Reviews for Leland Township Harbor
wonderful marina, 2017-09-14
Captain: , Stow, MA (470)

Everything was top notch in this marina. Great showers, laundry, lounge and clean! Docks were clean as well. And a beautiful town. Wish we could have stayed more than one night.

Nice place to stop, 2017-09-11
Captain: , Penetang (164)

12 ft water bottom of boat, draft of 4ft, great dock hands, good floating docks. if wind from south a little swelly in harbor, clean washrooms and showers. town is 100ft away, nice little shops, fresh and smoked fish, groceries and restaurants. will come back again!

Great Marina and Great services , 2017-09-02
Captain: , Franklin, MI (82)

Leland is a small town but the Marina and the staff are fantastic. They purchased their own dredge to make sure the Harbor has good water! The restrooms are top notch as is the boater?s living room which is great to relax. They also have a book swap. Love the town ? Small but lovely.

Great place, 2017-08-30
Captain: , Britt, Ontario, Canada (101)

Green space, large docks, friendly and helpful staff. All this in the center of the village.

Chanel Completely Open and Dredged to 12', 2017-08-29
Captain: , Campbell Creek, NC (564)

We saw nothing under 14' going in. Some charts have the configuration of slips wrong.
Newer floating docks in keeping with the style at Charlevoix and St Ignace. Large breakwater walls, but seas were flat while we were here. Fenders horizontal as piles outside of the docks.
Very good WiFi. Diesel was $2.86, expected to go with delivery on 8/29 due to Hurricane Harvey.
Large, spacious, newer marina office, boaters lounge with separate shower rooms and large His and Hers Bathrooms. Shower rooms were excellent, though the Admiral had to go to the women's bathroom to dry and style her hair.
The Historic Fishtown with shops, fish market, candy/ice cream shops and restaurant by the dam were unique. More upscale shopping, almost hidden in courtyards off the streets, were numerous and interesting. Small grocery store, too.
Small "dog run" to the side of marina building, but more space by the parking lot. Plus our dog loved walking the town shopping district and stopping for pets, rubs and attention.
This stop is worth two nights, but we needed to move on before weather stopped us for a few days.

Loved this marina!, 2017-08-28
Captain: , Petoskey, MI (10)

Spent one night here (would have been too if we didn't need to leave to beat the weather!). Dock hands and harbor master super friendly. Beautiful boater's lounge and very clean facilities. Fish Town and its shops and restaurants provide plenty of choices. Aug 26, 2017, fuel was $2.86/gallon.
NOTE: The marina takes credit cards, but many of the Fish Town shops and restaurants only take cash.

good stop, tricky entrance in a west wind., 2017-08-25
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (829)

Pulled in here as we were being slapped by a thunderstorm. Pretty tricky entrance when it's rough but plenty of depth. Dock hands were wonderful, facilities new. They have there own dredge now so keeping the harbor open should not be a problem. Expect tourist prices at grocery and restaurants

great little marina, 2017-08-22
Captain: , Milwaukee (190)

The marina is a little tighter than most around but the staff is incredible. With water levels up the break wall has proved to be insufficient. The facilities are very nice and only a short walk from the fish market and an excellent sandwich shop.

Plenty of Channel Depth, 2017-08-20
Captain: , Petoskey MI (327)

Leland continues to be a favorite harbor. The city bought a dredge and the channel depth is no longer an issue. The facilities and staff are first rate, although the wifi is very poor, even in the lounge. The smoked and fresh whitefish at Carlson's are always the best.

Very nice new marina., 2016-08-17
Captain: , La Pointe WI (201)

I really like this marina which got a new building and new docks a few years ago. It is accessible to everything in this charming old town. Fish Town, across from the marina, dates to the 1800's and it's old buildings house some fun shops & eateries. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the showers are not attached to the restrooms. The Lounge & Laundry are terrific. I recommend this marina. The staff is very personable as with the marina's "boat boys".

Leland Marina, 2016-08-06
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

Now a great marina, but still not adequate for the number of boats that want to tie up here. Therefore, be prepared to be rafted. Harbormaster says, "We won't turn you away. We will find a place for you." (Which is a good thing since there aren't many marinas or good anchorages on this stretch of coast.)

They aren't on the Michigan DNR reservation system, but the harbor master told me you should call ahead if you want a berth.

I'm downgrading them one star because their internet wifi didn't work: wouldn't connect, repeated tries, connected, slow, disconnected me, tried again and again.

