Reviews for Oswego Marina
Great for mast work, not for overnighting, 2016-10-07
Captain: , Kingston (219)

This was the best mast destepping expereince we have had or seen at the 8 different marinas or clubs we have stepped and destepped at. The crew was completely professional, were well trained in lifting, and took great care of the mast and boat. I would recommend these guys in a heartbeat.

The marina facilities themselves are just adequate. We were directed to a 30' dock for our 40' boat even though larger docks were available. The walk to the showers and bathroom is long as they are around the bay. The biggest drawback here is the presence of a large number of charter fishing boats that fireup between 5:00 and 6:00am, roar out of their slips, and wake the marina. In future I would stay on the wall or at the YC and just come over to have my mast down.

Unfriendly service, 2016-09-17
Captain: , Catawba Island Ohio (530)

Called on phone as we were crossing the lake for gas price and the price was reasonable and the guy was very friendly, we considered staying overnight. The guy at the gas dock, when he showed up was a different guy. He clearly didn't like people or his job. Note to owner, wrong guy to put out front representing your bussiness.

Good Docks - Filthy Water, 2016-08-16
Captain: , Southport Queensland (300)

Not bad value here as long as you don't look at the water. Spent a day here on August 8 to lower our mast for the canals and the dock crew are great. The water however is filthy, not just weed and the green algae but everything from dead fish through plastic bags to beer cans and a couple of large logs. Wouldn't be a big job to fish the rubbish out with a net but it seems no-one cares as it was the same when we were here a month ago.

Not worth the price, 2016-07-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (625)

Called to make reservations for our 46' boat and confirmed the $1.50 price and that they had a pumpout. On arrival we were charged $2.00 (see they have since updated on AC) and was told the pumpout didn't work. For the same price you can stay at Alex's and get use of the pool and the breakfast buffet.
That said, the docks were nice and the town very walkable. We had a great view for the July 3rd fireworks too.

Price not as quoted, 2016-07-02
Captain: , Hendersonville, TN (40)

Over 40' boats are charged $2.00 per foot instead of the $1.50 shown for transient slips. Decent dock and good for laundry

great Location, 2016-06-05
Captain: , Barron, Wi (90)

Stayed 2 nights on way to Trent Severn. Good docks, close to downtown restaurants, friendly staff, laundry good. visit Fort Ontario for great view of Lake.

Mast Stepping, 2016-05-25
Captain: , Britt, Ontario (691)

It's the only place to get your mast stepped when entering/leaving the Erie Canal and they do an excellent job! Seems to be all fishing boats in marina and they leave really early in the morning! OK washrooms. Good restaurants nearby.

Hit and Miss, 2015-08-20
Captain: , Oneida, NY (264)

The last time I stopped here for fuel before crossing Ontario, I had no problem. The staff was very pleasant. Gas is expensive, and gas dock had partially submerged.

The previous time I stopped, I had intended to stay for a few hours while I went into town. They were going to charge me for a whole night. The girl at the counter didn't know what to do with me, and was quite confused. I made other arrangements.

good location, 2015-07-28
Captain: , Petoskey MI (240)

We stayed here after traveling through the Erie and Oswego Canals. .Nice fixed docks for larger boats. Easy in and out. Would recommend a reservation. Friendly staff. Clean restrooms and showers. Nice laundry room. Easy walk to a few restaurants and a well stocked health food grocery. Large hardware store very close.

Had my mast put up and also taken down, great service

Good stop after or before Oswego Canal, 2015-06-10
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

A number of floating transient slips, good rest rooms. No ship store. Did not use wifi. Laundry with 2 washers and dryers. Get change in office.
Clean docks, good power.
Offer gas and diesel at fuel dock.

Adaquate and convienent facility, 2015-06-01
Captain: , New Castle, NH (60)

Well maintained, protected docks that are about a 10 minute walk to an older but pleasant downtown area. The bathing and toilet facilities were clean if a bit jury rigged. We ate at Alex's, a large, popular waterfront restaurant next door, and enjoyed excellent service and good food.

