Reviews for Marina Pescaderia
Five Star Marina with Top-notch Service, 2017-07-03
Captain: , Edinboro, Pa (50)

This was our first stop in Puerto Rico, coming from the DR, and we were greeted by friendly and helpful line handlers in addition to being personally welcomed by Jose, the owner/manager of the marina. Checking into customs was a breeze because we were able to rent a car for $35/day directly from the marina and drive to Mayaguez customs with Jose's helpful directions. All the employees continued to go above and beyond our expectations of feeling welcome and safe throughout our entire stay. Jose even graciously printed out several documents when I asked where I could find a public library for work, saving me a lot of time and stress. We cannot thank Jose and the staff enough for maintaining this first-class establishment!

Great Marina, 2017-06-23
Captain: , Herring Bay (60)

Excellent place to move to or arrive from the DR. Also a good place to leave the boat and drive around the Island. The marina has cars for rent on site at a very good rate. Jose will do everything he can to help you, even after you leave the marina and need anything while in Pto Rico.

Great Launch Point, 2017-06-15
Captain: , Oregon (386)

We stayed here before heading to Samana. The entrance is a little narrow but the charts (Garmin) are spot on. A great fuel stop, but really, a great place to spend time. Jose (the Owner/Manager) is a wonderful host. We stayed two nights waiting for weather and found the restaraunt on site very nice, the friendliness of the people terrific, and overall the feel was safe and "homey". Would be a place we would stop again.

Can't say enough good things about this place, 2017-05-19
Captain: , Yorktown, VA (76)

Small but VERY well run little marina. Jose (the owner) is downright aggressive about being helpful with just about any marine or shore-bound service you may need. Easy approach following private ATONS which do not appear on charts. Major US shopping chains (like Walmart, Home Depot, etc.) are a short drive away. Cars are $35 a day, delivered to the marina. Very good fuel prices. We received excellent, dockside deisel, outboard and marine air conditioning services. Quaint local resturaunts abound all over the place and its pretty quiet here too. You just can't do much better.

Great stop after the Mona , 2017-04-17
Captain: , St Petersburg, FL (120)

After a long night from Samana, the marina was a welcome sight. You can anchor and use the facilities as well, but be warned - this is a working busy fishing village - there are people coming and going in all sorts of vessels. The marina is a great option. Solid well maintained docks; fuel, restaurant and bar - laundry is available, but the laundry is open to the public; don't think because you're paying in the marina that it should make a difference! You'll be waiting in line with 1/2 the town. Good security and the staff is top notch!! Jose is a fine host and goes above and beyond for his guests. We will be back.

Great group of people!!!!, 2017-02-18
Captain: , Scottsdale (421)

After passage from Turks and Caicos, we stopped in for a couple of nights before moving on to the east end of PR where we planned to keep the boat for a month while heading back to the US. There were several reasons we changed our minds and kept our boat here instead of moving on.

The town of Puerto Real and its people are very friendly and nearly everyone speaks at least a little English (the younger people are very good). Anywhere we ate, the food was very good. There is a fresh fish market at the marina with reasonable prices (the lobster was fantastic). Twin Electric, also at the marina, has a fantastic office manager Maria, with excellent English who can take care of many repair issues or find someone who can.

We rented one of the cars there on two occasions to sightsee, provision at Wal-Mart and have our 10# propane tank filled for $6 nearby. Insurance is only $20/day for full coverage.

Jose, the owner of the marina, is simply fantastic. If he is not at the marina, he always answers his cell phone and is willing to help in any way. We needed our sailbag zipper replaced and Jose had an excellent choice there the next day. One working day later, the sailbag was back exactly at noon as promised and sewn professionally.

We needed to get to the airport in San Juan for our trip home. Jose arranged for a marina employee to drive us three hours to the airport for $100 total.

If our insurance allowed us to keep the boat in the Caribbean during the hurricane season, this would be the place to use as a base. The security guard starts at 5 and walks the property until the marina opens up again in the morning.

This is a very safe and quiet marina with good tasting water (high pressure) and reliable electric service.

