Reviews for Morningstar Marinas - Golden Isles

The marina had some damage in the hurricane but it is open and accepting transients.

Lives up to the reviews, 2016-10-02
Captain: , Hilton Head Island, SC (365)

Just came back from a short cruise from Hilton Head Island to the St Simons/Jekyll area and this Marina is excellent... Excellent access, excellent transient dock, fair fuel prices with helpful, efficient and cheerful staff. The fresh muffins in the morning are a pleasant treat and walking to a very nice restaurant in the marina is also a plus. The second day, took Uber into the old part of Saint Simons, did the "touristy things" and had a great late lunch/early dinner at "The Half Shell". The 2.8 mile walk back was easy on a wide bike/walking path with benches to pause at along the way. The only "less than perfect part of the path is on the bridge crossing back to the marina. The walking path on the bridge is only seperated from the roadway with a three foot stripped area. Safe but a bit un-nerving with the pace of the cars coming at you. I will definately return.

Returned on 9/30/16 and it's still a fine place to enjoy the area from. Coastal Kitchen is under new ownership, has a liquor liscense and very good food and service. The had some slight damage from Huricane Hermine but everything is running smoothly

saved the day!, 2016-09-06
Captain: , Pawleys Island (114)

One of our favorites! Everything you've ever wanted or needed is here! Stayed five months thru the spring and summer. Right befor we left, we Took a direct and unusual hit from tropical storm Hermine! Chris and the staff were all hands on deck during the entire event! They were at the ready working lines and helping save the day. We were unscathed thanks to them and able to head out at first light the next morning to begin our adventure south! Thank you Golden Isle Marina for keeping us safe! And thank you Penny for your caring and compasion! Our Miss Molly enjoyed the treat and the hospitality! We will return again and again!

fuel problems, 2016-05-31
Captain: , mobile, al (121)

Lovely marina and helpful staff. However, I and another vessel took on diesel at the same pump and upon leaving, both had engines shut down about 10 miles out with water. Called marina, they sounded tanks and reported that found no water, but I don't believe in coincidence.

Management response:
Captain Kuppersmith:

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Active Captain. I am sorry to hear you experienced motor issues ten (10) miles after leaving our docks due to water in your fuel but please know the issues you faced were completely independent from the fuel you received from Morningstar.

We take the quality of our fuel very seriously which is why we check our fuel system daily through an automated auto stick which checks for water and fuel levels and even go so far as to check manually with water paste as a failsafe having confirmed absolutely no water in our tanks. We take this extra step each morning in an effort to assure our customers of the integrity of our fuel on a daily basis.

Upon hearing of your issues, my dock master went back to re-stick our tanks to reconfirm the absence of water in our fuel and in turn, found there was “No” water present which is the standard here at Morningstar Marinas-St. Simons Island. Although I can’t tell you how the water ended up in your fuel, I can assure you it was not from our system.

My suggestion would be to contact the other vessel who had issues to see if you both stayed at the same facility prior to coming to us. One other important factor to consider is that two days prior to your stay through and including two days after your stay, we sold north of 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel to both transient boats, in-house charter boats and well as, other in-house motor yachts with absolutely no issues.

I just can’t reiterate enough that there is no water present in our fuel and that the unfortunate issues you experienced did not come from this marina. If you would like to speak with me directly, I would ask that you not hesitate to contact me at any point in time for it is my sincere hope we will have the opportunity to have you back with us in the coming months.

Thank you again for staying with us as we wish you safe travels.

Captain: , jupiter,fl (130)

Most of all dock master, Chic, is a most pleasant, highly capable man who takes care of business with a smile on his face all day...what a good guy. The loaner car for running into town and provisioning is a huge plus as are the free bicycles for an easy ride into the town of St. Simons. The Coastal Kitchen, the restaurant at the marina, is easily accessible and an enjoyble dining spot after a long day on the water. A first class marina.

Memorable stay, 2016-03-30
Captain: , Oxford, MD (610)

We spent 3 nights here and there is not a lot to add to the comments on the wonderful staff, services, cleanliness, etc. We were scheduled for 2 nights but ran into an issue with our genset while at anchor. It was Easter Sunday and we called the marina to ask if we could come in a day early. Mitch was super friendly and professional. He was at the dock to greet us and help with the lines.
The restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, is under new management and does not yet have a liquor license (nor can you b.y.o.b.). The menu looks very nice although we opted instead to UBER into the wharf area in town. We ate at an Argentinian/Italian restaurant, Del Sur. We had a wonderful meal and enjoyed the ambiance and service. Del Sur also has an award winning bakery in town and we purchased some wedding cookies that were as good as my own homemade.

We needed the services of a diver and John Baker took care of us. He was very professional and knowledgeable. The next day, he called to ask if our issue had been resolved. Very impressive! We will be back!

The best marina, 2016-02-10
Captain: , flowery branch (10)

One of the best marinas we've stayed at on the east coast. Staff is great and are so helpful with your needs. They actually do have bics that you can use and a car. Good slip rate

Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (450)

Be very mindful of the current adjacent to the fuel/transient dock both coming and going. Helpful and reliable assistance will be provided. And don't miss the on site restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, which is exceptionally good. Try to have Cori as your server. All-in-all, a very professionally run marina from the first phone call until we left the dock the next day.

