Great restaurant and outdoor concert venue that allows dinghy raft-ups to listen to the concerts for free. Lots of fun on warm summer nights.

Reviews for Kona Kai Marina
Worst Experience With a Marina EVER, 2016-12-10
Captain: , Victoria (70)

If I could give these guys 0 stars I would. My family and I sailed down from Victoria, CA and decided we'd stay at Kona Kai for a month as a 'splurge' after a long voyage down. I had difficulty getting in touch with them and finally received an email asking for a slip request form to be filled out. I did so, and emailed it back and was told after waiting two weeks that I was confirmed, given a slip number and told to follow up closer to the reservation to confirm. Two weeks prior to our supposed arrival date, I emailed to follow up. No answer. I phoned and left a message. No response. Finally, I was able to reach the dock master, Adam. He confirmed that the slip we were assigned was GIVEN AWAY and that the fellow who took oure reservation was no longer with them. Okay. Ya. So, after a few very upset conversations with the dock master again ( who was extremely rude!) and the hotel manager, Hugh it was confirmed that we could not stay there. I requested my credit card info on file be destroyed and advised them that I was very upset and wouldn't be recommending them to anyone as a result of our treatment. A month later, I received an email asking how my stay was. What? I responded and told them I never stayed there and advised that I had a terrible experience and never got a booking. No response. Another month later I receive a receipt for payment. No joke. They CHARGED MY CARD. I was livid! After numerous attempts to reach them again I was advised that 'the captain checked in and got key fobs'. Say what!? We weren't even IN San Diego at this time. Unbelievable. After more fighting with them, they finally accepted that we did not stay there and said they'd refund our money. I'm still waiting for the credit to be put on my account. DO NOT stay here.

Very Good Marina Overall, 2014-12-31
Captain: , San Diego (180)

Been here 4 years, and it is one of the best marinas in the area but not cheap. Closest to the ocean. Clean docks, showers and heads. Restaurants near, but many are expensive. Plenty of businesses to get boat parts and services on Shelter Island. Gated parking for slip renters and guests, and fairly secure. Each main dock has large gate with electronic key enterance, but many people wait outside to slip in when slip renters enter or security is not great. Marina workers and dockmaster are friendly, but a little slow on fixing things. I would rated Kona 5 out of 5 if security was better.

Close to perfect, 2011-09-18

Right inside the entrance, on Shelter Island so close to marine services, $10 taxi to airport. Nice facilities although I suspect most residents do not use them much. Locked gate and friendly dock manager. Waiting for start of Baj Ha Ha.

A great facility, but for a general store I would give it a five out of five.

Outstanding Marine, 2011-07-19
Captain: , San Pedro, CA (290)

The first time I visited I was not impressed. That was 4 years ago. Now I feel like it's the best run marina in San Diego. The dockmaster could not be nicer and more accomodating. They have really stepped up the service. Great accomodations for visiting mariners.

Kona Kai Marina Multiple Use (2007 thru 2010), 2011-03-02

Excellent Marina for overseas visitors
First class maintenance facilities nearby
Good accomodation for medium to large sailboats
Very good security
Well maintained & clean
Moderately expensive

Long Time Visitor, 2010-08-15

We have been at the Kona Kai for the last 6 months and love it there. The access to the airport is awesome, you can land and be on the boat in 15 miutes. Pete the dockmaster is great to work with and the people who live there are very friendly and supportive. The marina is pet friendly.

You can walk to restuarants in the area but the shopping is minimal.

Two Month Vacation, 2008-01-20
Captain: , Shelter Island, CA (1)

Myself, my wife, 3 yr old son, and old beagle moved to the Kona Kai to spend a long working vacation, and love it. Pete the dockmaster is very nice and accomodating. All of the tenants that I have met are very friendly. The docks are new and other than some low tide problems very easy to get in and out of. ( we are on "b" dock right against the shore ) The pumpout station is really close and it is the closest marina to the ocean. I would recommend this marina to anyone.

Long time tenant, 2007-03-18
Captain: , San Diego (44)

As a ten year tenent of this marina, I recommend it.
The docks are new and all concrete, and the staff tries to be helpful. The electrical system was redone along with the new dock construction, and there is internet and cable TV service in each dock box.
Transients are welcome.
Boats up to 220 feet dock here, so the level of service is high (for them)