Easy fuel stop, 2017-02-16
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (148)

We only stopped for fuel. The approach was easy, plenty of room around the fuel dock, staff was pleasant, and manager (owner?) graciously let us stayed tied up for a bit while we sorted immigration and customs.

Do note that the fuel dock pilings do not rise above the level of the dock. For a boat with significant bow overhang, it would be possible to take out one of the supports for the fuel dock office roof.

Great Marina!, 2017-02-03
Captain: , Poquoson, VA (124)

Wow. I could go on forever about how wonderful this marina is. Jose is so incredibly helpful. Marina is well protected, though somewhat open to the west. But, even when we had a rare west blow, it wasn't bad. There is excellent security walking the docks at night, and locking gates on the piers. Jose has a list of 'must do' things in Puerto Rico and we did most of them. Water pressure is unreal on the docks. Be careful, it's like a pressure washer! Three rental cars from Target Rental are kept on site which the marina staff can rent to you. They are usually $29/day. We stayed here for five weeks and used this as a base for exploring the island by car feeling very safe leaving our 40 ft catamaran there. We had several repair issues come up that Jose was able to help us sort out. We needed two links cut off of our chain, so I asked him if he knew anyone who had bolt cutters. He had a guy come down the dock to our boat with a grinder who made quick work of it. He wouldn't let us pay. We decided to get rid of some folding bikes that we'd been carrying around for four years and only used once or twice. He sold them for us, crediting our card after we had left.

Restrooms are nice and well kept. Restaurant on site is very good, open for dinner Tues thru Sun and lunch on the weekends. If you hear a guy using a weird squeaky toy middays, he is telling you that his homemade empanadas are available for sale. Good and cheap. Shopping: not much within walking distance. Small colmado across the street with very limited selection, a small supermarket about a half a mile away if you turn right going out. There is a bakery with a sandwich shop about ten minutes walk if you take a left on the way out. There is not much going in the town. Two excellent grocery stores within driving distance.

Our favorite marina in all of Puerto Rico, 2017-01-22
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (50)

We came into the marina after a long 49 hour crossing from Provo. Jose and crew welcomed us right off. We spent a week in this quaint fishing village and what a great first impression for the friendliness of the people of the PR! The restaurant at the marina is excellent, diesel is cheap, grocery store walking distance and the bakery down the road had the best and cheapest breakfast in PR. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful place, Jose and his crew.

A great anchorage! Jose at the marina is great!

Another days in paradise, 2016-09-09
Captain: , Sete, France (10)

If you're a "2000 boats crowded marina" 's fan, you could be a little disappointed here.
First fishing settlement of the island, the bay is very well protected and your boat will be safe. It's so beautiful there : friendly people, painted houses with wooden pier, pelican and fregatas.
Puerto Real's Marina Pescaderia is the most friendly human size well equipped marina in Puerto Rico.
Concrete pier, nice wifi, water, electric, showers, gas station, dump station,...,everything you need for boats and boaters -even car rental- can be find thru the office or at the shops in or close to the marina.
And what about restaurants, fishes, socialization and the Real PuertoRican way of Life !!
The whole package with smiling faces and fair price.
Going either West or East, Marina Pescaderia is a "Caribbean Top Five" stop for us.
Just one word about the cons : Let's forecast a few more time than usual as you won't be able to leave this paradise place without a last glance.

Great marina and restaurant, 2016-06-25
Captain: , Hingham, MA (1079)

The owner of this marina is very professional and organized - he ensured that everything was ready for the arrival of our group of 5 boats. This is a very nice marina to stop at and rent a car to provision. About 20 minutes away (by car) is every store you can think of - including a Sams Club. The marina itself is nice and the restaurnat had the best food that I have had in a very long time. The chef, Nelly, is very talented.
The depths were a bit more shallow at low tide then listed (we bumped in mud in the fairway and we only draw 5'). I wasn't thrilled with having to pay $5/day for water, but we were aware of this before we got there (thanks to other Active Captain reviews).

