Dredged and natural channel between Largo Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Part of channel is very narrow. One corner is labeled as dangerous between R16 and G17. Turn west at G19 to marina. It would be a good idea to check with the marina to see if any of the tour boats are using the channel.

It was reported that at full moon, super low tide a boat hit something between the low spots of R4 and G5.

Reviews for John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Marina
Excellent Stop, 2017-03-08
Captain: , Charleston, SC (210)

Stayed here a week waiting for a weather window to Bahamas. Staff was fantastic. All hands helped with docking with strong cross winds. Mostly a park and dive center, but has slips for 3-4 big boats and 6-8 small boats. Groceries, hardward, west marine, good restaurants all within 1 mile walk. If you want a ride, call uber. don't use taxi, cars and drivers are filthy, late and discourtous.

Very Nice Place, 2017-02-23
Captain: , Corpus Christi (356)

We stayed here for a week and totally enjoyed it. We stayed in a slip and in the mooring field. Used all the facilities and everyone was very helpful and friiendly especially Lee and Scott at the dock.
Restroom and shower facilities were clean.
As others have said, restaurants and grocery stores are close by.
We did thepark snorkeling trip and really enjoyed the reef.

What a Gem!, 2016-11-30
Captain: , Seabrook, NH (172)

We stayed for five nights in November, and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the conditions out on the reefs were poor for snorkeling, but we enjoyed the park itself, and had a lot of fun exploring the mangroves. We actually fished quite a bit in the mangroves, and cught some nice mangrove snapper! Can you say, "Fish Taco!" Yummm!

The people were terrific, and Mike Merritt especially was a wealth of knowledge, helping us figure out where to snorkel, where to fish, and where to eat lunch out in Key Largo!

The campground restrooms were really clean, and overall we really enjoyed our time at Pennekamp.

One of Florida's great state parks, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Milwaukee WI (939)

We choose to come south in early January 2016 when weather wouldn't permit us to go across to the Bahamas... A great decision. Despite the rough conditions of the docks, we were safe and secure and comfortable for our five day stay. We enjoyed exploring the mangroves by dinghy. Water was too cool for swimming at the beach. The glass bottom boat tour was informative and much fun. The visitor center exhibits and lectures gave us a good insight into our surroundings.

With friends living nearby we were lucky to have a car to do shopping and dining. There are many choices but none that I would consider walkable along a busy highway.

Our crew had to get back to Ft Lauderdale airport and we found there is a shuttle service to pick up right at the park... Very convenient and cost effective.

The entrance channel from Hawks Channel is well marked but water outside the 'Bowling Alley' is very thin! We went aground upon exiting within the channel at low tide with our 4.5' Draft despite the chart showing six feet (near markers 6 and 7).
Luckily we were on a rising tide.

Nice place to stay, 2016-02-27
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (3163)

3 8 2015 We spent eight days on a mooring and two days in a slip. Moorings are in shallow water at low tide 5-6 feet. Sandy bottom in mooring area. Moorings are in excellent shape and easy to pick up pennant line. Scott the dock master is very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The rest rooms are clean and well kept and the showers in the camping area are the same with laundry area in the same. No see-ums come out by slips if no wind but with wind are not a problem. No bugs by moorings the eight days we were there. Power boats, SUP, kayaks, canoes are there for rental and two beaches with nice facilities. Nice visitor center and concession stand for food and Ice cream. Pump out is included at the main dock but no fuel available for the public. No finger piers at slips. 2 28 2016 Stayed at slip for 14 days. Scott the dockmaster is great. Publix grocery store a short bike ride away south in a plaza. Gas station with some groceries just south of the park enterance. Facilities clean & well kept again.

A great way to experience the Keys, 2016-01-18
Captain: , Charleston, SC (74)

I had called ahead to verify that I could bring our 48' Pilothouse Trawler into this marina. Scott, the dock master was very helpfull with clear instructions about coming in the channel and docking. We had no problem, but do contact him before attemping a visit.
Scott was always very helpful with everthing and we enjoyed his attention to detail for our 14 day stay. All the staff at Pennekamp was very friendly and went out of their way to make sure you had a great visit.

Be sure to check out the Pennekamp State Park website for things to do during your visit. The activities offered are on par with any high end resort. We took snorkle trips, swam at the beach and kayaked the many mangrove trails.

It is also a short bicyle trip to Publix or West Marine. We are looking forward to returning again to this magical place.

Nice Place!, 2015-03-24
Captain: , Sault Sainte Marie, MI (54)

What a beautiful hidden gem! Staff very friendly and helpful. Grounds are clean, price is right. If you like snorkeling, kaiaking, or going out to the reef this is the place. Only negative is the docks. Can only get off your boat at bow or stern.
The entrance/exit to the ocean is through the mangroves. Just beautiful.

