Reviews for Marathon Boat Yard Marine Center
Think Twice, 2017-07-09
Captain: , Milwaukee, Wi. (798)

I called Marathon Boat Yard to get my Tides Marine dripless shaft seals replaced. After explaining what I needed done, she said that they would need the boat for 4 days and also said "and you know how hard it is to get parts in the Keys"
I told her to send someone over and that I would give her my charge card if need be. Then when the parts come in they could have the boat for a day or two if necessary! She said she would send over Juan. no Juan! So we stopped over and talked to Neil. "We have no record of who you talked to". So I sat down and started a file. Joe came over to Marathon Marina where our boat was and saw what was needed and left... $200 dollars to do this and get an estimate. I received an estimate via email and then received another email estimate for $400 more! I called, Neil said he forgot to include the charge for lift and to place the boat on the hard! OK!
Joe said he could do it in a day, and to bring the boat over at 8am but they delayed us till 10 am so we had to get a motel room! Joe finished the boat the next day! Went in to pay the bill and they said that we were only charged for labor on one side...I said you ordered two replacement seals as well as two spars to mount on the two shafts, how could you charge for only half I said! We worked out the bill to my liking! A couple hundred bucks more! They put the boat in the water, Joe checked for leaks and away we went... out for a test drive... the port engine Tides Marine blue rubber boot looked like a Hawaiian car dash doll swirling around! Back to the yard to spend the night so Joe could look at it the next day. Joe found that he didn't fully tighten the drive shaft coupler to the transmission flange enough! That fixed it! I don't mind writing the check if I'm treated right and the job gets done correctly the first time! If you can hold off on repairs until you find another facility I recommend it! I'd also like to say that Joe did a fair job! The problems seem to be with Marathon Boat Yard, not their techs. Another looper said MBY sent over an unqualified tech to work on his engines electrical and this tech said that he was a mechanic, not an electrician when asked several questions about what he was doing.
Good Luck

July 8th 2017..,update
Was down just checking the engines and noticed a key sticking out a good inch out of the key way that connects my drive shaft to my transmission coupler on the port engine...Remember, it was the port side that had the bad wobble and all the tech did was tighten the four bolts on the coupler....he didn't tighten the two square head locking nuts to the shaft....he did have wire around them but after I tapped the key back into the keyway very easily i might add I checked the two nuts....they were loose, so I tightened them! I'm guessing that tightening the two nuts when the coupler was not aligned properly in the first place to the drive shaft did not properly secure in and down tight! I like Joe the mechanic, but two mistakes are just sloppiness and could of caused loss of drive in the port engine!!!

Repairs to Two Nuts , June 2017 while at Faro Blanco, 2017-06-12
Captain: , St. Augustine (30)

We were staying at Farao Blanco and needed some minor work. Marathon Boat Works did the work in a very timely manner , and did the work expertly and for a very resoniable fee. I haven't had this kind of service experiance in quite some time. I highly recomend them for any work.

Poor Service. No follow up, 2017-02-26
Captain: , Charleston, SC (210)

I am glad some previous posters had a good experience. Arrived in Marathon with a sick AC system. call Marine Center because they are an AGLCA sponsor. called on a Wednesday and spoke with Natelie, received follow up call on Thursday that a technician would arrive late Friday or Monday. By 3 pm Monday, no follow calls or technician, so I called Marine Center. By noon on Tuesday, no return call or technician; so I dinghied to Marine Center. Everyone asked surprised and everyone denied it was their responsiblity. No committment to schedule. Finally, I was told the technician was off that week. I was asked to call back on Friday. Friday would have been 10 days without any committment to repair or even schedule a repair. I deliberately did not call....Marine Center did not call or follow up.

Called SALT Services on Wednesday based on slip-mates recommendation. Technician was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Technician, actually the owner, arrived on time and made repair. Followed up via email. Very reasonble costs.
SALT is not an AGLCA sponsor, but a sponsor of SSA. Highly recommend.

Top Shelf Service , 2017-02-11
Captain: , Lafayette, LA. (12)

Chuck V. 53' Carver Le Bateau Bon Temps

Please extend my deepest appreciation to the entire team for the great service provided. Although it was several years back, this was my third visit to your facility, and once again the response was top shelf. Rome said he was putting one of his top guys on it, and Juan certainly was that guy. Then Ed stepped in there and made an expert and instant weld repair on a pipe that that was not available locally. Then to top it off, we discovered that evening somewhat of an air condition problem. As I was checking out the next morning, I asked the team once again for assistance. I had just returned back to the boat, and Ramon showed up with tools and freon and knocked it out in less than 30 min. Wow!

