Reviews for Olverson's Lodge Creek Marina, Inc.
Rustic Resort, 2016-09-06
Captain: , New Buffalo, Michigan (780)

Rustic, laid back, full service marina with some of the friendliest people you could meet. Courtesy cars are available which is needed to groceries, hardware store and RW sporting goods. Facilities may be old and wooden but very comfortable, just like your own recliner. Fellow boaters on our dock were very helpful and shared much info with us about cruising the Potomac and visiting DC. Fred, Cass, Steve and Rodney are always available to assist. We had parts shipped in and they were delivered via wagon as soon as we arrived. We were here during the remnants of hurricane Hermine and felt very secure.

It's All About the People, 2016-06-29
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (602)

OK, Olverson's is a "rustic marina". That said, it will always be my stop when I am in the area. Great price on gas. Strong WIFI signal. Boaters lounge, liars club area on the dock for trading stories, courtesy cars, 30 and 50 amp service, gas, diesel, good water pressure, pumpout (including flushing with fresh water and a second pumpout), clean bathrooms. Olverson's has character which is more important to me than glitz and bling. And... the people including Rod on the dock and Fred, the owner, can not be more pleasant and helpful.

I came to get fuel. The managers were very nice and the marina had okay facilities. It seemed a bit sleepy but it would be a nice place to relax.

This marina fails in every measurement, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Road Harbour - BVI (789)

The facilities here are run down, old and dirty. The restrooms are missing locks, the fixtures are nasty and most of the sinks have no plugs. The laundry is $2.00 per load to wash and $2.00 to dry. The machines are in good condition but the room in which they are located is decrepit and outdoors. There is no place to sit and wait while you do your wash (the captain%u2019s lounge not nearby).

The wi-fi is a DSL line shared by everyone. It is by far the slowest internet connection we have had since the days of dial up. There is no over the air TV stations and no cable on the docks.

The electrical wiring on the dock is a fire waiting to happen. I observed light fixtures hanging by the wires. The breakers for shore power are located in a huge box midway up the dock and not labled. This means you have to plug and unplug the cable into a live socket. Dock boards are missing nails and in some cases (like on our t-head) entire boards are missing. There are no fire extinguishers or fire hoses on the docks. I observed one tenant using a grill on these old dry wooden docks.

At check in, I went into the office. I was told by Steven and Lynn, they would look at the options for us and stop by the boat later. They did not come by. I have never been in a more filthy disgusting public room in my life. People%u2019s desks were piled with papers and atop were plates of half eaten meals. The carpet looked like it has never been vacuumed in the 40 years Fred claims to have been doing this. After leaving, I felt I needed a shower. Let%u2019s not even go there.

Our goal was to have a slip here for about 4 months while cruising the Chesapeake Bay area. We planned to pay the monthly rates and come and go on little jaunts. We specifically asked for a slip not a T-head as we have issues getting on and off the vessel (bad knees). We have a step through transom and when backed into a slip we can board and disembark easily.

We contacted Fred (owner) at the marina several months prior to our planned stay and clearly communicated our needs. We were told no problem and to call when we were about 60 days out.

We called about 60 days out. We tried to put down a credit card deposit to hold a space. We were told there was no need and to call again 30 days out. We were willing to pay for the slip even if we were late in the season getting here. Again, we were told no need and no problem.

We called 30 days out. Each time we called Fred (who claims to never write anything down) didn%u2019t have a clue who we were. We had to explain our needs on each call. Each time we were told no problem. When we called again 2 weeks out he asked if we could delay our arrival as they were full over the 4th of July. We thought this is the least we could do since they were willing to hold a slip for us. However, they did not have the slip. We arrived; all they had was a t-head. This is useless for us.

We had to share the t-head with another vessel and we hung off the end by 10 feet into the channel making it difficult to properly secure the vessel. When I complained, I was told by Fred, %u201CI know what I am doing, I have been in business for 40 years%u201D. I have been sailing for 30 years and I can assure you I have never meet such a bad business person. While we were docking, he buzzed about us on his Boston Whaler shouting directions over the noise of the outboard. At one point, he bumped our boat.

