Superb service and and quick access to places, 2014-08-05
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (154)

Special thanks to Ken,the Harbor Master, and the marina staff for sa great time in Newport News this past weekend. While the rains dampened the docks, our dinner party in the Marina went without a hitch...and getting underway and back on our trip was too smooth. Great TV reception, clean heads, easy area access, and across the streer from a super restraunt. Thanks. We'll be back!

Good place to leave a boat, 2014-06-21
Captain: , Kelso, Wa. (834)

I agree with Cap'n Mitch. Great place to leave a boat. Great service and well looked after marina.Prices are reasonable and docks are well maintained and secure. Ken is a generous man.

Diesel price was $3.69 plus 6% tax

Good place to leave a boat, 2013-09-19
Captain: , Mullica Hill, NJ (688)

We pulled in there Sept. 12 to leave the boat for six weeks. We did not expect too much and were very surprised. Experienced help docking and they actually listened to us. Docks are in great condition. Restrooms and showers are modern and clean. Laundry is free. Ken (the dockmaster) walks the dock every morning to check on the boats. The marina is gated with combination locks for entry at night. A fair restaurant is within walking distance. There is nothing else nearby. When I asked about a bus to the airport, Ken offered to drive me there. Really friendly and helpful people.

Nice Marina, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Atlanta (100)

Nice basic marina. Not much in the way of facilities. Floating docks in mostlt good shape (finger piers a little ratty). Great rates.

Good place to stay, 2011-07-29
Captain: , Port of Cincinnati (30)

Leeward is a well priced Marina and liveaboard friendly (for a fee). They do have free laundry, and water, electricity Is a flat fee, and theyhavea fuel dock with pumpout facility.
It's a nice and clean marina with good floating docks and and easy to maneuver around In. The city is not bad. It's not scary unless you're used to the suburbs. Decent restaurant at the crab shack within walking distance and not much else... On busline to anywhere in city.

The charts say 6-9 feet but I saw 5 on the depthsounder coming in at low tide. James river is a nice little place to daysail and doesn't have all the crabtraps you see in the bay. Accesable to all of hampton roads. Good fishing as well.

Leeward marina, 2011-05-25
Captain: , Richmond VA (281)

Leeward marina is a city run marina that we stayed at for a few months when we first borough our boat to the Chesapeake Bay. The marina was in good condition and reasonably priced. While Leeward did have power and water it did not offer many of the other services larger marina%u2019s offer, laundry, internet, pool, or TV of any kind. Since it is a city run marina, it did charge tax if your stay was less than 3 months. Leeward has some drawbacks, first is its location. This part of Newport New is somewhat rundown and a bit scary at night; I would not walk outside the marina if I didn%u2019t need to. Unless your are going to boat up the James river (my home river) you would have to go through the gauntlet of fishing vessels that love to fish in the shipping channel near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor-Merrimac_Memorial_Bridge-Tunnel). I never enjoyed this part of the water the entire time I was at Leeward. Over all this is a high 2 star or low 3 star marina. Leeward provides all the basics you need for a safe harbor, just be careful with the tight entrance to the marina.
