Reviews for Brewer Oxford Boat Yard and Marina
Poor communication but the best bathrooms on the bay!, 2017-09-07
Captain: , Cutter Marina (20)

Date of visit - Monday 28th August 2017.

We called at 9.30am in the morning to organize the same-day arrival of 5 sail boats whose plans had changed due to inclement weather. I was passed to 2 individuals, neither of which could help with slip assignments. They took my contacct info and assured I would get a callback when the dockmaster got in at 10.30am.

45 minutes before arrival at the marina at around 4.00pm we called on the phone and on channel 16 VHF and channel 9 VHF. 3 other boats also attempted this and not one boat received a response by VHF or phone.

The 1st boat in docked themselves at what they thought was a good slip and went in search of a living employee. There were none.

After 20 minutes of us circling outside the marina an employee appeared (he had been at the dentist) but did not know what slips we should use. Also, had no VHF radio so we were forced to communicate with him via the 1st boat in.

By this time all the other boats were arriving and trying to get slip assignments - to no avail.

Eventually another emplyee appeared (with no VHF radio) and we were relayed slip assignments. And of course, it was blowing a gale making docking a more time consuming process than usual.

But the bathrooms are amazing.

Management response:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Mark and I am sorry you experienced communications problems and were disappointed with your visit.

Normally non-holiday Mondays are very quiet days for us, and typically two people can handle the minimal transient traffic with time to spare for site maintenance and other activities.

On this particular Monday we had three people working, one of whom was on his first day of employment with us and was cutting the grass at the time of your arrival. Our marina manager (Jeff) was out on the docks assisting with tying up the first three boats, and received help from them to relay your slip assignment. It's true that the remaining dockhand had just returned from a dentist appointment (we all have those occasionally, don't we?) and although he was not yet up to speed with slip assignments, he was able to jump in and assist getting you all safely tied up.

We always try to staff based on the number of advance reservations, but sometimes circumstances conspire against our best efforts. In this case we were able to accommodate your same-day request for a group booking, but it was windy and we had two staff and a new hire to divide between 5 boats. Please visit us again and we'll do our best to give you a smoother arrival.

Friendly and quiet!, 2017-08-12
Captain: , Baltimore (80)

A very nice place to stay in Oxford - easy approach, friendly and helpful dock hands, and the best marina bathrooms I've seen anywhere! Lovely pool too, and we used the bikes to get around town. Not much in 'town' though - there's a little convenience store but it isn't well stocked.

Management response:
Thanks for visiting and taking time to write a review!

Outstanding Marina %u2013 Beautiful Location, 2017-07-24
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (470)

A really nice marina. Clean, large, new bathroom and shower facility; three private luxury hotel quality rooms. Very comfortable, large, new captain%u2019s lounge. Easy walk to town. Fuel dock is nicely positioned just inside the harbor entrance and easy to pull alongside. Excellent, well trained, and helpful dockhands. Zac did a great job helping us settle in. Very picturesque harbor. We look forward to our next opportunity to return to Brewer Oxford.

Management response:
Happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for taking the time to post a review!

Pleasant and very helpful with emergency repair, 2017-07-14
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (124)

For the third time since 2012, these fine folks have come through for us again on our annual sailing trip of the upper Bay. With only one day's notice, we tied up for a replacement of the forward toilet hose on our 42 foot sailboat. Job was done in two hours with no issues. G.M. Graham and S.M. Jason, Erik and our guy, Grant, were all great to work with, as usual. But I told them I hope I don't have to see them again next year.

[Older post.] For the second time in five years this very professional and long time staff has saved out summer sailing cruise with a "no notice," next day repair. And we are not from this area. This time it was the starter on our 20 year old boat. It was dead after a small fire in our engine room the day before. To the crew here our boat was a brand new boat. No problem that couldn't be solved. I want to commend the general manager and the service manager and their very knowledgable employees for getting the job done and getting it done right.

Management response:
Glad we were able to help!
All the best, Graham

unfriendly dockmaster, 2017-05-26
Captain: , Pagosa Springs (130)

Although the staff were exceptionally friendly the dockmaster was very rude complaining about how were were docking, the fuel we were getting and generally being rude to his customers and staff. Although we were only filling up our dinghy's tank our money spends the same as someone filling up on diesel. Im also still trying to figure out how their pump managed to get 7.2 gallons in a 6 gallon tank that wasnt empty yet. The dockmaster continued to argue with me about it saying my tank must have expanded. I wont be back and I caution people to be careful here especially if you are purchasing fuel.

Management response:
I'm disappointed to hear that you were not satisfied with your fueling experience.

Having spoke both with the dock staff and marina manager, it sounds like the fundamental question focuses on the accuracy of our fuel dispensers. As with all state licensed fuel retailers - both land and marine - our fueling system is regularly tested and inspected by licensed independent contractors and State employees from both Maryland Dept of Environment and Maryland Dept of Agriculture Weights & Measures. If there were problems with either over or under metering, I have no doubt we would have cited and been issued a repair order at the last inspection. Additionally, Federal procedures require us to take manual tank level readings morning and evening and correlate these with fuel sales and account for any discrepancies. Under-reading by 20% is not something that could go unnoticed!

