Reviews for Orchid Bay Marina
Great Marina on a wonderful island, 2017-07-11
Captain: , Pompano Beach, FL (190)

Orchid Bay really is doing well. The docks are in good shape, the service by the marina staff was top notch, and the facilities are almost new. Private air conditioned bathrooms, nice pool area, and well located to the town just a short walk away. The break water is not perfect in heavy south wind conditions, but did not give us any problems even in 20k winds out of the south. The easy walking to the town and Nippers was a bonus. I rate this as one of the nicer marinas we stayed at in the Abacos over 3+ weeks.

Good place , 2017-05-20
Captain: , Punta Gordo (181)

Truly Amazing, Punta Gorda, Florida 4/26/17

The review below is our buddy boat and agree with all said. We did go to the store about a five block walk had a good selection. Also Nipper will come to the marina and pick you up then take you back call them on channel 16. We talked with some people that ate at the marina restaurant they said it was good. Sundowners on the porch at sunset very nice

Nice place, 2017-05-04
Captain: , Punta Gorda (30)

We spent 2 nights here. Found the staff friendly and area scenic. There is no longer a security gate it is unmanned. The bathrooms and showers were adequate. The break water was noisy but effective. Getting in and out was easy with plenty of water. Enjoyed the pool and the the view.

Clean, clean, clean facilities, 2017-04-04
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (1234)

I think these were the nicest shower / bathrooms we've encountered in a long time. The on-site restaurant is quite good, just be prepared for a crowded wing-nite. The harbormaster, Evnell, is very friendly and helpful w/your lines. There is some surge, with a southern wind, but not as bad as some of the the other reviewers have portrayed. Sundays are a bit of a zoo, with many boats coming in for the Nipper's Pig Roast. Too many 50 yr olds behaving like they're on college spring break, but hey, it's just one day. Other days, it's really, really, quiet here and a nice break from some of the other spots.

rolly in south winds, 2017-02-22
Captain: , Salem Ma (790)

They messed me up coming inby telling me which side the tie up would be and what slip only to decide at the last second that we were too deep. So we moved over to the "deep draft" slip and after we got tried up I could tell that we were going to be a foot out of the water at low tide. So we had to move again!

The place is nice with a pool and resturant (been here 4 days and haven't used it). Showers and bathrooms clean and nice. Docjage was $0.55/ft till Marchand the electric was $15/day. Water was $0.35/gal.

Could get Wifi at the slip even with my bullet. I finally paid the $20 for a week of MaxFi and it was good enough to stream Netflix.

The place is real rolly in a south wind even thougyh there is a break water for the waves.

easy access to stuff on the island and there is a pretty grocery store an easy walk away and a liquor store a little further.

Great February Rate, 2017-02-20
Captain: , Chicago (660)

We got a discount rate through the end of the month. Staff was helpful. Met us at the boat and helped tie all lines and hook up electric. Marina was quite empty when we came in and then was slammed two days later when winds picked up. Town very small but cute. WiFi only works sitting outside the office on the porch. Does not work on the docks. Nice facility but we rocked nonstop. Not much protection and we moved the entire time even when the winds were calm.

The best view in the Abacos, 2016-12-18
Captain: , big horn (10)

We have been coming to Orchid Bay for years. No crowds, great winter rates (50 cents/ft. or $500 f0r 30 non consecutive days between Dec. 15th and March 15th) The walking is great. The town is friendly. Terrific for dogs. If you like a elaxed out island lifestyle this is the place to come. Only negative is exposure to waves when the wind blows from the southwest. This marina deserves the support of cruisers.

A great facility and nice marina., 2016-11-12
Captain: , Kemah, TX (230)

I had been here previously on a friends trawler a few years ago so we came back to stay while cruising the Abacos on my boat, Caya.
I'd agree with all the previous comments, dock master and help are great. Facility is well kept and office people very nice. Since we were here early in the season we've nearly had the marina to ourselves and the on site resturant, Sunsetter, has just opened.
Easy walk to Nippers and the grocery store.

Excellent Experience, 2016-09-04
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (123)

We pulled in on Thursday, July 7 after 2 nights at anchor at No Name Cay. MacKenzenzie was on us like gravy on rice. He got us tied up and hooked up to power in record time. Very personable.

