Reviews for Piccozzi's Dering Harbor Marina
July 10 & 11, 2017 on a Mooring, 2017-07-13
Captain: , Milford Ct (105)

Friendly service.

Pickup sticks on white mooring balls with a blue stripe. Easy to identify when you follow the channel to the gas dock and turn right (north).

Facilities are in a non-air conditioned 12 x 12 or so white building. 1 room a men's shower, 1 room a men's toilet & sink. 1 room a women's shower, 1 room a women's toilet & sink.

If you need an electrical outlet it is on the side of the light fixture above the sink.

There is a restaurant The Dory (check nightly specials in advance) within a block into town. Marie Eiffel Market ( offers scrumptious selections of fresh baked goods, organic produce, cheeses, fresh fish, sandwiches, salads & more.

The Shelter Island Yacht club will announce club opening & sunset with their cannon.

There is a bike rental across the street at the Mobil.

Lovely Setting, 2016-07-13

We stayed for 2 nights over the 4th of July weekend. Mooring filed is tight, but acceptable. Showers are old, but also acceptable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great for a stopover.

Barely adequate to tie up for the night, 2015-09-01
Captain: , New York (60)

First of all, this is not a marina. It is - maybe - a pier you can tie up to. They are stationary docks with pilings. Some of the "slips" have ladders (which, may or may not, be usable) to allow you to get up to the very high dock from your transom. Although 30A is included in the price of the slip, when we got there the only pedistal required a series of splitters (totally unsafe) to get us hooked up. Some of the water spigots worked, some didnt. Zero other ameneties. Nice island. Pretty bare bones dock. Oh, and don't forget the 3am air horn that seems to go off every morning for not discernable reason.

Water rationing still in effect, 2015-08-02
Captain: , Bristol, Rhode Island (2761)

Rating below describes marina's policy that, even if you purchase fuel at Piccozzi's fuel dock, they refuse to give you water unless you also rent one of their moorings.
I can report that, a year later, the policy still holds. One of our group of cruising sailboats purchased diesel, but was not allowed to take on water.

Water fill refused and rude dock service, 2014-08-06
Captain: , US East Coast (1116)

For the first time in my cruising life we were refused to fill water after geting fuel, just because we didn't use their transient slips. We were totally empty on water and offered to pay for it. They just ignored us after my wife said that we have young kids on board and we really needed water.

Next time I'll go out of my way for fuel, ut will never stop by this dump again.

Great Marina, 2014-07-16
Captain: , Shelter Island (45)

I've been staying at Piccozzi's Dering Harbor Marina for the past 40 years and have found the hot showers, cold ice and warm help wonderful. The marina is probably located in one of the most beautiful harbors around. I've found in my many years of boating if the dock crew is surly the boat captain must have done something to tee them off in the first place. Capt Joe Anderson sailing vessel "M&M"

poor service , 2014-01-10
Captain: , Oysterbay (10)

After 3 nights on a mooring they charged me double for a pump out of a 6 gallon holding tank then added insult to injury by denying us water until I blew a gasket and demanded that the surly unhelpful dock hand call their office. Although seemingly nice the office staff doesn't seem to know what they are doing. They quoted me and I paid one price then when I decided to stay one more night they deceived that they had undercharged me for the first 2 nights made me pay the difference then added the price of the next night when I pointed out to them I had been charged double for pump out they just shrugged poor customer service and since they are a summer tourist industry they need to really shape up

No DRINKING Water, 2013-10-08
Captain: , Manhasset Bay (10)

After taking on fuel we denied water. We had been out for 10 days at the time and had less than 1/3 of our capacity. We were told since we did not use their mooring we could not fill our tanks. We had called the night before for one of their moorings they had none available. We have been stopping here annually for the past 20 years. NEVER AGAIN.

Quite acceptable, 2012-06-25
Captain: , Narragansett Bay, RI (446)

We head down to Shelter Island without reservations or a specific plan. Decided to call underway to find a mooring to holdup, as severe thunderstorms were predicted overnight. Women on the phone was very nice and took a credit card number to hold. Then we read the reviews below and got nervous. No reason to be. We went in to see the dockmaster the next morning, who was also helpful.

They have showers and restrooms ashore, but little else. Fuel, water and pump out are all available at the fixed dock with the white painted tires.

The transient moorings begins immediately next to the docks on the east side of the channel.

Overpriced shopping is available within a short walk. Hardware store, pharmacy, etc all easy walk away.

Can't Get Water Even After Buying Diesel, 2011-09-09
Captain: , Bridgeport, CT (559)

I had this experience with a surly dock hand and discovered recently it was not an isolated incident when another sailor in our club related the same experience. Want water, go to Shelter Island Yacht Club is the message. Did take a mooring, the lady handling the reservation was very helpful; however, the moorings are so close together that my stern almost was on top of the one next to us. They do not have tender service; you have to use your dinghy. Next time will be Shelter Island Yacht Club for us.

Nice and friendly marina, 2011-07-26
Captain: , Mamaroneck, NY (50)

I recently spent at night a Piccozzi's while visiting Shelter Island. The marina staff was incredibly helpful and competent. The marina is right near the tiny town of Deering Harbor so you can walk to a bunch of stores.

Convenient to town, crowded mooring field, shabby facilities, 2011-01-29
Captain: , Stratford, CT (250)

The only thing going for this marina is it's closeness to the town of Dering Harbor and its fueling facilities. We found the staff to be surly and not at all helpful. My wife says she would not return here ever again. I understand you could rent a bicycle from them, but have not done so. The mooring field and fuel dock are very crowded, and we found it quite hard to manuever our 35' sailboat around this jammed marina. Stay at the SI Yacht Club if you can.

Piccozzi's Dering Harbor, 2007-07-20
Captain: , City Island, NY (120)

Small, no frills. I picked up a transient mooring here one evening. The setting is absolutely lovely, a great place to spend a day on the way out to Block or back. Toilet and showers.

Fuel Up Mobil, 2007-04-15
Captain: , New York (88)

Picozzi is a small marina with slilps for a handful of boats usually only a few transients and have some moorings as well. They do no repairs and have no chandlery, but carry some filters and Mobil products and propane. Fuel and water are at a windward dock which is quite protected and accesible by vessels with 10' drafts.