Four star Facility Two star docks, 2015-03-17
Captain: , Charlestown (946)

Other reviews say it. Great people, great facility and fairly convenient to shoping and some restaurants wit a bit of a walk. Docks definitely need upgrading and repair. It can be dangerous getting on and off your boat. I slipped and almost took a dive in. A ladder at each slip would be fine with a stern tie. So many remakes on the dock conditions and you would think they would do something before someone really gets hurt.

nice showers, 2015-03-16
Captain: , Illinois (2471)

The new showers in the campground are as nice as you will find in a state park.
The docks are lacking. There are no finger piers. You must dock bow or stern in, either way it will be most difficult to exit or board your boat. The pilings are loose. It's past time for a dock overhaul.

great location, crappy dock, 2014-08-14
Captain: , Sarasota, FL (56)

The location of this park is great and scott the harbour master is awesome. I loved everything about this visit except for one thing...the marina slips. The dock is ackward to use and its tricky climbing to and from it as there is no finger pier to tie up along side. Its either nose in or stern in, the posts are also starting to get old so are missing cleats and are very wobbly. they do have water and electric hookup at the docks. shallowest depth i saw was 5 ft coming up the channel.

Great place, 2013-11-14
Captain: , Miami (100)

Low priced, good facilities and a safe harbor. The "beach" is not great for swimming. Scott who runs the rental boat biz is a great guy and very helpful. There are restaurants and shops in walking distance. Planning to return in couple of weeks.

Made for us, 2013-03-01
Captain: , Racine (121)

We trailer a small 21' Ranger Tug. This is a favorite spot for us - excellent boat ramp, clean facilities, friendly staff, good access to the reef for snorkeling, many other park activities available.

The slips are a bit of a struggle but that just means we don't have to make reservations or get limited in how long we can stay.

Five-star park with two star docks, 2013-02-27
Captain: , Algonac, MI (1659)

Did not like the climb up to the fixed docks from our boat, this can be dangerous for people without good balance/flexibility. The view is gorgeous and the park has great beaches and an interesting aquarium and visitor's center

Secluded small marina in state park, 2013-02-25
Captain: , Plantation Yacht Harbor, Islamorada, Fla. Keys (4666)

I didn't know that the state park had a seperate marina accepting transient boaters until I actually walked over and met the dockmaster. Only a few slips, but what a location. Would rate higher if restaurants, grocery and supplies were closer. The basin is well protected and the channel is narrow and winding, but deep and wide enough for the large glass bottom park boat to make the trip several times daily [aprox 26' beam, 4' draft].

Pleasantly surprized!!, 2012-06-06
Captain: , Wanakena, NY (749)

Low activety at marina. Great value for $52 plus tax. We had a great time and will be back.
Visitors center was fun along with swim area. Great spot for kids.
Big negative for us was the almost totally unprotected cement post you must deal while docking on the 1 remaining transient slip which is difficult to get into.
Great and friendly service.
Don't miss the Cuban restaurant, Marlins, immediately across Rt. 1. Doesn't look like much but great food (try the Cuban sandwitch) and the delicious Cuban esspresso shots.

Marina with State Park Amenities, 2012-04-30
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4257)

Very protected, small harbor for a safe haven in stormy weather. Hiking trails, beaches, showers, laundry, aquarium, good access to retail, Publix and West Marine. Snorkel tour, dive tour, and glass bottom boats operate from harbor, but at no wake speeds. After 5pm, everything closes and the docks are quiet and private.

Not Really a Marina, 2012-02-20
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (323)

Be aware that this is not a marina; it's a state park with very limited accomodations for big boats (2?), but with good accomodations for handicapped boaters. There are good showers and laundry facilities within the RV area, but it's a bit of a walk for a shower. No courtesy car. Free WiFi and very friendly and helpful docksmaster and assistant dockmaster (Scott and Joe). The park is lovely, with walking trails, an aquarium, and dive and snorkel trips available - the dive shop staff is excellent. Bike trails along Hwy. 1 make for a fairly easy ride to Publix or West Marine to the famous Fish House Restaurant. (We liked the food, but it was a bit too crowded for our taste.)
The finger pier on the slip is short, so if you enter bow-in you may have to exit the boat under or over its bow rails.
We stayed in the slip for a couple of nights, leaving our bikes ashore, and then moved to a mooring ball from which we could dinghy to shore.

Small lovely Marina, 2011-01-27
Captain: , Stuart FL (835)

Not many large boats come here. If you do not want to back in then stay away! Tidal station at Key Largo South Sound read 1 foot. The lowest water we saw was 7.5 feet until we reached Marker 19 where one turns left to go into the marina. There we saw lowest reading of just over 5 feet. However I think I got too close to the marker when turning.

Marina is lovely with lots of trails, boat rentals for exploring.

In short a bit tricky getting in but very pretty once tied up.
