Reviews for Ocean Marine Yacht Center
A Most Pleasant Experience, 2016-12-15
Captain: , Alexandria, VA (30)

Not often said of a yard but OMYC is the true exception. Heating went out the day before the anticipated coldest day of the year so far. Called OMYC at 5pm and they assured us Bill would be at the boat at 8:30AM. Bill arrived a couple of minutes early, immediately set to work removing the old manifold and left within thirty minutes with the promise "I'll be back." He returned just after 1 PM with a newly fashioned, custom built replacement and installed it in under an hour. The price was half what I expected. The whole experience from Ann in Billing to Bill behind the wrench was a delightful Christmas surprise. Great people and quality work.

Quality marina, 2016-10-23
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (490)

Stayed here for a night in mid-October and, once again, we can't say enough about it. Docks were nice and the area okay. Great complimentary shuttle service with Greg driving us to Food Lion.

Great for Repairs, 2016-07-21
Captain: , Rockport, ON, Canada (265)

This is not the same as the marina any longer. There is a separate flag for the marina. The owner sold his marina interest but retained the repair yard.

Great Stay, 2016-06-21
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (134)

I run my boat up and down the east coast on a regular basis. I very often stay at this marina. It has proven to be consistantly good with a great staff and clean ammenities. My only complaint is with the new fuel pumps. They are extreemly slow and are not adjustable in terms of gallons per hour flow rate. Perhaps this si something they might be able to fix since fueling here takes considerable time. If it werent for this, I woudl have given a five star rating rather than four.

Better Than Norfolk, 2016-06-20
Captain: , Jamestown, RI (80)

We stayed two nights and really liked this marina. It has a friendly staff and all the amenities. We did not need repairs, just dockage.
We were also pleasantly surpired with Portsmouth.. We hads two outstanding meals in nearby restaurants, one in Still, a basement place with a menu that can best be described as American tapas, and another in Cafe Europa, the kind of charming old world bistro that is hard to find these days. I highly recommend both of these restaurants.

Friendly and great location, 2016-05-30
Captain: , Bristol (306)

Very well located near the centre of Portsmouth and ferry to Norfolk. Great staff and marina has all the usual facilities. Portsmouth has two free town docks (no water or power) but Ocean Marine is well protected and maintained at start (or finish) of the ICW. Don't miss a visit to the Commodore cinema on High Street - fantastic atmosphere and watch the film with food and drink on a table in front of you.

Great Location, 2016-05-27
Captain: , Racine Wisconsin (161)

Located five minutes from the ferry that takes you across to Norfork. You're also five minutes from old town Portsmouth which is the restaurant district. Much prefer this location to spots across the river where they are demolishing the buildings in front of the marina. The ferry is 1.75 exact change only.

Well Protected Marina, 2015-10-04
Captain: , Hull, MA (720)

We had to extend our stay by 5 days due to weather and Hurricane Joaquin. Over the last 5 days we have experienced NE/ENE /E winds blowing 20-30 with gusts to 40 and I am glaad we choose this marina. The marina has floating docks that are in excellent condition and we had plenty of room on the pilings even though we had exceptionally high tides. The waters inside the marina were very calm.
The marina is also conveniently located to the Old Town District were you will find great restaurants and a variety of shops. For restuarants if you want Italian go to Mannino's, for pizza try Home Grown, for breakast go to The Coffee Shoppe and if you like German food go to the Beit Garden.
There is also a ferry that will take you to the Norfolk side. We tried it but we could not get off because the dock was flodded out.
So the big positives are the docks, weather protection and location. Other than that, the staff are very nice people but don't have alot of information to offer, the restrooms are OK but could stand a good cleaning, the ship store is very limited -- we went over to Tidewater Marina their ships store is well stocked.

Should be a LAST CHOICE for repairs!, 2015-08-10
Captain: , Ocala FL (607)

Marina staff was very good and the services provided were adequate.
As for the "yacht center" service, well...
I broke an antenna off in the Dismal swamp and needed to repair/replace it. I called on a Friday and they said they'd "work me in " on Monday if I came over. I came over first thing (0800), docked and immediately talked to the service department, same guy as on Friday who did not remember me at all. He said someone would come over shortly. At noon, no one had shown up. I walked over (nearly 1/2 mile from docks to shop) and no one was able to assist me till after lunch. Finally around 1330, someone came to the boat. We had to spend the night (for a fee of course) and the next day they came and replaced the antenna. They did not run the wire all the way to the radio, but spliced it in. They did not run a VSWR meter check after their installation either. Had they done so, I would not have had to make a second stop a week later at another shop where it was discovered that not only was the splice bad, but the antenna was bad "out of the box" and the cable they had spliced in to was also bad!
It took the techniocian 30 minutes to walk form the shop to the boat and back. They tried to bill me for that time - and he made 3 or 4 trips!
I also needed winch work, but with that poor service, I opted to defer it to later. I'm glad I did too!

Friendly folks, 2015-08-06
Captain: , Beaumont, TX (669)

Previous reviews are accurate. The liveaboards are very friendly with offers to use their car if we needed to go anywhere. Park was handy for the dogs. Agree S L OW fuel pumps . 10 c/gal discount for boat us membership. $1.75/ft dock with $5.00 for 50 amp.

Picked up our new to us boat, 2015-07-30
Captain: , Holden Beach, NC (60)

We picked up our new to us boat on July 10th. The boat had been stored inside in the racks. When we arrived the boat had been placed on the trailer for transport and was secured behind a fence. The staff was friendly and helpful as we prepped the trailer (repaired inoperative lights and propely inflated the tires) and boat for the trip to Holden Beach. Not a lot of experience with OMYC but seemed like a nice place.