Silting has closed half the entrance channel. They have laid out several red buoys to show the way: keep them on your starboard side as you go in and you will be fine (even big boats).

Really great place and staff!, 2016-08-03
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

We were not disappointed one bit with the professional way they handle fueling, slip assignments, and assist with docking. The lounge and office are first class and the laundry was close and very adequate. The showers are numerous and private - very nice, too.

Another great Michigan Marina, 2016-07-15
Captain: , La Crosse, WI (941)

Everything is as good as the previous reviews state. It can be very busy (or full) if the lake is rough. Clean restrooms and showers. Great ice cream at the Mercantile.

Update: Still One of our favorities, 2015-09-11
Captain: , Burnham Harbor, Chicago (251)

We came back this year for the second time and we remain super impressed with the facilities and the town! The harbor staff is first rate and Harbor Master is great for local knowledge. The marina is truely first class on Lake Michigan.

We once again dined at the Riverside Inn and had a very fine meal.

We'll be back!!

Great stop - just too long a stay., 2015-09-02
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

We ended up being here 6 nights (8/21/15 - 8/26/15) due to high winds/rain. Great stop/town - good for more than one night, but 6 was a bit much. Restrooms at the dock in great shape, but hot water for showers not plentiful.
The town of Leland is great - grocery just a block away from the docks, and plenty of good restaurants/pubs.

With winds from the south, we rocked more than when winds from the west, as it seemed to funnel into the harbor entrance and swirl things around. Wind from the west was a little more visually impressive (spray over the harbor jetty), but not as rocky as from the south.

Wifi was excellent - very strong signal, which was great as we were there 6 days.

Very cute town and very good marina, 2015-08-31
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

The marina is top notch with terrific new showers and lounge. The town is very cute and makes for a very enjoyable stopover. The only downside is that this is a very popular spot and every slip was taken -- I was very glad I had made a reservation early.

another great Michigan Marina, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

After being weathered in at Charlevoix, Leland was our next stop.
We were pleasantly surprised at the staff's professionalism and friendliness.
They also had a great price for diesel at $2.75

Another Gem in the UP, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Little River, SC (2037)

As we approached Leland Harbor we could not believe the water here. It was like visiting a Carribean Island. Beautiful tourqoise water. Nice town, interesting shops. Stayed an extra day due to wind and took the ferry to S. Manitou Island. Beautiful island, highly recommend the wagon tour. Downside: both crossings were very rough, upper ferry deck was not usable due to water spray. People were getting seasick down below.

fun stop has lots to offer, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1804)

Good marina and fun town, lots of shops and very good Restaurants, post office, very good grocery, good walking and biking. Fishtown is an interesting area. New marina facilities , very clean. Many charter boats work out of Fishtown. Big Salmon fishing area.

Great Place To Stage For Visiting The Manitou Islands, 2015-08-06
Captain: , Peoria, IL (310)

Very nice facilities and a nice town that is all within easy walking distance. Restaurants, touristy shops, and a surprisingly well stocked grocery store are just at the top of the hill.

Keep coming back to great stop, 2015-07-23
Captain: , Green Bay, WI (400)

Second visit overnight 7th and 8th July 2015. First overnight 19th August 2014. One of the Admiral's (and my) most favorite stops. Super clean, great town outstanding dock help and wifi. Fairways kind of tight but ask for assistance and you will be impressed. A true gem.

New docks, great lounge, spotless bathrooms, 2015-07-13
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1130)

3 dockhands greeted us on arrival and tied us off perfectly. Fish town is really cool. Good wine and cheese shops. Some difficulty finding vegetarian meals at the local restaurants, tho. Pretty area. No security at the Marina and lots of tourists walk the docks to see the boats. I doubt they've had any issues, but it don't expect much privacy during the day.

Nice town, helpful staff, 2015-06-30
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

2 dock hands came out to help us dock, also came out to see us off. Town has shops, restaurants, also merchantile whcih stocks most of what you might need.

Updated 6/30/2015: many changes to marina since 1st visit in 2011. New harbor layout makes for easier docking, wide fairways and slips. Received nice Leland welcome pkg on arrival. Very nice marina building with boater's lounge, clean/roomy restrooms, weather screen. Lots of shopping in Leland. Several reasonably priced restaurants.

Great scenic town with a top rate marina, 2015-06-26
Captain: , Leland (10)

Great helpful staff, excellent facilities with a nice lounge and several bars and restaurants in the area. Our favorite stop on Lake Michigan.

