Brought in my new-to-me 36' IPY PacketCraft Downeaster for significant work 10/2015 after delivery and shake-down. This is a professionally run, high quality marina facility. They will be competitive, but not always the lowest price. You WILL get the best service in Jacksonville, by competent craftsmen. Book ahead, they are busy.

Previous Review 12/15/2011 - My boat spent the summer in the Ortega river, known for bad algae growth. During this time my bottom was subject to aggressive scraping and scrubbing, and some of the paint was removed at the waterline. Paul at Huckins understood this problem and stood by his work, with a quick haul and touch-up in the few problem areas. He worked with me and I would definately use them again.

Huckins boat yard recently (2/25/11) did a bottom job on my 34' Trawler. They were highly responsive, prompt, and did an excellent job. I also had them wash and wax my hull, it is now gleaming like I haven't seen in years! Unlike some yards, they did not try to bait-switch or oversell sell me on unnecessary work. I was made to feel welcome even though my boat is not a mega-yacht nor was it made by Huckins. As a result, I will be a happy returning customer. I dealt with Deb Grant and Paul Rogers, both were very friendly and knowledgeable. They get 5 stars from me!

Huckins has a great staff that knows their job. They are honest and know what they are doing. They do great work and if for some reason, something isn%u2019t right, they will quickly make it right. They stand behind their work. Great place to have work done.

They did everything they said they'd do at the price quoted. We couldn't have been happier.

No job too small, 2015-11-19
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1081)

We were at Jacksonville Landing Nov 17, 2015 and needed to change our impellers on our twin CAT Krogen Express. Starboard went fine, port impeller casting broke while on the pump shaft and I could not remove it, nor make my way to Huckins on one engine in the very swift St. Johns River pinning us onto the dock. Called P.J., he sent the cavalry (Richard) and all was well within an hour. Thanks again to the Huckins folks. We're grateful for your quick help.

We were in Jacksonville Landing a while back, noticed water in the lazarette, determined it came from a leaky rudder post, called Huckins and they said come on over and they would fix it. We pulled in, they tightened it up, and we were out in 30 minutes. Smallest bill ever from a boatyard and we were on our way before we knew it. No job too small and we much appreciated the quick fix.

Great service, quality work, 2015-11-07
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

We were only in for a bottom job and detailing, left the boat for a week while we went home. Excellant work on the bottom paint and the detailer Huckins used also did a great job. Huckins did not charge for leaving the boat in the water a couple of days before work started and for the night after work was finished. Office staff, PJ, and the rest of his crew were all 1st rate.

The Best Yard In Jacksonville, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Jacksonville, Fl (32)

Huckins Yacht Corp has an incredibly skilled staff of craftsmen and boat experts in the specialties of carpentry, mechanical, fiberglass, hydraulics, paint and more. Our 60' motor vessel had its last bottom paint by Huckins in 2010...2 coats of bottom paint, 3 coats on the chines. Their expert process lasted 5 years and this month it was time for the same process. Craig and Joe took great pains to ensure every inch of the bottom and running gear were properly prepared and coated. While hauled, Richard installed an additional thru-hull and overhauled all other thru-hulls, some requiring new fastening hardware. Craig managed the hydraulic swim platform mechanism sandblasting, overhaul, expoxy primer and final bottom paint. Engine room paint touch up was accomplished by a paint staff that is second to none. Huckins at various times has fabricated and installed custom carpentry, plexi, hardware and more for this boat. The quoted costs for all work are met and under PJ's management of the yard, no question or point of detail is too insignificant. The best asset of Huckins is their talented, experienced and concerned technicians who can make miracles happen on a boat, no matter how big or small the issue. Boat ownership is no walk in the park, but with a yard like Huckins behind you, it almost becomes fun to go up on the hard. Thanks, Huckins, for caring about our boats. You operate a 5-star facility.

Great job, great yard and great people., 2015-02-01

IOLANI was at Huckins for the better part of a month where a number of different items were accomplished. Among the tasks performed were a bottom painting, rebedding running gear, repacking rudder stuffing boxes, repairing the auto-pilot, replacing the bonding sysem and installing a Raritan Electra-Scan Type I MSD. Working with Deb, P.J., Richard, Paul and the rest of the crew was a pleasant, hassle free experience. I met most of the crew who actually did the work. To a person they were experienced, professional and know what they were doing. Not once did I feel as though any job, including changing a light bulb in a fixture I couldn't reach, was too small. I was kept informed of progress throughout the effort and got IOLANI back on the date promised. I chose Huckins to do this work primarily from their outstanding reputation as a boat builder. I am happy to report that the reputation is justified. I would place IOLANI in Huckins' care any time I have need of a yard and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Huckins to anyone.