Great marina with convemient location, 2015-11-03

Very nice marina with a great stafff. The marina is big so be prepared to walk the dock to their excellent restuarant, shower aand laundry facilites.

Good and easy stop, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1876)

Easy access off of the ICW, call for directions. Great wide concrete floating docks. Good power, fair price. $1.80 ft plus $12 power. St Simons is a great location. Coastal Kitchen is a great restaurant.

Been here a number of times previous comments still accurate, discount dock is $2.00 foot plus $12 for elec.

Great Team and Liveaboard Spot, 2015-09-14
Captain: , Mystic, CT (112)

Well we have been here almost a month now. We are liveabaords at the marina and are engjoying it emensly. The staff and dockhands are the best at what they do. Professional, courteous, and very knowledgeable. The marina manager Chris goes out of his way to make sure everything makes your stay here pleasant and "feels like home".

If you are transiting the area and looking for a great place to stop over, this is definately it and worth the trip in off the ocean. It's also conveniently located right next to the ICW.

The marina has a courtesy car and bikes to use.

Make it a place to stop on your next trip throug...

Top Notch Marina, 2015-09-10
Captain: , Nashville (315)

We had never been to St. Simons Island before, simply because the mileage just never worked out for us to stop there. We decided to spend our summer there, and I'm so happy that we chose to stay at Morningstar.

When I say that the staff here bends over backwards to make sure you're happy, I mean it. They really do go above and beyond, and they are sincere in their willingness to help.

The facilities are clean, the wifi is strong, and there are all sorts of things to do in the area, and again, the staff is phenomenal. I definitely recommend this place to anyone transiting the ICW.

Great people, 2015-09-01
Captain: , Nashville, TN (190)

We've been here for the last three months waiting out hurricane season. Chick, Mitch, Chris and all the staff are top notch, extremely curteous, helpful and knowlegable. The pool is a fabulous little gathering place.

The bathrooms are always clean, showers are hot and the Coastal Kitchen (restaurant on premise) has a cool little bar, live music and great food. The current in here can be wicked but you lie fore and aft to it and not broadside. The scenery is beautiful and while it is a few miles onto the island, they offer free bikes and a courtesy car for shopping. I mean this place has 90 plus reviews and five stars so I'm not telling you anthing new but I'm a recent occupant and that sometimes helps.

Don't miss Jekyll Island and some cool local stuff like the open mic night at Palm Coast on Mondays. A trip into Brunswick is worth it to eat at Tipsy's on the main drag. It's an awesome little town with live music in the square on the first Friday of the month.

Great place - helpful staff, 2015-08-16
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (201)

Stayed there twice - one night each time. Very helpful dockmaster. They also have a nice loaner vehicle. Restaurant on premises (but I did not try it). Pool as well. Only down side is it's about a 1/4 mile walk from the outer transient docks to the bath house.

Beautiful marina, 2015-06-27
Captain: , Onset, MA (90)

Chip, dockmaster, very friendly-- brought us muffins and newspaper in the morning! Not walking distance to anything but they have a loaner car. Nice pool and bathrooms, restaurant and shops on site.

Great Service, 2015-06-20
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

Prior reviews are correct, the current provides a bit of a challenge in docking. But the staff will tell you as you come in, which way to tie to their face dock to account for the current. They do a great job. Very professional. In fact, a storm blew up later that evening, and the dockhand was willing to stay as late as necessary to assist all vessels coming into their dock, no matter how long it was after normal closing. And yes, to muffins and newspaper the next morning were very nice.
My only negative is that the docks are showing wear. Don't go barefoot, as you will get splinters. But other than that the facility is very nice.

Nice stop at St Simmons., 2015-06-16
Captain: , Sunbury, Ga (352)

Mitch did a great job tying us up at mid tide when the current was running strong. The pool was refreshing after a hot day on the water. The restrooms were clean. The muffins were delicious and a nice touch. Set your fenders higher than normal as this is a high floating dock.

worth a visit, 2015-05-28
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1134)

Long floating face dock, easy in and out, but watch the current. Everything is in good shape. Attentive staff, muffins and local paper in the morning is a nice touch.

First Class Marina, 2015-05-26
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (919)

Beautiful marina with a great onsite restaurant. Rented a car from Enterprise and toured St. Simons and Jekyll Island.

Came for a day and stayed two months, 2015-05-06
Captain: , Hampton, VA (271)

I expected to be gone the day aftyer I arived but the weather turned bad so I decided to stay for a month. At the end of the month the weather was bad again so I re-upped for another. But this time I had to drive up to Myrtle so I left the boat there. Great place to stay with reasonable rates. They have fuel and pumpout. It is a long walk to the showeres/rest room/laundry but they are clean and well maintained. The restaurant has really good food but is a bit pricey. You can get all over St Simons Island with a bike. Restaurants/groceries/movies are all within biking distance, but not walking. Sal's Pizza is the best this side of New York. Walmart and West Marine will require a car to get to and there are no auto parts stores on St Simons.

Awesome Facility, 2015-05-04
Captain: , Little River SC (365)

First class Marina, just watch out for the cab drivers in town, they will stick it to you.

