Reviews for Maximo Marina
(no longer) great marina - updated reviewed, 2016-09-04
Captain: , st petersburg, fl (124)

takes a long time to get down the channel, fuel dock has short hours, and good luck if someone will come out to take your money. the restaurant got chased off so now there is zero reason to try to get into this marine when there are so many better, easier, more accomodating options around. this is what happens when big conglomerates buy tidy once-lovey local places.

They are Great, 2016-05-16
Captain: , Annapolis (401)

This Marina was very helpful in every way. Great floating transient docks great prices, nice people working there. They have a tiny restaurant that has the best grouper sandwich on the Gulf Coast. The bathrooms are ok, 4 out of 5, old but clean. The Marina has a security guard and no security issues when you are here. Outside of the marina grounds it is dicey and not recommended to walk that area. We would definitely use Maximo again.

Nice staff, 2016-05-15
Captain: , Safety Harbor FL (950)

This review is old but want to add our opinion. We were in one of the new fixed slips on the west side, condo side for 3 months (12/14-2/15) while we completed our refit prior to going cruising full time. The staff was very nice to work with during our short stay. It was very convenient to have our car parked right behind our boat to make provisioning easy. They had a pump out station for every two boat slips, we understand they pump out each boat whether you are on board or not.
As with other reviews the bathrooms and laundry rooms were not in good shape but hopefully they are remodeled soon. The new floating dock had just completed inspection before we left.
If we returned to St Pete we would stay at this Marina again.

Decrepit, Filthy, Hazardous, 2016-04-04
Captain: , Durango, CO (280)

The staff at Maximo were friendly and helpful. We docked on the transient side tie of a nice new floating dock. One fixed dock was also just a couple of years old. The rest of the facilities, however, are ancient and woefully decrepit to the point of being hazardous. The covered boat slips are a shanty town threatening imminent collapse. A bad storm would turn the corrugated tin roofing into flying sheets of shrapnel. The bathrooms and laundry room were filthy. WiFi signal was strong, yet there was no bandwidth. The pump out station is in an awkward location for larger yachts, right next to seating at the Seafood Shack. This fish grill is a former bait shack that is just as decrepit as the rest of the facilities. Food sanitation is highly questionable, given the facilities and the flock of dependent pelicans sitting on the roof just a few feet over the fish cleaning station, awaiting the next load of carcasses tossed into the water.
Apparently, new ownership began rebuilding two years ago after many many years of neglect. The effort was limited to the one floating dock and one fixed dock. There was no active construction or repair in March 2016.

We were here for work at the attached boatyard, which is just a decrepit as the marina, but does have a travel lift and moves quite a few large yachts through bottom jobs and other repairs.

Quiet, calm, nice docks and electric -- but...., 2015-11-16
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

The marina itself is very good -- great docks and electric stands -- but the place is home to many derelect boats which gives you the sense you're at a marina where boats go to die. It's sad given the facilities. Wifi also is almost non-existent which should be easy to fix (and we were told they going to). Great little seafood shack at end of gas dock and handy location for shopping etc. All in all though -- I think I'd prefer a different stop next time.

Excellent Service, 2015-05-07
Captain: , St Petersburg, FL (65)

Had my boat hauled and some work done on the keel and repack my stuffing box. The whole process was easy, knowledgable staff, dropped the boat off and was ready on time - even took the extra step to clean it upon relaunch. Prices were reasonable on top. Highly recommend.

Just an OK marina, 2015-01-30
Captain: , Gregory, MI (60)

Stopped here for three nights. The marina is seriously dated. The docks are all fixed height and old. They are building a new floating dock, but, I would expect it is for permanents not transients. They had two head facilities, one for the women and one for the men. One shower in each and they were filthy. The dockmaster was great as was the resturant staff. I needed repairs on one of my engines and their service staff couldn't be bothered, said the had to much work and it would take weeks before they could look at it. There was a mechanic accross the street that started on it right away and got me going, a little pricey but that's boating.