Management response:
Great you guys had a good time and thaks for the great review. Sorry I couldn't help you more but I was out of the country during your visit. Based on your review we dropped down our water prices for our transient community. Also, sorry to hear about you bumping in the mud on the fairway on a 5 ft draft vessel. We regularly handle 6-7 foot draft vessels, and have received up to 8 ft draft vessels, without any such happenings. At the end of our docks we have anywhere from 8-9 feet depths. Next time we'll make sure you get a more adequate slip for your draft requirements. Thanks for your visit.

We are. 40 foot sailboat and diverted here rather than south coast PR when the wind shifted dead ahead. Easy entry very sheltered in a low key pleasant fishing village so different from the resorts. $1.22/ft good laundry good car rental at about $30/day plus insurance if you need it, good restaurant to left of marina with yellow rails as you look at it from sea and Tu Gusto also good on site bar restaurant.

We are a 47 foot sailboat, 6 foot draft, 66 foot air draft. Easy entrance to bay and marina. Great fuel dock. Stern in recommended, short cement finger docks. Great restaurant at head of docks, nice bakery a short walk away. Small chandlery across the street. Nice, clean showers. Car rentals on site. Good place to be, friendly staff. Had our fuel polished there on site, tanks cleaned by Twin Electronics, great job.

If you need better service than is provided here, you need to die and go upstairs. Jose bends over backwards to accommodate visitors. From stopping his regatta work to help us, to being an ambassador for P.R., to being the best tour guide you will find. The onsite restaurant, fresh fish market, laundry and showers are first rate. The best is having an onsite electric, electronics and boat system repair with Twin Electrics, 787-851-8825. They are totally fair and their work superb. This is a must stop on our return from the V.I.'s.

We were planning on anchoring in Mayaguez when entering Puerto Rico, but our windlass wasn't working, so we called Jose at 6 p.m., and was offered to tie up to the fuel dock since no slips were available. I called him back as we entered the bay at 9 p.m., and he sent the security guard out to help us tie up. What service! And... the next morning at 8 a.m., he had arranged for the Twin Electronics guys to come to the boat to fix the windlass. It was a simple fix and quickly performed. The staff was so helpful and friendly! The next day, although there was limited space, Jose (the owner) had boats moved around to find a slip for us. We ended up staying 3 nights. They arranged for a driver to take us into Mayaguez to Sam's and Walmart for only 30 dollars total (and he waiting for us the entire time!). Water is free! The marina is safe. We'd definitely stop again.

I also anchored out but used this facility. Very well kept, gated with a guard at night. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. They helped us rent a car, and there was every sort of store within 30-40 minutes. Even saw Star Wars in a movie theater after reprovisioning at Sams Club next door. No real town here, so a car ($30/day) was a must if shopping.
Fuel was $2.03/gallon. Wow. Fuel dock in line with prevailing winds, so easy access.
A very positive experiece.

Wonderful facilities and marina staff, 2015-12-11
Captain: , Newport (490)

This marina has it all: water for $5/day, power inclluded in slip rental, fuel at a good value, a washer/dryer, and an owner (Jose Mendez) who is a great host. There is a wonderful restaurant on site, A Tu Gusto; truly a hidden gem. There is also a fish market, fishing equipment shop, and dive shop on premise. Across the street is a marine parts store with decent inventory. Jose also gave us directions to a local bakery/cafe for breakfast, lunch and essential groceries. It was fabulous as well! The only caution is the depth at low tide (no moon) is five feet. This is easily managed to enjoy such a great marina!

Management response:
Great you guys had a good time and thanks for the great review. Based on your review we dropped down our water prices for our transient community. Regarding your depth worries, we regularly handle 6-7 foot draft vessels, and have received up to 8 ft draft vessels, without any problems at all. At the end of our docks we have anywhere from 8-9 feet depths. Next time we'll make sure you get a more adequate slip for your draft requirements. We spent 4 nights here (5/21-24/15) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Jose and his staff made us feel welcome and provided much assistance & information while we used our time here to explore the west and south coasts by rent car. The marina has security gates on all docks and a security guard at night. There is a great restaurant, A Tu Gusto, on site as well as a great fresh fish market. Several big grocery stores are 15 min away by car. Good bakery less than a mile away. Marina is in a protected bay with many local fishing boats based here. Will stay here again on our way back west.

