Approach

Off Kirkcudbright bay there is an active firing range. Although the range operates a 'clear range' policy, it is advisable to call range safety vessel 'Gallovidian' on VHF ch 16 / 73 or +44 (0)7970 109814 (Gary McKie safety vessel operator).

The moorings are 2 miles up the river channel which is very well marked. First identify the two clear white transit beacons on Ross Island, keep them in line until entering the channel at the first pair of markers, then follow the well marked channel.

It's advisable to navigate the river HW +- 2.5 hours until familiar with the approach. Consult the HM for accurate details about depth in the channel.

Reviews for Kirkcudbright Marina
Lovely spot, great welcome, 2015-06-23
Captain: , Conwy, N. Wales (13850)

Kirkcudbright is a very pretty town located up the River Dee. Access is via a winding channel, mostly mud, and the channel can be in a slightly different place to the chart. However it is very well buoyed, with 10 additional buoys being layed in 2014.

We had a very warm welcome from Keith the harbourmaster, who helped us tie up and then gave us information about the town and the river navigation as well as good recommendations for restaurants and pubs. He recommends that you call in advance to allocate a berth. The toilets and showers are compact and a tight squeeze, but are very clean and in good condition with new electric power showers. All in all, an excellent spot up a green and pleasant river for a stopover, we're definitely going back!

Pretty and charming town, 2013-10-11

stay on the river side of the pontoon if you need to stay afloat. The river current can be rather strong so plan your approach to the pontoon with this in mind. The harbourmaster is very helpful, possibly easier to contact by mobile than vhf. Town itself is interesting and there are many quiet local attractions and walks. River is very well bouyed.
