Reviews for Mackinaw City Marina
Very helpful staff, 2017-08-02
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (285)

We stayed here four nights to catch-up on boat work. The staff was very helpful. The docks are a bit older than its prom queen neighbor, the Straits State harbor, but still it was a nice facility and we liked the vibe more. They received several packages for us. The lounge and laundry were very nice and the boater bathrooms excellent. There's a reasonably sized marine store, Sheplers, on the grounds and a hardware store in town. The grocery store was the only disappointment. It's just a step up from a convenience store level. Apparently the locals all shop at the super Walmart in cheboygan, which isn't much help unless you can hotwire a car. The town itself can wear on you if you are there for more than a day, as it is a zoo with tourists, and amusement park type activities, and tshirts and fudge shops for when you are done. Do check out the Mackinaw icebreaker. It is very well done and informative history of the Great Lakes.

Great place to stay, 2016-08-27
Captain: , Bedford, NH (775)

We stayed here on Aug 15. Staff very nice and helplful. We are a 50' vessel with 15' beam and 3.5' draft. Plenty of water, showed at least 6' at the slip and more on entry to marina. No problems getting in and out of our slip. Docks are nice. Pump outs are at the slip. Ferry to Mackinac Island is next door. Great shopping center across the street. Didn't use the facilities but they are very conveniently located. Would definitely stay here again.

Great Staff, very social, 2016-07-10
Captain: , Muskegon MI (60)

We spent the 4th of July there, and had a great time. Sure there is ferry traffic, but they are amaizingly careful and dont make much wake. We did notice there was a lot of people just walking the dock to look around, so if you are not social, this is not the place for you. Try the Straights Marina, there is no one there, so it is very private.

Nice for a short stop, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Rockford, IL (614)

Staff was very helpful. At first we thought we had the wrong entrance with ferries going in and out, but this is the place. We were on a dock with 50amp service and the manager loaned us an adapter for our dual 30 amp hookup. Interesting 20 minute walk away.

Wonderful town to visit, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Wicomico Church (610)

The town has everything.. and we needed to wait three days for weather as Lake Michigan was gusting to 35 with 8-10 foot waves..

Great brewpub stop & wonderful Harbor Hosts, 2014-09-04
Captain: , Galena, MD (1856)

Cannot say enough good things about our harbor hosts as mentioned in the previous post. John took us across the Mackinac Bridge to a great market and found a propane filling station to fill my pancake tank.
Mackinac Island Brewhouse is located south on Huron St, just a few blocks from the marina. They have 12-15 microbrews on tap and fill howlers and growlers. You can also sit and taste whatever is on tap. They also have the largest selection of microbrews in bottles and cans that i have seen. A great selection of Michigan microbrews. They also have a large selction of wines.

Harbor host port, close to town, great staff., 2014-08-25
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, Fl (440)

This is the home marina for AGLCA Harbor Host Mary and John Leatherman which is a plus. Thanks Mary & John for all your hospitality. Located close to all the shops & restaurants. The marina staff is knowledgeable & helpful. Restrooms & laundry clean. We spent over a week here & had no problems. During that week several Great Loop Boats came & went so fun was had by all. Only downside of this location: renting a car is a pain! No rental dealer in the town of Mackinaw. You will have to take a $30.00 (one way) shuttle to the airport 14 miles away.

Great Place to Stop and Spend Time, 2014-08-24
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1394)

This is the home marina for AGLCA Harbor Host Mary and John Leatherman. That has got to speak for itself. We spent from 8-9-14 through 8-16-14. Lots to seen and do. Took the Ferry to Mackinac Island. Marina personnel and dock hands all very professional, courteous, and helpful. Ferry's not a problem at all. 50 amp 250 volt works just fine. There were six plus Great lLoop Boats the entire time we were there. They have low floating docks just ask for one. We loved our high dock on Pier C Dock 80 and the pillings between our neighbors. A six poiint tie was great. Restroom Facilities and boater lounge top notch. Visited the USCG Icebreaker Mackinaw next door and Shepler's Marine
store on site. If you only stay one night your missed everything!

Great staff, but ferries are a pain, 2014-08-10
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (1176)

Nice marina, but too many ferry wakes. Close to town, but town is very busy & touristy. Marina staff is very friendly and helpful. Wish we went to the marina next door.

