Reviews for Joe Wheeler State Park
[UPDATE - August 2017] Wonderful Setting -- Beautiful Fall Colors, 2017-08-10
Captain: , Prattville, AL (300)

UPDATE: Please see my review from our previous visit for more and note that as of today (10 August 2017) the marina/lodge wifi is still virtually inoperative.

This is a good place to visit unless you want or need (as we do) reliable access to the internet.

I have changed my star rating from four to three because, despite nearly two years of supposedly working on the wifi system, it still works only about 10 percent of the time.

Even if you are in the lodge, the system is unreliable so it is not a matter of distance. In fact, we have a top rate wifi extender on our boat and despite getting a powerful signal from the facility's routers those routers' connections to the internet are virtually non-existent.

The helpful staff has assured us that they are working on the issue, just as they did in 2015, but at the same time they are blaming the problem on the trees. I do not think that the trees are the issue because there are no trees inside the lodge and we have been in many places around the world that are more heavily forested and still manage to have better access to the internet.

That said, everything I said in my original review still applies.

If it were not for the unreliable wifi service here this would easily be a four- or five-star marina experience.

------ Original Review -- 10-31-2015 ------
We came for the AGLCA Rendezvous and decided to stay another month or two because the place is beautiful and restful. Fall is here and we have front row seats! The marina manager and staff are very friendly, helpful, flexible, and accommodating. The facilities are nice, but amenities are fairly limited if there's a crowd -- one shower each for men and women, one washing machine, two dryers. The lodge is quite nice and the restaurant is comfortable. We have had friendly and efficient service there and found the food to be good, but not great. Although, I must say their fried chicken is excellent and I have heard people rave about their prime rib. We live and work aboard our boat, so internet connectivity is important to us. The marina Wi-Fi is spotty, at best, and the lodge is not much better, although it does offer a couple comfortable places to set up and work, if you want to get away from your boat for a while. We are alone on the dock, so there should not be anybody else competing for data, but we have to use our ATT mobile Wi-Fi about 90 percent of the time because the marina's Wi-Fi is either inoperable or unbearably slow. As I type this, I have two bars on my ATT smart phone and tablet. I've heard anecdotally that Verizon's coverage is not very good here.Getting into and out of the marina is simple. There is plenty of water and lots of room to maneuver. Bottom line: Joe Wheeler State Park Marina is a great stop. It would easily rate five stars if it had a couple more showers and increased laundry capacity.

Best State Park Marina , 2016-11-16
Captain: , Somerville, TN (201)

Great weekend destination or overnight stay.

The floating docks are in great shape and the breakfast buffet was perfect.

The location is wonderful with easy access off the river. The deer were abundant during early morning and evening.

Great Stop, 2016-05-04
Captain: , St Petersburg, FL (115)

Came in after dark. No marked channel but good water all the way to the dock. Marina only open Thur-Sun in the off season but can dock and register at the lodge desk.

Don't understand the ratings, 2015-11-16
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

Not a fan. No one came to help tie up. Was rudely told on the radio to find the front desk and check in -- not an easy task when you have no idea where you're going. Never once saw anyone from the marina -- just unfriendly voices over the radio saying to "just pick a slip".

Very well run marina, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (728)

We stayed here 10/13-10/20/15 to attend the AGLCA rendezvous. There were about 60 boats and they did a great job making room for everyone including moving some regular slip holders so we could all be together. Nice state park with hiking trails, even got in a round of golf while there.

Beautiful stop, recommended, 2015-10-08
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1804)

Beautiful spot and setting. Nice floating docks, good walking , biking and hiking, not near town. Diesel $2.90. Rate $1/ft. Buffet in restaurant was OK, service was horrible. Serve three meals per day. Great spot for annual looper meeting Mid October.