I believe a more likely explanation for why 7.2 gallons fits in a "6 gallon" outboard motor tank is because there is a sizable air expansion space designed in to the top of the fuel tank. Most plastic tanks are embossed with a safe fill level line, and this is the point at which it contains the manufacturer's stated nominal capacity. Nearly all plastic fuel jugs can hold considerably more fuel if filled to the very top. e.g. my personal "5 gallon" jerry jugs hold nearly 6 gallons when topped off. Whether or not it is safe to fill them that much is not something I will comment on, but if our gas dispenser read 0.0 at the start of fueling and 7.2 at the end then I am very confident you did indeed get 7.2 gallons of gasoline into the container.

Best regards,
Graham Norbury

Wonderful experience, helpful staff. Exceptionally clean bathroom and shower suits, brand new. Near by provisions biking distance, limited choice and expensive. We were invited to opening sailing season picnic. Tom and Tracy Grass on Bucket List, Catalina 320

Very Nice, but . . ., 2017-05-13
Captain: , Stuart, FL (1019)

tlaw7 DORADO 05/12/2017
Everything about this Marina is very nice. Ryan was there to help us tie up. Facilities are clean and neat. Walk to restaurants and "town". Quiet and peaceful this time of year.

The missing star is due to the reservations system that Brewer has adopted. All reservations are filed through the Dockwa system. Due to the fact that the weather was going downhill, we decided to change our stay from two days to one day to take advantage of a weather window. Ryan apologized when he told us that there was seven-day cancelation policy and we would still be charged 50% of the second day. We elected to stay the extra day. I don't know whether Brewer selected this cancelation policy or it came with the package. It certainly is not customer oriented or customer friendly.

My only gripe about our stay.

Management response:
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about our facilities and cancellation policy. Your comments are most appreciated and have been passed on for discussion as we roll out and refine our company-wide policies.

I'm sorry the weather has not been so cooperative this weekend, but hope you are able to enjoy the remainder of the weekend.

Another high-quality Brewers marina, 2016-11-20
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (490)

Stayed here for a night in mid-October and were treated to a neat, clean marina in a neat, clean town. Very laid back and professional folks here and Brewers has kept the quality high here at this marina. Please keep on doing what you're doing.
See you in May,

Management response:
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you next spring!

Three days at Brewers, 2016-10-29
Captain: , Saint Leonard, MD (30)

This was only our second visit since taken over by Brewer; a major improvement in customer service over the previous management. We stayed here for three days to enjoy the ideal location for visiting the quaint town of Oxford and enjoying the good food at Robert Morris Inn. Upon arrival, dockmaster Ryan met us and skillfully assisted with our lines. The new bath/laundry facilities and the captain’s lounge are nothing short of luxurious. The docks are in decent repair, but very much showing their age. Plans are in the works for a total rebuild with new floating docks within the next two years. We’ll definitely be back for another visit.

Management response:
Thank you for the feedback. We are indeed working on plans for improved docks with larger, floating slips in the main marina area.

New Bathhouse, 2016-10-09
Captain: , Harvre de Grace, md (40)

stayed 1 night. staff was very helpful. Expensive. 2.50/ft electric extra. bathhouse is new and beautiful. bathrooms/showers are like a 4 star hotel. Walked to a restrurant-very nice.

Management response:
Thanks for visiting and taking the time to leave feedback. During the summer our rates are $2.25/ft plus electric. At the end of the season (once our pool closes) we do adjust the rates accordingly, but overall I believe we are competitive among other area marinas with comparable facilities.

Issues at marina, 2016-09-12
Captain: , Galesville, MD (10)

1. No hot water in the mens showers and only one womens shower had hot water.
2. One sink in the mens room was clogged and drained very slowly

Management response:
Thanks for letting us know that we have a plumbing problem. Was this at the old boatyard bathrooms or in the marina? Hopefully you were able to use one of the new showers at our clubhouse instead.

Great Marina, 2016-09-01
Captain: , North Charleston, SC (752)

This was our first time in Oxford and our first time in this marina. Everything was great. Apparently, they are building new bathhouses but we used the old ones. A little strange, but they worked fine.

Staff was friendly, there was a free party one night and we enjoyed the marina and the town.

Management response:
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. Not sure when you visited, but our new bath house has been open for a little over a month now - it's a shame you weren't able to see it because it is very different from the old one! Come back and visit again soon!

Marina Side Needs Work, 2016-08-31
Captain: , Tracys Landing, MD (422)

We took some Beantown friends to the Brewer%u2019s Oxford Marina this past weekend to watch the log canoe races. There%u2019s a lot to like about the marina. It%u2019s in a great location with a very attentive staff. Ashley gave us a friendly wave as we arrived on the marina side, helped us tie up, and even made sure our shore power connection was working. The young lady on the fuel dock as we departed on Sunday morning was equally helpful and patient. The new heads, with showers, conjure up images of a new spa bathroom at home. And the new lounge %u2013 with A/C, frig and a big screen TV - was wonderful, especially on a hot August weekend. But there%u2019s a lot of work to do on the docks. They seem unchanged since our first visit there (when it was Mears) 25+ years ago. Narrow fairways would make it difficult to dock many boats (we were side-to on C Dock), as the many empty slips would suggest. They had some of the smallest finger piers we%u2019ve seen. The pool, seemingly unchanged since our first visit, was well taken care of %u2013 the decking was well maintained but the railings looked like they had not been taken care of for quite a while (perhaps since Brewer purchased the marina from Mears in 2014). I would return for the staff, their service and the pool, but am not so sure about the docks. BTW, the log canoe races were excellent!