Great Marina - Great Staff, 2014-11-20
Captain: , Winter Garden, Fl (2173)

We stopped here out of necessity - couldn't get across Tampa Bay due to high winds/waves. This is a very well protected marina with everything you need - fuel, pump out, restaurant, groceries, hardware store, etc. They are in the process of updating their docks - the new section is coming along and will be very nice when completed. The staff is accommodating and efficient - Brian knows what he's doing and is a great manager. We will return in the future.

2nd stop here, 2014-10-20
Captain: , Greenville TX (580)

We returned to Maximo after leaving there about 18 months before to begin our cruising. Most of the same folks were still there - a great group of people. Service dept is under new management but is the same people mostly. Docks need repairs, but the atmosphere makes up for that. Very close to good restaurant, West Marine and grocery. Their free Wifi wasn't working while here this time.

Seafood Shack, 2014-09-20
Captain: , Temple Terrace, FL (224)

Seafood Shack is on site, open Wed thru Sunday. Great food, fish market, and fun happy hour. Dont miss this spot. Professional and helpful dock staff. Fitness center, grocery, good restaurants, vet, hardware store, banks, liquor and bus all easy walk. Haul out and repair services on site. Regulars and transients alike appreciate this marina. Very protected from all wind directions. 30 min taxi ride to Tampa International Airport. Close to GIWW.

Loved this place!, 2014-07-23
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (70)

It is a little run down, but what a friendly staff and reasonable rates. And the seafood shack is an extra bonus. Laundry is only $1 too. Great place!!

great friendly place!, 2014-06-19
Captain: , Baton Rouge, LA (62)

located in Gulfport Fl area, Maximo's has fuel, slips and a seafood cafe with the bests grouper sandwich ever! we had AC work done by nearby MES-ask for Mike. all over wonderful experience!

Nice Friendly Marina, 2013-10-04
Captain: , Saint Petersburg (30)

This is a nice large marina with protected water. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Excellent access for large boats to fuel docks and with fuel at competitive prices.

The facilities are getting a little old but there are plans to upgrade them next year.

Unfortunately, the nearby West Marine store has closed. The Publix and several other stores and restaurants are still there. There is a drug store about two blocks away.

Off the beaten path, but a secure marina, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Louisiana (514)

Stayed here 2 weeks, mostly due to weather. Marina is showing its age, but manager says that the owners have plans to fix things up. Transient heads/showers are old, but functional. Biggest asset is Brian the manager, who is very helpful. He adjusted our dockage fees because of the tropical storm the second week we were here.
The local West Marine is scheduled to close July 15, 2013. A new West Marine store has opened in St Pete on Tyrone Blvd (not anywhere near this marina). Other stores are within 3 blocks - pizza, Italian restaurant, fast food, Bob Evans, IHOP, Publix, UPS store, hairdresser, etc, etc

Maximo Marina, 2013-04-22
Captain: , Houston, TX (523)

Funky little marina with excellent access to Publix and West Marine, but a bit of a hike to central St. Petersburg. Staff were very helpful, but we were tied up to the fuel dock for the night. Several live-aboards in the marina and they were all very friendly.

Karma - Bob and Ivy, 2013-02-27
Captain: , Miami (71)

This is was a very nice stop that was within walking distance of restaurants, Publix, West Marine, UPS store, and buses to downtown. The marina is a mixture of permanent and transient boaters. The dock has a great fresh seafood market that locals gather with newbies and share sea stories into the evenings. The management welcomes loopers and are very helpful. We pulled in for a few days and stayed two weeks. Brian Burns, the Marina Manager is friendly and happy to see everyone leave with only great things to say about this marina. We highly recommend this stop.

Quaint stop, 2013-01-29
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (654)

We were put on the end of the fuel dock, lots of help getting tied up. Close to town for anything you might need.

Friendly staff and great location, but..., 2013-01-05
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

You cannot beat the convienence of easy one block access to a West Marine, a Publix, and many other shoreside amentities. The Dockmaster Joe met us to handle our lines, and helped us with a pump-out and then on to our slip. He was very friendly and helpful.
However, the docks have seen better days. Serviciable but well used, fixed docks. It is not a place I would stay too long, but a terrific stop to provision, do laundry, and other errands.

