Reviews for Middleport Canal Basin
Better than expected, 2016-09-04
Captain: , Elk Rapids (10)

Stayed 1 night. Wall near bridge in good shape but first 4 power pedietals are iffy. They worked for us but a big cruiser blew the breaker. The Basket Factory is open again, excellent place. Mr Bonds is right by bridge(former Carol's?) and does breakfast, lunch and dinner but we did not try it. Bathrooms good and clean but takes a long time to get hot water. Overall a good stop.

Quaint and hospitable Town - Friendly locals, 2016-08-16
Captain: , Willsboro Bay Marina (2401)

We spent on night on the South wall West of the Main street Lift Bridge. We walked around and went to the Library provinding open free wifi (no Wifi after library hours).

Went to Pony's Irish Bar they gave us graciously the password: Ponyswings1. There are two bench outside by the front entrance.

People are very friendly to boaters. Be advised to verify your fenders locations on the rought walls as there are steel attachment that may puncture your fenders.

Also the use of rubber hose inserted in your docklines may reduce chaffing from the rough cement.

Peaceful Night, Good Stop For Us, 2015-09-17
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1476)

We stopped for one night. It was raining and cold the day we arrived and the next day as we departed, so we didn't brave the conditions to check out the town, which was too bad. However, we did avail ourselves of the pumpout, which is located (hidden) in a blue/yellow big metal canal corp box next to the bridge master's house - have the bridge master open it up for you. The pumpout is a big manual bellows pump and works better than 99% of the automatic/electric pumpouts we've used. While you might get a sore arm pumping the bellows arm back and forth, it's worth it! Sometimes simpler really is better.

Peaceful Greenery, 2015-08-15
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (950)

Quiet place to tie up for the night - manicured grass, great if you have dogs. We had 30A but no water, but no problem. 2 Bathroom / showers at the Police Station - basic, but not very clean. They are unlocked so I suppose the condition you find them in are dependent on prior users. There is a bank with ATM (drive thru) if you need cash. They ask for at least $10 donation for a nite's stay, which is more than fair.

place to stop for the night. Right next to the wall is Peggy's Towpath Cafe. Great food at good prices. The showers are clean. Free elect. and water. June 2011

6/2/15. Everything the same except Peggy's CanalSide Cafe has unfortunately closed.

The voluntary fee must not work..., 2015-06-15
Captain: , Pinnacle, NC, USA (1340)

... as there was no hot water at 6 AM when I tried. But the town is quiet, compared to Clyde which is free but has no shower. Peggys is closed.

Small town, another nice free stop, 2014-09-17
Captain: , Key Largo (5330)

No shopping, close laundry, 3o amp and 15 amp plug on dock.
one bar, one restrant, Other one closed
Had to walk about a mile to get ice at the gas station south of here

There is a gas station two long blocks south, whrer you can get some supplies and ice.

Pick your Spot, 2014-08-24
Captain: , Huron,OH - Little River, SC (630)

Other reviewers have offered an accurate assesment of the facilities. However, from a desireability viewpoint, I offer the following :
On the south side, west of the bridge, move away from the lift bridge in order to avoid the municipal parking lot and tie up in a more park like setting.
The north side is less hectic, but is immseiately adjacent to the tow path.
East of the bridge on the north side are 5 electric dtands with 30 and 15 amp outlets, and a parl like setting.

Free wifi at the cofee shop, 2014-07-30
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Saturday, July 26, 2014
Middleport has a coffee shop with free wifi, Alternative Grounds that is a cafe, bakery and has hand dipped ice cream. Open Tuesday thru Saturday, closed Sunday & Monday. Pony's Irish Bar and the Towpath Cafe are also open. Showers and restrooms were clean. Pump out is manually operated, not electric.

Good stopover, 2014-07-20
Captain: , Sandusky, Ohio (392)

South wall west of the lift bridge has 10 power hook ups, but only three water faucets. A long reach from some of the docks, and a Y valve on the faucet would be handy to carry along. Two toilets/showers behind the Police station. Both toilets have a tendency to stop up, and may take a while until the problem is solved by the village. Quaint town with diners, bars, a very clean laundry. Picnic tables under trees on the dock make for good dining/socializing. Very good free wifi. East current with a west wind can make docking a problem. Donations accepted in a box by the heads.