Stopped here to step the mast, 2014-12-20
Captain: , ann arbor (120)

The marina was really helpful. Facilities were clean. It was a short walk into town and a number of restaurants. I had to rent a crane to step the mast. The yard master (can't remember his name) was really helpful and knew what he was doing. We had the mast shipped there and it showed up before we got there. He did a good job securing it and having it ready for when we showed up. We'd definitely go here again.

Convenient for lake crossing, 2014-07-09
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (986)

Great spot to get ready to cross the lake. Can get an early start since you don't have to wait for a lock opening. Very friendly staff. Very protected from wind, waves & current. New docks are great, but old docks are ok too. $1.50/ ft. includes electric, water, wi fi, restrooms/showers. Ate at Alex's On The Water right next to marina. The place looks very fancy, but is very comfortable, the wait staff super friendly, the food is great & prices reasonable.
Originally we were going to stay at the free lock wall, but felt very uncomfortable with the many homeless hanging out.

Good stop convenient to crossing the lake, 2014-06-29
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (919)

Staff was very nice and helpfull. We were on the north side just below the office. Restrooms there while it is open but otherwise you hike around to the south side. Had dinner at Aztec Mexican restaurant which was great food.

Convenient & accomodating, 2014-05-26
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1876)

On your way in or out of the Oswego Canal this is very convenient. Staff (Laurie) is helpfull. $2 per foot and can handle most power rquests. Plenty of water and short walk to everything in town. Stayed here many times over the years.

5-23-14 Another stop, 2 x 50 amp power not in phase at first slip by hotel, 2nd slip was occupied, ran gen and they discounted rate. Convenient and Laurie wants to help you. 15 feet of water at wall.

Convenient location, 2014-02-19
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (333)

Coming or going to Great lake Ontario, this marina is the only one that can step your mast. Staying here is not recommended. This is mainly a charter fishing marina and it smells like it. Restaraunts are close, but no grcery close to any of the marinas. That has always confused me since this is the connection to the canal and/or Great Lakes.

A Convenient Location to Lake Ontario, 2013-11-13
Captain: , Prescott, Ontario (141)

Oswego Marina is the closest marina to Lake Ontario a convenient location if coming off of the lake or waiting out the weather before continuing. The docks are super high 6 feet off the water and great if you have a deep boat but if you are in a smaller cruiser and wish to be close to the washrooms you climb up to the dock. Washrooms are clean and functional but could do with an update. This is not the marina to stay in if you like to sleep-in as a large portion of the marina is allocated to charter boats that leave before sunrise. A reasonable place to stay for the price.

Deepwater Marina, Bernie is a pro with the gin pole , 2013-08-06
Captain: , Cleveland (100)

The place is not fancy but it is an excellent and busy transient marina. Bernie and his crew are masters at pulling and setting spars. Has both high speed and low speed diesel pumps.

Decent restrooms, showers , and laundry and deepwater access-- at least 9 feet. Do not use dock #1 with a deep keel-- there is a rock and it is not 9'.

Resturant is now a parking lot but town is a short walk.

Wanda is gone and Laurie knows her stuff.

good location, 2013-06-21
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (445)

We have stayed here three times. $2 per foot. If you need help at the slip tying up tell them on the radio. South side slips are new and next to the laundry and rest rooms, which are very nice and clean. Found good restaurant about 1/2 mile walk. Bistro 129. Easy access to Maritime museum and fort via bicycle. Raise your fenders high off the water, say 2 feet.

Close to Town, 2013-06-17
Captain: , Midland Ontario (660)

We've stayed here 4 times in the past year and enjoyed our stay each time. We prefer the slips on the south side as they're closer to services and put us closer to onshore restaurants. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Friendly Staff, Decent Facility, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Avondale, PA (448)

We were given a slip on the south side of the basin - close to the heads and the short walk to town. Manager was friendly and eager to help on this busy Sunday afternoon. Head and showers were clean and adequate. The closest restaurant ("The Pressbox") had good tasting fare at a reasonable price. More (untried) eateries are a short walk into town.

Excellent Jumping Off Spot for Lake Ontario, 2013-06-10
Captain: , Charleston, SC (422)

Perhaps 10 or so slips for transients depending on the size of your boat. Boats on the South side will have 24/7 access to head and showers whle those on the North side (smaller slips) wll have to walk to the South side after closing hours. Excellent place to have your mast stepped and great access to restaurants and grocery. Easy access as well to fuel.