8/31/16 Update - Thanks for the quick response. Glad to hear that plans are in the making. I look forward to visiting once again.

Management response:
Thanks for the feedback! We've been pretty busy with repairs and upgrades since being acquired by Brewer in 2014. Our new clubhouse and bathrooms opened about a month ago, and over the past winter we had the pool drained and resurfaced. New furniture recently arrived for the deck, which if you remember what was there before, was long overdue! There's still more to do though, and as you rightly point out the docks need replacing. Plans are afoot, but as you might imagine, anything involving multiple government agencies, bulkhead replacement, dredging and a new dock layout requires considerable thought and engineering. We all wish it could happen overnight, but realistically it'll be a process spread over several years. Come see us again and check on progress!

Very Nice Folks., 2016-08-25
Captain: , Penobscot, ME (50)

We stayed on the boat yard side, a 5 min walk to the main office. Contact when approaching was easier in the cell phone than VHF. The Robert Morris Inn is a 10 min walk. Great food and cold beer.

Very helpful, 2016-08-10
Captain: , Long Beach Island, New Jersey (184)

Pulled in to Brewer for a single overnight. Needed to attach a new anchor line to chain....Service manager calls in his rigger Steve who was at my boat first thing in the morning (as promised) He was VERY experienced, knowledgable and enthusiastic ad he spliced in my new rode. We also wete driven to a vet back in St. Michaels where we had to leave our sick dog while cruising the Chesepeake. Excellent customer service!

Management response:
Thanks for visiting and taking the time to provide feedback.
Hope you pup makes a speedy recovery.

Great staff!, 2016-08-08
Captain: , Chesapeake Yacht Club (70)

We spent the weekend here (our 3rd visit). Although i was happy with the facilites in the past, i was blown away on this visit by the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. Even though the temps were in the 90's the staff was upbeat, worked quickly to respond to our needs and generally nice to be around. Keep up the good work!

Management response:
Thank you for being a repeat customer and taking the time to let us know how we are doing! Hope to see you again soon.

Wonderful stay in Oxford for a weekend getaway. All the staff at the marina were very helpful and eapecially Andrea with assisting us in securing lines to Ryan in the office helping us find a great place to dine as well as a thorough review of thr marina amenties. Your new clubhouse and restroom/ showers are gorgeous! We will be back! Thanks again

Vacation trip 2016, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Pasadena, MD (57)

We had an excellent stay at Brewers in Oxford, MD. It is one of our favorite stops on the eastern shore. Very customer friendly staff. We will return in the near future.

Nice Marina, Great Town, 2016-07-12
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (130)

This is our second stay at this Marina but have made multiple trips to Oxford over the years. The Marina crew are extremely helpful and friendly. Typical laid back Eastern Shore atmosphere too. The pool is nice but bath houses are primitive. We understand that they have built a new clubhouse that will have better facilities. There isn't much to do in Oxford but it is a great town to relax in with a few good local restaurants. Pope's Tavern in our opinion is the best and very reasonable for dinner.

Management response:
Thanks for visiting and taking the time to let us know how you found our facilities and staff. We are about a week away from having the new bathrooms and clubhouse open. Hopefully you were able to peek through the windows an get an idea what we're building.

Many thanks,

Great staff makes a difference, 2016-07-02
Captain: , New Orleans, LA (671)

This is our third visit to Brewer's and each time the staff has been outstandingly helpful. This time it was Ryan, the dock master, who helped us find a ride into Easton when we were short of time and couldn't find a taxi. A new clubhouse with upgraded bathrooms is complete and will much improve their facilities as soon as it passes final inspection. We are looking forward to another visit.

Management response:
Many thanks for visiting. Hope to see you again soon.

Excellent stay, 2016-05-31
Captain: , Rowayton, CT (199)

The dock staff could not have been more accommodating from the reception at the dock, fueling up and pump out to the general help and tips to see Oxford at its best. Thank you all for a delightful two night stay.

Nice dock master, but pricey for the condition, 2016-05-07
Captain: , Chattanooga (220)

We had a good stay here, but were underwhelmed by the shower and laundry facilities. Very primitive for $2.25/ foot offseason. Oxford is a fun stop. The Brewer Marina chain just bought this one and they have some work to do. Looks like they raised the price before they raised the amenities.

Management response:

Thanks for your feedback. We wholeheartedly agree that our showers need improving which is why we are constructing our new clubhouse with it's en-suite bathrooms. You probably noticed the new buildings during your visit? As with all construction projects, things tend to take a little longer than originally expected, but the facilities will be open in the near future. Hopefully you'll be able to come back and see them in a month or so?