OMYC review, 2015-07-11
Captain: , Sarasota, Ft. Lauderdale (643)

Nice place with nice people. Easy walk into town. Nice park very near by for walking dogs.

If you get a chance go to "Stove" restaurant. Great food, great cocktails and very interesting decor. 10 - 15 minute cab ride away from marina but well worth it.

Best Service in Norfolk/Chesapeake Area, 2015-06-29
Captain: , florida (60)

We have traveled the ICW numerous times and are Gold Loopers. This has given us the "opportunity" to visit many yards for repairs, some in the Norfolk/Chesapeake area. We recently had a problem as did the boat travelling with us and we called Ocean Marine for help. They not only made us feel like they dropped everything to help us but they got the wok done right the first time and at a very reasonable rate. The staff was fabulous and the service excellent, we couldn't have asked for anything more. As a US Goast Guard Licensed Captain with over 150,000 NM logged I would go out of my way to use Ocean Marine again. No other yard in the area compares to the knowledge, and level of service they provide.

Great fuel price, very slow pump, 2015-06-22
Captain: , Ft. Collins, CO (331)

We stopped today to top off the tanks. The price was 2.24 including tax which was great. The staff was very curteous and friendly. The pumps were the slowest I have every seen. It took one hour and 15 minutes to pump 185 gallons of fuel. And if you stopped pumping for more than a few minutes the pumps trurned off and the office had to reset them.. Until they get the pumps fixed I will be willing to pay more for fuel that pumps quicker. If you have all day, then this is the place to buy fuel.

Fine Stop for Us, 2015-06-18
Captain: , Petoskey MI (327)

We had the boat at Ocean Marine for nearly two weeks. We were onboard for all but 5 days. It was a great choice for us. Being across from the navy yards was a little noises but worth it for the sights.

The docks are good, the security is adequate. A previous reviewer must have missed the additional and nicer bathrooms/showers on the second floor! The laundry had 3 washers and 3 dryers. Efficient, new and only $1.25.

Their service department did a neat job of changing our oil and fixing a minor problem with one engine. The service person couldn't have been more professional.

We enjoyed walking into Portsmouth for dinners. Not to be missed:
Europa Cafe, Still(tapas), Manninos, Gosport Tavern. If you're looking for a ladies haircut, try Studio CK-an easy walk.

We will stay here again if we return to the area. Tracy, the dock master, is a class act!

Not a First Choice Marina, 2015-06-10
Captain: , New Bern, NC (486)

Stayed here one night. Very noisy from the shipyard. Docks look new but very woobbly at the ends. Any North or South winds can make docking interesting to say the least. Only one shower/bathroom for each gender.
Dock hands need more education.

Great Fuel Price, 2015-05-27
Captain: , Lake St. Clair (177)

Had been to Norfolk - tried Portsmouth, great gasoline price. Near town and restaurants!

good location, 2015-05-25
Captain: , staten island (551)

Ducked in to miss weather and found this place close to the main st in town high st so it was good for resturants ,wifi a little slow ,not the best not the worst ,dock hand ,not the best not the worst,
pretty much sums the place up ,nice enuf ,not the best not the worst

Finally made it!!, 2015-01-20
Captain: , delaware city, DE (80)

Landed a little after sunset in the rain! Broadside dock on ICW between two 90-100ft yachts. Stayed for 2 nights due to foul weather and had Thanksgiving dinner. Cab driver, Helen, was a wonderfully pleasant and helpful woman. On our own at the dock. You had to seek out the assistant at the dock.

Diesel Fuel Tax NOT included, 2014-11-28
Captain: , North Fort Myers, FL (519)

We stopped here for diesel fuel on 11/24/2014 and topped off our fuel tanks taking on 915 gallons of diesel. Per everything we had seen and phone calls to the marina tax was inclusive. We found out this is not the case on diesel fuel. It is subject to VA state sales tax.

We spoke with several people at the marina concerning this and final phone call was with Jim Bento president of the marina. He and his staff were very courteous and customer suppport was important to them. Final determination was we paid sales tax. In apology for the miscommunication from his staff on the "tax included" Mr Bento gave us credit for a free dockage at the marina the next time we travel through Portsmouth.

Concert at N'TELOS, 2014-09-29
Captain: , Newport News, VA (153)

Came here for the Chicago Concert. Should have bought tickets and gone inside. Acoustics not good at the marina. But the marina is only a couple of hundred yard from the entrance to the venue. Walk the show and back to the boat, no parking and no traffic.
Marina is very deep and great floating docks. Facilities are clean and easily accessable except for the keys. They use some type ofmagnetic key that looks likea dog tag. It is hard to make work. Can get noisy with the ship repair yards across the river and all the Navy ships in the.
East walk to down town Portsmouth and the Skipjack Nautical Store. HRT ferry system is a cheap way to get to Norfolk and the landing is a very short walk.

Harborfest, 2014-06-18
Captain: , Herrington Harbour South (328)

Stayed here 2 nights for Harborfest.

Good: $1.25/ft. Staff friendly and helpful (although short-handed at times). Two were present to help us dock. Quick walk to High St. ferry that takes you to Norfolk. Restaurants close by.

Not-so-good: Strangest key system I have ever seen for doors. Stay here and you'll know what I am talking about. Restrooms always seemed to be out of toilet paper (we just brought our own from the boat) but were pretty clean. It's right on the river so current/wind a slight factor.

5th Choice and Overpriced. OK if you're a Russian Billionaire, 2014-06-12
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

October 2013

This review is only for the transient docks and facilities not for the service or storage.
Somewhat disappointing considering the cost. The floating docks are nice. The wifi is useless on the docks, go up to the laundry if you need a signal. Staff a little short and inexperienced. Heads and showers are ok, but i've paid less for better. Hard to work the key in some of the door handles, expecially the laundry. The tall buildings to the north funnel a northerly wind down the docks making for a higher wind. If they are going to remain a real first choice, they better get Karen in for some serious consulting.