The marina is top notch, and we are used to a great marina, being from Sunset Bay in Stuart. The restaurant was excellent, the cracked conch was very good. They have golf cars for rent tright there at the marina, and we rented one for two days.

The pool was nice to have after a hot day at the beach, and they served my wife her favorite cocktail, Bacardi anejo and coke with lime right at the poolside. She was in heaven.

Met a really nice couple from Mount Dora, Doc and Donna. Very nice place to meet people.

Also went to Grabbers for dinner on Friday night, and it was so good we went back Saturday night, and it was even better. They were just starting up Karaoke night when we left, it looked like fun.

We even went to Nippers for late lunch on Friday when we got there. The cracked conch was ok, not as good as Orchid Bay's. The anejo and coke was very good.

Orchid Bay and Guana is a must stop.

Peaceful Place, 2016-05-06
Captain: , warm waters (828)

Date of stay: 3/26 & 3/27/16
Very nice facility. The newer bath house is quite roomy, very clean, but with light water pressure. We enjoyed the pool and the restaurant. Dock hands very skilled at docking under variety of conditions. Staff friendly. Wifi did not reach docks; was intermittent on the porch.

Great Stop!, 2015-06-16
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (1145)

The marina is really nice. Water and power great, people friendly and helpful and the Wifi is free. But the marina - no password free wifi doesn't reach all the way down the dock. So be sure to ask for the password for the password protected wifi and it works great. And use the heads in the green building - they are cleaner and more modern than the heads in the marina building. Grocery, Nipper's and Grabber's are a walk away - Have fun!

Beautiful Setting, 2015-05-22
Captain: , New Rochelle, NY (1000)

The slips are on the Sea of Abaco, protected by a stone jetty. The views from my pilothouse are absolutely incredible, as they are from the swimming pool and the restaurant. The food is very good and Saturday is rib night, excellent! Nipper's and Grabbers are a shor walk. Grocery store nearby.

Needs better WiFi, 2015-04-08
Captain: , Slidell, La. (1148)

We hoped to catch up on some work, but had to go to office to get WiFi, Otherwise I'd give a 4 star. Staff is friendly. Docks are old but no splinters. The pool was cool and relaxing. Easterly cross winds make getting into slips a little rough. Easy walk to Nippers where the beer is cold and the food is good. Didn't eat at Sundowners but it looked worth trying next visit.

Great View but missing amenities, 2015-04-01
Captain: , Marco Island (50)

The restaurant is good, water pressure and price of water reasonable and electricity at .75 a Kw is about average. Nice restrooms, shower and lounge area. On the negative side the docks are showing their age. Apparently the original owner went bankrupt. The laundry is the most expensive we have ever encountered at $20.00 a load (washer and dryer). The WiFi does not reach the docks so you must go into the lounge to receive it. But, the views from the slips looking out over the Sea of Abaco are great.

Pros and Cons, 2015-03-28
Captain: , Charlestown (946)

Nice clean facility with restaurant on site. Bathrooms were clean and also have showeres. All are individual rooms with shouwer and toilet. WIFI is only available while sitting on the deck by the office.
The worst part is where the wind is coming from. In a southwest wind you will rock and roll all night if it is strong.

Feb 9th and March 19th Stay at Orchid Bay, 2015-03-27
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (650)

In Feb we stayed one night at a special $.50 foot rate At that rate we considered the stay worthwhile even though there were issues. In March we stayed another night at the $1.75/foot rate with a 10% discount. The issues remained: 1) wifi did not work (verified by talking to other boaters), 2) Laundry machines were not available to be used by boat owners and 3) We were docked at slip a long way from office. When I asked why we could not have a closer slip I was informed that the electric meters did not work at the closer slips. While the office staff was friendly I do not feel the normal rate was worth the stay with issues identified. However, the facilities are beautiful and views of the Sea of Abaco georgous.

Nice place to rest and enjoy the peacefull setting, 2015-03-01
Captain: , Quebec, Canada (268)

The saturday night Ribsteak ( one pound )is delicious and at ten dollars, you can not go wrong. There is a long cover deck where you can enjoy the view on the water while reading or using the Wifi. Free coffee on the deck in the morning while watching the boats go by, what can you ask more?

