Reviews for Highbourne Cay Marina
Mud Puddle Rose - Joe Chilberg, 2016-10-12
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL, USA (510)

Best marina in the Exumas. Came here last 5/28/16 and was not disappointed.I come here each year to get a rest from anchoring. The staff is fabulous and a good place to pick up basic provisions albeit expensive as in all the Exumas. The beach and restaurant are tops.

A Little Slice of Heaven, 2016-08-05
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (123)

We stayed here three nights. It is an awesome place.

We crossed from Abaco to Eleuthera on Fri July 29. We spent the night in the Current Cut north beach anchorage. Saturday morning the wind started picking up and the forecast for the next few days was dismal. I called Highborne to see if we could stay 3 nites, Sunday Monday Tuesday. They said they only had Sunday nite. I took it. After a weather nite from Hell at Allens Cay, we checked in Sunday. I asked for three nites and I got them.

The marina is very well kept, the docks are very good, the staff is very helpful if not speedy. The restaurant is excellent, and we ate there often. The chef is a wizard. My wife hated to leave. I highly recommend it. It is a little pricey, but worth every penny.

Love the ameneties, 2016-07-25
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (250)

Great stop over in the Exumas. Free use of bikes or a golf cart rental get you to Horseshoe Bay, where there are complimentary paddle boards, chairs, cabanas, floats, etc. Store was fully stocked, with prices typical of an out island (We paid $36.50 for a case of 20oz waters). Xuma restaurant was excellent, but don't be in a rush as it is service very much on island time.

Nice facilties, not the friendliest staff, 2016-06-25
Captain: , Ft Lauderdale (30)

Very nice beach. Good fixed docks and very good fuel dock. The store is one of the better ones in the Exumas. The staff just gives off the vibe they aren't very excited to have you there. No hello, thanks, what do you need.

Great stop, 2016-05-09
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (1135)

I had to increase my 4 star rating to a 5 star! The upgrades since we were last here are wonderful. Mulitple cabanas have been added with great lounge chairs, 2 fire pits and paddleboards and kayaks. The restaurant is fantastic and the staff great. This may be out new favorite stop in the Exumas!
The marina docks, power and water all great. A little pricy for electricity but we ran our airconditioners the whole time...
If you want to feel like you're the only people on earth, take a stroll to the beack on the Atlantic side...we walked for a couple of hours and never saw another person. The beach on the marina side is great for swimming. Love it here!

A Jewel in the Exumas, 2016-05-06
Captain: , Pompano Beach (20)

We enjoyed two separate stays at Highbourne Cay Marina in early June 2015 and found it to be the one of the best managed and enjoyable destinations in the Exumas. After our first two nights there our crew was unanimous that an unplanned visit on our return leg was non-negotiable %u2013 everyone wanted to go back! When you enter the marina, the large dark objects in the water to starboard are the neighborhood nurse sharks waiting for the late afternoon feeding from the communal fish cleaning station. This becomes a popular gathering place to see the gathering sharks feed and watch the setting sun. The marina offers a great beach with clean, clear water, as well as free bicycles for exploring nearby bays and other beaches (including one that offers a large gazebo with first-rate lounge chairs and an incredible crescent beach). The marina itself is well protected and nicely laid out with boats ranging from super yachts to small sailboats and fishing skiffs. The air-conditioned marina office is conveniently located, staffed with a pleasant, if harried, staff. Immediately next door to the office is a well-stocked general store with fresh and frozen food. The dockage is wood and in good condition; power, water, and garbage disposal are within feet of each slip. There%u2019s a talented handyman available should you need help with boat problems. However, he was always busy during our visits and we felt lucky to have him help us for a couple of hours sorting out a plumbing issue. The restaurant onsite is the icing on the cake: The marina%u2019s talented young chef prepares the best food we had anywhere in the Exumas %u2013 bar none. Whether it was a conch salad or a hamburger, the food was great and the presentation was the rival of the best restaurants at US resorts. Our hope is that he is still there in 2016 and hasn%u2019t been lured away. Meal and drink prices are high but what you come to expect for the Bahamas. We%u2019re headed back this June and look forward to another couple of stays at Highbourne Cay and hope nothing has changed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

First class marina in the Exumas, 2016-04-10
Captain: , Put-in-Bay,Ohio (194)

The restaurant was 4 stars and the island was great to see lots of improvements over the last few years. Gas and deisel and nice store for provisioning...

