Reviews for Norfolk Naval Sailing Center, MWR
Do not use USPS, 2015-11-13
Captain: , Apponaug R.I. (768)

Ordered a new raw water pump. Priority mail to the Naval Sailing Center. BIG no no. When I ordered the pump the rep warned me about using USPS. We had just came from NAS Pax river and the postal service was fine. Not here. The package has to go to the Naval station Norfolk base post office, then to the MWR faility. Once a day someone from the Sailing center has to go to the MWR buisness center to pick up mail. UGH! Fedex and UPS deliver direct to the sailing center. Spent most of today chaseing my pump only to find out it is in route back to the supplier.
It is a nice marina with all floating docks. $1.50 per Ft a day or $5. a weekGood water and power.. Patrick the manager is great. OK heads.

We stay at military facilities whenever we can. this marina is top notch. The staff are wonderful, friendly, and helpful. The floating docks are really nice. We ended staying an extra night to replace a pressure sensor. The staff helped us with finding the part, arranging a rental car and directing us around the base. There is an Enterprise car rental less than a mile walk from the marina. The commissary and NEX are also easily walkable. Enterprise was $35 for a one day rental with an after hours key drop.

Spent a week here, 2015-06-13
Captain: , Florida Keys (734)

$5/ft for the week, incl. electric.

The water was fine, electric was great. Floating docks. Free laundry w/one washer and one dryer. Staff was friendly. The most powerful pump-out we've ever used. They don't mind if you flush your tank out, and pump again.

The NEX and commissary are off-base, a very close walk from gate 3A. Taxi's are allowed to bring you back on base.

There is a small ship's store, and rental kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and powerboats.

Next to the helicopter field. Interesting to watch, but, pretty noisy.

There was no appreciable seas when I was in the harbor.

Not a full-service marina, but staff very knowledgeable and helpful., 2015-05-27

Reported water problem in 2011 corrected. Floating docks installed. We started sailing with dinghy sailing lessons in 2007 and have worked our way up to owning a sailboat. Excellent instructors and the whole staff are very helpful. The lack of fuel is not a big problem as nearby marina fill this need. Other boat owners are quick to help with rides and repairs for transients. Active sailing association at this marina. I am a retired Marine and live 4 miles from the Marina and glad to help visitors with rides or other things. Call Gary at 757-642-6308.

Great Navy MWR Marina Facility, 2014-11-08
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (539)

Have spent the last 6 months visiting Navy MWR marinas on the East Coast and this one wins hands down. Floating docks in great shape, great service in tying up by the Marina Manager, Patrick Curry (who does know how to tie up a vessel). Short cab ride ($7) to Commissary, NEX and Package store.
Came in from the north and left on the West exit.
Service here was great by the manager. Staff here I can see may not be trained or knowledgable about boats (think clerks).
Will stay here again. And use a phone to call. No radio. He is also uploading a new piece for Skipper Bob publications on military marinas.

Well protected, 2014-11-01

A well protected marina right off the bay.

Interesting place, 2014-06-30
Captain: , Kemah, TX (612)

We can only rate this as an average place because of the service the staff renders!!!! We were able to secure a T-Head for four days. We were on floating Bellingham Docks, which we prefer to all others. However, we could NOT raise the staff on the radio. We were only able to contact them by phone (757) 454-2918. The marina staff were immature, not very helpful, and were inefficient. It was embarassing for a Naval Facility!! there is a Naval Exchange Annex within a 3/4 mile walk and the indoor pool. The actual Navy Exchange and Commissary are off-base, and a taxi or rent car is required. We rented a car from Enterprise (they delivered the car - use the West Little Creek location-they have access to the base and were very helpful)

New Special Transient Rate, 2013-10-24
Captain: , Quantico VA (50)

I visited this MWR marina for a day trip 19 OCT 2013 and was surprised to find posted signs on transient slips announcing $10.00 a night and $25.00 Mon-Fri. The new building is still under construction and the long walk around mentioned in previous reviews still pertains, but certainly the pricing is favorable and I short=cutted the walk with my dinghy. The MWR gym is just across the road, and on weekends the larger gym is open about a half mile away.

Sounds Good, But not Really, 2013-06-11
Captain: , Wagram, NC (144)

Arrived 31 May 2013 after several calls and making reservations to find that the amenities offered were not available due to continuing construction. No fresh water at dock, no wifi, no laundry. The main bathhouse is also under construction. Shower required a walk around the marina perimeter. None of this was mentioned when I made reservations or during the other phone calls. When I asked for specific items and thier locations was I told that they were not available.

Was not offered reduced rate.

Entrance channel is charted in the security zone but no problems in or out.

Regular "Sound of Freedom" noise experienced at other military locations (helicopters).

Will not return or currently recommend.

A little Expensive for Military Member, 2012-07-08
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (43)

Is way more expensive compared too Little Creek Marina when both are MWR.

Great Marina!, 2012-03-18
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (80)

Clean showers. Took my boater's safety course here. Great staff, very friendly. Ramp for launching. Rentals available at cheapest prices in the area. No fuel available. Rented a Bayliner bowrider at a great price that was mechanical sound, though cosmetically lacking. Great place to get sailing lessons or rent a sail boat or power boat.

Nice location, 2010-10-31
Captain: , Ophelia, VA (849)

This is a nice marina in an easy to get to location. Only problem is the water. It appears to have a high sulfer content, so only use it for showers and boat washing. If the water were better, I would give it a higher rating. Do not fill up your water tanks here!

Cheapest price around, 2009-07-05
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

You would expect the Navy to have more in a is bare bones. If you are placed on the far side it is like a mine field walking to the office.....lots of geese. The people are great and freindly and will help out anyway they can. You can walk to stores, if you cant get a ride.