Prices have dropped but facilities are still top drawer, 2015-02-28
Captain: , Edgewater, MD (90)

In Feb 2015, we stopped in for 2 nights. A special offer was in effect at $0.50/foot. For us it was cheaper than the $20 moorings rented by Dive Guana. Excellent showers and Internet. friendly expert management. Clean and well maintained. Docks have water and electricity. What' not to like? Rates will go up to $1.75 but it would still be better than a mooring with no shower or bathroom. The faculty has great landscaping and a spectacular view. We have been all over the Bahamas for years, and I would rate this marina right up there with the best, especially when a special rate is in effect. The restaurant is top rated also on the island. One of the few spots where everything is not fried.

Very Clean, resort quality, 2014-09-09
Captain: , Wantagh NY (601)

Had a really nice stay at this marina, easy walk over to the beach and snorkle, and of course Nippers, which quite frankly could have passed on, but everyone likes different things.

One of my favorite stays, 2014-06-16
Captain: , San Diego (300)

Clean facilities, friendly staff, short walk to the beach where there is some great snorkeling. Its easy to find just hike down the stairs from Nippers, walk about 300 to the left on the beach and swim out from there to see the best part of the reef. Food at Nippers is good as is the Nippers cocktail. Also Grabbers has a great pig roast on Sat. if you cant make the one a Nippers on Sunday

Not much protection, 2014-06-02
Captain: , Bochum (318)

in any kind of wind, the breakwater is fairly ineffective. The guys on the dock are friendly and helpful, the ladies in the office not much at first, they offer complimentary coffee in the morning. The 1lb. rib special for $10 on sat night in the rest. was very excellent. The pool is small but refreshing, restrooms are excellent and laundry at $20 load ridiculous!!! Well stocked grocery store 5min. down the road. Nippers & Grabbers must be some of the funkiest places in the Abacos.

good stay can get rough in slip, 2014-05-28
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1804)

Depending on wind direction can be very rough in your slip as the breakwater to south gets topped at high tide.
Small pool, golf cart rental recommended, $30 for 3 hrs or $50 all day. Restaurant on site, grocery store 5 min walk. Grabbers and Nippers 10 min walk. Lots of fun riding golf cart around and exploring. Fuel on site. Did not use fuel dock or water. Electric was good as was excellent help docking. Knowledgable check in staff. Orchard Vay residential area is off limits. Beautiful beach on North side of island. Amazing Private Baker Bay Marina worth a dingy ride to visit.
Just watch the wind direction and speed or your be very unhappy here.

Orchid Bay Marina, 2014-04-12
Captain: , Miami (101)

god location, excellent dock master, marina staff office no very friendly like dont care if you return or not.

Nice low key marina., 2014-04-08
Captain: , Miami (303)

Family owned, well run, spotlessly clean. A little bouncy in South or West winds due to a somewhat porous sea wall. Two docks, favor the outer slips on the south dock for deeper water 6ft +. Management and staff are uniformly professional and pleasant. McKenzie is probably the happiest dockmaster that I've met. Rate $1.75 per ft, Elec 30 Amp = $8pd, 50Amp = $20pd, water .35 cents per gall. Fuel; Diesel =$6.35 cc, $6.05 cash. Gas $6.45 cc, $6.15 cash.

Update; Just checked the laundry. Despite having 7 washers and 6 driers you have to pay a local lady $20 PER LOAD to do your laundry. I asked and they said that it was because they had damage to the machines in the past. Management need to review this policy ASAP. Dropped one star.

Nice spot to see, 2014-03-14
Captain: , Jupiter florida (40)

Dock are a little old. Power is great. Walking distance to Nippers. Water depth is good to T docks. Probably not a good place to sit in a Westery. Restraunt just opened, looks promising. Would stop here again.

Orchid Bay Marina, 2013-06-15
Captain: , Merritt Island, FL (556)

We stayed here 2 nights: June 13-14, 2013. The marina docks are in very good condition. The office, showers, laundry, restaurant, and pool are first class. The staff was courteous and helpful. Perks: free coffee and nice air-conditioned restrooms. Down side: south and west wind causes a little rolling in the slips, not a big problem. Easy walk or cart ride to Nippers and Grabbers.