Oswego Marina, 2012-09-18
Captain: , Toronto (280)

The Ports Guide offers some confusing and misleading information regarding the facilities of Oswego in general. It would be far more helpful if they just pointed to this location and said, "Go here if you need your mast raised or lowered". The staff are this marina are knowledgeable and helpful. While waiting for the winds to drop so we could raise our mast I did a little engine maintenance. I ended up with a broken bracket for the alternator that ran the fridge compressor. The manager located a company that could fabricate a replacement, drove the broken part to the workshop, convinced them to have it ready by the next day and only charge me $50! She then drove back to pick the part up and refused anything for gas, etc. It's hard to find that kind of service these days from anyone who has anything to do with boats! They also did an excellent job stepping the mast. I can't say enough about this location.

Step or deStep, 2012-09-05
Captain: , Bonita Springs, FL (221)

Although the facility amenities and grounds are not the best, the marina is within walking distance of most things you could need. It is THE place to do you mast before or after cruising the Canals. Very efficient and reasonably priced.

It's just a place to stop..., 2012-08-06
Captain: , St. Catharines (498)

We actually stopped here twice.. Once on the way into the Erie canal, and once on the way back. We have a 40 steel trawler that is quite beamy and weighs 12 tons.. The last thing I want to do is shoehorn it into a small slip next to a tupperware boat. We prefer the wall.. Had to convince the folks in the office that we can't fit into a slip, expecially not in 35mph winds and we prefer the wall.. I was told the "wall is not for little boats.. it's reserved for big boats".. The lady in the office is obviously not a boater.. Wifi is spotty (marginal)..The wall only has 50amp plugs on one end, and 30amp plug on the other.. Bring long shore power cords or a bag full of adapters. Next time I'll stay at the lock wall..

Not a pleasant place in the least..., 2012-07-25
Captain: , Pultneyville, NY (285)

The female that works at the fuel dock is an unfriendly person. She refused us permission to stop there temporarily so we could clear in using the video phone.

Instead we had to tie up at the abandoned hotel, walk the long way around, and then clear in.

While we were jumping through these hoops NO ONE STOPPED AT THE FUEL DOCK. NO ONE.

I cannot imagine why.

Right in town!, 2012-07-15
Captain: , Saugatuck, MI (144)

Despite what others have experienced in the marina, our stay was fine. We had help upon arrival, and were treated very well. The marina is located right in town, so it was an easy walk to several restaurants. There is a Big M grocery on 1st street, but you'll need to walk a bit further. If you need a larger supply of groceries, be prepared to call for cab service (the grocery will call for you.) We were charged $5.50 for the trip back to the marina with several bags of groceries, and the cost was well worth it!
We didn't need fuel, but the fuel dock is conveniently located for refueling before docking or upon departure. My wife even found a major fabric/hobby store right up the street!

Very nice visit...., 2012-07-01
Captain: , Marietta, GA (260)

We were very pleased with this marina. Katie was especially helpful, and the entire staff was very friendly. Slip was nice and wide, and laundry was clean and convenient. Shopping is easy bike ride and restaurants are walking distance as well as easy ride to Fort Ontario on the bike. We also had mechanical issues, and the staff was more than helpful in hooking us up with a mechanic and assisting in finding parts. Overall, we were very happy with our experience.

Surprised by Ratings, 2012-06-11
Captain: , santa barbara (696)

We have had a much different experience. Dockmaster assisted with squeezing our 18'+ beam into 20' slip, then drove me to the office. I walked back by choice. We extended stay and staff coordianted on weekend with onwer and came to the boat to assist with paperwork. We have not had any work done but did use laundry which is modern and clean. We walked the docks and talked with professional fisherman who were there - very pleasant.

butt end of Oswego Canal, 2012-05-16
Captain: , Toronto (60)

Travelled for most of a year and this place was the worst experience we had. Locals call the operator "the pirate" with cause. Had us race for a day to make Saturday AM appointment for mast raising then didn't show. Kept us for the weekend (at transient rates) and then made up the most amazing "safety rules". Awful ending to a beautiful trip.

