Reviews for Pennekamp State Park Largo Sound - Moorings
Transient Dock, 2015-03-30
Captain: , YORKTOWN, VA (383)

There are 2 or 3 transient slips at the Park Headquarters not shown on the chart. I brought my 48 ft Krogen in there several times over the past five years. This is a great place to tie up if you want to use the park's outstanding facilities. Power, water ans showers available and a hidden gem.

Great respite from storms!, 2015-02-03
Captain: , Manteo North Carolina (151)

The moorings here are reasonably priced, not too much fetch provides a comfortable night even in 25+ knots wind, though you might have a wet dingy ride to the park. The narrow cut through to the marina from the mooring area is a not motor zone. Best to pull your dingy into the kayak beach on the left and walk across the bridge (200 yards).

With only a 1 ft tidal range, boats drafting up to 5.5 ft can easily get to the mooring field. Stay in the channel, pass the last set of markers and continue straight until the 2 vertical white mooring field markers (they look like no wake zone markers) line up to port. Turn gradually, you should be seeing 6-6.5 ft. Once you reach the first marker, you can turn into the mooring field. Depths are a pretty consistant 6 ft+ depth and soft bottom.

very good moorings, 2015-01-28
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1804)

Moorings Cost $21/night. Pay at State Park Marina about a mile dingy ride from Mooring field. Moorings in good shape. Shallow area as other say 4 ft. Dingy dock at State Park , good dock and secure. Ride your bike or walk to stores etc about 2 miles away. Concession at State Park Marina, offering food and snacks, Good snorkeling and diving in Park from your boat or the dive operators in marina. Equipment rental available. No fuel for public in Marina. Marina has slips with water and power for smaller boats maybe a 10 ft beam,32 ft length, check with Marina.

Shallow but nice, 2014-07-13
Captain: , Cocoa FL (670)

Follow the advice under "navigation" not turn toward the mooring field until well past markers 22/23. We came in just after high tide and saw about 4.5-5 feet. Showers are modern, clean and nice, but because they are located in the campground area of the park it is a long walk. Closest gas for dinghy is through Adams cut to the bay side, then up past Marriott to Marina Club. Dinner at Sundowners nearby was pricy but very good. Publix for groceries is about 1.5 miles. I was able to get decent WiFi with a booster. Scott at the rental concession is a great help and knows the area very well.

Only 4' in the dredged channel, 2013-03-07
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (552)

We need 5' and we called to make a reservation but the Harbor Master (?) said we would not make it in.

Nice protected Mooring, 2013-02-21
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

It's a nice well protectet Mooring field, but watch your depth sounder! We also got WiFi with our 7 mile system!

Beautiful but Shallow, 2013-01-28
Captain: , Key Largo (254)

The area is very nice, shielded from the elements, and the moorings are away from boating traffic. Overall, not too bad. As long as you watch your depth you should be fine.

Watch the depth, 2012-08-29
Captain: , Atlanta, GA (291)

Water can getting pretty skiny down here, but we made it in with 5.5ft draft with nothing more than a little brush to knock off some algae.

Secure Moorings, 2012-04-30
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4307)

A harbor with wind protection and secure moorings. Small boats that use the Key Largo cut pass by the moorings on their way to the Atlantic, but their wakes are not bad. In comparison to Keys Marina prices, a secure mooring, with shoreside facilities and close access to retail and provisions is a good deal.

Pristine water, 2012-02-29
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

There is a small (basic) 305-453-1313 marina on the east side of the Largo sound called Tarpon Flats Inn and Marina, skinny entrance at low tide ( about 4 feet ) showers ,laundry, no food at the inn but restaurants 1 mile away on Rt 1, Publix about 2 miles. The water in the sound was really clear on my visit. Rates are $13 foot on monthly base. The Pennekamp state park has kayak rental and diving boat to the gorgeous reef.

Shallow; Pretty, 2012-02-20
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (323)

Enter the mooring field on a high tide; very shallow. Lovely place to moor. Good dinghy ride to park with walking trails, swimming beach (beach itself is not lovely, but water is nice), aquarium, scuba, snorkel, and glass-bottom boat trips.

Deeper than charted, 2011-11-04
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (533)

I've navigated to the mooring balls in my 4'6" draft sailboat and never saw less than 5.5 feet. It's a long dingy ride into the marina landing and it's a wet one when the north wind is blowing.

Two nights on the moorings, 2010-06-30
Captain: , Nabbs Creek (188)

We took a 42 foot cat with 4'2" draft into the sound. The first trip was a bit much but after a few trips it was easy. The marina was nice and there is an ice cream shop close by.

Port in a storm, 2010-02-27
Captain: , Belfast Maine (111)

Facilities are a little run down - we took a 50 foot slip to avoid 29 mph winds because the run from the moorings to the dinghy dock was so long. The 30 amp electric had reversed polarity, no provision for getting off the boat except by dinghy, and the dinghy tie up is at a dock that is 4 feet above the dinghy. One vertical ladder available which is tough for crotchety knees. Quite a walk to the showers and laundry. Lots to do, lots to see, great for families.

Great quiet and scenic location, 2009-07-14
Captain: , Boynton Beach, FL (94)

Spent 2 nights on the ball. Made pleasurable day trips to snorkel White Banks Dry Rocks Reef and swim at Jacobs Aquatic Center's Water Park. Great for everyone, including families.

Nice place to visit, 2009-05-28

Mooring Balls, 2008-07-23
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Use Adams cut (4 ft draft, 14 air height) for easy access to and from bayside. Hideout Resturant located on sound.
5 ft. plus at mooring.

Great Overnight Location, 2007-03-14
Captain: , Huntington, NY (2311)

Their is an impressive scenic ride to reach the sound, not very deep. We took a 39 foot Catamaran with a 4 1/2 foot draft and did well. As you can imagine, most of the sound is well protected from all three, wind, swells, and development, the later because it's part of a state park. From here to Miami is a long trip, but doable in a single day.
