Reviews for Manteo Municipal Free Docks
Final Ablemarle Loop stop, 2016-11-22
Captain: , Kemah Texas (180)

This was our last stop on the Loop. Lots to see and do here, even in the off season. The dock master even let us stay an extra paid night at the free dock so we didn't have to move. Several great restaurants within walking distance. Easy to get in if you follow the directions precisely. The boardwalk is beautiful and the lighthouse is definitely worth a visit as it gives a nice history of a local boat builder.

Great visit to Manteo!, 2015-10-15
Captain: , Woolford MD (132)

Just had a nice visit to Manteo. Plenty of water getting in. Very helpful staff at marina. Groceries, laundry, propane and hardware store less than half a mile. Highly recommend stopping in Manteo!

Bulkhead near the Gazebo was beter than the slips, 2015-04-29
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2709)

On our previous visit, we used the slips with the tiny finger piers and no cleats. This time, we contacted Manteo Waterfront and asked for advice for free dockage. Carl directed us to the bulkhead on the corner by the stone cross just south of the Gazebo. It was a fine 2 days (and extra day allowed because we had 'boat problems).' If you take either side of the 70 foot pier leading out to the Gazebo, you will have access to water.

Free town dock, but shallow appraoch, 2015-04-29
Captain: , US East Coast (1026)

This is a good stop for snowbirds, however, it requires extra attention and limits larger vessels (with deeper draft) to come in. Dockmaster Karl was very helpful. He provided all necessary instructions to make safe approach to the docks and found good spot for me on the free town dock, with water, but no electric.

The biggest challenge is the entrance to the channel leading to the harbor (by G3 & R4). I've registered 3.5' in the shallowest spot. From there on, the channel depths are mostly around 5'. Docks have good water 7'+.

According to the dockmaster, you have to stay in the mid channel when heading to the harbor. Staying too close to either side, will not provide good depth. As you come in, it's easy to judge the green side (although no markers are there), due to lobster/crab pots are hugging the channel.

When heading northbound from the town, lobster/crab pots are allover, so keep a sharp lookout and don't transit the area in poor viz or in the dark (unless you have line cutters)

I didn't have a chance to see the town, so can't comment on that.

Pretty Shallow here, 2013-07-26
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

Nice docks but only 4.5 to 5 feet of water

Well Its free, 2013-07-06
Captain: , Southport, NC (706)

We called and told the dockmaster we were coming in from the channel. He said he was busy with paper work and couldnt help us. OK we can do it ourselves. We only draw 3.5 ft so we were fine on the corner near the pumpout station. It's a boardwalk of sorts so we tied to piles which were OK. People walk by nonstop and look into your boat. Curious people, but friendly. Also swings were squeeking at 11:30pm in the park beside us. I knew I should have sprayed some WD-40 earlier but forgot. Weather was very hot so we didnt sleep much. Manteo city has very tight slips and wasnt willing to budge on a weekly price so we went to Shallowbag Marina after 24 hours. We cant complain too much, the price was right.

Manteo Free Docks and Marina, 2013-05-08
Captain: , Portland, Oregon (496)

Concur with other reviews. We stayed one free night on the pump out dock next to the brown roof gazebo. We then moved to the marina for one night.
We wanted to go out to the fort but it is 6 or 8 miles and we haven't yet exercised our bikes enough to ride that far. So, we called a taxi (Lady Jane Taxi, 252-256-2276) to go out and back. Approximately $10 each way. It was worth the ride to see the Park Service visitor's center, the fort, and the Elizabethan Gardens. The town is great and wasn't too busy in early may.

Nice Docks Right in Town, 2013-04-28
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4015)

The description of the various docking options is accurate. If you use the hybrid view and zoom in, you can see the docks to plan your approach. We docked on the north side of the dock with the gazebo. There was water on the dock, needed since Pamlico Sound coated the boat in salt. We walked the museum grounds on the island across the bridge and found the grounds to be beautifully landscapped. We were too late to tour the museum. Thanks to the city for providing us a free dock to visit.

Friendly Spot, 2012-11-13
Captain: , Detroit (260)

Spent 1 night tied to the end of the wall by pump out station opposite lighthouse. Dockmasters George and Carl are outstanding. 6' draft was very softly grounded when we left. No problem backing out.

Manteo free dock, 2012-10-13
Captain: , boston (70)

We draw 5'6". Came in channel no problem. Docked on bulkhead close to pump out station.

24 hour limit. Nice folks at Manteo waterfront will help you dock. Pump out for $5 and water nearby. Playground right in front of dock. Roanoke Island festival park just across foot bridge. Lots for kids to do and explorer. Free wifi. Farmers market on Saturday mornings in adjacent park until about mid October.

A bit shallow at the Lighthouse docks, 2010-06-14
Captain: , Kent Island, MD (271)

2nd Week of June 2010 - We managed 3 nights here but I think we were pushing our luck. We were at the bulkhead. Saw an outboard boat kick up mud at the slips on the lighthouse pier. No electric but water was close.

Manteo City Free Dock, 2010-06-07
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

Room for two 40' boats. No elec, but there is water if you have a long hose near the gazebo. We showed 5.5 feet below while tied up. Wifi, at&t and verizon available.

Free Dock-Manteo, NC, 2010-06-07
Captain: , On the water (1501)

That damn "Knot Tide Down", he always beats me to the punch when it comes to marking a new spot.....guess I have to be quicker! Manteo is a nice little stop with quaint stops and good eateries, be sure and have an omelette at Magnolia Grill! Gro. store and Ace Hardware are both about 5 block away. If the dock is full you can also tie up (free) to both sides of the pavillion walkway which is just north of the free dock wall