Very nice and pricey, 2016-03-02
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (374)

We enjoyed our two stays here. The first time we were near the fuel dock, and away from the surge that rocked other boats during the two days of 30kn+ winds. The second time we were on the new dock on the north side of the marina, which doesn't have electric, but is close to the showers. There are two showers (one men, one women), which are very nice. Good hot water and hooks for clothing. There's an old coin machine for the showers, but it wasn't in use when we were there.
The store is pretty well stocked, but very expensive. Local bread is available. Like all the islands, there is a better stock of produce just after the mailboat arrives.
The water quality was good and we were able to refill our drinking tanks.
We had lunch at the Xuma restaurant, which we enjoyed.

Very nice; very expensive, 2016-01-24
Captain: , Severna Park, MD (441)

We sat out a strong westerly here. It is very nicely protected. If you want a resort experience, this is the place. Beautiful beaches and 1st-rate facilities but the prices match! Wifi is $35/day and frequently does not work.

Expensive, but nice., 2015-07-20
Captain: , Lakeland (997)

We stayed here for a couple of nights back in March of this year. A lovely facility and very expensive. Power rates are crazy for 50-amp. And, they won't let you run your generator. The restaurant was first class. We walked over to the Atlantic beach which was beautiful. This is a really nice place to stay, but due to the price we could only stay a night or two. There was good cell service and adequate wifi.

Xuma Restaurant and Bar, 2015-07-04

Delicious $$$ food and friendly service. Be patient as it will take a while.

Highbourne Cay Marina, 2015-04-01
Captain: , Leamington, Ontario (620)

Dock hands just stand there upon arrival, not much use. Nice docks, easy to access marina. Great restaurant, albeit a tad pricey. Well stocked provisions store, friendly staff. Good showers, which you pay for. Very well protected harbour. Pricey dock rates, private facility, busy! Great beaches, free bicycle use. Good water depth in harbour.

great place, 2015-03-21
Captain: , Cozumel, Mx (310)

We spent one night here and liked it very much.
The staff is great and the price was fair. Lots of big boy yachts here but we still felt we were well treated. The restaurant was fantastic and a good price. Two of us ate there for 50$and the food was gourmet.awesome view too.

Will Return, 2015-03-19
Captain: , jacksonville beach (50)

Great marina to stay over for a few days. Nice docks, fuel on-site and a great restaurant. Miller and Thomas in the restaurant are worth the trip alone. Will return again and again.

Our Favorite Marina in the Exumas, 2015-02-09
Captain: , Lansdale, PA (330)

This is our third year stopping at Highborne and we feel it's the best marina in the Exumas. While other marinas may do some things better, Highborne is always making improvements so you feel that the prices you pay for services are worth staying at the marina. The north beach area is fantastic! Complimentary use of SUP's and kayaks. We love relaxing in the new gazebos. The food at Xuma is outstanding and the bar is the best spot for having a happy hour drink and watching the sunset. Shannie makes you feel welcome and is very detailed about your docking instructions. My only complaint is the dockhands. They are looking at their cellphones when you are trying to hand them a dock-line, or get their attention when you are ready to leave the fuel dock. A minor annoyance, but one that could easily be corrected.

We look forward to our next stay!

Lots to do while a front passes, 2015-01-28
Captain: , Havre de Grace, MD (241)

Many things are pricey here, but all very nice and well maintained. Dockage cost varies by your slip assignment. Here for three days by choice, even though the winds from a passing front made the decision easier. Friendly service, once they know you are in a slip, and not coming in from the nearby anchorage. You can feel better about $100/night slips when you hear the daily rates for the cottages can be ten times that! Equal number of large motor yachts and sailors in the slips.

my August 1st 2014 stay, 2014-08-11

Our Favorite Marina/Island, 2014-06-21
Captain: , Palm City FL (134)

This marks our 15th year visiting Highbourne - always great!!

Very First Rate!, 2014-06-11
Captain: , St James City (80)

Everything has already been stated about this marina and I agree that it is extremely well managed and maintained. We stayed there twice on our visit to the Exumas and enjoyed the wonnderful beach and grilled steaks on their grill( bring your own charcoal..$19.00 a bag!) . The dolphin were running and we caught our share!
Very relaxing!