Jose and staff were accommodating. Top notch! great price on diesel. Free water for guests. convenience store, tackle shop, bar & restaurant on site. Jose arranged for driver to Customs and run errands. he spent 20 min going over the tourist map making recommendations. note: Very difficult anchorage in the bay in high winds which seem daily. anchor outside or rent a slip.

Unbelievable gem of a marina, 2015-03-29
Captain: , Hampton, VA (2573)

Although we anchored out, we used this marina as our base. Lots of transients coming in for the night and to buy fuel which was 3.08/gal on 3/30/15.

Jose and crew make everyone welcome. Good stores on site, and just across the street. Marina truck for rent at $25/day. on site Resturant/bar is fun. Another good family resturant 1/2 block to the left on exiting the marina. Decent wifi. Washer and dryer

Actually can't think of a negative aspect. If they have room definitely use the marina instead of anchoring out! Most of the harbor bottom is very soft mud.

A happy place.

Safe marina.Staff very friendly. A lot of facilities inside or near the marina. Not expensive : free water, electricity costs are ridiculous, 1.2$/ft for catamaran; 1$/washing machine; A lot of restaurants, bar shipshandler, hardware, supermarket, engine and electrician techniciian, diving and fishing store in the area. A local taxi can drive you aty Mayaguez for custom clearance or at the big mall for renting a car. I'm not used to stop at a marina, but I'll stop again if all marinas are like this one.

Came for a week, stayed a month!, 2015-01-30
Captain: , On Board mv Seamantha (130)

Arrived Marina Pescaderia in Puerto Real after a night crossing of the Mona from the DR. Stayed mid-Decemeber 2014 to mid-January 2015.

This is one of those classic cases of falling in love with a marina and the surrounding area and staying much longer than we planned!

To start, the docks are fixed fingers, but in great condidtion. With only a two foot tide and no swell, this was not a problem. The marina is in a bay and well protected from the wind from all directions except west. West winds not often seen in these parts! Even on the days when we had 20knts gusting 30knts, the chop was light. Our bow was secured to very strong pilings. Electric was a stable power outs. The marina was well maintained, with clean modern bathrooms and one washer/dryer.

The owner, Jose Mendez, couldn't have been more helpful. Called around for the cheapest fuel price when we needed deisel so that he could beat it. We paid $2.75/gal. Spent an hour with us when we arrived to reveiw some touring options and continued to help us during the whole month at his marina.

Popular Car Rental picked us up when we needed a car. Cost was $215/wk plus insurance. We toured the whole western end and central portion of PR, plus did an overnighter to Old San Juan. Driving to beach areas, heading up in to the mountains, visiting towns and various sights kept us very occupied for most of the month. We discovered what a charming country Puerto Rico is.

Puerto Real is a fishing village. Every morning, a dozen or so small fishing boats headed off for the day's catch. Lobster, octopus, conch, red snapper, grouper and several local varieties were available to us six days a week. One of the fish markets was located right in the marina and Venessa always greeted us with a smile. Everything we bought was fresh caught that day.

On sight at the marina, we enjoyed Tapas and cocktails at Vaiven. Owner Javier is a great guy and the tapas menu has many different options, all prepared fresh daily. Drink prices were reasonable and portions generous. Just around the corner from the marina, in Puerto Real, was Brisas del Mar, a family owned fish restaurant open for lunch and dinner most days. It was an excellent place to introduce us to Puerto Rican food especially Mofongo!

Marina Pescaderia was one of those destinations where you really feel like family after awhile. Even after a month, we were sad to leave!

Best Fuel price in the Caribbean, 2014-05-11
Captain: , London (709)

The owner of the marina (Jose) is the most helpful person you could wish to meet and will help you with any situation.
The docks are fixed concrete (new) and for larger boats med moor is the norm with very strong posts to moor the bow of the boat.

The dock rate decreases for longer stays, there is a weekly then a monthly then a multiple month rate. We stayed for two months and got the mutiple month rate $13/ft/month. We left the boat for a month and flew home, the marina is very safe.