Update 5/1/14
A 'first choice' only if you have a mega yacht. Then you don't need the wifi that does not even work well at the main building. Folks were renting cars to go to Starbucks.
Ok for storage.
Not so good for maintenance work if you don't have a paid captain to supervise them. I authorized outdrive work in October. They were checking that the gears worked when I arrived to commission the boat. I found the pitot tube not hooked up, trim limits not calibrated, and a quart of outdrive fluid in the bilge from the reservoir they didn't plug before they pulled the outdrive.
Good fuel prices.
Pull in; Gas up; Get out.

great fuel stop, 2014-05-28
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1522)

We stop here after exiting the ICW in Norfolk. Great staff and prices. Easy in and out.

Good stop in Portsmouth, 2014-05-17
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1997)

Spent three days here on the outside during a cold front blowing through.
I was surprised that given the commercial tugs and tows going up and down the river there was some wake but not too bad.
Staff were very friendly and the washers and dryers were reasonably priced at $1.25 a cycle.
Enterprise rental car is just a short ride away and their staff were also excellent.
Would stop again if in the area.

Convenient and good docks, 2014-01-04
Captain: , Stuart FL (835)

April 2012

We arrived at the Marina to wait a few days before hauling. The winds were Northerly at 25ish. Staff let us go to face dock rather than trying to go up narrow fairway and then turn crossways to wind. Staff very courteous and competent. Plan to have boat hauled and stored for summer. Will advise experience re that latter.

Not What I was Hoping For, 2013-12-16
Captain: , Crockett (610)

We stayed here for about a week with the ARC Caribbean 1500 before heading out to Tortola.

Positive stuff first. . . 1) the docks are in good shape 2) You can walk to town

Rant. . . 1) We were on the face dock where there was constant surge and a lot of noise from the Naval ships be refitted across the river all hours of the day and night. 2) The dock hands where not present to help us dock at our slip or fuel dock even though they confirmed they were ready on the radio. When they did show up they helped themselves to reconfigure our lines in a manner that made me question if they had been around a boat before. 3) The yard did not have anyone that dealt with propane systems 4) The overall competency was very poor.

Portsmouth may be worth a stop though. Neat old theatre that service dinner w/ a movie, a few decent resturants, antique marine store and Mile Marker 0 is a pretty good small chandelry

Ocean Marine Center - Disappointing, 2013-12-11
Captain: , Stuart Fl (300)

October 20, 2013

Even though I made reservation more than a week ahead of our arrival, they had no place for us. We ending uup staying on the fuel dock which was noisy because of the shipyard across the way. They had big boats on the face dock and hardly any room in the fairway for turning. The wind was nasty making dovking difficult. We called on the radio and had to wait in the river while they finished fueling a sailboat. When we went in there was NOBODY on the fuel dock to handle lines. We needed a pump out and 550 gallons of fuel. The fuel pumps are very slow. The dock staff keeps changing - all new people since we wer ther in May. A very disappointing visit this time. They have lost customer focus.

May 12, 2013 Dockstaff changing again. New man still needs training on docking boats. Friendy staff - customer focused. Fueled in the morning and it was a mad house around the fuel dock. They did keep it clear for us. A little confusion on slip assignment due to new personnel. It was easily resolved. Best price for fuel on the whole trip.

October 2012 - Once again, excellent service from the dockstaff - Kyle and Rod. Good fuel price and easy docking on the face dock. A little tight turning in the basin because of big boats on both sides. We do not have thrusters to help turn. Easy walking
distance to many restaurants and Dollar General.
May 2012- Very good fuel price - about the lowest on the trip. Good experience with dock staff. Pump out was performed with many flushes until the fluid extracted was clear.

We were at Ocean Marine Center on 10/18. This was our fifth visit to their facility. As always the staff was courteous, helpful and very efficient. They provided us with a welcome packet conatining information on sites and restaurants in the area including coupons. They are within walking distance of many restaurants and museums. There fuel price is one of the best in the area for diesel.

A Bit Disapointing, 2013-10-22
Captain: , Grand Island, NE (240)

Having stopped in past visits -I was a bit disappointed this time. The marina staff seem inexperienced - they try to be helpful and are friendly.

Always a good practice to check all lines - especially with the dock hand on our arrival.

Good facilities - until I checked the shower; both at arrival (4:30 PM) and in the morning the stall appeared to have served as a large pet grooming station. Decided to stay aboard.

As mentioned by a previous note - it was difficult to contact the marina - watching the two staff (perhaps we are now off-season) they were running the docks and picking up calls when able.

A convenient location for starting the south bridge schedule - FYI, Starboards Coffee has moved a few blocks away from the Ferry Stop so add time for a morning walk.

Good but not great, 2013-10-08
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (1089)

This is certainly a convienent stop, easy access, floating docks and fuel but the bath and restroom faciilties are in need of updating. Decent little ships store and about a 15 min walk into town. The poeple here were very helpful and professional.

Nobody Home, 2013-10-06
Captain: , Branford, CT (1003)

Between 4:30 and 5:30 pm today (a Sunday) we tried to make a transient reservation. We called all three of their land lines several times. We hailed them on ch 16 several times. NOTHING. We had hoped to come in for the night and get 700 gallons of diesel.

We pulled into Tidewater Marina for the night. We'll stop at Top Rack for fuel tomorrow.

Favorite Marina, 2013-07-29
Captain: , Portsmouth, VA (430)

Preparations completed for departure up the Bay to NJ, Long Island, and Martha's Vineyard. Terrific marina and staff with adjoining yard that can meet all your needs. We will be returning here on our way south this fall.