GREAT marina!, 2014-06-03
Captain: , Orlando (224)

From our experience, this is the most professionally run marina in the northern Exumas. The following all get 5 stars: electrical connection, wifi, docks, office staff, marina grocery and convenience store and restaurant. If you need to conduct a little business this is the place to be. The wifi is $15/day but it%u2019s a solid, reasonably quick connection. The only amenity that is missing is a pool but they make up for it by having a great swimming beach with Adirondack chairs under a thatched roof. The grocery seems to have all the things that boaters need without having to go to Nassau. The restaurant is very good but I would suggest that for dinner that you get your name in %u201CThe Book%u201D early as they fill up quickly (closed Mondays).

great marina and restaurant, 2014-05-07
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

Marina and restaurant are best in Exuma's. Prices are reasonable. Power is flat rate $25 for 30 amp and $53 for 50 amp. Water is RO and .50/gal and good. Fuel is cheaper that Staniel at $5.61 for diesel.
Make dinner reservations before 4 pm. Restaurant closed Mondays. Ships store is very good for Exuma's. Prices are typical for Exuma's, good selection.
The Sound side beach is 2+ miles long and hard! good for walking! our opinion the most beautiful beach in Exuma's.Very clean, chairs and shaded huts sit in 3 places. Directions and signs to beach from Marina. Bikes available at Marina. Several good snorkeling sight around. The best are off the beach. Mahi mahi fishing offshore has been very good trolling ballyhoo or plastics at 7 to 8 kts.
Marina well protected from surge, fixed docks in good repair.
We has several issue with power, voltage was 132v and had neutral ground issues .
Staff well trained and have great attitudes. The restaurant chef is fabulous!

theRestaurant at Highbourne Cay Marina, 2014-04-06
Captain: , Stuart, FL (20)

By far the BEST food I have had in the Bahamas!! Cudos to the chef for presentation, flavor, freshness!!
We had the calamari, ceviche, conch chowder, chicken wings and a beet salad that were sensational!!

cruiser unfriendly, 2014-03-06
Captain: , St Louis Missouri (276)

We pulled in to refuel, water and shop a little. We planned lunch at the restaurant before we moved on. We needed an internet connection to check emails and get weather and the emphatic answer was no. Only if we rented a dock. We were here last year and had free internet at the restaurant. I offered to pay, they again said no. This comment is to update the previous one from January since they have clearly changed their policy. The marina had a few mega yachts and no cruisers on March 3. I sincerely wish that I would have spent my $250 in Spanish Wells where they would have appreciated it and they have free wifi everywhere!
At least this experience will be viewed by my fellow cruisers who hopefully will have enough fuel and water to bypass this place.

Great first stop in the Exumas, 2014-01-17
Captain: , Houma, LA (387)

Yes it is pricey, but this place is the best we have seen in the Bahamas so far. The island is beautiful, and well maintained. The beaches are gorgeous and the snorkeling great. Power is reliable ($50) a night for a 48' boat with one 50 amp cord. Water is .50 cents a gallon, and good quality. The staff is very helpful. We had a raw water pump problem that was fixed by the manager's husband, who happens to be Yanmar certified. Wi-Fi is $35 for a week and it works. The only negative is you can only use it for one device. The docks are fixed wooden, and in good shape. 5 stars for what and where it is.

Lovely spot, 2013-12-31
Captain: , Tracys Landing, Maryland (350)

Beaches and island are gorgeous. The nurse sharks and rays play in the crystal clear water under your hull. As the only game in town, the staff can be both amazingly nice and a bit inflexible. We stayed for Christmas, and overall had a wonderful time

Got the right stuff but attitude needs adjusting, 2013-12-24
Captain: , Fort Myers, FL (1039)

Fuel, protection, pretty beach, best restaurant on a cay we have found, shop with good fresh and preserved supplies and local art/gifts, and the whole place feels like they don't want you there. An example - we dinghied in from the anchorage and asked at the office about wifi and were asked if we were going to the restaurant. We said yes, to the bar, she said fine but she could only sell us an hour for $5. Oh but we were supposed to buy at least an entree and use the wifi *in* the restaurant: there was no wifi signal in the restaurant! So we had to split up, one person using the wifi at a picnic table near the docks getting glares from the office staffer while the others relaxed over Kaliks and a snack. Then when we went to walk around a bit, the same office person scolded us with a cranky tone that this was *private* island and we couldn't leave the dock area. We left the dock area, got in our dinghy and won't go back unless under duress for fuel.

ouch, $52 for electric, 2013-12-09
Captain: , cruising (591)

Great marina and staff. Nice sand beach by marina and walking the beach on the east side of the island using free bikes was fun. $52 for 50 amp electric for a 40' boat is the most we have ever paid. Unlimited Wifi (with good signal) for 24 hours is available for $15.

Beautiful Island, 2013-12-02
Captain: , Houston (90)

Lovely marina - Beautiful island

Best Port in a Storm, 2013-08-16
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (41)

Including those storms coming out of Nassau, this is great WX marina, as well as having top notch facilities, despite is diminutive size. Finding good ancorage is a snap.

