Reviews for Payne's New Harbor Dock
Very enjoyable stay, 2017-08-06
Captain: , Providence (443)

At Paynes they pack the boats in pretty tightly, but they have a great crew and they're very good at both packing you in, and getting you out.

A really Nice Place, 2017-06-27
Captain: , Borden Light, Fall River MA (86)

Paynes is the last marina in Great Salt Pond. It is nice, but not as nice as Champlains. Champlains has some floating docks and also offers a few more amenities so it seems more like a resort. For the difference of $0.50/Ft we prefer Champlain's.

Brewers rendouvous , 2017-06-19
Captain: , Branford ,CT (220)

Great spot to hold a rendouvous ! Dock staff was excellent at fitting everybody in with little room to spare! Well done Sands!!! Just a little dicey getting of the stern of the boat at low tide with no ladders!

Late Season visit to Block, 2016-10-15
Captain: , Amagansett (30)

With Payne's the only marina still open to accommodate transients at this time of year and with only a few boats in residence, we had a full dock to ourselves, with side-to tie up. The owner was there to greet us when we arrived late in the day and newly renovated bathrooms and showers were better than expected - a perfect overnight with a beautiful sunset on a nearly deserted Block Island - excellent stop on an end of season cruise. This was my first time at Payne's, having docked at Champlin's and Block Island Boat Basin previously. Location and service with excellent and, although I know that Payne's packs them in during the height of the season, and that my experience there was quite different, I will be back.

I love Payne's, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Newport (10)

There is definitely something in the water at Payne's, because I have never seen a more gregarious group of boaters at a marina ever. Cliff, Sands, and the crew have created a very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere there.

Our number 1 choice at Block, 2016-09-05
Captain: , Huntington (465)

We go to Block almost every year and always stay Paynes. Cliff runs a great marina and we like his relaxed attitude when it comes to reservations. It is a little walk into town but Paynes is walkable and when you eat on the island you need some exercise. They are very helpful when docking or disembarking.

We were there for only one night this past July. It was our stopover point on a trip to Nantucket. It would have been nice to stay a few extra days. Fun atmosphere at the expanded docks. Chris and team were as always a great help with the lines.

We spent three days this past July at Payne's. This year we took our tender to the other side of New Harbor, beached it and then crossed the road to spend the day at the beach. The water was crystal clear with the waves gently lapping on shore. A great day. We also went to the channel at the entry to the harbor. This year we discovered that you could order food in advance and pick it up at the dock. We have been coming almost every year for 15 years and still find something new and Payne's almost feels like home.

Block Island Vacation, 2016-08-18
Captain: , Rye, NY (10)

Great service and staff at Payne's. Laid back group that gets the job done.

really nice people/rockin place, 2016-08-08
Captain: , east hampton (10)

This was my second visit to Payne's. I find the folks there very competent and welcoming. However, I would not make the mistake again of showing up there just before noon on a summer Sunday. I think they were overwhelmed. That said, once we got help, it was super nice, calm, and accomodating.

best option on block island, 2016-08-08
Captain: , Westport (10)

Payne's is the best option on Block Island. Great team and faciliities, relaxed and easy going atmosphere at Shoals bar and cafe.

Outstanding, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Milford CT (10)

We had a great time at Paynes, fun and friendly people, the dock hands are by far the best in Block Island.

Payne's Dock, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (10)

We love Payne's. Have been coming for 10 years or so and I am still amazed at how they shuffle boats around when you tell them you are ready to depart. Great family and great crew.

Great as always, 2016-07-31
Captain: , Mystic, CT (10)

The nicest thing about Payne's is the Owners and staffs wilingness to make sure all goes well when you are there. From their periodic Dock walks adjusting lines that may have shifted to allowing the piling jumpers. They have improved the bathrooms and facilities over the past few years and the Paynes dock is our favorite place to dock on Block. Always a down to earth respectful guest list around us.

Great time, 2016-07-31
Captain: , Warwick, RI (10)

Stayed at Paynes for 2 nights. Great atmosphere and very convenient. All of my guests were pleased. Will return again soon.

we will be asking to return for more of the same, 2016-07-27

great location and support

Vibrant and Friendly, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Barrington, RI (31)

There is nothing quite like Block Island and its amazing Great Salt Pond. Payne's Dock sits at one corner of the pond, the centre of a bustling, active and friendly hubbub of boaters, staff and folks looking to have a fun time. Had a decent breakfast there, fresh shellfish and outdoor drinks. Definitely recommended!

Great weekend , 2016-07-27

October 16,2015

We always dockat Payne's. H eis the only one open at this timeof the year- after Columbus Day. It was very windy but we got in with his direction. Stayed an extra day because of weather. Block Island is nice in the fall-not too busy. Docks are old but solid. Do not use facilities.

October 16, 2014

Arrived in AM after an overnight run from Portland Me. Clhris was there to meet us . Lot of wind - 27 knots - pushing us off the dock. Was interesting but we got in and were settled by 9:30 AM. Had breakfast and then the rain came so we stayed on board all day. Next day met a couple on a sailboat from Wiscasset Me - they were waiting for the right wind to move to their nexxt stop. We left around Noon with sunny skies. Good spot to stop.

