Approach

Port side of Bassetts Island (South Channel) has better depth.

Use NOAA charts 13236 (1:20,000), 13229SC (1:40,000) and 13230 (1:40,000). Use tide tables for Newport. High tide is approximately 24 minutes later. Low tide is 18 minutes later. Multiply by 1.1 for height at high or low water. Mean tidal range is 4'.

From the North via the Hog Island Channel and the Cape Cod Canal. Give Wings Neck at least 500 yards of clearance as you round it. You may want to clear Q G G '1' at the southeastern end of Hog Island Channel before heading southeast into the harbor.

From the South and West. Straightforward approach except for Southwest Ledge and Seal Rocks which extend to R N '10,' about 0.9 nm west of Scraggy Neck. To clear these rocks, continue northeast in the Cleveland Ledge Channel until you are more than 1.0 nm north of Fl R 4s R '4'. This gives you clearance of Southwest Ledge as you turn east into the harbor.

Entering the outer harbor heading towards Bassetts Island, give RG N 'ER' plenty of room. This junction buoy identifies Eustis Rock, with a 5-foot spot just east of the marker.

At R G N 'ER' you have a choice of two entrance channels, north and south of Bassetts Island. The north channel has an 8-ft (mlw) controlling depth and winds its way through Pocasset Harbor. Stay close to all the buoys and don't cut corners. The south channel (controlling depth: 6-ft mlw) leads directly into Red Brook Harbor, and while it is a bit more shallow, it is also less convoluted and confusing.

Kingman Yacht Center sits inside (east) of Bassetts Island, with its mooring field to port (north) of the channel running into the harbor. The marina monitors VHF channel 71.

Reviews for Kingman Yacht Center
Kingman Aug 2016, 2016-09-27
Captain: , Danvers MA (60)

We were traveling as a group. For our boat, our service was excellent, but we would have liked to have been docked nearer each other. It took a couple of slip changes to get us nearby. People were helpful and kind. The docks and facilities are beautifully maintained.

Nearby activities - Basset Island beaches are great and the cove is excellent for kayaking. Nearby restaurant, Chart House, was marginal, at best - expensive yet plain food - ran out of specials early and everyday - drink selection poor For example, no mojitos - can you imagine summer bar without mojitos?

Very Helpful Launch Driver, 2016-09-10
Captain: , Port Washinton, NY (10)

He was helpful and went out of his way to pump the fuel for us. It enabled us to leave very early the next day which we needed to do.

Helpful folks, 2016-09-06
Captain: , Tern Harbor (10)

Kingman is always a great place to stay on a mooring for a few days. This year I broke down at the gas dock during the height of the Chart Room lunch rush. The helpful members of the staff quickly towed me to my mooring for free and set up an opportunity to work on my boat the next day, a Saturday in August. Luckily I was able to reset the computer and both engines worked fine. Thanks for your help Kingman team!

Always a fun place to stop for a night, 2016-08-30
Captain: , Boston (10)

Great harbor, great launch service, showers need to be upgraded, super food as always, love the piano bar..................wish thge launch ran later at night so we could stay at the bar and party past 10 PM.

It would be aplus if there was a restaurant for breakfast at the marina.

Plan on returning next year.

Good dock - liked the all encompassing fee - , 2016-08-23

And great food at the chart room. Lobster roll enough for three meals!

Captain: , Honolulu (531)

Spent three nights on a mooring ball, 8/19-21/2016. Great restaurant, free launch service, clean facilities. Couildn't do our pumpout because they had dropped the smaller hose fittings in the water, no mention of trying to find new one? Stuff happens... $50 per night for mooring.

Laid back and peaceful, 2016-08-22
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (30)

Enjoyed a couple nights docked in the back cove area of the marina. Very quiet marina. A pool would be a big upgrade, as there's not much one can do if your a transient limited to your boat. The Chart Room is nice to have onsite, but it gets very busy and you should make a reservation in advance of your arrival. The location is very good if you want to take a day trip up the Cape Cod Canal. We had a small issue, as our assigned slip had another boat in it when we returned from a day out on the water with friends. It was after hours, so we just had to find an open slip to use. Wasn't a big issue, but shouldn't happen if things are managed properly. A great spot if you have a dinghy, as there's a great island that you can visit easily and enjoy a semi-private beach day.