Great Place, 2012-12-24
Captain: , Reedville, VA (688)

We spent three days here waiting out a cold front. Although the winds were blowing 20/25, we barely felt a thing. Great protection. Took advantage of the very nearby Publix and West Marine stores. If you have pet issues, the vet hospital is even closer. Couldn't ask for a better staff. The fresh seafood stand just reopened with not only seafood but barbecue ribs to die for.

BEST KEPT SECRET ON THE W COAST OF FL., 2012-08-29
Captain: , ST. PETERSBURG, FL (10)

AS A PROFESSIONAL DELIVERY CAPTAIN, I WISH I COULD FIND A MARINA LIKE THIS EVERYWHERE, BUT I DON'T. AS A TRANSIENT, TO HAVE SUCH THINGS AS A GROCERY STORE, WEST MARINE, NUMEROUS RESTERAUNTS, ETC., ALL IN VERY SHORT WALKING DISTANCE IS A GODSEND. COMBINED WITH A PROFFESIONAL & COURTIOUS STAFF, AND A 1ST RATE FULL SERVICE BOAT YARD, I CAN'T THINK OF ANYPLACE WITH SO MUCH TO OFFER. IT IS CONVIENTLY LOCATED ON BOCA CIEGA BAY, JUST OFF THE ICW IN ST. PETERSBURG WHICH IS A GOOD JUMPING OFF POINT FOR DESTINATIONS NORTH OR SOUTH. A GREAT PLACE TO BE!

West Coast Finest Marina, 2012-08-28
Captain: , Riviera Dunes (10)

Top shelf staff on hand with 24 hour security. Less than 500 yards to Publix, West Marine, UPS store and several great places to eat. The Marina also has a service yard that can haul yachts up to 55 tons. At a low tide the bay/enterance is 6'. Covered slips are ideal for years round rentals or a great place to work on your boat while traveling to your next port. Top Shelf Marina and staff

A pleasent surprise, 2012-03-10
Captain: , Jacksonville, Fl (525)

It may not be luxurious but a pleasent surprise. We had to replace both of our battery banks. The marina ordered the batteries from Interstate Batteries and did not add ANYTHING to the price. This included having one of their men deliver the batteries to our slip and haul away the old ones.
If you have a sick animal aboard there is a vets office within one block of the marina.
Publix, West Marine, Chinese and Italian resturants, and Papa Johns are all an easy stroll away.
This is one of the most protected marinas I have ever seen. If you are looking for a place to hunker down during some really bad weather, then this is it.

Convenient for Service - Great Price for Florida, 2012-01-20
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4015)

Transient dockage at $1/foot is low, low price for Florida, and for that price you cannot expect a 5 star marina. It is worthy of a stop - convenient to grocery and West Marine, solid, but old fixed docks, very protected harbor, helpful staff, quiet, but forget the restrooms and showers.

Great Location, 2011-11-26
Captain: , Shell point, Fl (190)

The marina staff was especially nice. Very close to Publix and West Marine. The marina had showers and laundry and was very close to haul-out and engine repair facilities. The repair place was very helpful and understanding. Great stay.

Location, Location, 2011-11-03
Captain: , St. Augustine, Florida (246)

This marina had its day and could have it again if the economy returns, the beauty of its location is all the great stuff in a short walking distance, Publix, West Marine, restaurants ... The prices are more than reasonable, $1/ft 10/11, people are nice and it even has a seafood hut on the docks. If you need frills this is not the place, just protected dockage at a fair price.

Maximo Marina, 2011-05-31
Captain: , Wickford, RI (1637)

Last visited here two years ago and it hasn't changed much (even got the same slip). Rates are good and staff very nice. Docks are showing their age. West Marine and groceries very close by. Long run in from the GICW.

Good people, 2009-05-28
Captain: , Tampa Bay (322)

Good place specially if you need help - great service people
