Reviews for Jennings Boat Yard
Authentic Chesapeake boatyard!, 2017-09-14
Captain: , Chocowinity NC (140)

Charming boat yard, so accomdating, very nice face dock coming in from a foggy/misty rough day on the Chesapeake. Beautiful view at night across the harbor, quaint town. Beautiful boats being built for commercial fishermen. Rustic setting, but the charm overcomes all! Would love to go back! (Early August 2017 visit)

Quiet and laid back boatyard, 2017-04-23
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay (50)

Just launched yesterday after doing bottom paint, cleaning and learning my new-to-me boat. Lots of power points and water faucets located throughout the yard. Charlie is all business, runs a smooth operation here and is extremely helpful. As others have said here, nothing located nearby in the way of shopping. Bathrooms are better than some boatyards I've experienced. No laundry facilities and no marine parts store. Restaurant next door at Fairport Marina (Lead Belly's) serves good food. Warning: the footbridge between the boatyard and the marina is submerged at high tide and its a long walk around back around. No fish smell from the Menhadden plant across the creek as they haven't started operations back up. Transient rates are $1/foot with good floating docks and $5 for 30 or 50-amp power. Good experience here and I will recommend this boatyard to anyone passing through this way.

A Nice Quiet place to work and recharge, 2016-11-12
Captain: , Racine, WI (178)

We stopped at Jenning's Boatyard after going almost constantly from Chicago. We ended up spending a week here resting and enjoying the peace and quiet. This is not a Marina, it is a boatyard. They have very nice floating wood docks, a 35 ton travel lift and can get almost anything you need parts wise within about a day. The owner, Larry, is a very knowledgable shipbuilder, and the Manager, Charley does the work that takes 5-6 guys at other yards that we've been to.

Don't expect any ammenities, but if you are looking for somewhere to get off the grid or do some work on your boat, this is an excellent place to do it. There are bathrooms and showers, but they are boatyard level facilities, not marina, so you can clean up, but don't set the expectations too high. No laundry facilities. They plan on building new bathroom and showers in the near future.

There are no stores close by, so shop before you come.

Great marina with upgrades happening continously, 2016-11-06
Captain: , Kilmarnock VA (55)

Larry Jennings & Charlie Biddlecomb are both very personable with a wealth of knowledge & experience. The floating docks are complete & perminant slips seem to be filling up.The yard itself is pretty vast so if you're hauled out in the back pring plenty of extension cords & water hoses & you'll be fine. Roy Headley's resturant is next door or a dingy ride across the creek to Reedville will get you to multiple resturants & a few shops. We're fortunate to live nearby & use this marina for our yearly maintence but if I were a transient, this would be our stopping point heaping North or South.

There is no better yard, 2016-10-19
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (686)

I pulled my boat here for 6 weeks while I was gone out of the country and had Charley paint the bottom and fix the rudder on my boat. Well he did a bang up job on a crucial piece of boat gear. Absolutely superb quality.
The thing is about this yard, is that it is the very best place to come to during autumn for a refit. His rates are extremely reasonable and better than anyone else by a country mile and at the same time it missed hurricane Matthew that was wrecking havoc on all the places south of here. The weather is great too for working on your boat if you choose to do so.

Nice "BOATYARD", 2016-06-27
Captain: , annapolis (453)

As the name states - Jennings Boatyard; so i rated is as a boatyard not a marina.

Charlie the boatyard mgr is excellent. I arrived on my 37' sailboat 30 minutes early. Regardless, Charlie met me with the travel lift running. I suggested strap placement and Charlie replied "i looked your boat up on the internet and i think the straps should be placed here." Great.

Arrival - new floating dock to stage for lift.
Lift dock almost new and as you would expect very sturdy.
Power spray nice.
used on and off to clean boot strips.
travel lift slings were CLEAN. After blocking i noticed
charlie did not drag the straps through the gravel and sand.
good quality, three leg stands.
he used three pair, two with chains and one on the bow.
i asked for water and elect. Charlie parked me in front
of both.
since they use a travel lift and no trailer is involved; there is plenty of room between the boats for ladders etc.
Trash - i used one of two dumpsters - they were emptied regurarly and did not smell.
Head - yes it is small and no AC but this is a BOATYARD. There was plenty of hot and cold water and the toilet work fine -
no overflowing.
Supplies - you can bring them as i did, you may buy from Charlie'sinventory or order and they will be delivered tue thru fir.

My opinion Jennings is a great little boatyard and when you have someone like Charlie running the yard it truuly rates a 5 - as a boatyard.