Small Town with a Comfortable Dock, 2014-07-10
Captain: , Annapolis MD (258)

There is a nice stone wall to tie up to, but be aware that the cleats are spaced a little far a part. There is electric, water, WIFI, and shower facilities.

A Very Quiet Town!, 2013-07-27
Captain: , Britt, Ontario (691)

Eerily quiet! At 4 pm on a Saturday most shops are closed, almost no one on the streets. Docking is good along the wall with washrooms at the Police Station right next to the wall.

Good stop for the night for a donation, 2013-07-23
Captain: , Brisbane, Australia (399)

Nice place to tie up for the night for the price of a voluntary donation. Includes 30A electricity, bathrooms and showers. Shopping and restaurants are very limited. The Towpath was closed when we passed through.

ok, but...., 2012-09-09
Captain: , Louisville, KY (347)

Nice wall and facilities. But, if your taste runs to more than wings and burgers, Pony's is NOT the place to go. And the Towpath closes early, so plan on an early dinner.

Basket Factory closed in 2012, 2012-07-26
Captain: , Grand Island, NY (651)

Will be missed, hopefully Pony's will stay in business, best wings on the canal.

Watch the current if you are coming from the west, it is very strong between the walls, and if a west wind is blowing, docking can be difficult.

Quiet Stop, 2012-07-24
Captain: , Michigan City (349)

A quiet little town with electric, water and showers. Some pizza places and a bar plus a good reasonable family restaurant right next to the bridge. Dockage is free but donations are requested with a drop box outside the showers behind the police station.

Middleport, 2011-08-21
Captain: , Lake in The Hills, Illinois (542)

Nice quiet place to tie up for the night. Only a few choices for dinner but all were good and a good variety. The showers and bathroom are behind the police station. The closer to the lift bridge you are the closer to the facilities.

Simple stop not much but a good restuarants, laundry, post office, 2011-08-06
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

Found Good power on north wall east of Lift Bridge. Basket factory very good. Pony's Irish Pub excellent wings. several other eateries available but not tried. the coblestone church interesting example of the regional centric coblestone construction from the early 1800's.

Winner of the friendly villages on the canal, 2011-07-28
Captain: , Gulf Shores Alabama (748)

I have to say that of all the friendly and boater friendly villages on the canal, Middleport is my favorite. The north wall is a quiet tieup, but we were told that the power posts were originally wired with clothes dryer recepticles and they have never been changed out. Net of that is that they don't work for 30a recepticles. I asked a police officer how far it might be to a LP gas place and he said "too far to walk with a tank. I'll give you a ride". Nothing like a police escort to the propane shop. I felt like I had met Sheriff Andy Taylor. Go by the Police Office on the main street and ask Chief John Swick for an official Middleport Police Patch. Great advertising for the city.
Nice town and restaurnats. There is a clean and working laundrymat on main street (next to the police station) and a very nice Internet Cafe/coffee/sandwich shop right across the street. If you read about the Basket Factory, be aware that it is not a basket factory. It is a restaurant. We walked out to it only to find there are no baskets.

Middleport-good stop, 2011-07-01
Captain: , Stratford, CT (658)

Middleport is a quiet plesant stop with a laundramat a few hundred feet from the wall-closer than many marinas. Many stores and restaurants were closed Sunday and Monday-bummer!
Bathrooms could use a good cleaning.

Middleport on the Wall, 2010-09-25
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (745)

Middlep.ort on the wall just after the lift bridge is a welcome and safe stop after a long day on the Canal. A safe stop since the restrooms (public) are in back of the police station. The restrooms are not that clean but, are adequate. Good restaurants in easy walking distance and a good laundramat close by. And FREE is good.

Middleport Canal Basin, 2010-07-28
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (296)

Lots of room to tie up west of lift bridge with 8 30A power stands on south wall and 7 30A power stands on north wall. All have water available. Free pump out on north wall (get key from bridge operator). Wash rooms with showers. Dockage and all services are free, but contributions are suggested to town clerk around corner or into lock box at wash rooms.