Capable and Honest, 2016-12-16
Captain: , Hollywood (462)

When was the last time you had a mechanic talk you out of a haul-out job. We had a trim tab leak and what appeared to be a defective sea cock installation by another yard. They sent Juan to give a preliminary opinion. He explained that the esa cock was a type that did not require tru-hull bolting and the hydraulic leak was a loose connection, not a corroded transom nipple. Five minutes with a wrench and a quart of fluid and we wetre back in business. I can recommend these folks.

very responsive, 2016-06-09
Captain: , Otiental, NC (20)

Had a fuel leak issue. Sherry got me in to a slip quickly and Juan assessed, diagnosed and fixed problem in a matter of minutes, very impresed. This is a boatyard and not a marina, do not expect marina type accomadations.

Not very cruiser-friendly, 2016-04-22
Captain: , Maverick too, Hamburg (90)

It one of those places that charge you twice the monthly rate for not even two weeks. "I cant give you the monthly rate, cause you have not been here for a month". Thanks. I like those places. We thought about staying for the rest of the month %u2013 but I really did not want to. We came to Marathon Boatyard cause we had to leave our boat somewhere and nobody else had a slip. They didnt either, but allowed us to raft up to another boat. It might be an okay-place to haul your boat and do some minor work, cause west-marine is right next door. But we did not feel welcomed. The dockmaster did not know that we were coming and was very rude. We were not able to plug in, cause they only have 30amp-outlets. When we got back after eight days our batteries were almost dead. The bathroom (only 1!) wasn't as good as described by somebody else. It was in bad shape and not really clean. We were glad to leave. The only positive thing: They read and answer emails.

Great service, 2016-04-04
Captain: , Ephraim (20)

We had to have our engine removed out of our grand Banks 42. The yard did a wonderful job removing and then reinstalling the engine in the boat. I would highly recommend this yard for any type of service big or small.

Great Marina, 2015-06-07
Captain: , Colorodo (327)

I cannot say enough good things about this boat yard. Had to get engine work done and they did it very fast and efficently. I am out of Miami so I left the boat with them and they called me almost everyday to update me and got it done!! Would go out of my way to go to this boat yard again.

Gotta Givem A Five, 2014-05-22
Captain: , Port Aransas (992)

We had our boat here for repair of our raw water pump, an exhaust hose leak and our refrigeration. All were resolved to our great relief and the staff was nothing but efficient and professional. We've paid far more for far less along the way and we would have no reservations in recommending this business to anyone.

They also impressed us by giving back to the Cruising community by doing free seminars. This is above and beyond in the PR department. They are a also a "Clean Boatyard".

Highly recommended., 2014-04-18
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (93)

We've just had bottom paint and some other minor jobs done at this excellent boatyard. We were going to take the boat back to Ft Lauderdale for the work, but after reading the reviews here on Active Captain, we decided to stay in Marathon (we've been on a ball in Boot Key Harbor for the past four months). Excellent service, kind and friendly staff and reasonable prices (our final bill even came in under the estimate). Elizabeth in the office and Randy in the yard were so helpful when I worried if I'd closed the fly bridge hatch, and worried if I set the electrical panel right. They took care of it and reassured me. If you need work doing, I'd highly recommend these folks.

The ONLY Place to get work done in the Keys, 2014-03-27
Captain: , Detroit (767)

We have had the Boat Yard do a wide variety of work on our trawler - from a complete bottom job to engine diagnosis and repair. Bruce and Sherri run a great establishment. Any work that can wait until we get to Marathon gets done at the Boat Yard.
They also take a great interest in the boating community by offering free seminars on fishing, boat maintenance, engine maintenance, etc.

top notch service, 2014-03-25
Captain: , fairhope, al (42)

Had the packing gland on the rudder post replaced along with the bedding for the thru hull attach bolts and the refrigerator thermostat replaced. All the staff were superb and very professional. The charges were very resonable. I was allowed to do most of the work myself and the staff freely gave me advice when I was about to screw up. I will recommend them highly.