Great people and facility, 2013-07-26
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

Dock Master Jim Landon does a great job of helping you get all that you need in the way of services or information. Their facility is an absolute full service marine campus that can handle all size boats and all issues.

First Class Act, 2013-07-25
Captain: , Abilene, TX (210)

Great facilities and staff. Needed some electric work and was extremely impressed w/ their service, pricey but top notch. Easy access to marina and walkable to Old Portsmouth with plenty of shops and restaurants

Convenient Stop, 2013-07-12
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach (251)

Nice floating docks and good facilities with a helpfiul staff. Good fuel prices. Located within walking distance to Old Town Portsmouth, several restaurants and museums. We will stop here again.

Great lay over, 2013-06-25
Captain: , Houston (774)

Easy access, Great people; very helpful. Easy walk to restaurants. Ferry to Norfolk is a block away.

All you need, 2013-06-22
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1550)

Great stop, easy access, good fuel prices. Neat clean facility, any type of repairs available next door. Good restaurants nearby. River ferry available for trips across to Norfolk.

transient stay - 2 different nights, 2013-06-19
Captain: , Wicomico Church, VA (10)

Excellent fuel prices, good help with docking & nice clean facilities.
Stopped on our way down ICW-VA Cut & on our way back up the Dismal Swamp.

Ocean Marine, 2013-06-06
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (105)

Great location in Portsmouth and a nice stopover for a few days. Floating docks, clean and secure area with friendly staff. Fuel dock is easy access and the price is good too!

Nice marina ? nice staff, 2013-05-31
Captain: , North Carolina (344)

We stayed here for two nights. Floating docks ? everything clean and cared for. Very friendly staff. Have to agree with others that you may want your boat tied a little differently than what they will do. Clean restrooms and showers. Nice area to walk around with a waterfront trail. Would definitely stay here again.

Great Marina, 2013-05-28
Captain: , Houston TX (349)

Spent a couple weeks here taking care of some business and waiting out the weather. Marina is well run; only issue is lack of experience with some of the dock staff. They do not appear to have much boating experience, make sure you give them clear instructions on what you want done with your lines. Otherwise they are very helpful. They brought our packages down to us when they arrived in the office and offered to help in any way they could. While we were there an old trawler sank down the dock from us one night. They had a salvage crew on site by mid morning to secure the vessel and brought in a crane barge to lift the boat and remove it from the marina the next morning. Very professionally done. Will certainly stay here again.

Ocean Marine Center, 2013-05-25
Captain: , San Diego (60)

Good floating docks, very friendly staff, good security. Had some engine work done, and the mechanic (Miguel) was absolutely top notch. We would definitely have work done here again. Very close to town/restaurants/PO. Bike-able to grocery or there is a local, family-owned taxi that will take you and bring you back for a reasonable fee. Old Portsmouth has some excellent restaurants that are worth the stop. We will definitely stay at Ocean Marine again.

Great fuel, 2013-05-13
Captain: , Trenton ON (668)

Cheap fuel, good dock staff. We didn't stay, just fueled up.

Location, location, location!, 2013-05-13
Captain: , Kinsale (130)

We arrived after hours to a friendly welcome and help at the dock and enjoyed our stay here very much. The marina has new floating docks and clean and spacious bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities. It is an easy walk to Olde Towne Portsmouth with its visitors center, museums, beautiful historic homes, shops and restaurants. We especially enjoyed the Commodore movie/dinner theater. Another must-see here is the Mile Marker Zero Marine supply store. The owner, Bob, couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. For $1.50, the ferry, which runs every half hour, will take you to/from waterside Norfolk where you'll find the Nautilus Museum and the awesome battleship Wisconsin. Although the marina no longer offers the Boat UD discount and no courtesy car was available for provisioning, it was worth the price!

Haul out & prop change, 2013-05-11
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

76' Motor Yacht got lifted on 5-6-13 for prop change and other minor hull maintenance. Back in water mid day 5-7-13. Staff was terrific and very competent, all work completed in a professional manor. No sleeping on boat when out of water. Would recommend and will use again.

Spent 5 days here for weather, 2013-05-11
Captain: , Athens, AL (641)

Nice place to be stuck, wind was howling for several days. Two dockhands were waiting for us when we arrived. My wife loved the 3 washers and dryers - frequently there is only one with a waiting line and we had lots to catch up. She also liked their book exchange. Easy walk to town, the ferry to Norfolk, etc. But it is not convenient to any groceries, closest is 1 1/2 miles away. Very clean and secure marina. After several days and a E/NE wind, our boat was pretty dirty, I presume from the maintenance across the river on the military ships.

Fuel Dock experience, 2013-04-23
Captain: , Where ever the hook is (573)

I stopped for fuel here and the price is great, the dockhands however were absent even though I called ahead, then while I was attempting to dock with 15 to 20 pushing me off the dock, I called for a dockhand. They sent someone down and he wouldn't take the spring line from my wife, he said we should use a bow line. Beware, there dockhands are clueless.

Excellent facility with great service, 2013-04-07
Captain: , Oriental, NC (50)

We came in after closing, but Rod had our welcome packet waiting for us on the fuel dock, where we overnighted. The entrance and floating docks make this a very easy end-of-day experience. Some of the local restaurants will deliver to the marina, for those whose legs are spent. Dockmaster Jim was friendly and informative, facilities are in excellent and clean condition. We will return.

Great Stop, 2013-04-07
Captain: , Branford, Ct (30)

Had to leave our baot for a few days, last minute. Spoke with Rod, could not have been more accomodating. Rod had car reserved and standing by for us prior to hitting the dock. Excellent, friendly staff all around. Price for floating docks minutes away from historic Portsmout is very reasonable.