Fun spot - lots of tourists, 2014-08-09
Captain: , Grafton, Il (104)

Agree with other reviewers - very well run marina with a well trained crew. Located near the main street of downtown Mackinaw City which appears to mainly exist to cater to the 1000's of tourists who visit Mackinaw Is. each summer. It definitely is full of tourists in Aug. but that didn't detract from a very pleasant stay. Most of the larger (60') docks are fixed and very tall, but you should have no problem getting off any boat with any type of side access 4' of higher off the water. Otherwise, there are aluminum ladders that can be used, fixed to each dock. Some docks have lower finger piers, so you can request one of those if getting off the boat will be a problem at the higher docks. Good places to eat in town (easy walk) including one of the most unique Italian resturants, Nonna Lisa, we have been to - good food and very interesting decor. USS Mackinaw, a retired Coast Guard icebreaker is open for tours and is within easy walking distance. Marina is the closest one to the Sheppler's Ferry docks to the Island, but the ferry wakes are not a problem. Great WIFI connectivity. Only real negative is the lack of a nearby grocery store of any size. There is a convenience store nearby.

Great Marina, 2013-08-04
Captain: , Traverse City, MI (56)

We have stayed here a few times with the night of 8-1-2013 the most recent. The staff is some of the friendliest and most helpful in Northern Michigan. They only have a few floating docks and we were lucky to get one this time. The last time we stayed we had a permanent dock and was a little bit of a climb up. Newly updated bath facilities are great. Very close to downtown. The Keyhole Bar always has great food and friendly service. Sheplers Ship Store is next door if you need service or parts. Gas dock and pump out is fairly high off the water and this would be my only complaint.

Fun location but not good for serious provisioning, 2012-08-28
Captain: , LeClaire, Iowa (449)

We stayed here one night in August. The tourist season was still going strong but we never noticed any wake problems from the nearby ferries. They put us into the old steel docks, which are high and narrow. Dockhands were friendly and capable. It was fun being near the touristy shops, and there is an extensive marine store next door. Walked a few blocks to a convenience store but did not buy much because of the price.

Very Good Marina, 2012-08-20
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1850)

Stayed four nights here. Very satisfied. The shoreside amenities are very good indeed. Large, clean, modern bathrooms/showers are top notch. Three very new washers and dryers. Very convenient to all of Mackinaw City. Grocery store is a few block walk but no prob. If you need a new tee-shirt or have a hankering for some fudge this is the place for you. As noted by other reviewers the docks are high but they didnt used to be. They are installing lower floating finger docks but it is a long process. They have two pump out stations at the tee gas fuel dock. Diesel is sold over at the wall where the ferrys tie up. There is a marine store and full service boat yard here also. We enjoyed our stay here very much.

Next time the state marina, 2012-07-25
Captain: , Sault Ste Marie, MI (240)

The high docks are an inconvenince but workable. The facility itself is clean and well maintained. The location with respect to shops and restaurants would be hard to beat, but the State harbor, which is essentially next store and almost as close to the shops and restaurants will be my choice next time-much quieter and the docks are not nearly as high in the air.

Good Location, 2012-07-19
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

Four stars for location. Near the numerous shops, restaurants, and bars. There is an IGA within walking distance. But, we chose to rent a car and provision in Cheboyagan (which would be a better stop for major provisioning). To rent a car you ride a great little bus to the Chevrolet dealer in Cheboyagan ($5 per person each way). The marina docks are very high and supported by steel H beams (as described by earlier posts) with wood fenders. Most slips have aluminum ladders which you climb up to get from the boat to the dock. Not great but not too bad either. Showers and heads are new. Marina does not have diesel but you can buy diesel next door at the ferry dock.

Fixed Steel Docks, 2012-07-09
Captain: , Guntersville, AL (451)

I did not care for the steel fixed docks supported by I-beams some wrapped in rubber and others not. The shore power voltage on the 50 Amp service varied between 203 and 208 VAC far below the spec for marine equipment. My smart Xantrex inverter would not accept that voltage.
I received a refund and went to Straits State Harbor Marina. Straits is a new modern marina with good water depth, shore power and service. It's a well kept secret.

Wonderful Place, 2012-01-29
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (201)

Stayed here twice in July 2011, and found it very comfortable and handy to everything. We were on the center fairway, so the ferries did not bother us much. The docker restrooms and showers were among the best I'd seen on the whole cruise. Cruiser lounge, laundry and library were outstanding. I agree about the docks. They are converting to floating docks, and the sooner the better. Even so, I would go back in an instant, if I were in the territory.

