Great Boatyard!, 2015-11-10
Captain: , Scarsdale, NY (190)

I have kept my Island Packet 27 year-round at Nichols for over a decade. They commission and decommission the boat, pretty much on my schedule (early in, late out), which I find remarkable for a busy yard. They service the Yanmar 2GM20 engine; they wash and wax her. Over the years, they have replaced my old aluminum water and holding tanks with new plastic ones. They have soda-blasted, faired, barrier coated and painted the bottom, and they paint the bottom every year or two; they let me know if only a touch-up is needed. They have also done a variety of gelcoat and fiberglass repairs, and this year they replaced my cutlass bearing and rebedded the stern tube on a crash basis. I have found all their work to be superb. They keep me apprised of what needs to be done and they give me realistic estimates of when it will be done. I have found that if I am reasonable with them, they are more than reasonable with me, and this is particularly so of Denis (in charge) and Robert (mechanic) and Zack (gelcoat and fiberglass). Prices are market for this area, and this is a pricey market. I find I get what I pay for: great work, which is what I am looking for. Also, very important, the yard and docks are meticulously maintained, and they let you work on your boat, which I do for non-mission critical tasks (maintaining the teak, etc.).

Enjoyed my stay. Right in town, clean, and quiet. Office was friendly and easy going. Rates a bit high (3/ft) which is going rate in this area but high by east coast standards.

Great repair yard, 2013-10-14
Captain: , long island sound (40)

Had a hydrulic steering problem, we agreeded on a course of action, They called to tell me they removed the ram and asked how I wanted to send the part out overnight etc. They called when the part was back in and had it installed the next day . Bled the system but it still had air, they called me to see If I had some documenation which I faxed to them. I took the boat out for a test drive still some air in the system, so they called the ram vendor and verified the procedures for bleeding air out of the system. Steering was not quite right so they went back again and this time they also lossened one of the lines and got some more air out. That seemed to improve the steering. I found they kept me informed during each step in the process and responded quickly to my concerns. The hourly rate they charged me was fair. I would use them again.

Not Friendly, poor communication, poor managment, 2013-05-09
Captain: , Rye, NY (43)

They nickle and dime you at every avenue. The yard hands are great (4/5 stars). But the Management is poor. Dennis is rude. Takes weeks for repairs...losing precious boating time. You have to chase them down for replies to emails or phone calls.

Nichols Yard, 2012-03-18
Captain: , New York (118)

A very well run yard, Dennis runs a tight ship, Xavier is his right hand man and they manage a huge yard with the courtesy of a small marina. They have rack storage, and Dennis will jump through hoops to help you get the right person to handle any services need that they don't already provide. Great location, great place for off-season storage, friendly to transients, and everyone on the docks get along. A nice family type atmosphere.

Best for do it your self sailors, 2012-01-19

Excellent yard, very well run, plenty of space, will let you work on your boat and help you if required. Very honest.