Easy resupply and excellent marine store "Mile Marker 0 (zero). Hard to find parts found easily and quickly. Say hi to Harley (lab)and also a pet friendly store for those of you traveling with pets.

Would be an easy place to spend more time than we had.

Awesome Service, 2013-04-04
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (10)

I arrived at Ocean Marine on 31 March 2013 in preparation for a haul out at their yard the next morning. When I arrived Rod was at the dock to help me tie up and was very helpful. He didn't do the typical get a couple lines secure and leave routine but without any prompting very proffesionaly secured my spring lines. He also didn't just show us where to plug in shore power but plugged us in. He also made sure we knew that there was a pot of coffee at the marina office. The next day I met Jim the dockmaster and he was equally helpful and friendly. In fact the entire staff was very customer service oriented and helpful. I highly recommend Ocean Marine for your long or short term docking needs. Almost forgot, the facilities are clean, modern, and secure. I'd say the omly downside is that in the summer time there is no pool.

A Great "Pit-stop", 2013-03-31
Captain: , Portland (140)

We didn't stay overnight here. For us, this place was almost like a "race car pit-stop"; we needed diesel fuel, water, and a pump-out. Easy "in and out" at the end of a T-dock right off the ICW; one of the best fuel prices around; "service with a smile" Rod is one of the most helpful and pleasant fuel dock fellows we've ever met.

Excellent port in a storm, 2013-03-31
Captain: , Lewes, DE (514)

On a recent trip up the ICW it became obvious that we would need to temporarily end our trip in the Norfolk area. After reading the reviews and seeing Ocean Marine was an AC sponsor I called and got a slip reservation. We got there in driving rain (that later turned to snow) and Rod was on the fuel dock waiting for us as we pulled in to top off and get pumped out. He had arranged for a cab to take us to a rental car since it was late on Sunday and couldn't have a car there. During the week I needed some work done and they got it done in time for us to leave the following weekend.Everyone I worked with at OMYC was friendly, courteous and attentive. We will stay there again and recommend it to anyone. As noted elsewhere it is an easy walk to restaurants and attractions.

Easy overnight, 2013-02-17

Staff here was top notch. Stayed on the floating dock on the river so it was a bit open to wake..but it was only for the night. Clean facilities and short walk on the waterfront sidewalk to some nice downtown restaraunts.

These people are wonderful : ), 2012-11-18
Captain: , Miami Beach (630)

We were towed into Ocean Marine on 10/12 and wound up staying until 10/26/12. They were very sensitive to our situation and helped us with the repairs that we needed and made sure we could stay on our boat the whole time. Ann and Steve and JJ over at the yard were saints and went above and beyond to help. Rod gave us the best pump out help and water flush that we have had and taught us how to do that in the future. Would go back and recommend in a heart beat.

great marina in a great location, 2012-11-11
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

floating docks in excellent condition, ample spaces, steady power, clean bathrooms, a friendly staff, a small store and rigt next to a nicely renovated downtown area with great restaurants (Stiill is fabulous), even a huge fresnel lens on your walk to town. what more do you need?

Great service at a great price., 2012-11-10
Captain: , West Palm Beach (90)

Kyle on the fuel dock was extremely helpful and very friendly. He walked over to the service end of the marina and found half a dozen Racor filters for me and provided good directions on how to locate and enter the marina. Will definitely fuel here again.

Great stay during Sandy, 2012-11-01
Captain: , Charleston, SC (20)

Rod and the rest of the great staff at Ocean Marine took great care of us as we waited out Sandy. This is my third time stopping on my way up/down the ICW and Rod has always taken great care of us!!!

Rod for President!, 2012-10-27
Captain: , Halifax, N.S (20)

Wow....outstanding service. Rod the dockmaster took great care of us and we only stopped in for fuel, water and a much needed pump out! Rod was the most attentive to getting us sorted out and provided the most detailed pump out and fresh water flush our holding tank has even received. He also has quite the repertoire of fast one liners to keep you smiling. We will stay here when we come by again....made our day!

Ocean Marine Yacht Ctr, 2012-10-19
Captain: , Cambridge, MD (170)

10/17/12 Decided to stay at this marina after reading an Active Captain review by our Friend Norm Mayer. We are glad we did. Rod lived up to his reivews and was very helpful with our fuel and pumpout needs. This is a great stop, but a little noisy with lots of boating activity across the waterway at the many ship yards.

Really nice marina, 2012-10-18
Captain: , N Fort Myers, Florida (516)

We got in yesterday and there was someone to take our lines and get tied up, even flemishing the lines for us. Rod did everything in his power to get us settled, and gave us literature and information of the area. He is well versed in active captain and was really distressed that he received one bad review. I pointed out that when people see all the positive reviews and one negative review, they would take it with a grain of salt. Let's face it: you can't please everyone all the time, and some people can have very unrealistic expectations.
We will be staying here a month, and will report more toward the end of our stay.
Well, today is the end of the month stay for us. I am just as impressed today as I was the day we arrived. This is a first class operation, and Rod is outstanding. He is more or less the dock master, although he doesn't have that title. If we return to this area this will definitely be on our agenda.

Great stop, 2012-10-10
Captain: , Mystic, CT (211)

Have stayed here before and will go back again. Rod was very helpfull and went out his way to make our stay relaxing and enjoyable.

Very Nice Stop, 2012-10-02

Stayed for two days on our way to North Carolina from Long Island, N.Y. Easy access and friendly staff, clean restrooms and short ride to town.

Good mechanics and service, 2012-09-26
Captain: , Fort Pierce, Florida (369)

Had a fuel problem develop on our run south and were stuck at Cheasapeake Yachts. Ann was extremely helpful and was able to have a mechanic stop by on his way home. JJ was great and fixed the fuel problem is less than an hour and the rate was very reaonable. If anyone needs a diesel mechanic, they are the ones to call.