Always a pleasure!, 2016-08-21

We always enjoy our stay at Kingman! The kids love it too. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. The docks are beautiful and well kept. Great spot!!

Bassett's Island and the Chart Room.....WOW!

All good on a Thursday, 2016-08-19
Captain: , Marion, MA (10)

Our online mooring request received a prompt response. When we arrived we were promptly shown to our mooring. On trips ashore, the young lady driving the launch was polite, pleasant and handled the launch well. Launch service ending at 2100 did not cause a problem because we had made a dinner reservation at the Chart Room, but had we not the queue for dining could have put pressure on catching the last launch from shore at 2045. (Launch may run later on weekend evenings.)

Great Service, 2016-08-19
Captain: , Mattapoisett (10)

At slip. Dock hands great coming & going. Helped out with electrical line when ours was defective. No charge. No deposit. Great attitude. Only downer was the Dockwa reservation could e found & our preferences lost. Got fixed but time consuming & confusing

Okay, but there were issues, 2016-08-16
Captain: , Danversport (10)

I was a little surprised when I was given a slip with 1.5 ft of space between my boat and the the other with my fenders on the finger Pier. They dock help were there but I thought the tight space was a little unnecessary. I also asked for 2-30amp hookup. They didn't give me thst either. There solution was a pigtail they found, that was useless. It looked like 2-50 amp to 1-50 amp. Chart Room was good.

The only improvement that could be made to bring to 5 star rating status are the heads/showers. Upgrades could include shower stalls, additional hanging hooks and a bench

A Great Birthday Spent at Kingman Yacht Center!, 2016-08-10
Captain: , Gloucester, MA (20)

I was able to reserve a mooring at Kingman on a weekday night with very little advance notice. Then we decided we'd rather have a slip and they were able to accommodate that, too. There was plenty of help at the dock upon arrival. The Chart Room is a great time-where else can you get the best frozen mudslides at a take-out window and watch the sun set over the bay? Their food was great also. It was a wonderful experience, and priced reasonable. We'll be back.

A perfect place with a perfect staff, 2016-08-08

Everything was great. They just need a change and soap machine for the laundry. Prices on the drinks were a little high. Dock hands were very helpful too.

As expected for a 1st class marina, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Montreal (717)

Good place, very efficient staff. Every body know what to do there. This place is well organized: very responsive launch service, mooring reservation service, answers on the radio, fuel dock...
For your info, there are extra restrooms further up in the hill. Nobody knows that and wait for a free spot. A sign could help.
Also, I think this place miss a room where boaters could hang out to plug in a laptop and do internet surfing. The wifi does not goes up to the mooring field and the Chart Room restaurant is not the place for this.

Kingman Yacht Center Visit, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Mystic, CT (20)

Had what I would call an "average" experience. Mooring/Dock staff was helpful, but did not seem very interested. On-site restaurant was mediocre at best. The free launch service was good, and the person at the little store for ice and sundries was very friendly and personable. All in all, this place is an excellent stopping-off point before going through the Cape Cod and their boat servicing facilities look impressive. It's just not a place to "hang-out".

Enjoyed KYC moorings, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Fairhaven (10)

We stayed at the Kingman Moorings for a weekend in July. We arrived at 1030. The marina staff said that someone was on the ball until 11. So we got a pump out to kill some time; worked out because Kingman has a large dock for fuel, waste and water. By the time we were done, our ball was free. Balls are separated alphabetically. Call launch on 71 and they can guide you effectively. Stay on top of the markers, the channel is supper narrow and super shallow outside. We had fun, and the Chart room was a great time at night.

Very Nice Place, 2016-07-27
Captain: , E. Greenwich RI (10)

Not as hard to get into as it looks on the chart. Bassett Island is a great place to swim. Lots of opportunities to use the dinghy.

Kingman yacht center review, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Winthrop,Ma. (11)

Excellent. Kingman's is top notch in every way. Launch service is super, radio contact is answered back immediately.