Nice place, 2011-09-21
Captain: , Channel Islands, California (1149)

We stayed here to sit out some weather. Very convenient location. Nice and helpful staff. Great ships store nearby. Very nice marina office and library. Not quite sure why they charge more than other state marinas other than the fact that they are Mackinaw Ciy. I'd stay here again.

Yes, its older but still nice, 2011-08-12
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

All the reviews are right, this marina needs to work on its docks. They are getting old, and are high. Hard to get off if you exit off a swim platform. But it is very convienent to town and the ferry, and you cannot beat the staff. Very helpful. The shoreside facilities are very clean. The price is very fair as well. Nice

may not want the shuttle side, 2011-08-10
Captain: , Detroit (720)

docks getting old and some damaged, but the biggest thing is the shuttles are coming in and out all the time and it's loud and disruptive to your boat with prop wash and wake

A Good Stop, 2011-08-06
Captain: , Marthas Vineyard (506)

Nice on-site accommodations and helpful crew at this marina, lots of tourist shops nearby, not too practical for provisioning, there is a small grocery store just a little hike away. Docks are high, we have low freeboad and hard to use a ladder. Right next to the Sheppler ferry service to Mackinac Island, very handy, and you can walk to some sites of historical interest.

Mackinaw City Marina, 2011-07-10
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

High docks, helpfull staff, good laundry and rest rooms. Near many shops and a great marine hardware store with most charts and chart books.

Mackinaw City Municipal Marina, 2011-06-30
Captain: , Oriental, NC (1148)

The entrance to this marina is not obvious until one gets very close. there are two prominent jetty markers on the port and stbd side and a "NO WAKE" sign. The roof of the office building is blue and white stripped. The Marina has all the ammenities a cruiser could want. In the next slip over is Sheplers that does boat repairs. All in all, a good place to stop with shopping and most other things nearby.

myboatfruition, 2011-04-01
Captain: , Hammond Bay (1841)

Great helpful staff but the old docks are really high and if you have to bring things on or off the boat it is a real pain. The ferrys are contstantly coming in and out from early till late. The wake and the noise is an issue.

Excellent municipal marina, 2010-07-25
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

Well maintained marina located at the base of the main street. Staff is very helpful and efficient. Wi-fi at the docks. Clean shower and restroom facilities.

Shepler's Marine right next door can provide service for most problems and has a very well stocked ship's store. Diesel is available at ferry dock next door and at a reasonable price.

Mackinaw City Marina, 2010-07-11
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Another nice Michigan marina. All the usual facilities. Most docks are relatively high fixed docks with a few floating docks.
Main draw is the tourist stuff.
Ferrys make getting in and out a pain with thier wakes.

Older yes, but very nice, 2009-08-17
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Ifi it would have had grocery shopping close by, I would have given it another star.
Good marine store close, lots of tourist shops, and a cinema.
Marina has laundry, lift, lounge, wifi in lounge, charts in lounge

Mackinaw City Marina, 2009-07-01
Captain: , Howard Prairie (510)

Great marina, nice staff treated us well right in town

Nice facility , 2009-06-26
Captain: , Port Ontario, Lake Ontario (410)

We tied up there while having some autopilot trouble. Marina was very nice about it as we only stayed for a few hours. The marina is right in downtown Mackinaw City, very handy but the City doesn't have much of a grocery store more like a big convenience store.
My beam is 15' and the slip was very tight. I had just a few inches of clearance. Not sure if they are all that width of if I just choose poorly. Docks are in very nice shape otherwise.

Mackinaw City, 2009-06-10
Captain: , Clear Lake, TX (694)

We had old, high fixed docks that we liked. New docks and electrical poles are being put in. The people were nice and the shoreside facilites included showers, restrooms, day room & laundry. Old bikes were available for use. Gas & pumpout ($10) were on site and diesel next door at the ferry dock. Close to town & shops. Marine store at corner. We were somewhat hampered by 3 windy, cold & rainy days.

This marina to be replaced., 2007-11-24
Captain: , Cheboygan, MI (18)

A new marina is under development for this aging relick. If you need a dock in the area try the New Marina at St Ignace.