Its a boatyard and MORE, 2014-01-13
Captain: , STOCKBRIDGE, MA (50)

January 2014 - Marathon Boatyard and Marine Center - We have kept our Manta 42 Catamaran there for Two summers. The yard has become a home away from home for us . The whole staff has become like family. Always friendly , Always Knowledgable. The Care they give our 42' Manta Catamaran is outstanding . They are always there to help and answer questions about anything. Joe and Tina were even out helping take care of people on Christmas morning that needed it . ANd best of all - THe BATHROOMS have been UPGRADED and are among the best in the keys !!!!!!
And the Hair Stylist on site is outstanding . Bruce is a constant source of knowledge and interesting web articles.. Joe gets to have two children named after him. Go there for the best service and nicest people in the keys . SV - Cecilia Marie

2013-We found Marathon Boatyard and MARINE CTR - NEXT TO THE BOOT KEY HARBOR BRIDGE [ Not to be confused with Marathon Marina out in the Channel ] to be and excellant choice for hauling storing our 42 x 21 ft Manta catamaran for the Summer. We had major work on one Volvo enginej and Diagnostics on the other . Both were done professionally and very competantly by Victor. We named an engine after him .
NEw raymarine electronics with Sirius weather and AIS were installed expertly by ED.. I will name a child after him if I ever have one.
Any cosmetics , Paint or repairs to the hulls are handled experty by JOE. He also taught me of RUM and tickling lobsters. 5 stars .
It is a boatyard after all . So Bathroom was not the cleanest but the shower was fine. WEST MARINE is right next door. Groceries and Home Depot are within walking distance and a car is available if needed. THe OLD 7 MILE BRIDGE is a great walk in the morning.
THere is no Fuel. But there are three fuel docks close by .
BRUCE AND SHERRY , the owners are great. Everyone we met was very nice and GREAT to work with . I highly recommend them for any work your need.. We will return

Good parts supply and great service., 2013-09-11
Captain: , Sanford, FL (657)

Found the parts I wanted here and because I had a problem with my sea water pump on the port engine, I used their service department. They solved my problem within minutes and we were on our way the very next day, secure in our little home on the water.

Helpful Location, 2013-06-17
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (268)

Great place for parts, Yanmar, Yamaha and others. Also full service boatyard, didn't use their service department but pleased with the parts departments assistance and inventory. Bonus - they have a dinghy dock accessed from Boot Key Harbor (and free popcorn).

THE boatyard in Marathon, 2013-02-21
Captain: , NORTH EAST, MD (125)

Nice friendly yard with highly trained staff and large, clean facility.

Vaughan Taylor, 2013-02-08
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (451)

This is an outstanding service yard with very skilled master technicians. Sherry, the yard manager is fantastic, as is Tony in the parts department. If you need anything done on your boat while in Marathon, this is the yard you should go to! They do the work quickly, and cleanly, and they are extremely nice to deal with.

overpriced and and do not stand by work., 2011-07-17
Captain: , Ottawa (10)

I brought my boat there for a warranty recall on my Yanmar engines. After they worked on my boat I had a number of issues that were never there before. After months of trying to resolve these outstanding issues they begain to say the engines were fixed and problems were "new" and not their problem. When I went to Marathon Diesal (a local competitor) they diagnosed and fixed the problems in 2 hours.

Excellent Service, 2011-02-09
Captain: , Beaufort Morehead Yacht Club (221)

I had an alternator problem and went to Marathon Boat Yard to get it fixed. The replacement alternator had to be shipped in. We stayed over a weekend plus a couple of days in their marina.

We were impressed with the friendly staff, the timely work (within 2 hours after the alternator arrived, we were on our way) and excellent service.

The West Marine next door is a real conveniece (and temptation)

The only negative is that the bathroom (only one) is not the cleanest I've ever seen, but afterall, it is a boatyard, not a luxury marina.

now a yamaha service spot, 2010-08-27
Captain: , Marathon, FL (121)

good source of yamaha parts if you need some in the area

Marathon Boatyard, 2007-12-10
Captain: , Avalon, NJ (208)

While not normally a transient marina, they will let you stay if there is room available. You may get "bumped" as this primarily a boatyard. They have an excellent reputation for mechanical and other repairs, and you get free dockage while they work on your boat. Very close to West Marine (on property), several restuarants, marine contractors, and a couple of small grocery stores. Not much in the way of marina amenities though.