Kingman Yacht Center, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Mystic (10)

Dock hands are very young and inexperienced. when trying to get off the dock, the dock hand couldn't hold our stern line, so dropped it in the water where it promptly got wrapped around the prop. They do not have a diver so Sea Tow brought one and it cost us $400 to get it fixed . The dockhand could have cleated or thrown the line up on the boat. The dock master's only assistance was to call Sea Tow. Will definitely not recommend them!

Should be my home marina, 2015-09-06
Captain: , Salem, MA (234)

Provides everything I expected and more. Never saw this before, but they offer to provide anything from West Marine catologue to your boat the next morning at West Marine cost or less (no delivery charges). Keep that in mind if you are headed this way and need something. Arrived early in the day and stopped at fuel dock and got fuel, water, pump out, and check in very efficiently. Then anchored out at Bassett Island for lunch, fishing, swimming, beach walking, and dinner before heading back to the mooring. Achoring at beach for the night is just as good, but without the outstand shore services of this marina. Didn't need the launch service but used the large dinghy dock once and fuel dock (twice) for transvering provisions and crew. Rastaurant looks great. They also have a great bar on the lawn overlooking the harbor.

Great stopover, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Lewes, DE (424)

Stopped here for a night on our way to Martha's Vineyard from Duxbury. Channel coming in looks intimidating but is really very negotiable. Staff was very helpful and the free launch service was great to go ashore for dinner. The Chart Room is hopping place. In the launch we met another sailor who gave me some good intel about the passage through Woods Hole. Helped a bunch and we had a smooth passage.

Great Marina in well protected harbor, 2015-08-25
Captain: , Hull, MA (700)

Kingman Marina offers transient moorings in a well protected harbor with free launch service at $50/night. The marina has a ships store, restaurant (The Chart Room) and fuel dock. Great harbor for cruising around in your inflatable and enjoying the great beaches.

Well run Marina, 2015-08-18
Captain: , Saquatucket (105)

We have been here several times and always enjoyed our stay. Well protected, well run and plenty of conveniences. The Chart Room for dinner or drinks, the beach fro swimming or hikeing, the marina has a store and showers. Fuel and water and free launch service.

Top Notch Facility but Shallow Water, 2015-08-12
Captain: , Yarmouth, ME (180)

It's a really nice full service marina. Showers, resturaunt, basic shops, laundry, etc. are all provided. Be careful at low tide. We noticed a few shalow spots but did not have any trouble with our 5.5' draft sailboat.

Good wind and weather protection, 2015-08-10
Captain: , Manchester NH. (285)

Entire staff was very helpfull during our stay on 7/30/15. The pumpout was full so we only took on some water and picked up a mooring for the night. Launch service was prompt and the operator had lots of local knowledge. We enjoyed a meal at the Chart Room Restaraurant and a restfull night. Note: We came in through the North Channel and departed through the South Channel at just past low tide with no depth issues. We will be back.

Sticker Shock!, 2015-08-02
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (450)

We were looking forward to spending a night here and had an adventurous time coming through the south channel at low tide! However, the AC reviews were accurate and we had a fun ride.
Good people, beautiful harbor and nice docks, but when we went up to the office to check in, we were met with the sticker shock of $4.50/foot as we were expecting the $1.75 posted in AC!
Lesson learned: Call for current charges!
Nice place, though, and we will be back.

Great place to wait for canal current, 2015-07-16
Captain: , Narragansett Bay, RI (416)

The channel on the way in looks tight, but it's pretty easy to navigate and we carried 6.5ft draft in at mid-tide easily. Never saw less than 10ft, often more.

People are great, easy fuel dock and the restaurant, The Chart Room, has decent food and nice atmosphere.

Great spot, 2015-04-02
Captain: , Buzzards Bay, MA (296)

A nice, well kept, clean marina. Access through the channels can be a bit sketchy at times especially with the bars along the South Channel around Bassetts Island. Assistance for me in the marina has always been prompt and professional. Looking forward to the thaw, the start of the 2015 season and a Chartroom mudslide.

Great Facility, 2014-10-28
Captain: , Portland, Maine (845)

We stopped here on the way through from the canal. Showers were clean and the folks very friendly. We did not have any work done but they have a reputation of being very good. No shopping facilities nearby and their on site restaurant and store were closed for the season. We did not expect them to be open so no problem. They have a good chandlery.