Best Marina I have Ever Been In, 2015-05-08
Captain: , Currently living aboard and cruising the Gulf Coast (260)

We planned on staying for several months and stayed 11 months. We were the only full time live-aboards and pretty much had the place to ourselves all winter long. This place is truly country living with all of the amenities. It is nature at it's finest. Great view, great hiking trails and tons of deer all over the place. Although somewhat isolated, the locals are always offering rides to town.
The RV park entrance is over a mile away and you wont even know they existed. The Golf course is hidden from view by hills and trees and the lodge around the is bend is fairly un-noticable from the marina area.

Nice place but lacks ammenities, 2014-10-15
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI (684)

For a marina this size it is hard to belive that they don't have showers available for transient boaters. The resort hotel did make available a couple of rooms for a larger rendezvous with 47 boats at the dock. But no shower rooms and only 1 washer and 2 dryers for the entire marina.
End of the season and the Marina store had very little to offer.
The restaurant is nice and food good but not great.
Will say they have some nice hiking trails and it is quiet. While here we had Tornado warnings and the staff were not going to let people bring pets into the facility until pressed.
To me that's like saying you can come in but leave your kids on the boat.
Fuel prices are average, grounds are clean and well kept, Staff is nice. But the facility needs updating.

Great Stop for every reason, 2014-08-17

Very quiet during the week in August, nice pool and good breakfast. Should have stayed longer, will visit on return trip.

Captain: , scottsboro, Al. (141)

We backed into the West side docks in front of the three story lake Side apartment complex, we like a pm shaded cockpit. Four bars of wifi in this location, short walk to pool and restaurant. Laundry is a hike, it's in the marina store building next to the fuel docks. Dockage $1.00 @ ft, pay at lodge front desk. Still the most scenic marina stop in this area of the Tennessee river, entrance to cove two miles up river from lock on North bank.

Nice peaceful stop, 2013-10-24

Nice marina, great lodge good food. Spent a week during Fall Rendeavous would definitely recommend to others plenty of depth and good docks.

Clean, well maintained marina. Walk a short distance to the Joe Wheeler Stae Park Lodge for good restaurant. Had to go to the lodge to get good WiFi.

Nice but very ISOLATED, 2013-10-20
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Long way from anything, Very isolated. great if you wanna good dock, with power, wifi and water, and a lodge to eat in. Nice walking paths. Nothing else here.Pretty area.
, also Cable ok but only on the transient docks, not elsewhere.
Prices great,

State park, great staff, 2013-10-18
Captain: , Chapin, South Carolina (410)

A very nice state park - marina manager was great and worked very hard to be sure you had a great stay. The marina needs more staff and has suffered from budget cuts. It's a large marina but has only one washing machine and two dryers. Also only one shower for men and one for women. Showers, laundry room, etc need a face lift. Great little town (Rogersville) to visit nearby with restaurants, hardware store, etc.

one of the best, 2013-09-29
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, FL (603)

We love Joe Wheeler. We especially like tying up in front of the lovely pool. The restaurant is not fancy but it is very good and inexpensive. Docks are in good shape. The pool is our favorite part of Joe Wheeler. They now have a liquor license; beer and wine.

Becoming a price gouger, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Oriental, NC (80)

I just found out that sometime in Sept, since the previous ireview, some non-boater bureaucrat decided to raise the previous price over 25% to get more revenue from AGLCA Rendezvous attendees and others traveling south for the winter. The price is the same for nearby marinas that have courtesy cars, or near by shopping, good cable and good WiFi . Yes, it's a nice looking facility, but to raise the price for transiet dockage by over 25% this late in the season is clearly a sign of price gouging... I hope ALCA finds another marina for next year.

The Hotel hosts transients, the Marina has the showers, 2013-07-25
Captain: , Pinnacle, NC, USA (1422)

There are 60+ empty but lovely slips associated with the hotel/restaurant complex all concrete floating with power & water. Oh, and a pool too. To shower, refuel, pump-out; plan to visit the marina a 1/4 mile distant. A curious division of services probably suggested by a committee of non-boaters. Happy to have it, even with its quirks.

great docks!, 2012-10-20
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Docks are in great condition but some movement due to fishing boats all night. Pool is clean and big and convenient to docks. No staff assistance at docks (summer help is ill informed about boating and works the lodge desk). Food is typical of rual regions of AL; lacking veggies and mostly fried.