The price of fuel on the dock was quoted as $4.30 gallon but we were charged $3.85 gallon as we bought 1000 gallons Jose will ring around and get the best price available then beat it by 5 cents.

There is not much to do in Cabo Roco but car rental from Popular Bank, yes Bank will give you access to the whole island and there is a lot to see and do. They will pick you up and return you to the marina and their rates are good ($60/day for a 4 door Jeep wrangler 2013)
This marina is a gem and should not missed if you are passing PR.
There's a guy called Harry who comes to the marina every day and will take you to the stores and anywhere locally for a small donation to cover his costs, he is very helpful, look for his green Ford truck.

Management response:
Greetings! Based on yours and others reviews we now have rental cars right there at the marina for our transient community convenience. Cars are brand new and run for $29.95 per 24 hr period plus taxes and insurance (if selected). Hope to see you back soon.

Exellent marina to arrive to PR, 2014-01-20
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (132)

We got there on Dec-19-13. Very helpful staff. The owner Jose Mendez will greet you personally, he spend over an hour with us guiding us to Puerto Rico, we used much of his advice while visiting this wonderful island, and everything resulted as we had been told by Jose. Stayed there 4 days. Excellent restaurant on Place 'vaiven', open from Thursday to Sunday. We went every day we stayed there, really good food. Fuel on dec-24-2013 was 4.117 for Gallon of Diesel.

After a blown main, a sick port engine, and the threat of Chantal forced us to abort our Ft. Lauderdale delivery we turned south and headed for Marina Pescaderia. Everything previously said is true and this is a great gem on the west coast of PR. Jose, Fernando, Angel...just the best. Juny and Macho great local mechanics. In the heart of the best seafood in PR and close for land excursion (highly recommended) (cheap car rental in Mayaguez) to Rincon and points along the west coast.

Best Fuel and Water stop in Puerto Rico/ Eastern Caribbean., 2013-05-11
Captain: , Melbourne, Australia (62)

The new Marina of Puerto Real, Marina Pescaderia, must be the best fuel and water stop in Puerto Rico, indeed whole of east Caribbean. It has a long and easily approached fuel dock, good staff. Diesel price $4 and Water 5cents/ Gallon. Even big name two stroke oil is only $20 Gallon. Facilities are above standard. Modern bar and restaurant with fantastic service.
AND the cheapest laundry we have found in the whole of the eastern caribbean.
The approach showed on our new chartplotter as 6 feet - Wrong - it is double that, and well marked. We have anchored in front of the marina, and there is plenty of room to do so. We stumbled on this gem through word of a local [thanks Marc, Wings], and I had some trepidations, but boy is this so easy. Miles better than Salinas's sorry fuel dock, and much better than jerry jugging at Boqueron et al. I am totally sold, the word needs to get out on this one.

Nice Marina with a helpful staff, 2013-03-08
Captain: , Apollo Beach, FL (928)

The marina provided excellent service for the 30-hour period we were there. The Dock Master does not speak English and he is the one who answers on the radio. I think they have lost some business because of this. You can call the owner, Jose, on his cell phone (the number published for the marina). He speaks excellent English and is very friendly. When at the marina, you can go to the store next door to the office and get Fernando to act as interpreter. He will also give you advice about where to get things you may need. Free water was ueful for washing all the salt off the boat from our multi-day sail to get there. As at other places, the dryer does not do a good job drying all your clothes, so you need to run multiple cycles or hang your stuff up to dry.

Marina Pescaderia - good fuel stop or overnight, 2013-02-11
Captain: , SW FL (551)

Docks are new and very solid; marina staff is helpful and eager to please; prices for diesel are reasonable ($4.17 with quantity discount, $4.27 otherwise, all taxes included). The town of Puerto Rial is minimal but there are a couple of low end restaurants.

Great folks, 2011-04-23

Small but nice place. The people here are very helpful.

Superb Marina with Great Fuel Price, 2011-03-15
Captain: , Port St Lucie (514)

As I write this Ponce Yacht Club fuel is $.50 per gallon MORE than this marina for diesel and gasoline! The marina is brand new and 3 red markers make entry through the bay easy. The are very friendly and helpful. When we docked 3 dock hands were available to help before we got there.