Regular stop on our way to the islands, 2014-08-16
Captain: , Marblehead, MA (50)

We always stop here after transitting the canal from Boston (6 knot sailboat). Very friendly staff, easy to navigate fuel dock, plenty of moorings with free launch until 10:30PM. The Chart Room is a nice place great fresh seafood (nothing fried). No problem carrying 4' draft through the south channel at low tide - YMMV.

You really do get what you pay for, 2014-07-06
Captain: , Cataumet MA (149)

I'm a seasonal renter here. I've learned over many years and many different marinas that prices and service levels vary wildly. And, service is not always in line with the price. But, at Kingman's it really is. Everything is pretty high-end here. The professional staff, the well-maintained facility, the restaurant and tiny shops. Over time I've learned that I can trust these people to do what they say and help when asked.

Also, given a few comments below I feel the need to comment on the quality of the work from the yard. It is simply the best I have come across in two decades of cruising New England. Yes, it is going to be pricey as they don't give anybody a 'deal.' But, the work gets done right (every time -no kidding). My 1997 Hunter has had its share of issues. Once the staff at Kingman spends time on it, what was broken stays fixed. That's something that I can't say of most of the other yards I've dealt with.

Not just your average Marina!, 2014-04-27
Captain: , Sagamore Beach (10)

Clean, friendly, helpfull, knowledgeable, reasonable pricing, run with boaters in mind.

Clean, Professional and Attractive, 2013-09-11
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

we were here for 5 days in June with a mechanical issue. The staff could not have been more professional. Here again on our cruise north to Maine this week and again found this to be a wonderful stop. The moorings are $35/nite after Labor Day. The launch service is only to 6 but is great. Gretchen handles the launch with ease and competency. As she says, the cape turns off "like a light switch" after labor Day so it is a quiet stay. We will stay here agian, very convienient for a passage stop north or south.

Nice Marina, But........, 2013-07-26
Captain: , Little River, SC (1967)

Spent 5 days here at a friends sock in the back basin which is very tight. Staff was helpful, helped us tie up and hook up utilities. The showers and restroom facilitries were pretty good but were not cleaned daily. Ate at the restaurant which had good food but priceyI had their lobster salad in a tomato but asked for it on a bulky roll. Only got half as much lobster as a friend who got it in the tomato. For $26 they could have put the extra lobster on the side.
Needed an A/C technician since my unbit stopped working. I found a burned wir but was reluctant to just replace it woithout knowing the underlying cause. They sent a tech, who looked at it, cut the burned part of the wire off and reconnected it to the circuit breaker. Spent 10 minutes on the boat all total. They charged me $106. I complained to the VP-Operations and found no sympathy. It was the minimum charge (1 Hr @ $106). The tech did not come special for me as they had 4 other boats that needed A/C repairs. I was and felt ripped off. I would not come here for repair work again.

Excellent staff & facility, 2012-10-01
Captain: , Annapolis (451)

Stopped last year twice. First time to have equiptment repaired. They worked with raymarine & got it fixed. Second was to have equiptment installed after being fixed. Heard of family emergency, had to leave the boat to return home as Hurricane was approaching. They did a FANTASTIC job of caring for us & the boat.
Highly recommend this facility. Friendly, well trianed, professional!

Great staff, 2012-08-06
Captain: , Great island boat yard Harpswell, Me (61)

Staff very helpful. No provisioning nearby. Store at yard used to have a few things but no longer. Very protected in marina. Heads and showers are a little sketchy and needed attention when we were there. Restaurant just ok food wise but staff teriffic. A little tricky navigating in and out. Better to arrive at high tide for an easier passage.

A resort marina with a top-notch boatyard, 2012-07-10
Captain: , Cataumet, MA (58)

Kingman has the best of both worlds. A family-owned and operated small business, big and busy enough to attract great people and top-notch talent. I wouldn't keep my boat anyplace else.

Good, but...., 2012-06-25
Captain: , Newport (404)

spent three nights on the mooring. Launch shut down at 5...argh. After July 1 it runs later. Staff disorganized. They misled a sloop with 7.5 ft draft and she ended up aground. $288 to clean carb in outboard. Extensive yard facility. Restaurant is just ok, but packs em in.