Repair facility, 2016-03-23
Captain: , Sanibel (195)

We were there 3-22-16. Do not confuse with Fairport Marina next door.
Jennings has new floating docks for a $1.00 per foot. They also had a do it yourself yard and Mrs. Jennings will answer the phone even after hours. I guess they have not done their once a year cleaning of the bathrooms so primitive. Having said that they were working and Mrs. Jennings was kind enough to let us use them when we were docked at Fairport which was really not open. There are NO stores, restaurants of any kind off season, we were told season starts mid April. Very little cell. service. This is a good area to anchor if you are waiting weather. Jennings looks like they can do haul and repair not set up for transients.

Nice Docks, 2015-11-04
Captain: , Erie, PA (587)

Floating docks are new in 2014 and at $1/ft why pay $1.50/ft at other places? Dinghy in to town other wise it is a 5 mile hike. Verizon service seemed spotty, there were times we had no service at all unless we hooked up our cell antenna and then got a fairly strong 4g signal. Maybe Verizon was experiencing problems. WiFi is available around their office building (very limited range).

Stayed again on 11/2/2015. Real weak 3G Verizon signal even with our powered antenna. We were there on a Monday (off season). The museum and all restaurants as well as the ice cream store are closed on Monday. Nearest store to purchase milk is about four miles away. Almost all the homes on the main street are seasonal B&B's.

Friendly but small, limited services, 2015-11-03
Captain: , Alameda (667)

Came here to try to inspect a possible prop problem. Called ahead to check if they were able to haul us. Said yes, but would depend on the tide. We were anchored very close to here at Sandy Hook, so decided to come up. Charlie had the travelift near his haul out waiting. We talked for a while, but determined that we wouldn't be able to get in the haul out slip until late in the afternoon. We are 6' with a 6' rudder. He hopes to have this dredged from shore soon, but it is a small excavation job and he has not found a contractor to take it yet. We chatted, he recommended a few other places including nearby Tiffany's, where we could get to before noon.

Nice docks, did not notice power or water but didn't really look. Friendly, and tried to help diagnose issues and recommend solutions to help us. We could easily dock with 6', but not haul.

A Good deal, 2014-11-28
Captain: , Port Dover, Ontario (90)

Stayed here over a month ago, brand new floating docks were very nice, and the price of $1 a foot was nice. Only wifi near their building, which we didn't even try. The small washroom was not very nice and we opted not to use it. Nothing within walking distance, but short dingy ride gets you to town which has restaurants but not much else, besidgs a nice fishermans museum which is worth the time to check out

STILL $20 a day!!! with electric and water in 2012!!!, 2014-11-21
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

Why would you go anywhre esle in the area? $20, w electric and water, no kidding@!

Stayed here 3 days waiting on weather. Once you take the dink to the one street town , and see the museum, you have done it all.
Good wating spot.

great DYI place to store your boat, 2014-10-13
Captain: , fairport VA (74)

I have been here for years. great people. I like to do my own work and they dont mind if you do. But these guys can build you a boat from the keel up with no problems. If they cant do it they can get it done. lots of services close by. This is a boat yard that services the the local watermen not a yacht club

Great stop, 2013-03-12
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (253)

easy in, easy out. Restaurant there is great, last time I was there (12/11) had an AWESOME Chicken Pot Pie that completely renewed me and set me up for a long day the following morning. Great local info readily available. Good dockage, diesel. I'll be stopping again going south next week (3/13).

Great place to store/maintain your boat!, 2012-06-09
Captain: , Powhatan, Va (40)

I have been using Jennings Boatyard for 3 years. Larry and Charlie are excellent to work with. They will do any type of maintenance (they even build boats from scratch). Prices are very reasonable. Boatyard is not fancy, but is safe and frequented by captains "in the know" from all over the world. Food next door. You can work on your own boat, as long as you protect neighbor boats from debris, etc. I'll be wintering there again after this season!!

Outstanding Service, 2011-10-29
Captain: , Southport, ME, USA (1178)

Doesn't look like much, but don't be put off. These folks are great, very knowlegable & helpful. Had emergency work done same day at a very reasonable cost.

Great place for work. Jim n I. Reedville, VA, 2011-08-27
Captain: , Reedville, VA (689)

Larry and Charlie can do it all. What ever you need.

Jennings Boatyard Marina, 2011-04-19
Captain: , East coast (57)

Very cheap rates and DIY yard. Charlie, the owner, is super laid back and very helpful.

Boat Yard, 2008-06-24
Captain: , Ophelia, VA (44)

Long time boat yard. If you need repairs Larry Jennings is great. He also builds wonderful bay boats. Deep water docks. Nothing to do if you stay.