Outstanding Stop, 2014-09-04
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1394)

This was a Great Stop. Dredged annually 12 ft coming in the channel. No Buoys. Good for our 5 ft Draft. Russ & Sarah and entire staff excellent. Fish town, right next to marina and the entire town just delightfull. Stayed 3 nights 8-28, 8-29 & 8-30-14. It is a FUN stop. Three T-Head docks to tie along side. 8ft water from water line or 3 feet under our keel. Capt Helen & Chief Engr Bob onboard ALLEZ MT50

Nice marina right in town, 2014-08-25
Captain: , Westport CT (311)

This is a good stop in a nice little town. Very good restrooms, showers and boaters' lounge.

One of the Better Ones, 2014-08-25
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

A very welcoming Michigan marina. All one could ask for. The harbor master was very friendly and informative. Excellent shoreside facilities. The smoked fish IS that good.

A stop to make for sure, 2014-08-20
Captain: , Austin, TX (877)

We enjoyed this stop. Facilities are excellent. Town, restaurants and grocery at your doorstep.

Fun stop fun town, 2014-08-20
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1997)

We enjoyed our two nights here while the weather blew through.
The marina is in very good shape the restrooms and boater lounge is great.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and the ability to live stream via wifi was excellent and we would not hesitate in coming back.
Only problem was with a south wind we did rock a little bit but not enough to disturb a good nights sleep

Great marina, 2014-08-18
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (1176)

Great marina with new facilities. Very close to town, but town gets very busy. Cute historic fish town

First come first serve..., 2014-08-17
Captain: , Milwaukee, Wi. (798)

They don't take reservations. The very best time to arrive is between 12 noon and 1 o'clock.... If your running late and all is closed many boaters tie up at the gas dock (some leaving before they open to avoid overnite charges... Great Marine and town to explor...

Great stop with lots to see, 2014-08-09
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (949)

A very nice marina with newer docks and a new office shower building. Only a blocks walk to Fish Town with many shops nd restaurants. Grocery 2 blocks away.

New Bathrooms and bldg push it to 5 stars, 2014-07-03
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

This is the second time I've been here (first 5 years ago) the new bldg in classy and th ebathrooms top notch. Great depth in the newly dredged harbor I had 9' true depth at the slip. Lake

Great Daytime Stop, 2013-08-05
Captain: , Elk Rapids (130)

We put in at Leland for a few hours on 8/1/13. Dock staff were extremely friendly and helpful, arranging a slip for the visit. While they don't charge for dayuse, we gladly contributed cash as tips for docking help and for the common 'pizza fund' and considered it well spent.

Don't miss the smoked fish right near the marina and the Ice Cream uptown.

Harbor facilities are new and clean.

great port, 2013-07-27
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (445)

Watch the entrance in strong south or west winds, can be rolly entering. Floating docks with vertical standoffs so don't use fenders until docked. Very accommodating staff. Marina showers and lounge are in a new building, with a small laundry. Other comments on town are accurate. We tried for a reservation at riverside inn (restaurant) on each of our two night stay and they were booked.

Excellent Marina - Reduced Rates after Labor Day, 2012-09-11
Captain: , Detroit (767)

Great spot to stop. After Labor Day, the rates are reduced to $1 per foot. Don't miss the smoked fish sausage at Carlson's Fish Market at the head of the dock.

Great marina facilities, staff, and town, 2012-08-28
Captain: , LeClaire, Iowa (449)

Had not planned on stopping here but 2-4 ft waves on Lake Michigan changed our mind. What a nice marina next to a great little historic area - Fshtown, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Stayed two days waiting for the lake to calm down. Ate at Bluebird Restaurant - try the whitefish fresh off the boats - much better than Henry's Fish Restaurant. Nice decor and view of the river as well. Got some smoked fish from the fish place in Fishtown, did some botique shopping and had a great time. The Mercantile is only a block away and has a good selection of groceries. The Cheese store in Fishtown sells a number of craft beers. Enjoyed Strawberry Blonde. You really should put this stop on your itinerary.

Nice Place for One or Two nights, 2012-08-26
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1850)

The marina is very nice. Newish docks, with fuel and pump out. The fairways seem a bit narrow. Clubhouse with all the amenities is top notch. Friendly staff. Not so good wifi...had to come to clubhouse to get online. $2 per foot and diesel price is pricey, but they have a great location on the coast and whatever the market will bear. Leland is nice town. My wife and I have been trying to put our finger on it (Leland and Charlevoix) - a tourist destination without feeling touristy...if that makes sense.