May 13, 2014

Arrived in AM after an overnight run from Atlantic City. Easy docking with wind helping for once. Chris is always friendly and gladto see us. He is always busy at this time of year getting ready for the season. We were his first boat this year. Block Island is a lovely placeto walk. We always stop at The Depot to buy a few things - mostly bread and fruit.

October 16, 2013 Chris Payne is always fun to meet up with. This year he told us he has AIS on his IPAD so he can watch out for you ahead of your arrival. He still does not use VHF so call his cell. His new dock is complete and beautiful - it has increased his docking capacity by about 30%. Nice walk into town and the grocery. Easy in and out - no wind this time.

May 17, 2013 - Always a friendy placeto stop. Easy docking with two people handling lines and no wind to speak of. Chris is adding a new dock at the end of his facility. Pile driver working on installing pilings. Chris put us as far away from it as he could - noise was barely noticeable. Sustained some damage from Sandy storm surge but repairs nearly complete.

October 2012
As always Chris is very friendly and very knowledgeable about his docks and your boat. We docked in very windy weather with a good current running. He had us tuck in alongside the inside of a U shaped dock so our bow would be into the wind. THey know how to handle boats. Block Island is always a fun walk into the main town.

May 2012 -
Fixed docks make this interesting. Fortunately the tide is only a few feet and manageable. We are always there off season so rates are reasonable. Walk into the main town about 1.5 miles away. Small grocery about 0.5 mile walk away. Got excellent produce and bread there.

There's no place like this place, 2015-09-08
Captain: , Lewes, DE (178)

Payne's is a unique and somewhat unnerving marina. If you've never docked here before get ready for new and unusual! They use the wells that the docks create like a huge game of Tetris. Some boats horizontal some vertical. They had me back in my 41 foot sailboat between two larger power boats and make a right turn! I never would have thought it possible. All the dock neighbors were wonderful and it is common practice to take the least strenuous path to the dock, walking across any boat you need to. Other boat owners encouraged us to take an easy path via their boat. It was a strange and wonderful place. A walk up the main dock brings you to a bar and a restaurant and a souvenir shop. The accommodations are average to below average and the showers are only open from 7 to 6. But it's fun and that is why we boat, fun! Of course beyond the dock is Block Island which we love. Tourism is their main commodity and they embrace it which makes the island an awesome place to visit. I enjoyed Paynes. It isn't for the feint of heart but it was fun. They also have fuel.

Will never stay here again..., 2015-07-31
Captain: , Pittsburgh (80)

First the employees at the marina all have an attitude. Second everything is so crowded you can't move and getting in and out of your slip is difficult. The showers close at 7 and were ice cold both near closing and right after opening...

If you like to party and stay up late making a bunch of noise, this may be your place..

Not a nice experience...

Threadbare, but friendly, 2015-07-01
Captain: , Baltimore (180)

The facilities show their age. Nothing fancy, but adequate. Nice folks to deal with. Very good location. Nearby restaurants and bike and moped rentals, a hike, but not too far to walk to Old Harbor.

One Big Labor day Party, 2014-11-22
Captain: , Milford, Ct (70)

Stayed here with another couple on Labor Day and it was one Long Party one of the best times I ever had, Like the other reviews stated they do stuff the boats in there so dont think you are going to have any kind of privacy. Cant wait to go back next year!

Fun at Payne's, 2014-10-25
Captain: , Greenwich Bay, RI (111)

Tied up in August on outside dock with our 55 Fleming. Stayed 1 night. Kids were paddleboarding, swimming and diving off the flybridge. When I went to settle up, I figured Chris would be happy we left. He said..."usually we see old folks on Flemings, you and your kids had a ball...come back anytime" He obviously knows how to take the chaos in stride!!!

A pleasant experience, 2014-07-28
Captain: , Norwalk (303)

We spent a very pleasant two nights at this marina. Its low key but very functional. The only issue is that dock power does not produce the advertised 230V but barely managed 200V. Seems to be an island issue not the marina's.

Good if your with adults, 2014-07-20
Captain: , Cedar Island Marina (63)

Price is right and every one is friendly. Bob was great to have his guys thread our 30ft through 6 other boats and get us tied up. Get a Huckelberry drink at the dock side bar. Showers sucked they are a bit dirty and you had to run around in circles to catch the drips of water. We will stay again an wound rate it 4 stars if the bathroom and showers were better.

Lots of Fun, 2013-09-18
Captain: , Mystic, CT (112)

Payne's is always a great place to stay! There is plenty to do and it's lots of fun. Cliff/Sands are great people and take pride in their marina. The dock hands will always help out and guide in/out of your dock. We will always go back!

Paynes does take Credit Cards, 2013-08-28
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (33)

8/28/13 refueled Island Packet 45 at Paynes and, yes, they take credit cards. Easy in and out. Glad I called since our alternative was going to Montauk before heading direct to Cape May.