Enough said?

I opted to give them two stars (not one star) because they did not charge us for our 3 day stay while we searched for another location to accommodate us.

Home sweet home!, 2015-07-10

This is just how we felt coming to Ovlerson's our first time. Fred and Cass Olverson love people, boating, their marina, and MTOA (Marine Trawler Owner Association) This is MTOA's official marina for their members. Stopped with an MTOA group for 2 days and got the red carpet. This marina is neat as a pin and as friendly as you will ever find on the bay. Visited George Washington and Robert E Lee's birth homes, were personally greeted by the restraunt owners we visited, 84 degree pool, loaner cars, beautiful setting on Lodge Creek. Consider joining MTOA and get a free night!

Diesel and a pump out, 2015-05-08
Captain: , Solomons, MD (60)

Recommended by locals at Kinsail Marina since Port Kinsail might not have diesel we came here. $2.99 per gallon and $5 for the pump out. The gentalman that helped was pleseant, patient, and helpful. Be aware that the fuel dock is at the shore side of "A" dock not on a T-pier. Pump out hose is too short to reach across the boat but fuel is plently long so side moore accordingly. We didn't stay the night so I can't rate any of the other facilities.

A marina I hope I can return, 2014-11-07
Captain: , Toledo, OH (40)

This is my second visit this year and there’s nothing but positive to say of Olverson’s marina. When doing my AGL earlier in the summer a friend told me to stay here and though a few miles away from the “straightforward” route I’ll always return here. Rustically beautiful, everything works and all what you need is there. Reasonably priced including diesel. And the people – marina folks, your slip neighbors even people living around are just great. My son from Finland spent one week with me here and his opinion was something like this: …this is the original America.

I and my old Marine Trader needed a lot of “extra” services during my two stays and Fred and crew never let me down. Thank you all.

Rustic Family Marina, 2014-10-23

You are part of the family when you stay here. Pool, courtesy car, great washrooms, and everyone is anxious to make you feel at home. It is far from fancy but very worthwhile.

A Cadillac with tail fins, 2014-09-18
Captain: , Pinnacle, NC, USA (1422)

Wow! Where have you seen cobwebs being knocked off the dock's overhead covers, daily? Or tow vehicle & trailer storage, all 60' of it in my case, stored under roof? A perfect fit to our trailered trawler boating choice.

Great Spot, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Cincinnati (32)

Very accommodating and friendly. We Lauched and stored truck and trailer here for a 10 cruise up the bay and back. Fred, the owner could not have been more helpful.

Welcomed by the owner. Offered the loan of a car to go to dinner. They honor Boat U.S. Would recommend you give it a try.

At Olverson's Lodge Creek Marina, you are never a coustomer. You're family. The best shelter on the Potomac from any point of wind. Down home feeling all around. Loaner car and directions to town. It's all here - no need to look around.

Best Marina we've found on the Potomac!, 2014-07-08
Captain: , Alexandria, VA (50)

I've transited the Potomac from Alexandria to Point Lookout every year for the past 7 years. This is, without a doubt, the best marina I've found. Wonderful management, courtesy cars, reaonable rates, on shore kitchen/clubhouse available, beautifully clean restrooms - the list goes on and on. Fred Olverson, and the rest of the staff, will go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. Five stars, two thumbs up, fantastic. We'll be back!

Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

This place is worth the stop. Several cars for loan, good laundry and all other facilities. It is very old and quaint, but really nice. The owners history is worth reading about. Nice folks. We plan on coming back. Also a good stop to talk with locals for information on where to go from here.

Friendly Fun Marina, 2014-05-31
Captain: , Annapolis (3379)

We stopped in for one night and stayed for 3. They have several loaner cars and are very generous in the range they let you travel to do errands. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The piers are covered even at the open slips affording protection from sun and rain.

