Reviews for Hop-O-Nose Marina
Good People,service and food., 2013-08-26
Captain: , Cleveland (100)

We have stepped our mast here twice (2007 and 2013). Sean and his crew are top notch and have stepped and unstepped 1000's of masts. I will admit that the equipment looks a bit scary but don't let that be a turn off-- they know what they are doing and carry out the job in a pleasant and skillful fashion.

The resturant is reported to be the best in town and is busy. As of 2013 Hop O Nose also runs the Marina on the North side of the creek. Verizon service is a bit weak in the creek. Buy fuel here- it is the best price on the creek.

Top notch facility for every reason, 2013-07-25
Captain: , Harrison Twp, MI (350)

We have everything GREAT to say about Hop-O-Nose for mast stepping or un-stepping, and a very comfortable place to stay. Good value for everything we needed. Excellent service, work, comfort, ambiance and FOOD! Locals stop regularly for the culinary delights. Restaurant has excellent high end dishes or reasonable lunch menu... the best hot wings I've found! The pool is large and warm. The crew built a mast cradle and un-stepped my mast on the hottest day of the summer with no complaints. Top notch workmanship! Sean is the greatest, working with your needs in a friendly and proffessional manner. I will always return here when passing through the Erie Canal.

Nice people, but a bit dated, 2013-06-11
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1670)

Sean the Dockmaster met us and was very helpful in getting our boat into a side tie. It is tight and difficult to get in and out. Most sailboats fit nicely on their finger piers. This is mainly a sailboat marina, as many S/V are getting their masts stepped. We wanted to be a bit further off the river and this marina is nice and quiet. No wakes from the river. With a rain overnight, there is a very strong current in the creek. Restaurant right on property. $2.00 a ft plus power, is a bit steep for the facility.

Fair service but not much to expect., 2013-01-25
Captain: , Montreal (80)

Stepped back our mast since I knew the place from a previous unstepping. The crane dates from prehistoric period but they manage to make it do the job each time. You certainly better know how you want it to be done because otherwise they will do it their way which in our case is not exactly the best. Be there and do not hesitate to help.

Nice folks - very helpful, 2012-10-12
Captain: , Rochester, NY (493)

Top marks for these folks. Great little restaurant, loaner car. We restepped our mast here - very impressed at the efficiency of it all and with their patience when I discovered - and had to fix - wiring discrepancies.

NB: Don't trust the red buoys on the east side of the Hudson when you leave going south. Recommend navigatiing that stretch mid-stream and high tide!

Mast stepped and extended stay, 2012-09-22
Captain: , Pelican Marina, Elizabeth City, NC (131)

Sean was patient and helpful stepping our mast, Later when we felt it was best to leave the boat for a couple of weeks for personal reasons he was very accommodating with a reasonable flat rate without holding us to an exact retuirn date. Still rebuilding from last years hurrricanes. Great little restaurant, convenient to town and shopping. He even had a "loaner" to take in order to provision. It's a good spot for flexible boaters.

Great stop, great service., 2012-08-29
Captain: , Delafield, WI (90)

We highly recommend this as the place to get your mast stepped. Sean is on top of his game. We were well taken care of. He had 10 boats come in in a very short time frame. All were cared for quickly and with good care. Beautiful location. Stayed an extra night just to party with all of the cruiser that were coming thru. Car available for store runs. Lots of dock space. Still rebuilding from Irene but up and running strong.

Great For Unstepping Mast, 2012-08-20
Captain: , Mimico Cruising Club ON Canada (1210)

Called ahead to make sure they were back in business after Hurricane Irene last year and Sean called me back quickly.

The old gin-pole is geared so low that lowering in my mast in was the smoothest job ever!

A hidden bonus is the Creekside Restaurant. Great food. Surprising thing is that Sean is a chef too. Try the crab cakes.

Extremely accommadating, 2012-08-19
Captain: , holland, mi (120)

Called ahead and Sean called back with directions. They did a very good job stepping the masts (Ketch rig).Timely and professional! We needed to go back home and Sean gave us a reasonable price to leave the boat. He also watched over her.
Loaner car for groceries, good on site restaurant, new docks....very accommadating.