A very nice place, 2015-04-20
Captain: , Nowhere,OK (1314)

Dock hands are super helpful and we got to use the marina loaner car without a huge wait.

Fresh muffins and the paper in the morning and they helped us get off the dock at 7AM

On site eatery is OK, but can be very busy for Friday / Saturday dinners.

Quiet marina, 2015-04-19
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (880)

Good dock staff. No wake zone but some rocking. Long walk to shore on nice wooden walks, gazebo/bbq area. Nice bath/showers/laundry. Pool and restaurant nice. Courtesy car good to provision, hardware store, etc.

April 2015--update muffins and newspaper delivered to the boat was appreciated. Previous review still accurate. Nice folks here!

Loaner Car a big plus, 2015-04-14
Captain: , Wicomico Creek, MD (494)

A challenging docking especially on the T with a stiff wind out of the south and strong current. Loaner car for provisioning is a real + even with the one hour restriction. Discount card for further up the ICW locations is a novel idea that will get some use. Dock hands very helpful.

great restaurant on site, 2015-04-05
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

Coastal Kitchen is a great restaurant. Get a reservation early. Terrific sea food especially oysters, shrimp and shrimp and grits. Offer an all you can drink wine selection.
Marina is floating wooden docks that need pressure washing. Fuel at good price, $2.80/gal for diesel 4/5/15 with boat us discount.
Very good assistance from dock hand on duty. Moderately strong current parallel to dock, not too difficult with help on dock. Wakes not bad. Had trouble with first power pedestal , OK with second.
Courtesy car available for 1 hr at a time.Did not check out the showers or bathrooms.
Bike path to Dt Simon starts right out front. Great paths for biking or walking. Small ships store with limited selection and short hours on site.
Restaurant has a bar and occasional music on site.
$5/pp cab ride to pier where the shopping lighthouse, museum and Ice Cream are.

Friendly with a courtesy car, 2015-03-24
Captain: , Greenville SC (250)

Great place to reprovision, with the courtesy car. Friendly, helpful staff. Restrooms and laundry are clean, although quite a distance from the dock. Decent restaurant on site.

Update to review, 2015-03-14
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (636)

Helpful dock master, good shower, new washer & dryer, internet worked well. The morning muffins and paper were a nice welcom touch. We did not take advantage of the loaner car. The one knock was that we experienced intermittant failure of one of the 30amp power points. The Coastal Kitchen has very nice brunch omelets and the dinners were well prepared ...warning, the lobster nachos are for the table NOT the individual -- very good!.

When back this way we will definitely stop over.

UPDATE: The folks at Golden Isles followed up on my comment about the power issue -- intermittant polarity reversal. In my view that action reflects very positively on the management at Golden Isles.

2nd Visit early March. Definitely a best stop for us.

I lived here for 2 months, 2015-03-10
Captain: , Lizella GA (1414)

I have stayed here three times and plan to be back. The last time I was here for 2 months because it is a great place. The staff are top notch and help with docking and leaving. The food is excellant very high end and popular with the locals. It is close to ICW and the Atlantic. There are all the places you may need for supplies in easy distance with the loaner car. This marina has all the pluses you can want or need.

Very Nice Facility, 2015-01-11
Captain: , Traverse City, Mi (281)

We were only here for an over-night, but we enjoyed our stay. Great staff - provided excellent docking assistance and area info. Showers and bathrooms were clean. The Coastal Kitchen was a pleasant surprise for dinner - very nice meal. We will stop here again and take some time to see St Simons Island and other parts of the area.

How a Marina should be managed, 2014-09-08
Captain: , Oriental (138)

Chris and his team do a great job and run a well-managed facility. The personnel are knowledgeable, Southern courtesy abounds and the facilities are first class. As noted previously the currents in this region are strong and for mariners unfamiliar with the area this can be intimidating. No need for any concerns here. Dockhands (Chic, Mark, Buck & Mitch) are always standing by to catch lines and offer assistance when needed. Showers and restrooms are very clean and climate controlled. Laundry has 2 washers and 2 dryers, $1.50 to wash and $.75 to dry a large load. Onsite facilities include ships store, boat brokerage, hair salon, charter fishing services and a PADI Dive shop with certification classes. Boat rental is available with well-appointed fishing boats. Live and frozen bait is also available onsite. The courtesy car is a newer model Honda CRV that%u2019s well maintained and usually available. Loaner bikes are also available: the beach and village are a 12-minute ride away with bike paths the entire route! The onsite restaurant Coastal Kitchen is very nice %u2013 not the usual Burgers and sandwiches %u2013 here%u2019s a link to the tripadvisor review In addition to excellent food and a great bar Jeff, the owner and a musician himself has local bands preforming 3-5 nights a week and the quality is outstanding. Nothing much nicer than floating around the marina pool listening to live music... All around a great place to stay and the St. Simons community is as beautiful as any Southern Resort area.

Great place that cares., 2014-08-04
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1459)

Been here before and keep going back. Easy in and the dockmasters know just exactly how to get you in even with tricky tide and river currents. Always a friendly welcome and warm muffins and newspaper in the mornings. Easy bike ride into the downtown area with shopping and several good places to eat.