Although we believe our rates are pretty competitive with nearby facilities, I would comment that we haven't raised the rates in a good number of years. The Brewer acquisition has however allowed us to actively invest in our infrastructure and make numerous capital improvements. Last year we lengthened the finger piers on I-dock and remodeled the marina office. This winter we completely drained, tiled and resurfaced our swimming pool. At present we are finishing the clubhouse and replacement of 260 feet of bulkhead around our Travelift. Numerous smaller repairs and improvements are made on a daily basis, but there is always more to do! :)

Enjoy your season!

Loved the marina, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Newport (490)

This marina has nice shower/bath facilities, laundry, free herbs growing all around, great BBQ facilities and a nice staff. Great boat store a stone's throw away with everything you could possibly need. The town is lovely, especially in the off season.

8/14/15 Visit, 2015-10-19
Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (460)

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. The staff was quite helpful & we didn't have any issues with depth or current with our 54' m/v. We rented bikes & rode into the lovely little town. Be sure to visit the 1700's pub - quite beautiful.

August 16th visit, 2015-08-18
Captain: , Deale, MD (20)

We stayed overnight and the next morning, and we were very happy with our experience. Jeff the dockmaster stayed late to help us into our slip and was, as were all the staff, very friendly and helpful. This was our first visit, but we'll definitiely be back.

Nice, Quaint, Friendly, Full Service Marina, 2015-07-27
Captain: , Sarasota, FL (270)

We're new to the Chesapeake, cruising up from Florida west coast. We chose Brewer's Oxford Marina over St. Michaels and were glad we did. Much quieter, quainter town and much, much less crowded. Transient rate was $2.25/foot/night. Ryan, the dockmaster, was totally helpful, friendly and "aimed to please". Marina was easy to find; entrance was easy with deep water approach and good dockside depths. Free continental breakfast, pool, block & cubed ice, snacks, ice cream on site. Wonderful restaurants nearby. Go to Schooner's waterside restaurant, a neat place within 2 blocks of marina; good food, good service, friendly people and full bar. Most other restaurants in town will pick you up at the marina for dining. Bikes available at marina. Showers, lavatories and laundry cleaned twice a day. Great place. We will return.

First Visit, Will Return, 2015-06-23
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (110)

As stated in earlier comments the docks are dated but are in good repair and fully functional. The grounds were visually stunning and very well maintained. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. We walked to town the first day, but rented bikes the second day for about a 20 minute ride to the other side of town. We loved this marina and will definetly return in the future. My only caution would be that the diesel fuel was pretty expensive.

Management response:
Thank you for the great review!

I have a suspicion the underlying reason for our fuel prices being higher than say Annapolis or Solomons is because of our location at the end of a long peninsular and the small size of our fuel tanks. Distributors give preferential pricing for high volume deliveries from their tractor-trailer tankers, but we can only accommodate smaller trucks such as you might see making home heating oil deliveries.

That said, there are ways of reducing the price you pay at our pumps:
- Our Brewer Preferred cards for seasonal customers is (summer slips and/or winter storage) provides a number of free transient nights and fuel discounts from $0.20-$0.40/gal.
- The Brewer Cruising Club card available for free after your first stay of the season at any Brewer facility offers 25% discount on future transient dockage and $0.05/gal fuel discount.

We look forward to seeing you again!

Customer service, 2015-06-17
Captain: , Hampton, Va (270)

Having spent many summers using Brewers marinas in New England, Brewers is now spreading its great customer service in the Chesapeake. Hope this expansions continues. Many thanks to the manager Ryan who went out of his way to help us in an emergency. Only down side is that the docks need major update. Dock crew was outstanding.

Management response:
Thank you for visiting and letting us know how you found the property. We are working on a number of infrastructure improvements (including bulkheads, docks, clubhouse) which we aim to roll out as permitting and funding allows.

Many thanks,

Exceptional Service by Exceptional People, 2014-10-07
Captain: , Hilton Head Island, SC (30)

Graham, Jason, Eric and Jerry worked as a finely tuned team to diagnose a problem I had with my diesel engine, source parts, and repair it within a 36 hour period. I was convinced my problem was more serious than it turned out to be. These people used their extensive knowledge and experience to help a cruiser 500 miles from his homeport. They did it in a most friendly, gracious and reassuring manner. Eric's technical skill and thorouhness will always be remembered.

Experienced, 2014-10-03
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

It is always refreshing to be met by someone who knows what to do with my lines whether I hand them the eye or the bitter end. We were met at the dock by the Harbormaster, Mark, who expertly handled our lines and got us settled. Yes, the docks are a bit dated but all is in good repair and in working order. The marina and boat yard next door were acquired by Brewer earlier this year and there us much evidence of updates bring done. We were told new transient docks are coming. With the boat yard right next door this is a good stop whether you want to enjoy the quiet of the marina, take a tour around Oxford, or need some repairs on your vessel. There was plenty of water for our 6 foot draft. We look forward to returning.

Nice Place, 2014-09-25
Captain: , Georgetown Yacht Basin (50)

We arrived, unknowingly, as cruisers on the same day as the NASS Race to Oxford. Brewer's fit us in. Found ourselves in the company of some very friendly racers, and enjoyed the evening. We ended up staying on a few days to check out the town and the sailing. Yes, funky showers, but clean and got the job done. Nice place and friendly.