A clean, well-built facility with not much going on, 2013-05-20
Captain: , Merritt Island, FL (372)

The place is beautiful (nice office, showers, restaurant, pool, docks, landscaping, etc.) but surprisingly quiet. It seems like it was the beginning of a big development project that never quite took off. That which they did, though, they did well. It's not usually too busy, which suits us fine. It is a bit on the pricey side, but you expect that for such a nice facility. Proximity to stuff you want to see is excellent. It's a short walk to Nippers and an excellent grocery store. We've been back several times and have never been disappointed.

Decent place, but too pricy., 2013-05-08
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

No protection from west winds. You rock from ferry and other boats. If you want a USA type marina, then this is it. Nice walk to town, Nippers, Grabbers.....

Bouncy and Empty, 2013-03-21
Captain: , Sandusky, OH (294)

Odd place. Three boats at docks, all bouncing around in a westerly. Power good and bathrooms are very nice. Some strange things like the laundry room is locked and only the lady at the reception desk has a key. She blamed it on the wind. All other reviews are accurate with our experience. An okay stop but maybe a mooring ball would have been better.

Ruff Westerlies, 2013-03-14
Captain: , Cape Coral (120)

Pulled in during a westerly blow and bounced pretty good. Pretty grounds and would recommend stay and rent a golf cart to go to Nippers.

Okay at Orchid Bay, 2013-02-18
Captain: , Connelly N.Y. (353)

Orchid Bay offers a stop on Guana Cay that competes well with the high end place called Bakers Bay. Orchid is right in the settlement making it a very short walk to The Crossroads, and Nippers both of which offer good food.
They are frequently out of fuel so make sure you have what you need before going there.

Close to Nippers, 2012-07-30
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1306)

Which is a plus when you want to walk home after sunday's pig roast.
My last stay they had power problems... but that's the islands.

very nice and clean, 2012-07-08
Captain: , ft myers beach (790)

Best heads/showers around. Nice restaurant and staff for all facilities.
Rent a golf cart to see town and more. Good snorkeling at Nippers beach especially if you swim out to second and third reef. I would forgo Nippers for food, good place to drink. Rats are part of island life, but preferrably not while you are eating at Nippers.

Great place, 2012-07-07
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (1089)

Orchid Bay is very well run and it shows in the details. From super clean heads and showers, a delightful pool area, a lounge deck overlooking the water, neatly manicured landscaping, and perhaps THE most helpful staff in the Abacos. Only downside was with a westerly wind and a high lunar tide, the breakwater was not very effective -- and that made for a rolling night in the slip. Of course, Nippers is the place to see and be seen, but go easy on the rum "fru fru" drinks -- they will bite you back!

Family run marina, 2012-05-30
Captain: , Greenville TX (580)

Very friendly -- $5 tokens for laundry, but they gave us a couple extra just in case the dryers didn't dry.
Close to several good restaurants and grocery.
Rates are good.

I'd definitely go here before going back to Green Turtle for the beautiful beaches at Nippers and Grabbers both, as well as the ease of access to services.

Great Island, Good Marina, 2012-04-04
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1025)

The marina itself is well kept and very nice, though often almost empty. You pay for dockage and electricity, though they do allow you to turn down water.

Local grocery, shops, etc. are okay, but the reason to go to Orchid Bay is Nippers, Grabbers, the Atlantic beaches and some of the other establishments on the island.

If we were looking for a marina in the area, we would definitely go back. However, with the anchorage and mooring balls close by, I am not sure we will be wanting a marina.

Picture perfect, 2012-04-01
Captain: , Utica, Ohio (245)

This place still looks brand new as of 3-31-2012. Best showers/restrooms I've found in the Bahamas.

In spite of breakwall the slips are pretty exposed to wind and current, so depending on weather you may bounce around a bit.

Oceanside beach is a short walk away, and there's some nice places to eat (including the marina) a very short walk away.

This is one of our favorite stops.