A Must See, 2012-08-21
Captain: , St Louis (320)

The only thing that I can say bad about the marina is the $2.00ft, a little steep for the Great Lakes. With that being said, this is a must stay marina. Buy some smoked fish from the fishing village in the marina.
I don't think that I would want to spend a lot of time in Leland, unless you have transportation to get around, but for the short stay most everything is within walking.
You'll want to avoid the marina on the Wednesday after the Chicago Mackinac Race as it's a popular layover and you might have to raft off.

Excellent Facilities, 2012-07-25
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

Excellent boaters lounge, heads, and showers. New docks. Good protection behind breakwaters. Neat little town. Biked 3 miles to Good Harbor winery. Also visited Verterra Winery in downtown Leland. Good local grocery store. Dockage was $2/foot Including electricity.

Awesome views, 2012-04-05
Captain: , indiana (331)

The new marina is great and the awesome views of the islands havent changed. The facilities are first rate and town is close. Fishtown is amazing.

Great Marina, 2011-08-29
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4307)

New docks and marina building with beautiful showers, restrooms, and boaters' lounge. Helpful, knowledgeable harbormaster with numerous dockhands to assist. Interesting little town with library and museum. Great stop.

Lovely marina, 2011-08-25
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Great shopping & restaurants. Visit Fish Town for smokede fish.

very pleasant, 2011-08-20
Captain: , Westport,Ma (710)

everything you need is close by marina is very nice and calm beautiful building with great showers very helpful and friendly staff

Good place to be in bad weather, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Came into here after Charlevoix. Don't let the satellite photo fool you, this harbor has been rebuilt with additional dockage. The breakwater is well built and tall. This is a refuge harbor.

Came in here with weather forecast to be very windy, 20+ MPH predicted and it did. They raft off boats to one another if necessary, not matter what the value of the boat. They will not turn you away.

Town is good. Check out the Cove restaurant. Another local store is a good place to get fresh and/or smoked fish.

Beautiful new facilities, 2011-08-16
Captain: , Big Torch Key, FL (1987)

Beautiful new facilites with great power, but a weak WiFi on the docks. Good WiFi in the beautiful boaters lounge and on the porch. Well worth a one night stop if for no other reason to walk the docks on the river at fishtown. A unique little town with very good restaurants to choose from.

Leland Harbor, 2011-08-16
Captain: , Port Sheldon, MI (131)

Cozy docks for larger boats, but an excellent new facility, hook ups and a great shower / club house.

Pets are welcome but be sure to use the designated areas.

Leland is one of our favorite %u201Cup north%u201D towns by land, and by water it%u2019s even better. Busy little shops and boutiques%u2019 and great food / wine are available in fish town.

Leland Harbor, 2011-07-13
Captain: , Lake in The Hills, Illinois (542)

Excellent new facility although a bit pricey. The staff is extremely helpful and the facilities are very nice. The town is very quaint although busy. Excellent location to stop and relax.

Leland Harbor, 2011-07-02
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

The marina is first class with thier recent improvements last year.
Beautiful floating docks and many helpful staff. Resevations should be taken and upgrade the wi-fi, and I would give it a 5 Star rating.
Miss Joanie

Leland Harbor is a great place to stop., 2011-06-28
Captain: , Oriental, NC (1148)

This is a lovely quaint town with a fishing tradition. Carlsons still smokes their own fish and sells smoked White Fish, Trout, Salmon and Fish Sausage. Also, has fresh fillets. Harbor is 1st class for docking and protection. Great place to stop over or spend a few days.

Leland Township, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

New marina is nice but this is always a busy harbor so get here early. Great restaurants, shopping and art stores within a couple of blocks.

Great Staff, 2010-10-02
Captain: , FT Myers Beach (11)

Was broke down here for a week, the staff are very friendly and very helpful. Also a great place to duck away from a storm. Great transportation to Traverse City as well.

M/V Albino Wino

Excellent Transient Marina, 2010-09-21
Captain: , Belle Maer Harbor (166)

Very well run marina with super new facilities. Stayed here three days socked in on Cruise Around the Mitten. Great stay, excellent facilities, much better than the old docks and facilities. Gets a four only because it doesn't have long term ammenities like a pool, tennis courts, but this place isn't meant to be. It is a great place to stay for a few days, however. Great walking and good shopping town. Has some excellent restaurants.
Been here twice now and will stay again!!!