Hop-o-"NO", 2012-07-01
Captain: , Marietta, GA (260)

We called ahead to make a reservation and ensure 50 amp power was available. The dockmaster assured us that it was. When we were a few hundred yards away, we called and asked about pump-out. They didn't have it, so we stopped at Riverview, and the dockmaster for hop-o-no said he would be "looking for us" following our pump-out. We arrived 30 minutes later to NO ONE looking for us and had to squeeze into a small slip. Dockmaster would not answer phone or radio for hours. No 50 amp was available. Eventually, an electrician installed a receptacle for us, still no dockmaster to be found. Loud music late into the night until around 2:00 a.m., which included patrons falling into the river....

All of the above as well as overpriced and an attempt to overcharge us ....all leads to a very poor experience.

Pleasantly Surprised, 2012-06-11
Captain: , santa barbara (388)

Just reopening after Irene - dockwork in progress, restaurant opened late May 2012. Difficult to reach by radio - was able to obtain cell number, dockmaster (Sean) was very busy but very accomodating. Great spot for mast work as no wake to worry about- equipment looks dated but staff was efficient - understand they have done about 35 this season. Many long term slipholders - very pleasant group.

Stepped Mast, 2011-09-14
Captain: , Victoria (60)

We had our mast, Hunter 45CC, shipped from Sodus Bay. We arrived 2 days before the mast and were made very welcome. Had the use of a vehicle to do some shopping. Good restaurant at the marina. Real friendly and helpful people. The staff gave us great advice to ride out TS Irene. Highly recommend.

storm update, 2011-09-11
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (836)

Ted,

I just got a call-back from Hop-O-Nose Marina, they are OK

Their docks are pretty much fixed now and they are open for business.

Someone previously said they'd stored their mast and dinghy there, those
are all OK too.

The Marina requests that someone with access to Active Captain please enter
that info there.

Extensively damaged by Irene, 2011-08-31
Captain: , Mallets Bay, VT (96)

Talked to some friends who pulled out Saturday before Irene arrived and they said Op-O-Nose Marina is all but gone. Heard one report that said they will not be stepping masts for the balance of the 2011 season.

Let us down badly, 2011-08-22
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (610)

August 19th
We made resevations two days before with them, but when we arrived about 2:00am, we could not raise them on VHF or the phone. There was no empty dock space to tie up to in order to find someone. I would give them a no star rating if there was one.
We were lucky that Catskill Marina have a big effort and made room for us.

Not a vacation destination ( by a long shot), 2011-07-09
Captain: , Kingston, ON (455)

To their credit, they did step our mast without damaging anything. They seem to have a good rep. But there were times that I was afraid to watch.
The place looks run down. The docks are sad. I've never seen a marina's electric wired the way this one was. Overall, it was OK to have the mast stepped. Bottom line, get in, get er done, get out.

Fast, efficient mast stepping, 2011-03-11
Captain: , Iroquois (1141)

These folk take a serious approach to mast-stepping. They have a crane which can reach two adjacent docks, so they can work on one boat while the other boat owner is getting ready. They give clear instructions and are really helpful.
Recommended.

Work Well Done, 2010-10-31
Captain: , Wilson, NY (432)

Excellent job stepping our mast. Friendly and helpful people. OK facilities. Gave us a break on prices late season.

Best Marina In Catskills..., 2010-10-17

.... for Transients.

Docks old, good mast stepping, good restaurant, 2010-06-17
Captain: , Newport, RI (8772)

The docks are old, but the owner is making improvements. The power looks like something from a 3rd world country. They do a good job of pulling masts and I guess of stepping them. They're helpful and friendly. The restaurant food is quite good and reasonably priced.

Hop-O-Nose Marina and Restaurant, 2007-07-01
Captain: , Shelburne, VT (297)

Run by "down-home" folks, these are perhaps the most experienced mast-steppers on the upper Hudson. A good bunch of fun people and an excellent restaurant (closed Mondays) on-site. A "must-stop" for us twice a year!