Clean but "Dated" Facility, 2014-09-23
Captain: , Stuart FL (778)

We've seen / used a lot of showers this summer from VA to Cape Ann, MA, but nothing like this. A 6-plus-footer would hit his/her head on the entrance door way. A cable droops just inside. There's a 6" step up to the level on which stand 4 individual shower cubicles. Each has a low stool, 3 wall pegs and a phone booth-sized shower. Barely enough floor space to towel off / change clothes. Sky-lights made it feel like a sauna in late September; can't imagine what it's like trying to cool off in August. Finger piers wobbly; bulkhead rotted at waterline; piers need lots of work. Warm enough this day for a swim but pool closed for deck painting. No discount, though, on fee of $2.25/ft. Jeff the dockmaster is pleasant, helpful. Not much in Oxford but it remains a lovely little town. Marina not up to standards of other "Brewer" locations.

Management response:
Thank you for visiting us and taking the time to post your feedback.

You are correct that our marina showers are rather unique and than ideal in many ways. We are working on plans for a new clubhouse and bathrooms, but like anything involving permits and construction, it takes time to come together. We're still in our first year of Brewer ownership and the primary focus has been on cleaning and brightening up the aging infrastructure to give ourselves some breathing room to make the next steps.

Too bloody expensive, 2014-09-22

Really nothing to fault except the high price ($2.25/ft) with extra charges for every ammenity, e.g. power, laundry. The best reason to visit is to enjoy the vast array of client boats! Like put'n on a hat to go to Ascot -- fun.

Stayed here a week, at leat our Monk 36 did while we attended to bussinees at home in Maine. I would highly reccommend this marina for service, staff, amenities, and quaintness of the town of Oxford. Plan a few days as you will have lots to explore and many grear locations for eating. Pope's Pub for 50% discount on food 5-6. Dina try the ice cream at the Scottish Highland Creamery, but others rave about it.

Very nice stay 6-18-14, 2014-06-20
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (105)

We were greeted by friendly dockmaster Mark and his assistant Sonya who was very helpful at our arrival. The facilty is fine. I actually was amazed at the 2"x12"x16' boards on the dock that others has thought were dangerous. Must have been huge trees those boards came from. My opinion less joints to trip on. On F dock we had no problems. Good electricity, nice pool, showeres a bit odd but clean and so were the heads. I'd come back for sure..

Heart of Oxford, 2014-05-16
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (960)

This marina is perfect for dockage to enjoy the town of Oxford. Well kept property with pool, deck, bath, laundry very convenient. Staff very helpful and friendly. Fuel prices high. Easy walk to Schooners and Scottish Highland Creamery for the best homemade ice cream! A picture perfect town for walking or bike ride. We biked to The Masthead, a perfect sunset venue for dinner, but there are several good eateries in Oxford. Don't miss this stop on the Eastern shore.

Mears Oxford, 2013-11-20
Captain: , Deale Maryland (110)

Great location with friendly, helpfull staff. The light getting on toward sunset in Oxford is not to be missed. A walk to town and the one store for provisions is great fun. Resturants come and go with the years. A great place to visit!

Good location in Oxford, 2013-11-05
Captain: , Austin, TX (346)

This marina has a good location in Oxford. We stopped here a couple of years ago and again in October. Also picked up fuel and got a pump out. The staff was friendly. The wooden docks are a little tight and getting on in age. Used the pool on our summertime visit and it was nice. The showers are a bit rustic. Price seemed a little high but quess that goes with the location. A few restaurants but not all are open all the time. Had breaksfast and dinner at the Robert Morris Inn. There is a small market in Oxford and there was one arts and crafts place open. it has some nice things that are a cut above the usual. The Admiral is a big fan of the small glass trapozoids with sand and seashellls inside. Well done with bevelled edges on the glass and nice leaded corners. Oxford is a quite small, historic town if you are looking to escape.

Convenient Marina to Visit Oxford , 2013-11-01
Captain: , Mila, VA (70)

We were on the face dock opposite the Marina office. Easy in and out. Bikes are available and a great way to see the town and get around. Interesting town with lots to see. Several restaurants within walking distance. We were in Oxford for the Shields National Regatta, held at the Oxford Yacht Club. The marina worked out great for going to the ashore events as well as coming and going from the dock to go out to the race courses on the Choptank.

Great visit, 2013-10-29
Captain: , Herrington Harbour North (20)

Very happy with the service at Oxford Boatyard. Arrived off-season but still welcomed to the yard. Joan was very helpful in helping inform us on what was available now that we are off-season. Unfortunately the Creamery was closed but we still found plenty to do and see in this small town. We essentially had the B Dock runway pier to ourselves. Well worth visiting.

Great Historical Town, 2013-10-15
Captain: , Kings Creek Marina (766)

Nice place to walk around. We talked to the only gift shop owner in town, and a couple of folks on the street.

