Reviews for New Buffalo Municipal Marina
New Buffalo Municipal , 2017-09-16
Captain: , Wrightsville beach nc (220)

Very nice marina. Everything seemed well maintained. Restaurants/bars/ town very close. Had trouble contacting them by phone, left messages and no call back. But would go back for sure. States must dock bow in but our 50amp cord is on the stern so we backed in, it was mentioned but no problem

Don't use MIDNR reservation system, 2017-09-01
Captain: , Nashville, TN (273)

This is more of a review of the MIDNR site and the city/state employees. Made a reservation here for a Thursday night, changed plans mid day Thursday due to changing weather window on Lake that never happens out there. DNR policy does not allow changes day of reservation....despite weather....a call to DNR directed me back to the Marina....Marina personnel directed me back to state...typical government runnaround. Anyway, forfieted slip fee for the night. No big deal but the state charges 8 bucks for the service of their reservation system that is much less flexible than anywhere else. Unless it's a holiday weekend, I wouldn't bother with this system.

Small but nice & near restaurants, grocery, etc., 2017-08-09

Marina appears well kept, have not been to bathrooms yet. Since they like to enforce a bow in tie up I asked for stern in since my power is aft. They said I could borrow their 50 amp cord to make it work. After tgetting the boat in & settled I went to get the 50 amp cord & it was only a 30amp. I have a splitter so asked about another 30 amp, which they said they had, but could not locate it. Believe the Marina should post these requirements rather than let boaters find it out upon arrival. Having said that, most boaters I spoke with here seemed to enjoy the location and come back regularly. The cord was not a big issue, just an annoyance. 8/9 went to take a shower and us Bathroom. Only 1 stall, it had a plunger sitting beside it and toilet paper all over the floor like it had been used to clean up a toilet backup. There are 2 showers, both looked unclean and in need of updating. Decided to go elsewhere for toilet & skip the shower. Changed rating from a 4 to a 3 based on this and thought about a 2 star.

It's a nice town to visit! Marina is fine for a day stop., 2016-06-08
Captain: , Burnham Harbor, Chicago (251)

We've never overnighted in this harbor but if there is a transient slip available (It fills up on busy weekends) it is a good place to tie up. They don't like if you stern in so be ready for that. The burger at the Stray Dog is worth the wait.

2016 update: Memorial Day, harbor office was closed and only one other boat in the marina. I made a reservation with MI DNR even though I was just stopping for a few hours (Didn't want to get stuck without a slip.) No one was there so we tied up, left a note and a cell number & enjoyed the town for a few hours. Strange that they had no one there on a holiday weekend.

Great summer town, 2014-03-27
Captain: , Chicago, IL (1056)

The Municipal Marina is not fancy, but the town is easy walking distance - grocery store, boat supplies at Sweetwater, lot's of boutique shopping; closest West Marine is in Michigan City; kayak/paddle the Galien River; pack a lunch and walk across the bridge to the beach. If water level in Lake Michigan is low call ahead for a report on channel depth (I would call Oselka for this as the Municipal is usually staffed by kids during the season).

Love the vibe in this little town, 2013-01-19
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

We try to visit New Buffalo multiple times a year just to enjoy the vibe of this little beach town! The Municiple Marina has a great location to downtown and is considerably cheaper than any other marina in town. It's a short walk to a great beach.

There can be a considerable current after a rain since this marina is located right after a 90 deg. turn of the river as it heads for the lake. The docks are fixed metal and are placed rather high. The restroom facilities are average for a municipal marina...functional but nothing fancy. They have been clean everytime we have visited.

Three Star only, 2012-08-29

Good and bad at this marina.
Great location. Great town. Has a good breakfast of SOS in Rosies on the main street. There is a very good boat store on the main street also. Several nice restaurants. Good docks. Great location to move across the lake to Chicago.
Bad - the marina staff is inattentive. Never saw a manager. They dont answer any of the VHF radios. Had to call them on the phone. Why dont they pay attention?
The two young girls who work here appear to be pre-occupied with Facebook or something else. They just sit in the office and it appears to do nothing. They did come out and take a line when we were coming in but disappeared back to their chairs in the office right away.
When I asked about some things in town, they were pretty dumb about it. Where is the laundry? Duh, not sure. Turns out its right across from Oink's Ice Cream (which is great) but a .5 mile walk from the marina.

Nice Town to Visit, 2012-07-31
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

Docks are nice and well protected behind the breakwaters. The docks are on the channel that goes under the bridge where other marinas (that cater to seasonal boaters or that are private) are located. So, there is quite a bit of boat traffic going by (particularly on weekends) but they mostly comply with no wake requirement. The showers/heads are in a relatively new building and are too small for the marina size. Plus, they were dirty for the first two days we were here. But, when we gently complained, they were immediately cleaned. Staff doers not help with docking and was not real familiar with the town. On the plus side, the town is great. Lots of neat shops and restaurants. Barney's is a great grocery store. We had dinner at Casey's near the marina and it was great. Ate lunch twice at Redamak which has GREAT hamburgers. The marina does not have washer/dryers but there is a good laundromat about 7 blocks away. New buffalo has a very nice beach (which was packed on the weekend). But much less populated on other days. All in all we really liked the town and the marina was okay.

New Buffalo Marina, 2012-07-11
Captain: , Chicago (10)

Really nice town deserves a better marina. Shower facilties marginal. Tried to get details of harbor before trip, phoned many times, phone went into voice mail on every occasion. when we were approaching the harbor at 2 pm on a Thursday afternoon there was no harbor master on duty, tried to hail them on VHF and cell phone no one replied. Very thin water, if you have a draft over 6 feet give this marina a miss.

Courteous and helpful attendants. Nice docks. Watch out for a good rain and the slips could be hard to approach if the river is running.

New Buffalo Marina, 2011-09-05

Must visit on Lake Michigan, 2011-09-05
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Good restaurants. Try Brewertons for Italian. Enterprise will deliver car rental from Michigan City. Great grocery store with Chicago market in mind. Marina has no laundry but is protected from the lake storms.

Nice Municipal, 2011-02-21
Captain: , Holland, MI (117)

Very nice small and quaint Municipal Marina. Watch your depth entering the channel and stick to the middle with a deeper draft vessel. Clean showers and docks. Very convenient easy walk to shopping and entertainment. Limited dock space so phone ahead or make a reservation through the State of Michigan DNR.