Great location, 2013-02-19
Captain: , Milford, CT (50)

We really liked staying here. The local bar at the head of the dock always seems to attract locals and is a very attractive spot just to hangout. They have a lot of live music here. Getting into town is just a quick taxi ride away and taxis meet you right at the head of the dock.

Great Place!, 2013-01-09
Captain: , Brewer Yacht Yard- Cowesset, RI (10)

Every time we go to Block Island we try to stay at Paynes. We love the laid back and relaxed attitude of Cliff and the others that work at the docks. They are very helpful and always willing to answer any questions you have. The bar is fun or you can walk to town or take a taxi. I am not the best at docking, but they really do help get you tied up. My only advice on docking is to just do what they say and everything will be fine. We look forward to each trip to BI and Paynes Docks.

Highly entertaining, 2012-08-05
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Called ahead, told they would find room for us. And they did on very busy weekend. Most boaters come in to their slips a little differently than you might be used to. On arrival, Payne's dockhands will take over your lines and squeeze your boat through a maze of other boats till they have you where they want, then they secure your lines to prevent any mishaps with other boats. Reverse procedure on leaving. You may have to raft up as we did. A little scary at first, but Payne's hands very professional. One time experience for us, entertaining, but we like a quieter setting.

"Call me when you turn the key to get here..", 2012-06-21
Captain: , Midland Ontario (660)

"...and we'll be sure to have a spot for you". :) We like Paynes relaxed approach to reservations and the island is a gem. We are sure to be back.

Paynes in the Summer, 2011-01-06
Captain: , Pawtuxet Cove, RI (272)

This is a great place is you really get along well with others... very crowded in the summer and they squeeze more boats inhere than any other marina I have ever stayed at.. but pleasant and very competent.

Shoe Horned In With Poor Dock Support, 2010-12-24
Captain: , Manhasset Bay (20)

I am OK with being a little shoe horned in so they can make their seasonanal money but they go a little overboard on this. What I hated was the fact the person assisting me into the dock thought it was more important to be on cell phone (personal call as we over heard it) rather than take our line with both hands and help us in. We did not appreciate the small "whack" on our port side leaving a mark when all he had to do was put his phone down, pull his line and keep a put his hand out to help. It was the first time I did not tip someone in years of boating. I mentioned this to the owner and he said, gee that guys is always on his phone making deals with people.

Best in the off season, 2010-10-04
Captain: , Apponaug, Rhode Island (572)

Very busy place in season. Most protected of all the marinas. We stayed here a couple of days and loved every minute. Taxi will pick up from hotel. Close to several beaches and restaurants. Rate is better than Champlains and higher than the BI Basin for moorings. Next to dinghy beach for New Harbor moorings.

If you are into rafting up and crowds, this is for you, 2010-08-17
Captain: , Mashpee, MA (541)

They are masters at moving boats in and out, seemingly effortlessly but if you like peace and quiet, think twice. It is well located a long walk to town or taxi available. Nantucket restaurant on the hill has very good steaks. Dead Eye Dicks for burgers and breakfact, donuts and muffins on the dock. We were stacked four deep at one point and people so close we missed some of the quieter marinas. People who run the place are very competent and friendly, but you just have to like the crowd scene to enjoy it. Like a block party 24 x 7.

Crowded, but a great destination, 2010-08-15
Captain: , point judith, ri (40)

People love to hate block island, especially champlains (I've never styed there) and Paynes because they will raft you up. That's true, but they are pro's at getting you in and out and I've always been treated well at PAynes.

The "Killer Donuts" are worth the health risk.

It's a convenient location, with both the Oar and Dead Eye Dicks in walking distance, as well as old habor itself.

It's enjoyable, just go with the right attitude. It's not cuttyhunk, or even Montauk for that matter. But it is fun.

Great, friendly spot, 2009-10-10
Captain: , Belfast, Maine (215)

This was my first visit to Block Island. Arrived after dark and anchored. Went to Payne's dock because it's the closest to town and was bowled over by the friendly flolks there. Fuel was a bit high but it's an island after all. Cliff, the owner was very, very accommodating. I can't recomend this place high enough!

Crowded in august but nice, 2009-08-19
Captain: , Bay Shore (44)

The workers/owners at the can pack in and out a vessel making it mostly look easy. Very helpful on approach. No reservations so arrive early on weekend.

Crowded but fun, 2009-07-22
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (1021)

Lots of boats packed in, particularly on the weekends, but it has a kinda folksy atmosphere. Not as raucous as Champlins and it attracts more of the better looking boats who don't like anchors or moorings.

Good place, 2009-07-21
Captain: , Lindenhurst, NY (161)

Good place to stay.
Better than Champlins!

Old fashioned service, 2007-02-15
Captain: , Stratford, CT (146)

Payne's is our favorite marina on the island, especially if we have arrived without reservations. The don't monitor the VHF so the best thing to do is to approach the fuel dock and wait for someone to come out and talk with you. They have a knack for squeezing boats in, so your dock neighbors will be very, very close.