Simply a great working yard, 2013-10-11
Captain: , Bristol, RI (782)

As we were cruising the Chesapeake, we developed an electrical problem with our battery charging system. OBY was a boat yard with a great rep so we headed there. The yard manager, Graham was also the electrical person. He expertly diagnosed the issue and fixed it. It took a few days with ordering parts. Was only charged for actual time and felt we were treated extremely well. Great service, reasonable prices, great people. We were not charged for dockage while getting repairs. This yard provides A+ service. Thanks for fixing a complex problem well.

Just stopped for water and pump out, 2013-08-15
Captain: , Apollo Beach, FL (928)

We were anchored off the Strand for several days and just stopped here first thing in the morning for water and a pump out before heading to St. Michaels. Easy to get in and out, good bumpers on the pilings, and had lines on the dock so I didn't have to rig mine. Staff was great and they had a new pump out nozzle that was the cleanest and easiest to use that I have ever seen. Only cost $5!

dated but, a nice stay with a pool, 2013-08-14
Captain: , Colonial Beach (91)

we've stayed here before and come back because it's the only marina with a pool. it's definately showing its age. pool is a very nice option and they have great areas for your dogs to walk. dock is funky with the boards running lenght wise. the rubber boat rubs on the pilings were all torn off and the exposed screws did a number on my rub rail and fender board. the bathrooms were generally clean but, need some TLC. pool was awesome and clean. bikes are avail and we 'grabbed' a couple for two hour self tour. the town is absolutely charming and very visitor friendly.

Quirky, convenient, and Friendly, 2013-07-16
Captain: , Richmond (223)

My T-head was Z shaped which made it a challenge to tie up to, and dock boards were longitudual so there was a lot of cupping and warping, so watch your step and watch for nail heads. Electrical and plumbing runs up the pilings, so you must tie off around it all. Because of location, you'll likely get a better breeze than other marinas deeper in Town Creek, so was our choice for a hot summer overnight. The trade off is they are not as close to the half dozen shops in town, but is easily walked in 15 minutes. We walked in one day and dinghyed in and tied up at Hinckley's dinghy dock with permission. People are friendly and helpful. They have bikes, but, sadly, charge for use. Gas grills were well maintained, pool was small but nice, showers are clean, but unusual configuration with high step up and low ceilings. We had a very nice meal at the Robert Morris Inn, and enjoyed the low key community including the market and deli, the Treasure Chest, and the Highland Creamery for the best ice cream on the planet.

Nice Overnight Stay; Quaint Town, 2013-07-03
Captain: , Occoquan, VA (400)

We stayed one night with three other boats 45-52' in length. This is about max number of boats they can accomodate at this length. Agree that inside facing dock (C dock) is tough to maneuver out of if other boats--cannot pivot and will need to back out around others. If your boat is ~50' then you want to request D dock, especially the T-head. Other than that, it was an excellent stay and the Robert Morris Inn is in easy walking distance with excellent food. Having drinks in the historic sitting room was especially nice.

Enjoyable Stay, 2013-06-17
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (161)

We stayed here for three nights, June 8-10, 2013. The marina has fixed docks and we were assigned to a face dock with no cleats. This required use of pilings for mooring, which is fine, but the pilings pretty much all had an external devices like an electrical box, or telephone box, or water pipe, conduit, etc that made it dangerous and difficult to tie mooring lines onto. We wound up tying lines to the dock stringers, and this proved problematic with the tide swing. The dock hands were generally young and inexperienced, but willing to learn. The docks are old and of wood construction. There is tight maneuvering room on the inside face dock closest to the marina office, if other transient boats are also on the face dock. Mears is nicely located as the first marina that you come to off the Tred Avon River as you turn into the Creek to Oxford. We experienced minimum rock and roll at the dock. It is within easy walking distance of Schooner's Restaurant and downtown Oxford. The marina is very pet friendly with an excellent area to walk a dog. Overall, this was a nice stay in a family type marina.

Loved the town and Mears, 2013-05-26
Captain: , Athens, AL (641)

This was one of our favorite stops on the Chesapeake - quaint little town and some interesting sights to see like Cutts and Chase next door. Mears has nice showers/restrooms and two W/Ds. We bought neat little t-shirts for our grandkids in their ships store - they are black and white inside but change to color in the sun. The gkids loved them! Just a really nice stop to relax and enjoy peace and quiet for a couple of days.

Convenient stop, 2013-05-19
Captain: , Rockport, Texas (130)

Kim, the dockmaster was extremely helpful. We were here with another boat couple before we headed to Annapolis 15-16 May. We explored Oxford one day and we rented a car the next day. We visited St. Micheals by car...great visit. This marina is clean and close to the town. Not much there but a pleasant stop

Great Marina, 2013-05-18
Captain: , Annapolis (308)

We visit this marina often. Great staff, very accommodating! The facility is clean very close to the best of Oxford.....