Only place in town, 2012-03-04
Captain: , Olcott, NY (2536)

Unless you want to take on Lake Ontario with your mast on deck, this is the only gin pole in oswego.
Bernie knows his stuff, but stuff does happen.
The marina office staff reminds me of "the Soup N---" from Seinfeld's tv show.
Diesel fuel pump speed is so strong it's difficult to fuel a small vessel without a spill.
Pump out is good!

Watch out for Wanda!, 2011-10-28
Captain: , Milwaukee (121)

We came through here about five years ago. When a squal kicked up 70 mph winds the dock manager Wanda untied our boat without notice claiming that she was worried that we might rip her cleats right out of the concrete!

Did she ever think about what the damage of untying someone's boat might cause???

The only use we had for the facility was access to their ginpole to install out mast after passing through the locks and low bridges...

All the basics expert at mast work, 2011-07-14
Captain: , Wickford, RI (550)

Perfectly adequate facilities; two restaraunts in easy walking distance, closest one has free WiFi. Were very helpful with our first-ever unstepping of he mast. Know their stuff.

Oswego Marina, 2011-07-11
Captain: , Hampton, VA (389)

We moved over here from the west wall due to generator issues. The local mechanic came over and helped us out. The marina was buisy with traffic due to a Salmon and Trout tournament. If you stop here go by the fish cleaning shack and see if the local fisherman donated fresh caught fish to the cleaner. We paid $3.00 per fish to be cleaned!! What a deal for fresh local fish. Restaurants and 2 grocery stores close by.

Good place to wait for crossing, 2011-07-08
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Staff very friendly and helpful. Stayed here for 3 nights waiting for crossing to Trenton. Local fishermen very helpful with Lake Ontarion weather.

Walked downtown to nice cafe. Barber available across the bridge at the Downtown Barbershop. Good haircut for $12.00.

I would stay here again.

Oswego Marina, 2011-06-22
Captain: , Bradenton, Fl (42)

Newer docks on the south side, clean bathrooms and friendly staff. Bernie took our lines and was very helpful with local information. Excellent restaurant next door. Easy run to the break wall at Lake Ontario.

horrible service with an attitude, 2011-06-22
Captain: , Holland, mi (20)

Avoid this if at all possible. Unfriendly and high prices on fuel.

Really bad experience, 2011-03-11
Captain: , Iroquois (1230)

We stopped here to put up our masts after transiting the canal basically not knowing where else to go.
They are expensive, the staff were surly to the point of rudeness. We were pushed off the dock without having the opportunity to re-attach the rigging properly and we then found that they had sold what we thought was "our" spot to someone else. Clearly miscommunication, but they basically let the customers fight amongst themselves for dock space.
We normally tip masting/dismasting staff. We chose not to do so this time and will never go back.

Not Much for Your Money, 2010-10-31
Captain: , Wilson, NY (432)

Staff not helpful. Restrooms OK. Expensive for this area.

Prepare for the crossing, 2010-07-02
Captain: , Memphis TN (977)

Good place to wait out the weather. dockmaster was very helpful to us. Can be breezy upon entry. Good depth

Holding stop for Lake Ontario, 2010-06-30
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

Very basic marina - new docks but minimum services. This is a good place to re-erect what ever you had to lower to get through the Erie Canal.

It's a long, long walk from the slips to the office but exercise never hurts. It is close to downtown and the restrauant next door is one on the best in town.

Good job stepping mast, 2008-07-20
Captain: , Newport, RI (10275)

I had my mast stepped there and Bernie was very friendly and helpful. The office staff wasn't very friendly. You may have a long walk to the bathrooms, which were OK. Laundry was good. Often had petrolum smell. Industrial area but several good restaurants.

Oswego marina, 2008-05-22
Captain: , Patterson, La (1441)

I agree with Captain Sterling. Unfreindly staff. Over priced.
Their fuel hose is way too short and requires most boats to undock and turn around to get the the opposite fuel tanks.
A definate, try some other place

Over price, unfriendly marina staff, 2007-07-10
Captain: , Key Largo (5304)

stay anywhere else, at $2 a foot this place sucks!
