Reviews for Market Square
Could be better!, 2016-08-16
Captain: , Fredericton, NB (70)

If conditions are calm, you can tie here to wait for slack, but be warned that it can be very rough and rolly. Do not plan to spend the night here! There are times when you cannot leave your boat, in order to keep an eye on fenders or boats rafted to you. Watch the water depth. Some great restaurants and shopping there. Can fill empty growlers just a few minutes walk.

A place to wait for the Reversing Falls, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Cassiopea A (507)

In settled weather, it's not as bad as it sounds. The space is small--it was just large enough to turn my 32 foot boat around. The floats are marked with depth at low water.

The location is right in the heart of downtown Saint John, and there are crowds of people strolling through and looking at your boat. I had a nice chat with a passerby, but, frankly, I would not feel entirely comfortable leaving my boat here unattended. But if you do, this is the start of the Harbour Passage, a walking trail that leads along the shore of the river to the Reversing Falls, so you can take a good look at the rapids at full flow. Not recommended if this is your first time through!

Market Slip needs a breakwater, 2015-01-31

07/13/14 - Great location, downtown Saint John, trying to walk on their substantial floating dock is hazardous to your health. There is no alternative dockage before traversing the falls.

Nice location but bad protection, 2013-08-09
Captain: , Fredericton (275)

While it is nice to be able to stop here and wait for the tides to change, the protection at the wharf is terrible. I wouldn't want to spend a night here.

There are great restaurants and facilities within a close walking distrance.

Market Square Boat Slip, 2009-11-20
Captain: , St. Andrews, New Brunswick (435)

This slip is generally a holding spot where boats tie up to await “slack tide” to make a run through the Reversing Falls just upriver. While tied up you will be quite exposed to much wave action and weather coming in from the harbour. You will also experience the highest tides in the world… over 20 from low to high! There is not a lot of space so expect to raft or be rafted to while there if it a busy time of year, during the summer months. Since you may be there for several hours, or even overnight, take a walk through historic Saint John. It is Canada’s oldest incorporated city. You will be tied alongside the Saint John Hilton Hotel. It is connected via underground and aboveground pedways to dozens of small and large shops selling everything from crafts to books to antiques and high fashion. Or take a walk up King Street, Canada’s steepest main street. It is lined with art studios and hand craft shops. There are several banks if you need to get funds to make purchases. At the top of King street is King Square, which is layed out in the shape of a Union Jack, in tribute to the city’s “Loyalist Heritage”. If you don’t feel inclined to walk that far, take a walk back through time by visiting the NB Museum located in Market Square itself. It is built using the facades of old spice warehouses, dating from the days of the Clipper trade ships. The museum has a great display of the maritime history of Saint John, home of the Marco Polo, once the fastest ship in the world.