First time Back since 2008, 2013-05-09
Captain: , Glenwood, MD (385)

It was great to be back to Mears Yacht Haven. We havent been here since 2008 when we chartered a sailboat out of Solomons Island. My wife and Dog and I got into the marina around 11:30 under cloudy skies. Access to the pier fairways was good, the docks were in good condition, if we were there later in the season we could have used the beautiul pooll they have overlooking Town Creek. Plenty of Bikes to rent, love the location as it is away from the town adn any craziness you may be able to find in the quaint town of Oxford. Everything is within easy walking distance, a few restaurants and a general store. The people are very freindly and the marina dog (Black Lab) Leroy was very freindly to our Westie Rocky. I will be back later in the season

Great overnight, 2013-04-03
Captain: , Kent Narrows MD (70)

We stop here several times each summer. Marina is older, but has the amenities you expect, pool, showers, WiFi. Oxford is a great town with good restaurants. The local restaurants will send a car to pick you up. Don't miss the Highland Creamery for the best ice-cream around. Schooners is a great spot for afternoon cocktails with a friendly regular crowd.

Good, convenient, older, 2012-11-06
Captain: , Roseville MN (398)

We stayed here in October; nice location - esp. the access to the Robert Morris Inn in town - a short walk. Older restrooms but fits into the old historical town.

Sat Out Sandy Here. Strong Docks!!, 2012-11-03
Captain: , Somers Point (460)

Came here to wait out Sandy. I am a large boat and I used seven lines tied to seven different pilings. Everything worked perfectly. Styrong docks. Staff was very helpful and courteous. Not a marina you want to spend a lot of time at but a great overnight stop for a transient.

Older docks, but a good marina, 2012-09-15
Captain: , Londontowne, MD (470)

We try to stay here about once per year, and our latest visit was very pleasant, as in the past. The docks themselves are fixed, not fancy, but they're very servicable and the dockmaster keeps up with repair projects as required. The pool is pleasant (one reason we prefer this marina) and was open during our recent visit AFTER Labor Day (2012). Local restaurants include Schooner's (we found good for lunch), the Robert Morris Inn, Laitidue 38, and Pope's Tavern -- and we have had excellent evening meals at all three over the various visits in the past. Schooner's and the Inn are within walking distance, and the other two restaurants will provide shuttle service. Not much in town, although there is a small general store and in any case it is very relaxing to just walk around and view the homes... but we always try to make a stop at the Mystery Loves Company bookstore on the main street.

Fantastic Service!, 2012-09-12
Captain: , East Dubuque, Il. (163)

We developed a charging problem and called as we approached Oxford. When we pulled in two dockhands met us to take lines as well as Graham the service manager. Within minutes he was in the bilge checking things out. The alternator was the culprit and it was soon off and on it's way. Not even two hours later a new one was in place and working.
Additionally both Graham and the service tech were very respectfull of the boat and it's cleanliness. No greasy footprints or smudges anywhere! My kind of place!
If your looking for a country club this isn't it. But it is well run, convenient, and has a service department and ships store that's second to none. I'll have no hesitation in returning if we're back in the Oxford area.

Nice stay at this marina., 2012-09-05
Captain: , Annapolis MD (70)

Stayed over the Labor day weekend. Friendly efficient dockhands, nice but small pool, small continental breakfast and coffee the next morning. Would stay here again if I return to Oxford.

Watch Time Go By, 2012-09-01
Captain: , Herrington Harbour South (328)

We spent last night here and would definitely come back again. Staff were friendly and helpful. Showers and restrooms were clean and OK. Pool is small but clean, refreshing and great view of the Trent Avno. WiFi is weak (although I have yet to find a marina where it comes in strong). Oxford is a great place to get away from it all.

Had a rigging inspection and half a dozen small items repaired as a result. Very Happy.
Well stocked ship's store, too.

Less than expected, 2012-08-26
Captain: , Annapolis MD (46)

After reading reviews here, we were looking forward to our stay at Mears. However, we found below average shower facilities and a small uninviting pool. The town of Oxford is a wonderful place to explore and our dinner at Robert Morris Inn was excellent. Next time, we will anchor out.

Mears Yacht Haven, 2012-08-21
Captain: , Horsham, PA (110)

We have stayed at Mears Yacht haven seeveral times. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Facilities are in good condition. Just a short walk to restaurants. Although some of the resyaurants will come pick you up. They have some marine supplies there. But next door at Oxford Boat yard there is a full marine store.

Mears Yacht haven - Aug 2012, 2012-08-14
Captain: , Great Oak Landing (77)

just stayed there on 8/11 and 8/12... while the facilities may be aging a little, the place is clean and well maintained. Docks are in good shape, power and cable TV are stable and reliable. Pool is clean and warm with nice view of Tred Avon River and Town Creek.
Dock hands and office manager very nice and accomodating. Good location directly across the town beach and easy walk into town. And Oxford is quite a gem not to missed! Overall, a very nice stay.

Captain: , bear, de (364)

A great place to visit. Great pool with an awesome view! Nice facilities. One of the nicest docklands we have ever met! Will be back. The best ice cream we have ever had is just steps away. Our first visit to Oxford will not be the last.

Nice small marina, 2012-06-30
Captain: , Clear Lake, TX (694)

This marina was a nice stay from arrival to departure. The facilities are older but generally in good shape. The pool, showers and boater lounge was clean. The docks are older fixed docks but in good shape. The pool only had a 3 umbrellas that were taken early in the day. A free continental breakfast is served on weekends. That along with free WIFI and free cable made this a desirous stop. Town is a leisurely short walk away with limited shopping but some nice restaurants and a good ice cream shop.Proximity to a major boatyard/service facility (Oxford Boatyard) next store adds to the marina.

