Reviews for Newburyport Harbor Marina
Always a great destination., 2016-08-28
Captain: , Weymouth, MA (49)

This was our forth year staying at this marina. Has always been great and this trip was no different. River current can be difficult on docking but plenty of staff present to help guide you. Plenty of restraunts and stores within a short walk.

P.S. local harbormaster did nothing to control the excessive wake even in front of their own dock.... sad.

Thanks again.

Great weekend trip, 2016-08-22
Captain: , Marina Bay (10)

We enjoyed this marina very much. This docks are wide & new-looking & the facilities were clean. The staff is excellent -very knowledgable and friendly. There definitely is a strong current as others have mentioned, but they were ready to help & docking went smoothly.
It's only a short walk to downtown, probably a couple of blocks and there are also a few shops and restaurants right in the area.

Great place to stay, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Gloucester, MA (10)

Newburyport Harbor Marina is a great spot to stay overnight or stop for a day trip. The staff are super helpful and the amenities are very clean. Bill made the stay very comfortable with his welcoming personality.

Management response:
Thank you kindly for the review Capt. Brian... We look forward to hosting your stay with us again in the future.

This is Home, 2016-07-21
Captain: , Newburyport, MA (40)

First year here - love it. Bill, Nate and the rest of the team made us feel at home from day one and take excellent care of us. Fuel, good Internet, firendly and helpful staff and boat owners. Walk off the docks and you are only minutes to downtown, historical Newburyport.

Management response:
Thank you kindly for the review Capt. Webber... If there is anything we can do throughout the season to ensure your stay is as enjoyable as possible please let us know.

"Greatburyport" - Shouldn't Be Overlooked, 2015-08-10
Captain: , Daniel Island, SC (310)

It's easy to pass by without stopping when boating between Boston and Portsmouth. We'll stop in every year because it's a fun, vibrant town.
A well run marina operation always starts with leadership and Bill Neelon provides it while the dockhands execute. It's clean, well run only two blocks from facinating Newburyport and it's maritime history. Plenty of shops for the first mate and many varied restaurant choices for all.

Lost A Little Gel Coat, 2013-09-24
Captain: , Boston, Ma (161)

Two major issues:

1. We made a phone reservation for a slip at the Windward Yacht Yard but were surprised to find our slip was at the Newburyport Harbor Marina. I guess one company bought up all 4 marinas in this downtown stretch but the individual marinas still go by their old names, so don't be surprised when you're slip is not downtown next to the Black Cow. Our slip was at a dock right next to the giant, white diesel storage tank near the fuel dock.

2. We arrived at close to full ebb and could not believe the current. We had a transient slip so of course it was the slip with the worst current (not many would want to spend a full season in this slip), and it was probably the slip with the worst current on the entire river. It appears that after coming down under the bridge, the river makes a bee line to this slip. After docking, the dock lines were as tight as piano strings. The slips run east west with the current, which makes docking doable, but if you don't have experience docking in strong current be prepared to lose some gel coat like we did.

The slip was facing west and the current was coming from the west, pushing us into the slip. The dock master suggested backing in because it is very difficult to back out of the slip when departing if current is up.

If we could do it again, we would come head up into the current directly in front of the slip opening and then let the current push us back into the slip. Do not use reverse because even a little prop walk causes the stern to swing just enough for the current to catch your bow and spin you around. And make sure you head up very close to the slip before you let the current back you, because the current will catch your bow and spin you eventually even without prop walk. (That is what happened to us. We ended up t-boning the dock finger). It is a slip for a single boat, so once the current pushes you back into the slip, you can use forward to hold yourself in place until the dock lines are secured. It also helps that the slips in this location are extra wide.

Bill (owner?) is a great guy. Met Todd the manager and I think Jay working the gas dock this past weekend. (CCHS Alum!) Great spot and if you get boxed out of a spot at the town docks like we did, this is probably the next best bet in town.

Best Marina, 2013-07-19
Captain: , Niantic, Ct (10)

Recently we were heading for Maine and decided to revisit this marina. We had been there a few years ago and had a fabulous time. We were lucky as it was slack tide. The service at this marina is top notch. Todd was there with several dock hands to insure a perfect landing. They are extremely knowledgeble and could not be nicer. The marina is spotless and close to everything in this beautiful town. We ended up spending almost a week there and still never ran out of things to do. We absolutely recommend this marina as not just a stop, but a destination. Do not worry about the current, just pick a semi slack time. the staff will do the rest.

Good Choice, 2012-07-31
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (296)

Jay Larcome the Dockmaster is probably the best I have experienced. Excellent staff. We arrived at full ebb including river current and it was breathtaking in our face. We pulled into the fuel dock and Jay used the current to swing us around to back against the current with our single engine. Transient Guest card gives 15% discount at many participating stores, restaurants, and at the fuel dock.

Class Act, 2012-07-29
Captain: , Red Brook Harbor, Ma. (195)

A very well run operation and Jay and his staff are top notch. They are very helpful and knowledgable getting you in and out of a challanging situaltion. This current is something to see and experience. We purposely came in at almost flood tide and had no problem at the bar or docking. 3 hours later the current runnng through our docks was scary.
Location is super with lots of shopping and eating possibilities.
Timing is everything here to make life easier.

Great Operation, 2011-02-22
Captain: , hingham (161)

First Class operation. Staff could not be more helpful. The current will ensure that your boat bottom and props are clean when you leave. Jay and the dock hands are some of the best we've ever seen. Great city to hang out in. Agree with all of the good stuff said by the other reveiwers.

First Class, 2009-08-30
Captain: , Boston (40)

This is a first class marina with great management. Office and dock staff is helpful, courteous and knowledgeable. Docks are wide and stable and most important are positioned so there are no cross currents. River currents are strong and vary greatly with the tides. Transient slips are single loaded. Fuel is available with good pricing.

Newburyport Harbor Marina is located very close to downtown where there are great restaurants and shopping. The downtown has been redeveloped and is very nice.

I was always concerned about entering the Merrimac but discovered that with good charts and a little research it is a well worthwhile.

We traveled with another boat and we all agree to return again next season.

Highly Recommended, 2009-08-02
Captain: , Portsmouth NH (71)

This is a great marina with top notch people. Jay, the manager, was simply great and his commitment to Customer satisfaction is second to none.

When I inquired about a mechanical issue we were having Jay offered to drive me over to the local Napa store so I could pick up a part. Jay also made arrangements to have their mechanic (Richard) stop by to install the item early the next morning at a very reasonable price.

Location was close to town, yet quiet at night. My wife enjoyed the shops and we went to a concert in the evening at the park. There was also a festival going on in town with lots to do and see. The aroma from a near by bagel shop will have your mouth watering in the morning when the wind is right…

The current can be intimidating at peak however if you time your arrival and/or departure to avoid the tide going out when the current is the strongest you will have no issues. Also there were dock hands at the ready to assist with lines, etc…

Bottom-line – we highly recommend this Mariana based upon our experience there.

Newburyport Harbor Marina, 2009-07-27
Captain: , Monches,wi (330)

This is a first-class marina with first-class people. Particularily Jay the marina owner. Dock hands are great as well.

Very convenient localtion within an easy walk to downtown Newburyport, which we felt was a gem...best place we visited to date alog the entire New England coast.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION.!! Plan your entry at slack tide. The tide runs fierce, particularily outgoing. When entering the marina it will be directly on your beam.

But once in, it's worth the effort. Very highly recommended.