I can not say enough about the fine folks at Huckins, 2015-01-23
Captain: , Jekyll Island Ga (482)

We were at Huckins for a bottom paint job on advice of friends. Always thought of them as too rich for our poor old boat. Were we surprised! The whole crew treated us with courtesy and as professionals. The work was done on time and in our budget. I will stop people in the street to tell them how pleased I am with the service and work done by Huckins.

You'll fine no better Boat yard, 2014-12-29
Captain: , Destin Florida (410)

Of all the yards we have visted for work of one type or another, Huckins is simply the best! Be aware though this is a working boat yard and lacks some of the expected ammentiies. The workmanship
is superb and as are the people. PJ, Deb, Justin, Craig ... simply the best. You won't be disappointed. Any best of all very reasonably priced.

Great Place for Repairs and Bottom paint, 2014-02-20
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

We had our Express Cruiser here hauled out for new Bottom Paint. You will not only find nice staff here - the work is exceptional good. Once you get a quote %u2013 they will honor it and stick to the time frame. We stayed another week on board after the work was done. We will defiantly come back here if other work needs to be performed.

Call them with at least 24 hr notice and they will arrange to have diesel delivered to thier dock. Price was more than 30 cents cheaper than any other place in the area. Very friendly and accommodating service. You do not need to be staying at the facility.

The Quality of Work Done at Huckins Deserves 6 Stars!, 2012-07-26
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (30)

We just completed a total galley re-fit by Huckins and are astounded by the highest quality carpentry work that Jim and Bill did!!! We came to Huckins on the recommendation of our friends on DreamCatcher and have been truly impressed with our experience. The "guys" provided a very accurate estimate, started work when they said they would, completed the ENTIRE job in 14 days, and were very professional and friendly to deal with. Every time we asked if they could do this or that, they were already taking care of it. Mindreaders? Just really good and thoughtful craftsman! We never would have come here because we thought they only built high end motor yachts. We were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable price.

We give Huckins our highest recommendation and will be sure to spread the word to other cruisers we meet. Thank you Jim and Bill---we love our new galley!

A++++ Service, 2012-05-24
Captain: , Cleveland (2008)

We recently had our 36' trawler hauled for bottom work and had a wonderful experience with all of the folks at Huckins Yacht. Deb took the time to fully explain the cost and timeline. We were out of town - no problem - Hutckins picked our boat up on a Friday at Landings at Ortega, brought it to the marina and hauled/blocked it in order for the bottom to dry over the weekend before beginning work.

When we arrived back to Jacksonville, the bottom work began on Monday and was completed by Tuesday - as promised (actually earlier than promised!). Deb kindly called and left a message for us on Friday to confirm the boat was hauled (we were still out of town) which was greatly appreciated.

The final cost was as estimated and the bottom job (sanding in particular) was the best we have had done by anyone (just as good as when we did it ourselves :-))

We will definitely be back!

Huckins Yacht Corporation, 2012-04-23
Captain: , Jacksonville, Fl (10)

As the owner of Huckins Yacht Corporation I read every review written about my company. I take your complaints and compliments very seriously. They are a terrific tool for learning what we do well and were we can improve. Our goal is to provide every boater with the best experience possible.

So I was very concerned when I read Captian GaryNak's review detailing a paragraph of our standard contract which he found unreasonable. I and my staff reviewed the contract and agreed to strike the paragraph. In addition, we are reviewing the entire contract to determine if there are other places that require modification. I personally met with Captain GaryNak to offer him the modified contract. I did in the course of our conversation tell him that I expected he would modify his review if we came to an agreement and completed the work. I am sorry if Captain GaryNak interpreted that as a demand. That was never my intent.

I value all honest input I receive from boaters, both public and private, and do not wish to do anything to prevent that. I thank all boaters who take the time to let us know how we are doing.

This would be a 5 if it weren't for their service contract's FINE PRINT, 2012-04-13
Captain: , St. Ignace, Michigan (236)

Great people and good service at a fair price, BUT they apparently had a bad experience once so their standard service contract is so one-sided that it would have voided my boat insurance had I signed it!

Their contract: "Use of HUCKINS services and facilities is at the sole risk of OWNER. HUCKINS provides part-time security but shall not be liable for the care or protection of the boat (including gear, equipment and contents) or for any loss or damage of whatever kind or nature to the boat or contents, gear and equipment. OWNER assumes all responsibility for, and indemnifies and holds HUCKINS harmless against, any loss, cost, suit, or claim arising out of use of the HUCKINS facility, including dock space, shop facility, boat yard and paint facility, by OWNER'S boat or OWNER."

