL (60)

We spent three nights here. A little tricky finding landmarks to enter canal. The facilities are first rate. BBQ grills and tables. There is a variety of food providers.m the marina staff put this stop above the crowd.

Friendly place, no docking discounts, 2014-04-24
Captain: , Acworth, GA (75)

Nice little place. A bit scary getting in as it's very narrow and has some shallow spots. The staff are friendly. At $3.25 per foot it's a bit pricey to stay on the gas docks. They had no Boat US discount and had not heard of a deal for Active Captain. Restaurant is good with interesting locals. Good facilities and easy access to other facilities by bike

Great Food, 2014-03-30
Captain: , The Breakers, Kentucky Lake (60)

Narrow channel coming in but love this place. We had pulled in and had dinner with a slip next to resturant. Anything appitizer is good. I ordered a meal from appitizers and was very pleased.

Loved this place, 2014-03-12
Captain: , Doylestown, Pa. 18902 (414)

Our last stay was for a week we called in advance and were told they would find a spot for us. We arrived and ended up on the fuel dock. Diesels idling in the am was a smell I could have done without. The marina is almost always full. Does not seem like much room for trancient dockage anymore. It's gotten too popular. Expansion needed. They have both diesel and gas fair pricing if you are gassing up free ice or free ice during your stay. Nice showers and bathrooms and laundry facilities. They also have a nice reading and tv room with a computer. Nice deep canal to a real hurricane hole. Two restaurants with in easy walking distance. The people here go out of their way help you into your slip and they are as pleasant as can be. The Pilot House restaurant has good food. No ramp but they can launch your boat via forklift. Only about five miles to good snorkeling on the reef. Pennecamp state park is only a couple miles away.
D.D.

Success can be your demise, 2014-03-04
Captain: , Charlestown (946)

I really like this place, but they failed me this time. I reserved two slips a week in advance and when I got there they tried to put us on the fuel dock and a slip by the restaurant, which would have meant that we would be practically sitting on the deck at someone's table. Either letting us know in advance of the situation or just telling us they were full would have been a better choice on management's part. The dockhands there really tried to get us sqeezed in and cudos to them, but zero stars for customer service on management's side, four if we had gotten a slip. Pennekamp wasn't a bad alternitive.

good work friendly place, 2014-02-08

Friendly place, 2013-11-14
Captain: , Miami (100)

This is a friendly place and a walking distance to restaurants and stores. Good facilities with electric, water, wifi, pump out and fuel (gas and diesel). The staff is very helpful but can be difficult to find them at times. Sometimes bathrooms have a mildew smell but they are clean. Music from the restaurant especially when a live band is playing can be loud. Overall a good marine reasonably priced.

Exceptional Hospitality in Key Largo, 2013-07-13
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, Florida (20)

My family and I cruised from Hillsboro Florida to Key West stopping off at The Pilot House on the way to and from our destination. The dockmaster was incredibly friendly and helpful. While it is a small marina and the slips are in the midst of the restaurant we found the locals to be inviting and terrific company. The marina offers water, electric, cable, fuel (gas and diesel), pump out, bait, laundry and awesome food (breakfast, lunch and dinner). We had a 50 amp cable break and the dockhand took it for a couple of hours and returned it to us repaired and in great working condition. Nightlife at the bar is great. Middle aged crowd with a few dogs parked at the bottom of the bar stools. I've been back by land to visit the Marine Reef Preservation Foundation located on the dock there and would definately recommend it for overnight stays while making passage to Key West and beyond.

Awesome Marina Awesome People, 2013-06-26
Captain: , Florida (10)

We were new in the boating world, but this place felt like home. All the employees went out of their way to help us get adjusted and all the other boaters did as well. When we are in the area or if we decide to stop cruising, we will come back "home". couldn't ask for a better place!

great snug harbor with character, 2013-05-31
Captain: , houston, tx (393)

Spent a week here waiting for more favorable weather. Upon arrival, Mat (the dockmaster) and Mark (assistant ) provided solid information on how to handle the tricky entry and grabbed docklines. They offered a wealth of local information on eateries and I highly agree with their recommendations after trying several. This is a friendly place. I do not know who the one person met that wrote a negative review, but everyone we met here was ultra personable and went out of their way to be friendly and helpful.
Do follow the advice on the website on the channel entry. The floating docks were three pint tie-ups with a nice width. A good mix of transient and regulars in the marina. Nice bar and eatery on site and several within walking distance. The American Legion across the street welcomes all and the chef there, Tod, is a character and a great cook.
Like Mikey said, "try it-you'll like it!".
Also, good laundry and bathroom facilities (clean and several locations for bathrooms). The laundry is cheaper and better than most.

Great staff!, 2013-04-25
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (50)

We arrived at the markers outside the channel 2 hours before low tide...but with a full moon, the water was very skinny. I called the marina for some guidance on getting in and they got in their boat and met us in the canal and led us thru the good water all the way back to the marina. Now that is customer service!