Wonderful spot, 2014-07-12
Captain: , palm harbor (160)

We stayed at Golden Isles for May and a part of June and are heading back by August 1. The staff is great and make you feel like you have been there forever. Mitch on the dock always has a smile on his face and is very helpful as is Chris in the office.
We had the bottom cleaned there at 2/ft. Restaurant is good and there is a pool near the restaurant for marina guests. Its a little walk to the showers, but they are clean and the docks are big enough to take your bike without having to worry about falling in!

make this a stop as you are heading north or south. St Simons is just over the bridge and has anything you need.

very helpful, 2014-06-22

had genset problem called late and helped out with place to stay, had plenty of dock help next day and fixed problem.

Best of the best, 2014-05-03
Captain: , Castine, ME (58583)

Spring 2014 - arrived again intending to stay for only a coulple of days. The courtesy car to Harris Teeter is a wonderful capability to get groceries for the next week or so. The weather turned bad and we ended up waiting for offshore weather for 9 days! They were wonderful in allowing us to figure out the best discount possible at the end of our stay especially since we didn't realize we would be there that long.

This is a really great place to wait out weather. The docks are safe and the staff is very knowledgable. It's a first class organization. We always love the feeling of coming here.

Previous review:
Another trip south and another stay at Golden Isles. We wouldn't miss it. Definitely the best line handlers and docking help anywhere on the waterway. See you next season!

Previous review:
If marina management were a martial art, Morningstar Golden Isles would be a black belt master. They have the best environment for transients that I've seen. Nice docks, easy in and out, knowledgable assistance, and on and on.

We ate at the restaurant which was fantastic - nicely prepared local seafood and even got Maine Yankees like us liking the grits. Dinner with drinks was about $60.

If my boat were going to be kept for a longer period of time in a marina, I'd strongly consider this place. The boats are well watched. The facilities are protected with good access to transportation. And being north of Cumberland Island allows many boats to stay for the summer here. There's even electronic security.

We met Chris and Chick. Both know what they're doing and make docking and undocking simple. These guys are licensed captains themselves and it shows. The whole experience was excellent.

And leaving in the morning, a paper and muffins were waiting on our doorstep (getting past our crackerjack security dog team). Nice touch - and it's not just us - everyone gets a morning treat!

Thanks guys - you're the best.

Easy in and easy out. All the needed services. Very kind and polite staff. Stayed late to catch our lines. A well run and fully equiped marina.

Great in water summer storage, 2013-12-05
Captain: , Clear Lake, TX (694)

Spent June through November, 2013 at marina. Everything was as advertised and reviewed. The staff was excellent and service is their game. No items were too small to address. A few drawbacks were far overshadowed the the staff & facilities. My drawbacks were a one time Morningstar $29 dollar admin fee to set up computer for longer term customers and the lack of an inside boater's lounge. The marina has adequate restrooms and showers (although a little walk away) and a very small laundry room. The proximity to St. Simons Island is areal plus.

transient dockage, 2013-11-26
Captain: , Annapolis (160)

We stopped here on our way south. Dockmaster was very accomadating staying late to fuel us up and giving valuable advice on the shoals ahead.

Nice Marina but expensive, 2013-11-24
Captain: , Titusville, Florida (10)

I thought the bathrooms could be cleaner and they are far from boats. I don't think there is a laundry.

Great People and Facility, 2013-11-06
Captain: , Pleasant Prairie, WI (40)

Spent all of hurricane season 2013 here. You will not find nicer people anywhere. Couldn't do enough for you. The facilities are great and all the convienences of beautiful St. Simons Island is an easy bike ride away.

We'll definately come back.

Excellent Service! Great Docks!, 2013-10-31
Captain: , Cape Porpoise, Maine (240)

This was our second time staying here since Morningstar took over. Easy access from outside or from the ICW. Dock master Chick is a consummate professional with his clear instructions, efficient help and friendly manner. The transient dock is easy on and off. Finally, the restaurant has improved tremendously and is worth a try.

Morningstar Marina, 2013-10-31
Captain: , Sandwich (692)

The women in the office were pleasant and most helpful. The marina docks are old wood splintering docks. The bath/shower facilities could be cleaner. Pet owners need to take better care of their dog's poop (found 3 hazards on the docks) and leaving them tied to bark. Live-aboards need to be do their grinding/sanding/sawing someplace else. 3 perks was the morning delivered muffins and newspaper, pool and restaurant but not perky enough to stop heading north.

Captain: , Live-a-board (350)

DInghied over, Chris and Chick were very helpful in regards to some questions we had about SSI. Was anchored on north side of bridge but they treated us kindly as though we were docking patrons. Very nice facility and dockage, enjoyed the restaurant and happy hour

First class marina, 2013-07-09
Captain: , Hilton Head Island, SC (377)

Arrived with a 20kt wind out of the south and requested and was given a side tie along the face dock. A dockmaster was waiting for us and helped us tie up and connect power. Another helpful dockmaster assisted with our departue the next morning.

The facility is very is very nice with clean bathrooms, a very nice pool area and even a gas grill and tables on a covered deck area. They even loaned us a nice vehicle for an hour so we could do some shopping on St. Simon's Island.