2nd stay here., 2012-03-15
Captain: , Madison, Ohio (400)

Nice Marina, they did have water and electric, the dockmaster was very helpful, Showers & Restrooms were very clean. Resturant has reopened with a limited menu, but very good. They were running a special this week where you got a free night if you stayed 3 nights. All in all I would stay here again.

enjoyable stop, 2012-03-12
Captain: , Westport,Ma (710)

There was a good blow so we choose to tie up here, 5 of us came in together after being hold up in Green Turtle for 6 days. We were the only ones here when we came in a few more boats came in later. we had the place to ourselves pool was nice a bit cool. the deck by the resturant was beautiful for watching the sunset together. Laundry $5 per wash $5 for a dry ouch! The showers are much nicer in the green building. golf carts available for rent $50/day town is very walkable. Nice grocery store well stocked, icecream shop, veggie stand, liquior store, a new breakfast only resturant. the resturant at the marina at orchid bay is now open for light fare menu very limited right now but food was good. nice stop with great beach bars and most of the essentials one would need.

Wonderful Atmosphere, 2012-02-26
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (453)

Orchid Bay is currently charging $1.00 per foot plus electric ($10 per night for sailboats, and 35 cents per gallon of RO water (the only water available on Guana Cay except that which has been collected in Cisterns). Orchid Bay is expecting to finish their financial reorganization at the end of February, 2012, according to desk personnel. There is no information on when the restaurant will reopen, but there are golf cart rentals available, and Grabbers and Nippers are both within a 10 minute walk.

Orchid Bay Marina, 2011-08-05
Captain: , Warrington, Pa (116)

Very nice marina. Excellent facilities. Nice restaurant, beautiful pool and a breathtaking view of the Sea of Abaco from the deck. The dock master and office personnel were very responcive and they provided transportation to Nippers a short golfcart ride away.

Perfect timing, The Barefoot Man was playing. What a party. This has to be a must see for anyone sailing the Abacos.

Questionable financial condition?, 2011-06-15
Captain: , Clearwater, Florida (141)

Although the facility is well kept, the electric and fuel availability are intermittent. Locals say the marina occasionally misses bill payments and creditors turn off electric and refuse to deliver fuel. This has happened so often that local shop owners feel transient boaters avoid the marina, and the shop owners then suffer from lack of customers.

BEAUTIFUL!, 2011-04-09
Captain: , Wilmington Deleware (330)

This marina is wonderful. The staff are friendly and the pool is a great spot to just sit and watch the waters of the Abaco. A must stop, Nipper's, great food and what a view of the Atalantic from the bar; a short walk from the marina. Good stop with a pretty decent grocery store.

First Class Facility, 2011-01-26
Captain: , Hernando Beach, Fl (300)

Very nice facility with a friendly helpful staff. Close walk into town or rent a golf cart and go exploring. Nippers and Grabbers have a lively crowd of partiers. The marina is very well protected from winds and wakes. A nice restaurant is on site.

Very nice, 2009-07-27
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (334)

Concur with other reviews. Winds were 10-20 from SE and marina was comfortable.

Modern, pristine, friendly, 2009-05-20
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (1344)

Thanks to the rocky breakwater shielding Orchid Bay's two wooden piers, the marina is well protected from prevailing winds. We weathered a light SE gale here, and while there was some movement we were safe and comfortable throughout. Quick answers and good entry instructions via VHF, capable docking assistance from experienced dockhands, solid 235V electric, clean heads, modern, well-maintained facilities throughout. The settlement is a 5- to 10-minute walk away, as is Nippers, a popular and colorful beachfront bar that serves food too. Friendly service. On-site restaurant which I did not try.

Too rockey in SW winds, 2009-04-22
Captain: , Sarasota, FL - Newport, RI (435)

We stayed here only one night. Great dockmaster but despite the breakwater the SW winds pushed the waves into the harbor and all the boats were rocking and rolling-- we stayed longer than planned at NIppers to avoid the motion-- not a bad thing but not what you want in a marina after making it throught the Whale!!

Modern and New, 2007-06-10
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (258)

Visited late May, 2007: We loved this marina. Deep crystal clear water, strong new docks, great dock masters, new facilities, laundry, restroom/showers, beautiful pool area and other facilities. First rate all the way.

As mentioned, its about a 15 minute walk to Nippers, groceries are a five minute walk.

The harbor is well protected from easterlies and the the sea wall protects the harbor from wind driven waves or surge. The marina is a wonderful stop ... would have been happy to have just stayed.