Wonderfully Consistent, 2013-08-23
Captain: , Sea Cliff, NY (1075)

After reading all the glowing reviews, we had to see for ourselves. Wow! We had a Great experience.
Remarkably kind and considerate folks combined with great amenities and a great price make this marina a top choice. We have been slowing down this year, seeking out more "out of the way" places, and this will now become a standard stop for us on the Potomac.
The pool was fantastic, the grounds spotless, the bath/showers clean and we were treated like we had been a customer for years.
Do yourself a favor and spend a night or two relaxing the old fashioned way.

I give this marina 5 stars because it is deserved, 2013-07-20
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

No queston. Older marina but all facilities sound and servicable. Established in a very protected cove with all amenities expected of of a five star Marina. Courtesy vehicle to get you to rests., supermarket, hardware store etc. . Pool, covered walkways on the docks, clean private showers, laundry and most of all Fred the owner. Fred invited us and others to go with him on his trawler across the Potomac to attend the St Marys College River Concert series then served up snacks on the way. It was a touch of class. Best prices on the river. I will be back.

Captain: , Kent Narrows, MD (200)

Fred and Cas Olverson and staff shine as some of the friendliest and most helpful people we know. We used their van for shopping and enjoyed the evening 1700 get togethers. In addition to being one of the best priced marinas for transient dockage, particularly MTOA and BOAT US, the facilities are clean and functional, although they are quite old. We only used the facilities for two days and did not have repair needs; it was our first stay, but we'll be back. Lodge Creek is well protected and was a good refuge from some strong thunderstorms that came through at night.

it'll be a repeat stop, 2012-08-01
Captain: , Deltaville Va (531)

we spent a week on the river, stop here for a night and twice for gas can't think of a bad thing to say... and the owner is a Hoot ;)

Stopped again this yr for gas and was met with the same good cheer and great price....Some other place's should come here and see how it's done !....

If I lived nearby, I would want to keep my boat here., 2012-07-19
Captain: , Lake Norman, NC (191)

While I have been to much newer and more elegant facilities, I have never been to a marina with as friendly and welcoming of an atmosphere. It is contagious. The family that owns and operates it could not be more accommodating. All of the slip holders that I met were pleasant, helpful, respectful, and just there to have a nice time. There were plenty of %u201Crag-haulers%u201D and %u201Cstink-potters%u201D, but not even a hint of the divisiveness that often creeps into conversation about the other persuasion. There is a fully equipped, if not the most modern, kitchen and eating facilities, available for all to use. Just clean up after yourself. And amazingly, everyone does! Ice is sold from the typical merchandiser freezer, but there are no padlocks - ever, and a box on the piling for depositing your payment using the honor system. Bicycles, water toys, carts, shower rooms, pool, etc. are unlocked and available for all to use. They told me they don%u2019t believe in contracts, just pay your rent, and be respectful, and you will have your slip. I trailered my 27%u2019 cruiser there, launched on their new ramps, spent the night, left for a week, and returned for a night and hauled out the next day. They would not accept payment until I was ready to leave for home. And the bill was less than they quoted. They are the best!

Great Place to do nothing!, 2012-07-01
Captain: , Topsail Beach, NC (480)

If it had floating docks I would give it 5 stars. You are in the middle of nowhere, but numerous courtesy cars enable you to get to many fine restaurants, grocery, dollar store, etc. Also, Stratford Hall, birthplace of Robert E. Lee is within courtesy car distance. Many creeks to explore with your dinghy. Good laundry machines (just went up to $2.00). Daily gathering at the liar's corner is always fun. Good selection of books for exchange. No TV at all, but fair internet service. Great monthly rates. Well up a creek off the Yeocomico, off the Potomac, so seems like a safe hurricane hole. Very quiet, peaceful, nice. Marinawide cookouts/covered dishes are frequent and fabulous.