See this article:

UPDATE: You will note that there is no opinion above, simply a factual quote, a statement noting that my insurance agent saide Markel policy would be void, and a reference to an informative article on Markel website.

Well, now, Huckins won't finish the great work Eric started, even though we all agree it must be fixed as a safety issue--unless among other things I take down this post...poses an interesting ethical delimma, but these reviews seem sufficiently important that I have decided to leave it up and have it completed elsewhere. (They were willing to eliminate the paragraph quoted above, but that isn't the only problem with the document from the boat owners side, IMHO, and they wouldn't come back to the nearby marina where the initial work was done)

Competent and trustworthy yard., 2012-04-06
Captain: , Jacksonville, Florida (311)

We recently purchased a boat in Southern Florida and brought it back to Jacksonville, our home port. Prior to closing, based on a local boater recommendation, we talked with Huckins about costs associated with bottom work that needed to be completed. Paul, the service manager, offerred to pull the boat out of the water at no charge and provide me and estimate for bottom work. Immediately on return we brought it to Huckins. They pulled the boat and provided a reasonable estimate for bottom work. Paul and Deb in the service department were outstanding to work with. While the boat was out of the water, they were great about assisting us in doing some diy maintenance including buffing and waxing the hull. The final charges were in line with estimates, even though the work Huckins did turned out to be more than what I had originally expected. I was very pleased about the quality of the work done. Huckins will be first on my list for any future work done on our boat.

True craftsmen..., 2012-03-20
Captain: , Castine, ME (58387)

We toured the facilities at Huckins a few times while in the Ortega River area. They're craftsmen - you can tell. They have a large facility with many capabilities.

As part of our helm and flybridge refit we needed to have cabinetry and carpentry rebuilt and designed. Huckins was my first choice. A carpenter came to the marina and talked about what we wanted and made some measurements. I had asked for an estimate and was shocked when a written one appeared in my inbox that afternoon. Anyone who needs work done on their boat knows that this is unusual in a good way.

We brought the boat to their docks - really nice facilities with floating docks (great for our older dog). They completed the project on time and a bit under the original estimate. I'm extremely happy with the results and my decision to select Huckins. While at the yard I saw many other projects on all sized boat, especially larger ones (45'+). There was a lot of bottom painting going on and general refit and refinishing projects. As boat builders, these guys can handle anything. As craftsmen, it'll be done right. And because it's Jacksonville and pricing here is reasonable, it's all a good deal.

Now my wife is thinking about some other carpentry to have them do in the future...

The best yard in which to maintain your boat!

Top Notch Service!, 2011-11-29
Captain: , Boston (232)

We had our boat bottom painted and waxed at Huckins. The service was professional and we were very satisfied with the results. They even had the boat fueled for us in the slip. I would not hesitate to return for additional service.

Top Quality work ! If your picky this is the place., 2011-04-09
Captain: , Westport,Ma (700)

The best price for the best work! Price includes: haul out, power wash, blocking, sanding, painting, put in. The price even includes shaft-zincs.
And the price they quote is the price you pay, no surprises.
We dealt with Deb and Paul.

Also if you need canvas work Boatswain Locker just down the street does great work and they were 20% less than 6 other quotes we recieved.
We had a full upper helm enclosure done as well as a privacy screen around the sundeck. Paul was also great to work with and I highly recommend both Boatswain and Huckins.

Huckins Boat Yard, 2010-11-15
Captain: , On the water (1501)

I wanted to share with the Active Captain what a great experience I had with the Huckins Boat Yard up the Ortega River here in Jacksonville, FL! The staff & management were easy to work with, the price was guaranteed, and everybody went out of their way to help you when you needed something! After calling many boat yards between Jacksonville & Port Canaveral about getting our bottom painted we found that Huckins was between 30% & 45% less expensive than any other marina we called. For boats under 44' the flat price is $27 per foot, for boats 45 to 50 feet the price is $30 per foot. For that price you get:
To live aboard your boat while they do the bottom job at no additional charge, must have holding tank
Price includes: haul out, power wash, blocking, sanding, painting, put in. The price even includes shaft-zincs!
We were hauled on Tuesday morning and were ready to be back in the water on Friday
They have scaffolding & planks if you want to wax your boat while on the hard
Courtesy Car
Publix, West Marine, CVS, and Restaurants all within an easy walk
This is not a marine with all the bells & whistles, it's a working boat yard that does quality work. They have a great parts department. woodworking shop, paint & fiberglass team, and engine mechanics. I have no interest in the company but highly recommend them to fellow boaters! It was easily worth our time & money to cruise the extra 22 miles up the St John's River, and enjoy the free dock at the City Landing for a few days before getting hauled! Call Paul Rogers at Huckins @ 904-389-1125 for more info, tell him Life's2Short sent you!