Great Marina, 2012-09-26
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (1145)

This is a wonderful marina - clean heads, great floating docks. And the folks here are wonderful - and very dog friendly.

Great Marina - Exceptional Staff, 2012-08-30
Captain: , Ft Lauderdale FL (20)

The Marina at Ocean Marine Yachting Center is in a very good location, easy to get to as it is right on the ICW. It is close to town where there are lots of nice restaurants, especially the movie theatre where you can get a sandwich and a pitcher of beer while watching a movie in comfortable seats.
The floating docks are well maintained and the power is consistently reliable. The access to the boat yard, service and parts departments next door is a definite convenience. The local Hertz Rental Car will even deliver and pick up a rental car.
But what makes the marina exceptional is the staff. They all display the warmth of true southern hospitality, and went out of their way to assist us while we were there for an extended period of time. Their friendly dispositions, helpfulness and attention to detail make this a marina that we will continue to use and highly recommend to other boaters.

Great location, helpful staff, 2012-06-12
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Great location to visit Portsmouth / Norfolk. Staff very helpful at fuel dock and getting tied up. Took care of engine oil disposal. Restrooms/showers OK, but could use thorough cleaning (but it was a very very busy time with Harborfest.) Short walk to Norfolk ferry $1.50 each way $0.75 senior rate. Very close to historic downtown Portsmouth. Marina next to Telos Wireless Pavillion.

Nice marina, 2012-05-28
Captain: , Georgia (65)

Stopped in with engine troubled on a holiday weekend and the staff was more than happy to do everything possible to help. Very clean. Friendly fellow boaters. Dock A gets a little rocky at times but all in all a very good marina.

Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1643)

The docks are floating concrete, very stable. The dock hands were very helpful. Nice ships store. Close to town, clean rest rooms. We stayed only one day.

Excellent Fuel stopover, 2012-05-09
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (639)

We came in for fuel and pump out. Excellent access to floating dock. Dock staff was very experienced and professional. Would stop again.

Diesel fuel was out of commission when we stopped first week of April, 2012-04-10

Might want to call before making a fuel stop here to see if they have fixed the problem with their diesel pumps. No signs posted.

Great Marina near downtown Portsmouth, 2012-04-06
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (329)

This is a good location to stop when going both north and south. The marina is very close to the downtown shops and restaurants. The bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities were very nice and clean. This visit we took the ferry across the ICW to Norfolk and went to the Navy Museum. Make sure that you go to the Commodore Theater in downtown Portsmouth if you stop; it%u2019s a short walk from the dock. It%u2019s an old-fashioned movie theater that runs first-run movies while you can have lunch or dinner sitting at a table with comfortable chairs.

Mixed feelings about this one, 2012-04-05
Captain: , Hamilton, Ontario (42)

This is a beautifully clean boat yard with exceptionally friendly staff. Rod, at the dock, was very helpful and he went out of his way to make our stay comfortable. Ann, in service, helped find us and our dog accommodation while our boat was being fixed. She even drove there. Steve, the service manager, was professional and upfront about costs and timing. However, while much of the work was done to a high standard, the engine mechanic failed to assemble the shaft coupliing correctly which caused us to lose steering at a bridge and significant damage to our boat on the pilings. Consequently, we had to get repairs and were held up for a further month. The good news is Ocean Marine did acknowledge responsibility and worked with our insurance company.

On the hard - first class work done on time and to standard, 2012-04-03
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (154)

A special thanks to Ann in the servce-writer's dept, Steve the foreman, and Bill the master electrician for the great work on our boat. Bottom prep and paint looked great, and prop/shaft polishing and prop-speed application really made a difference. Always a pleasure to work with the Ocean Marine team. First Class - the only way they operate. Thanks!

Great place !!, 2012-03-26
Captain: , Little Heaven (40)

Going back north and barely able to make all the bridges, thanks to a fool of a tug boat driver blocking up the ICW, and trying to get to a marina to get fuel before they closed. Called Tidewater Marina first, no help, but Ocean Marine offered to stay open after hours to help out !!! Awesome people, super friendly and cheaper fuel than Tidewater to boot !!! Will be going back again!

Great people make great marinas, 2011-12-08
Captain: , Harveys Lake, PA (100)

Stopped here after taking a beating down the bay. Headin for ICW and new at all this. Called staff and they basically said, don't sweat anything and we will help you on the fuel dock. Very friendly staff and when I had a critical form needing to be sent, ROD had it printed, in my hand, no charge in seconds. I couldn't get my own staff to work that well. Clean facilities, protected from public, and an overall great stop. Try to spend a day and take the ferry to Norfolk. Well worth the time.

Reliable stop, 2011-12-03
Captain: , Solomons, MD (464)

Great stop as noted by all other reviews. Prices as of 12-2-2011 were $1.75/ft and $3.38 for diesel.

Marina stay 11/3/11 to 11/7/11, 2011-11-14
Captain: , Annapolis (30)

Spent four nights at Ocean Marine awaiting friend's boat arrival and weather improvement. Very helpful staff and spotless bathrooms and showers. Floating docks very nice. This is a first class marina. I highly recommend it.

It's also great that it is within easy walking distance of the historic section of old town Portsmouth.

It's all true. Jim n I. November 4, 2011, 2011-11-04
Captain: , Reedville, VA (689)

We sat out a frontal passage (35kn) for two days. Staff exceptional, from docking assistance to helpful suggestions. The town provided all that was needed. All within easy walking distance. The Dollar store has a good selection of food items, Mile Marker "0" and the marina have what ever boat supplies you need. Portsmouth itself, provides a wide range of dining options and a movie theater.