A week at Morningstar Marina, 2013-06-27
Captain: , Tierra Verde, FL (30)

The facility and staff deserve a 5 star rating. Alfred (Dock Master), Chip and crew are awesome. Great week and would recommend to anyone wanting southern hospitality and exceptional service.

Six weeks later, 2013-06-10
Captain: , Weston, VT (550)

Our trawler spent six weeks at Morningstar while we attended to a house sale back home. We spent a week total on board before heading north. Chris and Alfred are the best. They run a friendly helpful marina and will go out of their way to please. We happened to arrive the day before Tropical storm Andrea and the staff was out checking everybodies lines and doubling up where needed. Also has a great restaurant attached.

Good stop just a bit off ICW, 2013-05-15
Captain: , Silverthorne, CO (373)

We docked on inside of face dock right next to Dockmaster building. He was attentive and docking was easy. He gave us a Morningstar card for discounts at their other marinas that don't do BoatUS discounts. We took the courtesy car (nice Jeep SUV) to St. Simons to check it out, but at an hour max. we couldn't really do anything there. Next time, we'll bike it. Free paper and muffins in the morning. Very professional.

Great Overnight, 2013-05-07
Captain: , Philadelphia (90)

Heading north to Manasquan, stopped in for the night. Apparently on Tuesday nights the Resturant at the marina is having various specials. There was a live band and vodka rep at the Resturant and the food was off the hook. Floating docks, very friendly dock master, good fuel discounts, the fuel dock is quite and calm.

A repeated stop for us., 2013-03-06
Captain: , Bluffton, South Carolina (327)

We have stayed overnight at this marina several times. The facility is first rate and the dock personnel are very knowledgable. Went to the on-site restaurant for the first time 3/2/13 and were very impressed. Muffins and the morning paper delivered to your vessel in the early morning is a nice touch. Be careful coming and going from the marina out at R2; cutting across from either east or west to get to the ICW can mean grounding. Have seen a couple of non-locals make that mistake.

Great place, 2012-12-12
Captain: , San Francisco, CA (312)

We anchored off the marina for a few days and for only $5 we could park the dinghy and use their laundry. For a few dollars more we could use the showers. There are 2 hair salons on the property and we both took advantage of those to get tidied up a bit. We then pulled into the marina for 2 nights to top off batteries, do more laundry, shower, etc. GREAT location for exploring St Simons and Jekyll Islands.

1st Class Marina, 2012-12-08
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

Large high good docks, excellent staff to greet you in Buck.
Loaner car to allow you to go to Harris Teeter for groceries.
Good laundry and bathrooms.

The Best Marina Option, 2012-12-07
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4015)

Whether you are stopping for a night, or for a month (great monthly rates) Morningstar Marina - Golden Isles is your best option. Quality docks and services, quality personnel, and many shopping/provisioning/site seeing/historical opportunities on St. Simons Island make for a wonderful experience. It is a friendly, welcoming, supporting environment.

Great stop and great facilities, 2012-11-21
Captain: , Carolina Beach, NC (362)

All the same as other reviews. And-- they have a new courtesy car! We stop there twice a year going south and north.

3 month stay, 2012-11-19
Captain: , Sitka (39)

The facility was recommended by a fellow cruiser for a long term spot. We have not been dissapointed. We were at the dock for Sandy without any issues. Great support. We will be here until the middle of January 2013. Explore St. Simon Island it has a lot of history!

A nice barrier island stop, 2012-10-18
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (507)

Golden Isles is a great stop southbound, particularly after a long run from the Savannah area. The dockhands are great. There is a current along the transient dock that the folks there know how to deal with professionally. The docks are wide and stable. The facilities are clean; the cable and wifi adequate. We had no issues with the power provided. The loaner car is a nice touch but it would be helpful if the time allowed were extended to two hours. There is not much within walking distance of the marina and the current one hour is short.

5 Star Marina, 2012-10-16
Captain: , Kemah, TX (612)

My wife and I can't say enough good things about this marina. A bit away from Brunswick, but they have a new Jeep they will loan you for an hour or so at a time to run to Brunswick or St. Simon's Island. There are also bikes available to sightsee around St. Simon's Island. beautiful and historic place. Home of the Methodist Church here in the United States.

This is a stop over for some of the really nice 75+++ foot yachts coming south for the winter. Very busy here. Only complaint I have heard is about the current. Can't complain about that at all. The guys here have huge experience with docking and launching boats in current, and they take all of the worry out of that issue. Chick and Buck are just super nice and helpful here on the dock. Chris, the marina manager, has been so helpful to both my wife and I. We have been here for 2-1/2 months, and would stay longer with no hesitation, but we need to start the trek south.

My ONLY complaint is the no-se-ums this year. HOLY MOLY!! But that was only for a week! Not much wind here so they hung around for a bit of lunch, breakfast, dinner, and a midnight snack!! LOL!

The restaurant here is just excellent, music on weekends and some nights during the week. Try the Lobster Nacho's. Jeff, the owner/manager is extremely nice and is an excellent drummer in his own right. The pool is excellent, and provides great relief in warm weather. There is a ship's store here, boat repairs available, laundry, hair dresser, insurance folks, a gift store, and West Marine is a short car trip away, and Tad and Trey are great to work with there.