Lonely location. We were the only transient boat on a two day weekend in July. Much moe interesting to stay @ Guntersville or Florence.

Great place !, 2012-09-24
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4188)

Would rate it 5 star if there were some shopping or grocery nearby but there isnt....BUT, the staff here were willing to take me into town to let me buy some engine oil and at the same time pick up milk and bread from the Food Land grocery store. The staff here is very accommodating. At dinner in the lodge which was OK. Lots of fried food and the cook uses a lot of spices. Would suggest ordering a steak if you dont like fried food or spices, which is what we will do when we stop back. And we will be back. Very nice docks, lots of cleats, stone decking is nice to walk on. Laundry is all the way over in the marina building. The transient dock is the first dock you see and in front of the condos. We were able to borrow a cart from the desk in the lodge to take our laundry over to the marina. Laundry is $1 per wash and free dryer, industrial size. Wife did 3 loads for $3. Cant beat it with a stick. Looking forward to our return here on our way back from Chattanooga.

wheeler stay, 2012-09-23
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (654)

We stayed at Wheeler State Park for four nights; we didn%u2019t really see the draw here. The facilities are clean, the staff we have met are friendly, yet all the things one would expect. Upon our arrival we couldn%u2019t raise them on Channel 16 after several attempts we went to cell phone. The only direction we got was to take a slip in front of the lodge. We finally figured we would have to register at the lodge. Beyond taking our money not much information was offered. We did go to the %u201Cprime rib%u201D dinner don%u2019t bother it%u2019s neither appetizing nor prime rib. We asked for a REFUND and settled with being charged a child%u2019s buffet; this was fair since we did eat some vegetables while they grilled our prime rib. Our suggestions stay one night and move on.

Great Loop Fall Rendezvous site. Staff was most accommodating. Beautiful park to explore

Great deep water marina, 2011-10-27
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Stayed a week on park courtesy dock. Transient docks in great shape. Four mile bike ride into town for shopping, restaurants. Very helpful marina and lodge staff. Lodge has restaurant with fair menu, prime rib great value. Free pump out (tip the dock hand) Wi-Fi was poor this week due to high demand (Loopers Rendezvous) Only negative was the single stall shower/restroom, but water was hot with plenty of pressure.

Good Marina, Fair Lodge Food, 2011-06-11
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (539)

Very good docks, 5 star, close to the lodge, and only $0.75 per foot. No courtesy car. Scenic. Lodge is showing its age and is in need of clean-up and fix up. Food in lodge was average. Don't look at the carpet. Free wifi worked good at dock, but I have booster antenna. Easy stop just off the main river just above the Wheeler lock.

Great marina & prices (except fuel), 2011-05-30
Captain: , Kemah, Texas (245)

A very nice state park facility. Very friendly and helpful staff in the lodge restauant, marina store, and fuel dock. The only problem we had was the price of fuel as $4.50: gas or diesel is the same.

Neads Help, 2010-10-21
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

Marina has a racoon problem (living under dock) and does not seem to want to do anything to get rid of them. Racoons are on boats. Marina is clean and would be nice if animals did not take over dock at dusk. They could also use a courtesy car since they are 10-20 miles from shoppings.

Great place to escape, 2010-09-22

Pool, walking trails, great dockage, dog friendly, nice dinning
However, NO wifFi except in lobby, then not that great

Nice marina, 2007-01-28
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1306)

Managed by the State of Alabama this marina is alway very clean. The restaurant is good and the slips are mostly new with good power and cable. They will not take reservations but you can almost always get a slip. 50 ft max slips could be a problem for larger boats. Golf Course and swimming pool