An Oasis of Hospitality, 2012-06-28
Captain: , Cincinnati, Oh. (140)

"An Oasis of Hospitality" is the description for this wonderful marina off the civilized track of high rises buildings and acres of concrete parking lots. This wonderfull marina, rustic in nature, is snuggled into some of the most picturest settings available. We stopped in for a day, a week, than a month. It is located on the lower west shore of the Yeocomiico /Potomac River offering a great hopping off spot to explorer the lower Chesapeake Bay and Potomac region. The bay can be kicking up with white caps but Olversons will have calm waters.
They offer clean, well maintained showers, restrooms as well as handicapped facilities. Open 24 hours without a key and are well lit
The swimming pool is actually heated and overlooks the marina. Including a shaded area with tables and chairs.
Courtesy cars are available for use day or night. We found Luna Restaurant, 17390 Richmond Rd great on Wednesday nights for their special Italian dinners. $30.00 includes two dinners from a selection of 12 items including a bottle of your wine choice. If you enjoy beef, than a gigantic slice (to be shared) of medium rare prime rib is offered at Good Eats, 12720 Cople Hwy. Across the street from the Backdraft Restaurant offering good hamburgers. In town across the street from Callao Supermarket is another good lunch Italian restaurant. Allison Ace Hardware at 3010 N Northumberlan has a large selection of fasteners, including hardware and boating items. Fresh fruit stands are along this highway as well.
On a rainy day I grilled upon their gas grills under a very large covered picnic area adjacent to the air conditioned lending library, Captains room, and additional showers/restrooms.
Laundry facilities are located next to the famous "Liars Corner" welcoming center which normally is underway around 6:00pm
Free Wi-Fi is available at most slips.
Pump out and Fuel is available next to the boat launching ramp.
Pets are welcome at the marina. They have a large dog walking area across from the childrens playground.
A New Brokerage Board has been posted near the office offering a current listing of used boats for sale.
Olversons also offers covered secured storage for your RV or auto at very reasonable monthly rates.
When you dock at Olversons you will see Mann in the early mornings walking the docks inspecting the facilities, lines, boats. In the evenings both John and Page make their exercise walk along the docks as well. The walkways are covered; electricity and water are overhead for spring high tides . Water faucets are waste high for ease of connection.
The friendly crew of Freddie, Cas, Olverson, Steve, Jodi and Lynn will endeavor to ensure your stay will be as pleasant and hospitable as possible. I really don't think Freddie Olverson hasn't met a person he didn't like, except perhaps the tax collector. It's a great place if you want to get away from the hum drum of city life.

This marina is old, but well maintained. Fred, the owner is very helpful. They have many showers and restrooms, two loaner cars, gas and diesel, and a nice boaters lounge. They have a discount for MTOA. Fixed docks in good repair, overlooking a scenic cove.

Friendliest marina around, 2012-05-30

This a basic marina with the nicest people you will ever meet. Clean bathrooms and showers. We stayed here a week and even though it's out in the country we were never bored. There are loaner cars from the marina and competent mechanics in the area. If I want a rest this is my stop.

Nice stay at Olverson's, 2011-10-13
Captain: , Branford, CT (1003)

Don't expect fancy new floating docks, you won't find them. You will find the friendliest folks around. We spent 6 nights and loved it. Courtesy cars, local knowledge and anything else they could do to make your stay enjoyable. Don't forget to bring your favorite drink to Liar's Corner at 5:30 for happy hour with staff (Freddy!) and other boaters. We'll stop again.

Tired of glitz and gloss?. Looking for a down home marina?. Olversons could be your answer!., 2011-09-04
Captain: , Charleston SC (805)

This family owned and managed marina, with extensive shoreside facilities, nestles snugly into the banks of well protected and attractive Lodge Creek.
Facilities include: swimming pool, club house with showers and full kitchen, barbecue area, laundry and the most available mini fleet of couresy cars we have yet experienced. Olversons is also home to two yacht clubs, MTOA home base and Lodge Creek YC.
This family style marina is not about facilities, which although more than adequate, it is the people that have boughty us back on repeat visits.
Mine Host is Fred Olverson, who in addition to being an active cruiser himself aboard M/V Freddie Bear is a fund of knowledge about boats, Virginia and life itself. Fred goes to extreme lenghths to have his guests feel at home and holds open court at Liars Corner each evenning at six where on a regular basis the world is put back on its axis. Fred is ably assisted in day to day operations. by his son in law Stephen Trice
This is a very active community, with many long time residents and families, who spend quality time at Olversons to relax and enjoy the boating life style both dockside and afloat. Although a close knit community the marina residents welcome those of us in transit.