One major advantage is this is the western most point on the East Coast, so protection from hurricanes is excellent.

A VERY nice stop, 2012-09-15
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2486)

I don't want to repeat all the good things said by previous reviewers about the facilities or staff. We thought this was a very good package of amenities for the price.

The only negatives are: a long walk from the transient face dock to the marina facilities, and all the stuff to do and see on St. Simons is several miles away. A bike or taxi is almost a necessity.

Very enjoyable overnight, 2012-08-08
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (231)

We stayed here on our way north and again on our way south (7/31/12) on the ICW. The marina features a long floating transient dock with an easy aproach. The current is strong in this area but runs parrallel to the dock and posed us no problem. We had fun with Buck, the staff member who helped us dock. The marina helps get your morning off to a good start with delicious blueberry muffins and a paper delivered to your boat around sun-up. Nice touch, thanks Buck. This is a great stop along the ICW. We'd give it five stars if it were closer to restaurants and other attractions.

everything was great, 2012-07-25
Captain: , jax, fl (111)

This was our first ever marina. We only planned to stay 1 or 2 nights but TS beryl changed that. The staff absolutely knew what they were doing. They moved our boat twice as we all readied for the storm. Great but pricey restaurant right there, and pizza delivery close by too. Docks, restrooms, wifi, everything was great. We will be back.

One of the best, 2012-07-23
Captain: , GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL (736)

Ditto all the other positive reviews. Professional dock crew and office staff. All very helpful. And they seem to enjoy doing what they do. We spent a month at the transient dock, used the facilities--showers, laundry, pool--all clean and modern. The car and bicycles available were a great help in making it to shopping including West Marine. Even the traffic going by seems to honor the "no wake" more than other marinas I've known. All at a competitive rate. This marina is tops on my list!

Fantastic Marina, 2012-07-12
Captain: , little river (269)

This is one of the best marinas we have stayed at. Came in at low tide and were given specific instructions to stay 50 to 75 yrds off the green markers and not to make the mistake of turning up the ICW which is very close. The staff were waiting at the dock to help us tie up and get settled. The could not have been nicer even though it was getting late, never rushed or hurried us. The loner car was quickly offered for a trip to West Marine and the grocery store. Bicycles are available for use. The docks are in first class condition. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The pool was wonderful in the July heat. The resturant was very good and as a guest of the marina we received a 10% discount on dinner. Also with the card they gave us we will receive 10% discount at other Morningstar Marinas. We will be back on our way south.

One of our most favorite marina stays, 2012-05-11
Captain: , Marion, MA (51)

The Morningstar Marina %u2018Golden Isles%u2019 in St Simons was excellent in every respect.
The staff is professional, friendly, helpful and well informed. Though not an easy walk to the grocery store a complimentary %u2018loner car%u2019 was willingly made available. Complimentary bikes were also available. We were able to BBQ ashore in a well-designed, covered area with high quality outdoor furniture near the dock gate. We didn%u2019t use the restaurant in the marina complex but friends rate it very highly. We stayed two nights and would return without hesitation. Frankly I do not know how any marina could do better.

Sadly, based on our experience in St Simons, we eagerly reserved a slip at their associated marina in Thunderbolt; %u2018Bahia Bleu%u2019. The price per foot was the same but there was no comparison between the professionalism, the facilities or the service. Everything %u2018Golden Isles%u2019 excelled at they failed miserably.

Great dock hands, 2012-05-11
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

We came in on one engine and the dock hands were a great help.
They also hooked us up with a great machanic.
The resturant on site had excelant food, however on the pricy side.
The showers are ok as long as the toilets are not flushed.

Captain: , Annapolis, MD (343)

Nice marina convienent to the ICW. Nice returanrt/bar on premisis. Fule is a little on the expensive side.

A real nice stop, 2012-03-15
Captain: , Mullica Hill, NJ (688)

Very good dock hand. He was willing to stay a bit late so I could use the courtesy car to go buy a filter that I needed. The docks are wide. It is a long way to the heads ishowers if you need them, and an even longer walk to the dog walking area. The restaurant was excellent. Will stop longer and take the time to explore St. Simon I.

Up scale stop, 2012-01-20
Captain: , New Bern, NC (466)

We needed fuel and WiFi (daughter needed to do class work) so we stopped here on a chance choice. Loaner car was available for an hour, Ace Hardware for propane, supermarket, banks, etc. close by if you use the car. I treated my daughter to supper at the onsite eatery. Nice place, wonderful food. Showers very clean and they broght a news paper and muffins to the boat in the morning. I'd stop again just for the muffins. There is a dive shop here as well.

One of the best, 2012-01-01
Captain: , Red Lion, DE (712)

2012-01-01 Aboard Solitude Seeker. This is our 2nd stay here and we continue to be very impressed with this facility. Would have given it a five star rating except that the dockhand had me wait for twenty minutes at the fuel dock while he checked in a rental boat, then refueled and cleaned it, before he moved it from behind us so that we could back down the dock to our tie-up spot - he and I walked the boat backwards. He was very pleasant but evidently did not grasp the concept of "customer service" - he should have moved the rental boat ahead of us and then repositioned us before tending to the rental.
One big negative here is the large gathering of crows (close to 100) every evening before sunset. They perch on mast tops and spreaders and shrouds cawing loudly. A lesser number do the same in the morning. The cawing isn't so much of a problem as are the droppings!