Wonderful facility, 2010-09-11
Captain: , Newport, RI (10275)

This is probably one of the nicest marinas that we've stayed at in a long time. The docks are in great shape, there's a wonderful boaters' lounge and the bathrooms/showers are sparkling clean.

A great port in a storm, 2010-09-04
Captain: , Collierville TN (977)

Small harbor but if there are seas, they will take you. We were stuck on the gas dock for 5 days due to 35mph winds. Staff very friendly. Nice restaurant one block into town. Fishtown is a great historic visit. Buy the smoked trout/samon/white fish or eave the stuffed smoked whitefish sausage is great. From there you can take a bus to Traverse City for a day for 3.00 each way (or half price for seniors.)

Do not miss this, 2010-08-13
Captain: , Tellico Marina (290)

Staff helpfull, facilities clean, pet area kinda OK...
Fishtown is not to be missed to the right of the marina!!
Town is nice...

leland Harbor, 2010-07-24
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Upgraded facilities are top notch with floating docks, new bath house with excellent facilities. For a slow boat this is a must stop location as it is 40 miles to Frankfort and 30 miles to Northport

Fishtown is OK, but mostly a bunch of T-shirt shops and the like inside the historic shacks.

Really, Really Nice!, 2010-06-07
Captain: , Grove, OK (337)

New docks, helpful staff and the new office/shower complex is open. The showers were really nice and clean. One of the nicest marinas we have stayed at in a long time! Leland is a fun town, with fishtown being a highlight. Dined at the Bluebird and the whitefish was really nice. Stop and get some smoked fish at Carlton's --- done really well.

Small but nice marina, 2009-10-05
Captain: , Pentwater, MI (415)

Very small so call ahead. Leland is a great little town. Loaded with tourists on summer weekends. Dine at the Bluebird; great meals at reasonable prices with a casual atmosphere.

Even More of a Good Thing, 2009-09-07
Captain: , Waukegan, IL. (50)

We have been stopping in Leland for many years. The harbor, Fish Town, The Bluebird all make for a memorable port call. The new facilities were not completed for the opening of the season, but the effort expended by the port staff to do their best to accomodate was outstanding. Porta Potties did not in anyway dimenish the enjoyment of Leland. As North Channel and Georgian Bay cruisers--we considered Leland, even incomplete, to be a delightful port. Cannot compliment the dock staff highly enough. I suspect the town fathers should get Sarah a pair of roller skates, her effort and delightful personality made our stay all the more delightful. Keep building--we look forward to seeing you all in the Spring.

Nice new docks, 2009-08-28
Captain: , Miami Beach, FL (274)

As of 2009, they have new docks. Beautifully done, if a little crowded for trawler-sized boats. The town is cute, grocery, post office, library. Only down-side were the 10 million gnats!

crowded, but they will make room., 2009-08-18
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

36 ft $39 in 07
we were rafted 2 deep but had utilities

Oh my, 2009-08-13
Captain: , fairland (2653)

For 60 cents foot, I am happy to shower on board. Best fuel price I have seen since New York

New Facilities, 2009-08-08
Captain: , Punta Gorda. FL (360)

The new docks are finished with a lot more capacity and many more slips than before. As a harbor of refuge they still do creative rafting to get everyone in.

They are selling fuel though the new bath house and harbormaster office is not yet open. The old bathhouse is gone. (Portapotties on site, ugh!)

Otherwise the fish village remains the same nifty place. Good shopping and restaurants within easy walking.

Cool little town and nice marina., 2009-07-23
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (1178)

What a neat old fish town to walk about. We only stopped in for groceries, but we will be returning. Very nice docks (fixed) and quick dock hands. It is worth stopping in to see this town.

Harbor of Refuge., 2009-05-19
Captain: , Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin (324)

Leland is a old Marina (Soon to be rebuilt) & fishtown with many places to eat. Great marina staff.

Great Port, 2009-03-08
Captain: , Sturgeon Bay, WI (287)

The facilities won't wow anybody, but the staff and dockmaster are always on the their game! We have pulled into Leland at times after being pummeled by "Lake Michigan 2 footers" only to see the entire marina jammed with other boaters of all shapes and sizes. No one is turned away and the cozy quarters create a wonderful community of boaters.

The smoked whitefish in the village is outstanding.

fishtown rocks, 2008-12-29
Captain: , Little Traverse Bay (246)

leland/fishtown is a must visit. the harbor staff will raft all day long. the town is unique. facilites are old, but charming. a renovation is underway to my knowledge for the 09 season.