It's just the best..., 2011-08-31
Captain: , MV Red Head (61833)

Update after Hurricane Irene (8/2011):
We stayed on the docks for the hurricane. The marina is well situated with hills to the north right at the water providing good wind protection. We didn't see any more than 33 knots of wind (50+ knots were common in more exposed areas).

Storm surge was the major concern I had. Water rose 2' over the docks. We would have been in trouble if the water rose another 18 inches. It quickly receded but I was concerned.

Another concern is that only 25% of the boats here were prepared for the storm. I know this is typical but it was shocking to me. Marina staff was excellent in providing extra lines and checking the docks. I helped a couple of others tie up other boats that weren't ready at all with owners who never showed up. Strange.

Power was out for 3 days. That's hard for us Mainers who aren't used to 80+ degree temperatures.

I think Olverson's is a good place to weather any storm because of protection. But if there's another hurricane, I think I'll anchor away especially if there's a large possible storm surge.

Original review:
This is one of those times when I really don't want to write a review. My fear is that it'll only cause other transients to come into the marina and there won't be space for me in the future. That said, I ultimately have say what I think for real...

Olverson's is such a great place for a transient. If you're looking for a resort type of marina, Olverson's isn't your place. It's the place to recharge, regroup, and spend some time. I haven't ever experienced a friendlier marina anywhere. Freddie, Cas, Steve, Jodi, Mann, and Lynn do all they can to make your stay enjoyable.

We had such a good experience last Fall that we kept our boat at Olverson's for 4 months over the Summer. Most of the time we drove back to Maine and left the boat closed up. Mann checked everything out daily and went into the boat once a week to verify the charging circuits. A light was left on in our pilothouse to show that the AC power was on. A month after we left, they noticed that the light was out so they went in to check only to find that the lightbulb had burned out. Most marinas would have stopped checking. Instead, Steve bought a new bulb and they kept monitoring the light. Every day.

So here's the thing - check out and enjoy Olverson's. But when we want to come back, slip B-39 is ours.

Wonderful People here!!, 2011-06-12
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (1090)

This is a is a genuine old southern marina with about the greatest folks you will find anywhere. The local residents and the marina owners really went out of their way to make us feel welcome here.

The docks could use some sprucing up, the restrooms were clean and adequate, and it is a few miles up the Yeocomico River, but the people here make it a 10 star stop.

Freddie and Cas Olverson are incredible hosts and all the people at the marina were just wonderful. We were invited to aToga Party that was sponsored by the folks on C dock at the Lodge Creek Yacht Club. Great chicken and fish dinner with super deserts, beer, wine, and entertainment.

Thanks everyone!!!

Outstanding!, 2010-10-21
Captain: , Port Canaveral, Fl. (241)

Olversons Lodge Creek Marina is an outstanding marina. If I lived in the mid Atlantic area this is where I would keep my boat.

The friendly and welcoming nature of the marina starts at the top with the owners, and spreads out to every member of the staff. Fred Olverson is a trawler owner, and a frequent cruiser back and forth to FL. It's clear that he understands the needs of transient boaters.

I have seen them go out of their way to assist transient boaters.

The facilities are clean and well maintained. There is evidence of new piers and decking throughout the marina. The courtesy vehicles are clean and in good shape.

There are several good restaurants and grocery stores within a short drive. The local Ace hardware is well stocked.

Without a doubt this is our favorite marina on the east coast, Chesapeake, and the AICW.

Highly recommended!

Just touring the area and needed a place to dock for one night. Olverson's was perfect -- very friendly and accommodating owners staff, and other boaters. Fun, casual atmosphere. Use of courtesy car was perfect for trip into town for a great dinner at the Tavern. Will definitely stop back in next time we're in the area.