Nice Place to Stay, 2011-11-21
Captain: , Cleveland (2073)

As reviews indicated: muffins and a paper at our boat by 7 am - nice touch :-) On site restaurant was excellent and reasonably priced. Restrooms/showers are somewhat dated but nice and clean. Loaner car can be used for an hour - long enough to go anywhere on the island.

Harris Teeter: do NOT use your GPS to find it as it will indicate the location in the middle of a marsh. Ask at marina or call the store. Lots of shops, restaurants by the pier but very busy on the Sunday afternoon we were there.

Definitely will return even though somewhat out of the way.

Had a bad experience here., 2011-11-18
Captain: , Deltaville, Va. (210)

While this marina has a lot of positive things going for it, which are detailed in the other reviews below, we must have caught them on a bad day.

First, when coming into the dock on an early Sunday morning, the dockhand took our bow line as we paralleled the dock, and pulled in hard tuning us sharply into the dock. We then hit hard which left a mark on the bow. I usually provide the dockhand with a spring line and it was our fault for not doing that but I was surprised that the employee wouldn't know not to snub the bowline. The dockhand was then going to get us something to remove the mark but never showed back up.

Next, after I changed my oil I asked where I could dispose of the used oil and was told to ask one of the employees on another dock. That employee was very nice and told me that he didn't have his key to the dump station but if I put the oil by the station gate he would take it in for me. When I took the oil to the gate I was approached by another employee who questioned what I was doing. I repeated the story of everyone I spoke to and the employee said that "I'll just have to go talk to them and see if all that is actually true". Really!?!?, I'm going to take the oil to the dump station and then lie about being told to leave it by the gate?

Maybe it's just me but getting pulled into the dock and marring the boat and then being called a liar just rubs me the wrong way. I know a lot of people like this marina and maybe we just had two bad experiences and caught them on a bad day.

Adequate and Isolated, 2011-11-13
Captain: , Ft. Pierce FL. (208)

Was a very nice marina, but their was nothing else there. Just one nice restaurant. I learned afterwards that they have a loaner car.

Great Marina, 2011-11-09
Captain: , Huron Ohio (547)

11/9/11 The staff is still the best and the courtesy car with a Harris Teeters and West Marine close make this marina hard to top. Delicious, large blueberry muffins with the newspaper this morning!

11/910 The best part of this marina is the staff - Chick is fantastic on getting your boat in and out safely with all the current and wind. He has trained his staff to be just as good. The fresh muffins and newspaper delivered every morning at 6:30 am are greatly appreciated. Nice to have staff in early to help you get off the dock at first light. They also will stay late to help you get in, if you are running late. Courtesy car is a plus and Harris Teeter is only 5 minute drive away.

Well Managed Marina, 2011-11-04
Captain: , Boston (232)

A large marina that is in very good condition with helpful dock staff. The morning muffins and newspaper delivered to our boat were a real treat!

Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (151)

Very impressed with the professionalism of the Dockmaster saw the boat's needs for proper dock in quite a current. Nice surprise with a paper and muffins in the morning

A wonderful oasis!, 2011-06-29
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (370)

We spent 3 June nights here and upon our arrival, Alfred, dockmaster of 20 years, was waiting at our slip to masterfully assist our docking. A nice morning touch was a newspaper and muffins delivered to our door. We covered the entire island save The Cloisters (no bike path and gated) covering 40 miles and most of the island. There are very safe bike paths to get you to any destination you wish. There's an on-site beauty shop, laundry, bar, restaurant, and pool. We very much look forward to our return and would rate this 5 GOLD stars.

Awesome Marina, 2011-05-30
Captain: , Orange Park, FL (171)

First time we ever stopped here. Should have stopped long ago. Long face dock, strong current, dock master knows what he is doing. This is Georgia!!! Clean bathrooms, nice pool, great restaurant.

Really First Class, 2011-05-15
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

Update: 5/15/11 Spent most of a week here getting repairs. People are still great (especially Mellisa) and very helpful and you still get muffins (yum) and a newspaper in the morning. However, when wind blows out of the SW and during max ebb, you will rock and roll for a while - either side of side-to dock. And, of course, when the wind is out of the west, you get the pung from the pulp plant (hey, it's Georgia). These are things they can't do anything about, so still 5 stars.
5/8/10 $2/ft $6/50amp First time here, but have often heard about it from other cruisers. Very nice side-to floating docks (like the mega-dock in Charleston, only smaller). Free WiFi, Cable, and courtesy car. Excellent restaurant on-site. Helpful and experienced dock staff. As mentioned, does have current, but that can be mitigated by arriving at slack :-0

Be Careful of the Black Rubber, 2011-05-10
Captain: , Charleston, SC (40)

Great place to stop but watch out for the black rubber rail on the dock - it leaves a streak on your boat should you get too close to it but it comes off. Docks are great otherwise and dockmmasters know how to get you away from the dock in the morning when current is really trucking.
Restaurant on site was good with a variety of entres. Facility is secure.