Friendly Staff, Great Docks, 2011-10-25
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

Pulled in for fuel and to stay the night. We were greeted by Rod's (with a 'd') big smile and skillful dock assistance at the fuel dock. It is so rare to find dockhands who know what they're doing. Dave helped us tie up to our final spot for the night and was great as well. Everyone here is friendly and helpful. The docks are wonderful. It's close to downtown Portsmouth which we love. And they are very dog friendly - Dyna and Dylan give them 5 paws.

Outstanding Service, 2011-10-17
Captain: , Durango, CO (210)

Have stayed here a couple of times and each time noted the excellant service at the marina (Rob and Collin among others). Not a country club, but safe and clean, with restaurants a few blocks away. Decided to have boat hauled out for bottom paint and detail job. Followed up with some electrical and engine work. Everything was done effeciently, effectively and at a reasonable price.

Great Marina and Service, 2011-10-12

Outstanding fuel stop, 2011-09-30
Captain: , Portland, OR (120)

I only stopped for fuel. The attendant was outstanding. I've never seen such service at a fuel dock. Even provided us with free coffee (we didn't ask).

The facility looked shipshape.

Great marina, 2011-09-29
Captain: , Hampton,VA (22)

Stopped here to fuel up and the service was outstanding. Rod helped with lines and went above and beyond the call of duty, never once losing his smile, in spite of my slightly unruly and over excited dog. The facility is well maintained. Wish I had a boat big enough to keep here.

Above and beyond, 2011-09-20
Captain: , Charleston, SC (364)

Just before hurricane Irene was scheduled to hit Norfolk I was on trip to Alaska and had left my boat at Waterside Marina in Norfolk. Initially I was told that there were no haul out facilities or captains available in the Norfolk area. However, Ocean Marine keep trying and found a Captain to move boat and hauled it out and stored until my return from Alaska at a very reasonable price. Outstanding service.

Very professional staff, great facility, 2011-09-02
Captain: , Nashville,TN (437)

Stopped here one night while running from Hurricane Irene. Staff was very accomodating, facility very well kept.

A great stopping point, 2011-08-13
Captain: , Millsboro, DE (71)

We make Ocean Marine Center a stoppping point on our trip North and South. Great place to stop, clean and friendly!

Noisy but nice, 2011-08-01
Captain: , Germantown, TN (181)

Clean restrooms and laundry room. Convienient to Portsmouth by foot and Norfolk via ferry. Also easy in and out of ICW. The staff is great. But the shipyard is VERY VERY noisy - riviting, banging, honking and announcements over the loud speakers.

Ocean Marine, 2011-07-18
Captain: , Palmetto Fl (545)

Stayed here after leaving ferry landing due to high tides. Great dock hands. They put us in a slip with a floating dock on both sides right up by the office. Super convienent for laundry and showers. Not a very far walk to downtown but grocery is too far on foot. Stayed here again on the way back and everything was great with almost the same slip, still convenient to the laundry and the grass for walking the dog. Great staff.

Lost bicycle from dock, 2011-07-10
Captain: , sabula iowa (21)

The dock help are first class. Not only help with tie ups and hooking power and water, but my brioher knocked his bike into 30 foot water and the dock help made up a grapple and brought the bike up.

Great facilites, people and service, 2011-06-27
Captain: , Richmond, VA (10)

We limped into the marina with a broken engine and received excellent service, particualry from Merissa and Rod. I would certainly use the marina again, allthough I hope not in the same circumstances.

Great fuel stop, 2011-06-07
Captain: , Bristol, RI (938)

Best prices based on a few phone calls. Service was very good. Couldn't ask for more.

Bring your bikes, 2011-05-31
Captain: , York River Yacht Basin (30)

The marina was clean, modern and the staff very helpful. It appears to be a weekend destination marina for locals. The real attraction is the revitalized Portsmouth shopping and restraurant area which is about 5 or 6 blocks walking (easy bike ride). Has an urban setting feel to it.

Our First Choice, 2011-05-31
Captain: , Northeast,MD. (10)

Of the three marinas we've stayed at in this immediate area, this is by far the best. As Rod and Dave helped us into the slip, they made us feel completely welcome and comfortable. Clean restrooms and showers, very nice laundry room. We stayed just long enough that we ended up paying for the month as it was the better value. Although we only expected to stay a bit more than two weeks, we kept delaying departure because we liked the marina so much and we kept finding things to do and Harborfest to enjoy. A courtesy car would have been nice for groceries, but the weekend Enterprise rental is so reasonable the lack of a courtesy car was not a major inconvenience. The ferry landing to Norfolk is very close as are several good restaurants. No matter what questions we asked, the staff knew the answer or sought it out. Everyone was extremely courteous and helpful. Always smiling and just outstanding service.

Ocean Marine Yacht Center, 2011-05-25
Captain: , Richmond VA (281)

I decided to leave a marina across the water to try Ocean Marina for a few reasons. 1) Nauticus held an event that didn%u2019t' allow me or my family to come and go as we pleased from our boat (just unacceptable) 2) Active captain has a contest for people staying at sponsor marinas. As this area is my home turf I decide to stay for a few weeks. I ended up paying about the same as a week stay at WaterSide for a month stay at Ocean, and let me tell you it was worth it. Ocean Marina is our new favorite marina in the area. The docks were clean and very well maintained. Other boaters were friendly, the staff was helpful, Shower and other facilities were in great condition, and reasonably priced. The Wifi was consistent and not as flaky as I have seen at other marinas. Overall I would recommend Ocean Marine. Again I only give this a 4 star as it lacked a custody car, while some might call that picky I do thing that is a big separator of service provided by the marina. There are a lot of thing in walking distance, including restaurants, bars, library, children%u2019s museum (just opened) and much more. The closet grocery store is an older food lion that isn%u2019t in walking distance for provisioning and the car would have been very helpful.