Nice location and well protected, 2012-06-22
Captain: , Dataw Island, SC (290)

Spent a week here with a bow thruster issue and found marina and facilities excellent. Semi close if you enjoy walking but not a lot of support facilities in Oxford. Staff does a great job taking care of boaters and helping with problems.

Good marina, 2011-12-30
Captain: , San Francisco CA (1301)

Spent a night here to charge up batteries and use facilities. The tide almost caught our dinghy under the docks, but other than that mishap, it was a pleasant stay. Nice assistance in and out. Fuel dock is very convenient.

Good but tired ..., 2011-10-28
Captain: , Key Largo (152)

Mears staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful, but their is a "tired" feeling to the facilities ... just over the edge from being quaint. This was the off season (late October) so the town itself was also less that what I remembered ... but the yards seemed filled and the sailors happy ...

No frills but deep water and all the essentials, 2011-10-10
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (1344)

Founder John Mears has disappeared from the scene, but I know he'd be disappointed in the way this marina has been allowed to deteriorate. John took great pride in keeping everything yacht-tiddly and keeping his staff motivated.

Still, for our 6-foot draft Mears Yacht Haven offered an excellent experience: deep water, well-built (if old) piers, excellent 50-amp electric service with a genuine 240 volts, and adequate water pressure. And a very short walk to town and also to the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

And we noticed that the Robert Morris Inn is back open. We were not able to eat there but are wondering whether their crab cakes are still as good as they once were.

Sleepy Stop, 2011-09-21
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

$2/ft + $15 electric. Helpful dockhands, crabby dockmaster! The showers remind me of summer camp, dingy! The laundry was great 2 of each and only $1 and close by. Also convenient and well marked recycling. The best thing about this marina is its proximity to lovely Oxford. The town itself has no shops, a small market and also a small museum of local history. We missed the ice cream stop, but we heard raves about the unusual home made flavors.

Mears is an okay marina, 2011-09-01
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (195)

Wasn't a very good experience. The marina does not allow you to grill on your own boat and you have to use their grills in a mosquito infested area. Very unenjoyable. The staff was very nice though.

A classic marina remains one., 2011-08-12
Captain: , Yorktown, VA (79)

A good-sized pool and friendly staff justify five stars. Fixed docks are weathered wood in good shape. The restrooms were clean; be sure to close the outer door. A nice short walk into town.

Reasonable with nice pool and hospitable staff, 2011-06-20
Captain: , Delegal Marina (121)

The marina staff were very accomodating, and the pool and adjacent deck area were nice. However the showers were very moldy and unusually small. Nice laundry facility at reasonable price. Within short walking distance to town of Oxford and town beach. Great ice cream place about 10 minutes (walking) away. Not much in the way of shopping for provisions and most restaurants quite a distance away.

Safe and Secure, 2011-06-13
Captain: , Deale, MD (347)

Nice place to tie up for an evening. Well protected. Pleaseant and helpful staff. Nice to have the pool when the summer temps are up! Heads and showers are clean. Schooner's restaurant is within walking distance but is pretty basic bar fare and loud...nothing special. There is a new TEXMEX grill opened on Mill Street, but didn't have time to try it.

Docks need some work but very nice staff; Robert Morris Inn - excellent food and service, 2011-01-09
Captain: , Richmond, VA (10)

Docks need replacement in some areas where they're deteriorating. There was a big pile of wood there in October so perhaps they're doing repairs. There are also dozens of ducks who constantly befoul the dock and make a trip to the restrooms at night an adventure. Very nice personnel. Charge for use of bikes. Excellent food at the Robert Morris Inn. Beautiful little town

What else can we say but repeat what everyone else has said? Great staff, great views, great pool, great town. We love this place.

For those that have been here before, some sad news to pass along - both of Tom's dogs passed away this past winter. They were very much a fixture at the marina with their matching "please don't feed me" collars and will be missed.

A++ for Mears Yacht Haven!, 2010-08-16
Captain: , Edgewater, MD (140)

Very friendly to transient sailors. I only needed a slip for a few hours to clean up and see the town. Mears is well equipped, clean, friendly, and very affordable.

We stayed at Mears for 2 nights in mid August '09. Very nice & helpful staff, facilities were clean, the showers are not the nicest we've seen but way better than some. We topped off the fuel tanks and pumped the holding tank; the full Monty, unlike some pump-outs we've used, this one worked well. Nice pool and very convient to most everything in Oxford, would stay there agaain.

Very quiet, people were very nice and the pool was great.
The view from the pool was great, you could sit there and watch the boats pass from in the pool and you can see the sunset and sunrise, both were great.
The town was great to walk around, beautiful.

This is my home port and I love it so much that I drive 200 miles from my home in New Jersey to get there. It's pretty, peaceful, and the pool and nearby beach are really nice. The staff is extra accomodating, their are numerous full service facilities repairs facilities in town (Mear's only sells gas and diesel) and there are a few very good restaurants nearby.