Perfect marina, 2011-04-25
Captain: , Savannah,GA (376)

Stayed there one night in March this year and returned with The Admiral and stayed 2 nights in April. Great marina , all the other reviews state the facts, great staff and fanastic food right at the docks.

Stayed here again in April 2011 and love this place. Only mistake we made was it was on Easter weekend and we tied to the outside dock that was rough from all the small boat traffic.

30-year anniversary..., 2011-04-23

I think the staff makes the difference and this one is five star all the way. The facilities and the loaner car are great but the staff is what earns the fifth star.

a great stop over, 2011-04-13
Captain: , Kilmarnock, VA (290)

Freindly and helpful. They have a loaner car that lets you get around town for provsioing or a good lunch. Car is available only during working hrs. Good onsite resturant.
Floating docks side tie and good power. Access is easy and straight forward.

Pleasant Stop & competent staff, 2011-04-07
Captain: , Essex, CT (1121)

Our first time here. Loved the morning muffins and paper! Courtesy bikes are great to take for a ride around the very "rideable" St. Simons area.
Coastal Kitchen, located in the marina complex was very good. Docks are in great shape and the location is charming.

Great stopping place..., 2011-03-25

Shining Star in the Golden Isles, 2011-02-20
Captain: , Cruising (112)

We feel like we have found a shining star in Georgia's Golden Isles. In nearly six years of cruising, Morningstar Marinas - Golden Isles is one of the friendliest marinas we have found with an expert staff who take great care with our vessel. It is reasonably priced with many amenities. From a tourist perspective, the area offers many interesting and beautiful places to explore.

Great Facility, Bathrooms Dirty, 2011-02-12
Captain: , Wilson, NY (432)

On 2/2 we got a message saying they had changed who cleaned their restrooms, so future boaters may not see the problems we did.

This is a very nice modern marina. We were tied on the outside (there was no traffic past so no wake problems). They fueled us right where we tied off.
We were disappointed in the bathrooms. Lots of old hair in the showers. Maybe cleaning is more frequest in season, but for such an upscale facility the cleanliness was not what we would expect.

Excellent stop over - awesome staff, 2011-02-01
Captain: , Dawsonville (30)

We've stopped here a number of times and the dockstaff always impresses with their detailed advice as to wind, tide and current (sometimes swift at this location). Melissa, Alfred and Chick are all excellent at line handling and docking assistance. Fuel is available anywhere along their face dock. Bikes and a free loaner car are available to visit the charming St. Simons island village. And quite notably, Coastal Kitchen, the restaurant at the head of the dock is the very best restaurant we've ever found at any marina up and down the eastern seaboard - fine cuisine, fine service and reasonable prices make this one of the best restaurants of many on this upscale island. Don't forget - fresh muffins and a newspaper are delivered to your boat every morning!

The nicest staff, 2010-12-28
Captain: , Detroit, MI (160)

We were late (very late, about 2 hours after dark) but the harbor master waited for us. He called us several times to be sure everything was okay and to offer advise on coming into the harbor. We got in so late that we didn't take advantage of any of the amenities, but will be back at another time.

Terrible current., 2010-12-15

Staff was also very rude to my wife for no apparant reason.

Great Food, Too, 2010-12-07
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (326)

All previous about the marina is spot on. In addition, the Southern Kitchen has superior eats and a lovely chef with unusual dinner, but if all else is marginal, their burger is to die for!

Captain: , Houston, Texas (164)

This is a spectacular marina and you will not be disappointed. They offer a FREE Morningstar Membership card that can be used for discounts on dockage and fuel at this marina and other Morningstar Marinas. Clean showers, swimming pool, great restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, on site, and courtesy car available. Daily newspaper and muffin delivery to all transient boats. The marina staff is truly professional and have great Southern hospitality, Alfred, Chris, Chick, and Melissa are fantastic and very knowledgeable! We look forward to visiting again soon. Sincerely, Bill and JoAnne ULTRA

Excellent Marina, 2010-06-14
Captain: , St. Simons Ilsland, GA (547)

Great stopover marina and they really cater to the transient boats of any size. Lot of tidal current, but excellent depth at all times. Restaurant and pool available. Courtesy car available for 1 hour usuage at no charge. St. Simons Island is a short bike ride or taxi away with more great restaurants that are possible to list. Take time to visit the village area on SSI while staying at Golden Isles Marina. Great staff available during daylight hours. Security at night.

Modern, well maintained marina with floating docks. Lots of current, but easy to get in and out. The dockmaster is one of the best in the business. Our only regret was that our schedule allowed for only one nights stay. We will be back.

This is a great stop off to see St. Simons Island. The staff are excellent, morning paper with danish, rides into town and if you ask for it they will help. Weather stop over, 2007-06-02
Captain: , Dayton, Ohio (3)

Very nice marina. We stopped here because Tropical Storm Barry. The docks are floating. They have 30/50 amp service and cable. The rate is $1.75 per foot. I found on my door step this morning a newspaer with 2 muffins. The staff is great, however they do like to handled all lines on the dock themselves. They said for insurance purposes. They have a security gate at night. The only thing I noticed was you have to walk a ways to the showers which are on the second floor of a condo type building. For pets, they have a dog area with poopy bags, but its a way out from the marina.