Great Staff-helped me in 911, 2012-06-25
Captain: , onset, mass. (10)

Unfortunately/embarassingly i have to share this experience. Recently I tied up at a mooring and got transported in for lunch at the Chart Room. After the meal we were transported back to the mooring. The young lady asked what mooring and I said U16 and she said we are here but no boat. We looked to the right and about 400 yards away my boat was helplessly drifting away. She immediately called into home base at Kingman and requested another boat, since her transport boat couldn't sail across the apparent shallow water afar. Within minutes, two young men in a boat bee-lined to my boat, secured it and brought it back safely to the mooring. The coolness, coordination of efforts and a happy ending must be shared by all of those involved here. The boat wasn't secured enough to the mooring, my fault. Disasaster was averted by this obvious well trained staff. Thank goodness, the boat didn't hit any other boat, rocks, wall, etc.....the stars lined up for this runnaway boat of 22 feet. What clearly could have been a monumental disaster was quickly taken care of by the staff. Kudos to the Kingman staff.

Good services, Nice Place to Stay, 2012-02-23
Captain: , Salem MA (177)

I usually spend a few weeks a summer at Kingmans cominfg or goign for vacation. the mooring area is well protected, the launch service is good and the yard seems to provide a full range of services.

The nearest food and 7-11 are about a 1 mile walk north, although the marina has a small store.

Kingman Great stop, 2012-01-04
Captain: , Peterborough, NH (30)

Great facilities, prefessional efficent staff, and they are friendly too! Very good restaurant and bar. Gift shop, supply shops.

A very pleasant stay, 2011-09-11
Captain: , Byram, CT (698)

We stayed on a transient mooring, and took on fuel. The staff was very courteous and helpful, and the facilities were good.

This is a protected harbor and one of the most scenic we have seen so far in Buzzards Bay, or anywhere. Bassetts Island's beaches looked very inviting, but we didn't go ashore on the island.

Nice marina but a little isolated - be careful getting there, 2011-09-10
Captain: , Boston (70)

Good facilities but you are limited to the dock side restraunt for food. It is expensive and the food is mediocare. The marina is situated in a residential area and I did not find any local shopping.

If you have time in the afternoon take your dingy over to Bassetts Island for a swim and a look around. The water is warm (particularly if you have just left Cape Cod Bay), the bottom is sand and the slope is gradual - great for the kids.

If you draft 5 -6 ft. plan carefully getting into this marina. I went in on the North Channel and out on the south channel and didn't feel real comfortable in either one. Pay careful attension to the markers on the north channel as the sometimes double back on themselves. The south channel is a bit more straight forward but is shallower at low tide.

Good Facilities- Not great, 2011-08-27
Captain: , Falmouth (10)

For the money. Look at your contract carefully and be aware of your responsibilites. I understand that if you have dockage space and a storm is threatening they force you to either have your boat hauled or move to a mooring-- and they charge you for the mooring! If money is the thing they know how to maximize their share of it.

Great Marina, Excellent Reasonably Priced Service! After having an engine overheating problem in the Canal Kingmans serviced the engine quickly and at a fair price to resolve our problem. All the staff was very eager to help and very friendly. Would visit again in a heartbeat

We've stayed here several times and it's really very good. Excellent service, well protected, and a restaurant right off the docks. It's also a great haven if (or more accurately when) you exit the Cape Cod Canal and find yourself facing the bucking bronco ride of your life and decide to bail out.

John & Tim helped me out in a flash with an urgent diesel engine problem. Professional, competent, and affordable pricing.

From the yard manager to the launch operator this is a high quality operation. Full service and loads of hand holding when needed. I love the place.

I've been at the their moorings and at the docks. Each time there, the service has been great. There is a tender service to the moorings.

The staff has always been helpful. Groceries are biking distance away and the on site restautrant is GREAT. Get reservations well ahead of time for the restautrant. However it is a little far from other civilization.

The main office is helpful in local knowledge and getting parts & repairs.

Pay close attention to the chart for getting in and out of this harbor and you won't go wrong.

Dingy to the nearby island/beaches for a great time.