Stopped for Fuel - great service, 2011-05-25
Captain: , Cleveland (2083)

This was our planned stop based on fuel prices in the area. The marina staff couldl not have been more helpful. Service is where it's at! Easy in/out and right on the river. Would definitely come back - perhaps next time we'll stay in Portsmith now that we've had a chance to see downtown Norfolk.

Old Fashion Service, 2011-05-05
Captain: , PENSACOLA BEACH (172)

We only stopped for fuel. ROD was running down the dock with a big smile and hello. Worked like a maniac with the lines because a strong wind was blowing the boat off the fuel dock... never stopped smiling ...Brought the hose, adjusted the pump speed ... then of all things started washing down the side of the boat. Invited me up to the store to get coffee and cake ... He then brought a cup of coffee down to the boat for my son.

It just does not get any better than this for service at a marina, restaurant, or any other place. Thanks ROD for a job (better than) well done!!!!!!

Fantastic service, 2011-04-22
Captain: , Cruising (3535)

We needed to stop for fuel and Ocean so often has the best price around. We were delayed with high winds and long rush-hour restrictions on some bridges so we called to see how late their fuel dock would be open. They said they would remain open for us, even when our updated arrival would be after 7pm! Not only did they stay open that late, but they were incredibly friendly and helpful and kind about everything. Their service and attitude goes way beyond anything we could have expected. THANK YOU Ocean Marine!

Very Nice and good location, 2011-04-18
Captain: , Ft. Collins CO (100)

Everyone was helpful and accomodating and had very good fuel prices, even though we said we would be staying at the free south dock. For the many things to see and do in the area, check out my review of the free dock, titled "Perfect Location."

Convenient place to refuel prior to heading south., 2011-02-06
Captain: , Gloucester, VA (514)

Convenient fuel stop prior to heading south. Took awhile to get someone%u2019s attention after pulling up to the fuel docks, however, it was early in the morning.

fantastic haulout for catamarans, 2011-01-28
Captain: , Hampton, VA (2573)

We had our catamaran hauled here on the synchrolift. Everything went according to plan including the final bill. No issues whatsoever. Great quality control on all work. Very professional management. If you have a larger catamaran you've probably experienced frustration with yards "too big to fail" that happily bail themselves out with your wallet. I've experienced them in Florida and New England. Ocean Marine, while not inexpensive, is well run, and as a result outcomes including the bill are more predictable. I can't say enough positive about the yard!

Good stop over in Norfolk, 2010-09-25
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1244)

On the ICW just south of mile "0". Norfolk has about the least expensive fuel on the east coast and OM is among the least expensive in the area. VA has recently imposed a 5% tax. Docks need some work, good electric and water pressure. Resturants within easy walk as is ferry to Norfolk

Convenient marina, 2010-06-24
Captain: , Bonita Springs (484)

Easy access along the river. Floating docks are pretty good but in need of a little maintenence but nothing serious. Dock hands are friendly and helpful. Several places to eat an easy walk nearby. Adjacent to the ferries to Norfolk where there are more dining and nitelife opportunities. They have a loaner car to visit Marine stores, Walmart, groceries etc. Bathrooms were pretty nice and private and laundry worked well and was clean. There is a nice marine museum nearby to visit. This marina is abutting the outdoor arena in Portsmouth so if you are there during a concert you get to listen in. Colby Callait and Sheryl Crowe were there our last nite and it was great to sit on the boat with beers and enjoy. The previous evening was an alternative rock concert so not so much for us anyway...

The boat yard attached has a pretty good supply of parts as well. We picked up some stainless fasteners that we needed for some modifications.

Best Fuel Price in Virginia, 2010-06-24
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (273)

We always check the fuel prices and Ocean Marine has the lowest fuel price in North Carolina and Virginia. They offer a Boat US discount and an additional discount for over 1000 gal. Their price includes taxes.

good downtown marina, 2010-06-21
Captain: , Buffalo (1154)

good docks, friendly staff, and the best fuel prices around. The no wake zone is enforced.

Easy fuel stop, 2010-06-11

Great Service, 2010-05-09
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (495)

We broke a transmission cable and had it ordered in the next day. Dave the dock master was a great help and lent us the marina car to get supplies and parts. Randy the parts manager was very helpful and had the cable the next day at half of the West Marine price.

Great place to stay!, 2009-06-22

Good Stop, 2009-06-05
Captain: , Collierville TN (977)

Big modern marina with plenty of space. Had to have some service done while there and was very impressed with their repsonse and their cost.

Located directly across from downtown Norfolk with acess by water-taxe. Have courtesy car for a run to Wal-mart.

Good experience, 2009-03-17
Captain: , Newport, RI (21)

Our Little Harbor 59 has been on the hard in Ocean Marine since last fall, after we made an unexpected stop as the result of a bearing leak. We have been pleased with our ability to work with the staff there, who are congenial and honest, and have been able to get the job done. For that reason we will make this our "home port", shifting from Rhode Island.

Excellent haulout yard, 2008-07-03
Captain: , Long Beach (983)

Used the haulout yard and found them to be top notch. Knowledgeable people in the area we used (travelift, prop, engine). They are very busy in the early fall.
The marina is the above average for the area. Fuel prices are normally close to the bottom of the range.

Good stop over, 2007-09-21
Captain: , Ft. Myers (406)

Clean faciltities and a helpful staff. Walking distance to good downtown restaurants. Lobscouser's seafood is reasonable and excellent. Barons has best burgers, pizza and pub food. Mexican place up the waterwalk is mediocore at best. Thumpers is very good. Amores Italian is terrible.

Nice clean facility, 2007-05-13
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (118)

Clean facility with nice people. Fuel was reasonable.