2 years ago I spent about 3 months at Freddie Olverson's marina, doing some boatwork and trying to decide where to go next. Good protection from weather, although the weather systems often come down the VA side of the Potomac. Across the Potomac to the concert series at St Mary's College was a good break. Prices were pretty good, but the electricity and live-aboard fees brought the total up closer to being inline with other marinas.

Olverson's is one of our very favorites!, 2010-08-08

Cas and Freddie are an incredible couple who share in the love of cruising. They are so accommodating and go out of their way to make sure the time spent here is comfortable. Just a great bunch of people--staff, live-aboards, transients, neighbors...we look forward to our time spent at Olverson's.

The Friendly Marina, 2010-06-02

Family-run marina which openly welcomes transients. Great hospitality from the dock crew and the resident boaters. Laid back lifestyle of the VA-Northern Neck draws you kick back andstay a while!

partial to olverson's as we slip there for the last several years. laid back, comfortable all around, people are great, facilities simple yet clean. Clsoe to Krentz and Lewisetta for haulouts, several contractors available for most repairs.

The marina is out of the 50s, tin roofs and exposed wiring. Very protected and reasonable. Be sure to review all prices with Steve or Freddie before deciding on long term arrangements. Boat US discount only good for short term stays. The weekends are very busy and the crowd is very frienldy. The fishing in the area is excellent.

I screwed up and we had a long run across the Chessie on a windy, rough day. We didn't get near Olversons until about 8:00 which is well after dark and closing time. Fred stayed on the phone and radio with me to guide me in. Plus he knew I was exhausted due to 13 hours on the water and had dogs with crossed legs looking for grass so he had a group of people out to help us tie up at about 9:00 at night. As I was on the radio with Fred my Newfoundland was barking for relief. Absolutely incredible customer care, you can't beat that. All this and since I am an MTOA member my stay was free and he knew this.
Docks are in fine condition and main docks are covered.
Huge area for the dog walk.
If I was in the area again I would absolutely stay here again. I would make this my home port.

Great Expectations, 2009-06-30
Captain: , Holland, MI (116)

Very friendly place, reasonable at $1.50/ft with 25% disc for BoatUS and a free night for MTOA members. Courtesy car, $10 for 3 hours. A little run down but well protected. Not much to do but the other boaters are quite friendly. I'd stop here again

Freddie is having some problems. Most of the staff has recently quit. He needs to renovate, but must want to retire, so he raises prices with no increase in services. It used to have the cheapest fuel around, but no more. The place is in real need pf updates and repairs. There are lots of unpublished rules for long term slip holders. You only find out about them when a bill arrives. His transient prices have really inceased, but the place remains full, so maybe I am too harsh.

The slip holders are great and the yacht club parties are mind blowing. It is very protected, so if you need a place to hole up for a while, this will do. However, there are much better locations available.

Olverson's Lodge Creek Marina, 2008-07-10
Captain: , Pasadena, MD (1496)

First time visit. 1 free night for MTOA members annually. Liveaboards. Heated Pool. Captain's lounge. Free courtesy car(s). Remote out-of-town location. Extremely friendly and helpful people! Transient slip rental is $1.50 and includes electric. BoatUS discount on slips is 25%. Fuel dock access is via fairway between "A" Dock and "B" Dock, can be challenging in windy conditions for single engine boats. No hesitation in recommending this marina to others!

Olversons Lodge Creek Marina, 2007-02-26

This is a great place. NOT fancy but nice people who will help you. 5 count them 5 courtesy cars.
Covered and uncovered slips, ice free. The marina will put in bubblers if needed.

Freddy's place should be bronzed! The very epitome of the friendly marina. If you can't find it there, they will lend you a car to go get it or sometimes drive you themselves! The marina is open year round, gives Boat/US discounts. Freddy is a long time member of MTOA and trawlers frequently rendevous at his place. Scenery is awesome and the food outstanding. Loaner cars to get where you need are readily available and in every other way, this place goes out of its way to make sure that you get everything you need. Full service and the cheapest diesel around! I cannot recommend this marina highly enough.
