The hill above the museum has many old buildings from the Madison Barracks where soldiers were trained from War of 1812 through World War II. Then operations were moved to Fort Drum. Fascinating history.

Reviews for Madison Barracks Marina
Great First Stop on Lake Ontario, 2015-07-05

Madison Barracks was created during Pres. Madison's term, and was not closed until 1947. It has the classic grace and beauty of a pre-WW2 Army base -- beautiful officers' housing, an old gym, and a very old movie theater. The barracks have been modernized into a very pretty inn, and there is a large, well-groomed parade ground. The gym has not been refurbished, and that is the major rub, since it is the location of the current bathroom and showers. Anthropology students will find it fascinating, but boaters may expect something closer to the dock, easier to get to, and with hotter water. Not handicapped accessible.
Friendly, helpful staff -- Marina, dock master, is great, and the best-looking dockhand we've experienced in four years of cruising. Young dock hands eager to please and pleasant but inexperienced with handling big boats.
Docks are old but in good shape -- wooden floaters behind impressive breakwater.
The marina/inn/compound sponsors the annual Made in New York festival the first weekend in July. Easy walk to the festival, which was great. Atop our boat was good spot to watch fireworks in Sackets Harbor.

It was good for a night. I had friends nearby.. would have given it a 5 but no stores etc.. Town is about a mile with plenty of eateries

Nice marina. Alittle walk to shower/bathroom and to town. However a new restaurant has just opened in the old facility.

Excellent marina about 1 mile East of Town. Lots of side to dockage and staff was very helpful in docking, etc. What looks like a nice resturant is on site but we walked to town. Only problem was the facilities were a fair walk. They are in an old brick building which was formerly part of the historic Army base which also has a health club which could use some more restoration.