Not again!, 2013-03-07
Captain: , Bluffton, South Carolina (327)

Spent 2 nights there last week. Yes, it is tricky to get into, but if you are careful and broadcast our Securite at Crash Corner you should be OK. Once in, we felt the marina staff to be disinterested in transient customers. Appears to be a local boater hangout, with staff more engaged in moving boats in and out of their storage facility than catering at a professional level to one-timers. Tiki bar is appropriate to the Keys environment, dated and loud into the wee hours. Diesel at $4.76. Dockage at $3/ft. No discounts. Very disappointing for an Active Captain "first choice"! We will not return.

Great marina, 2013-03-04
Captain: , Richardson, TX (552)

We disagree with that last review, they must have come here on an off day. This is our second year here and we have nothing negative to say about it. The staff is friendly, bathrooms are cleaned regularly and the docks are in great shape. One of the doors on the old rest rooms didn't close properly and when we complained, it was fixed immediately. (They plan to tear this building down so weren't going to make repairs.) The food is good at the Tiki bar, live music every night until 10 so if that bothers you at all you might not like being here. We enjoy it. The boater's lounge is the nicest we've seen as are the new bathrooms on that side of the marina. The entrance to the channel to get in is very shallow at low tide and the channel itself is narrow. Definitely read the instructions on the web site about the best way to get in or check with the marina before coming in. We draw 4 ft and have never had a problem. The only negative to this marina is that it is 2 1/2 miles from the grocery store. The dollar store is close and has a lot of food items and if you have bikes, several trips with knap sacks or baskets will work! There's a good selection of restaurants within walking distance, a Walgreens and CVS.

Did not feal at all welcome, 2013-03-01
Captain: , Racine (121)

We did not stay here but drove over by car to see why it had such good reviews.

The place seemed deserted (lots of boats but no people). When we found the dock-master and asked about a slip he seemed to have little time for us.

There was fuel floating in the water near the fuel dock. This added to a very bad impression of the place.

It was hard for us to reconcile the reviews for this place with our initial impressions. We will never know, as we will never stay here.

Off the beaten path this marina is a quaint gem in Key Largo. The staff are friendly and helpful. I have been keeping my boat there in dry dock for the last month and am very happy with the move. The redstaurant and glass bottom bar offer freash and reasonably priced Florribean food with a lively local atmosphere and fun live entertainment.

Have be coming here since the 80's when the square groupers were arriving and the police had a blockade at Homestead. The last time I was here was the spring of 2011. The Pilot House is a Florida Keys icon; not to be missed.

At 3.00 per foot I thought it was a little spendy. Marina was clean with new floating docks. Nice restaurant in the Marina. Will be back on journey North.

Friendly Marina with a Great Bar, 2012-09-10
Captain: , Deerfield Beach, FL (60)

The dockmaster and staff were very helpful. I lost my starboard engine (air in the fuel line) coming in & they were very quick to help. We loved the bar and had "balcony seats" from our flybridge to watch the live band. As others have noted, it's nice and deep all the way back to the marina. Stay in the center of the canal except near the mangroves, (about 1/2 way in) then hug the port side on entry.

Marina & Restaurant June 29, 2012, 2012-07-04

Entry missing 1 green marker. Channel entry favor slightly to the north, mid channel hug the mangroves & as you enter the marina area you want to be mid channel. Great Marina staff & new concrete floating docks. Restaurant only average food & high priced.

Helped us get tied up and checked in. Floating docks in good shape. Bathrooms were very nice. Clean and well maintained. Quite hot back in the lake, you will need air conditioning. Go see the African Queen docked a short walk away. Great resturant and bar, fun group with live music.

Easy channel, well protected back there. There is a great tiki bar with glass bottom panels that light up at night. As others have said not much to the marina, no pool, etc. but the dockhands were great. Fuel and pumpout easily accesable; shares basin w/ commerical fishing boats and charter fleet. Convenient to most area services

great protection from wind and waves, awsome Glass bottom tiki bar and resturant. Best fuel prices in the keys. Great stop off for loopers, within walking distance to shoping and other diving and snorkeling shops, also a dive boat in the marina. The staff are very friendly and helpful. marina is on the Ocean side and the water is crystal clear. They are in the process of building a new bath house and boaters lounge, and are putting in a new set of floating docks. Don the marina manager gives loopers special rates and reductions on fuel prices

One of the better Marinas in Key Largo. Dockmaster very helpful/knowledgeable. Marina is usually close to maximum occupancy, transient dockage, new renovations. Cheapest fuel prices in the Keys!

Great Hurricane Hole, 2011-01-26
Captain: , Hernando Beach, Fl (300)

Very narrow residential canal leading to the Marina, but once you arrive, there's plenty of room to move. The docks are in need of repair, but the location is close to numerous restaurants and a short walk to the main shopping district. We heard it was bought by Cay Club which has since gone bankrupt. Not sure who owns it now.

It was great in 2005..., 2010-08-27
Captain: , NYC, USA (80)

I had a 32 foot sailboat there for about a month and it only cost me about $300 as I recall. Excellent marina staff, and the Tiki Bar was great ... lots of friendly locals every night and the beer and food prices were OK. Nice clean head and shower, but no laundry as I recall. Good source of cheap block ice nearby at a fishery. Easy, no hassle access for outside repair folks. With a car or bicycle, good access to some excellent restaurants, etc. on US 1 a mile or two away.

Local knowledge of the access canal is helpful if you can get it due to some very shallow spots that you should avoid.