Excellent first stop in the Exumas, 2013-07-01
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (231)

We stayed 6/9/2013 for a couple of nights. We enjoyed our stay, and the marina is pretty well maintained by island standards. The restaurant is first-rate, although in the evenings under the right conditions bugs can be a nuisance. We understand that management is planning on enclosing the dining room. That'd be nice. We like this place and will return. If you go, make sure to spot the range markers as you enter. Life is good if you follow the ranges.

Good Marina and Good Xuma Restaurant, 2013-05-31
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (539)

Stayed two nights. Found this to be very well maintained marina and grounds. Dined at Xuma Restaurant two nights - open air, overlooking the water. Very good food. Service by Berlin was professional. Memorable experience.

Marina has breakwater with fairly good protection. Not as good as Sampson Cay,which has superb protection. But grounds and restaurant at Highborne are five star.

I agree that $63 oer night for single 50 amp cord to a 52 foot boat is excessive. I understand they must generate power, but this is higher than the competition.

The store is quite well stocked, clean, busy.

Simply the best in the Exumas!, 2013-05-22
Captain: , Sunny Isles Beach (99)

We arrived in March intending to stay a few nights, and ended up staying here two months! Yes it is pricey, but it is the best run and best maintained marina we have found in many years of cruising the Bahamas. There is a stunning beach on each side of the island, so wind will never confine you to your boat. There are also many more beautiful beaches within an easy dinghy ride both north and south of this marina, with reefs and conch galore. This year the mega-yachts were moving in and out of the marina daily like musical boats, but Shannie kept everyone sorted out as she assigned slips. This is a great first and/or last stop on your way into and out of the Exumas, but make a reservation, and call to confirm it or you'll be on the hook outside looking in and wishing you were there!

An attractive marina in a good location, but..., 2013-04-03
Captain: , Hartfield (281)

The marina is the most perfectly protected we found in the Exumas and we had a calm but expensive night. We did not take electric as it was way overpriced and the marina forbids the use of onboard generators. We think that the smaller boats probably subsidize the megayachts that are there in abundance.

The food at the Xuma restaurant, which we ate at for a Sunday treat was fair, but the service was very disorganized since there seemed to be only one waiter for all the tables, which were full.

We had decided to make our trip back to the US from the DR easy by staying at marinas, and this was easy, but very pricey. Nice people.

Marina and restuarant, 2013-02-28
Captain: , White Stone (20)

For $2.40 a foot plus $25 for 30 amp electric, this facility is well worth it. We would have missed this experience but threatenig weather brought us off the hook and into tranquility. Beautiful marina, with use of bicyles, sharks galore at the fish cleaning station, breath taking beaches and views and incredible food (ceviche, lobster and seafood risotto) prepared by Chef Devon and served by Berlin at the restaurant called Xuma overlooking the harbor.

Excellent But VERY Pricey, 2013-02-20
Captain: , Solomons, MD (882)

The facilities are excellent, the staff very service-oriented, the marina store is surprisingly well-stocked and we loved the restaurant. Nevertheless, the place is VERY pricey. I understand better than most the problems associated with producing water, producing and distributing electricity and maintaining the grounds in the our islands. Still, the prices are very high. For each night's 50-amp connection we paid $62 and for each gallon of water we used, we paid 50 cents.

Morever, while I agree this is an excellent facility there just isn't that much to do on Highbourne Cay.

If this were on Paradise Island or in Nassau, it might be worth the price they ask. But since it is on Highbourne Cay, it is just too pricey for me to give it 5 stars.

Beautiful Resort Marina, 2013-01-06
Captain: , Wheaton, IL (70)

This was our first marina stop after leaving Nassau in Jan. 2013. Highborne Cay Marina is top notch. The docks are new and well constructed. Very easy to get into and out of with a less-than-nimble sailboat. The wood work and tile around the facility are beautiful. The staff, friendly and helpful.

This is a relatively expensive marina but they should charge a premium for the great facility they run. We felt we got our money's worth.

The ONLY reason we only rated this faclity with four stars is because our 10 year old got food poisoning from the Xuma restuarant after eating shrimp cocktail, chicken tenders and fries. None of the rest of us got sick but he was in bad shape all night. So, we restricted ourselves to drinks at the bar for the rest of our stay.

Happy Harbour, 2013-01-01
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (970)

This must be one of the best marina/resorts found anywhere in tropical waters. Many comfortable slips and face docks are beautifully maintained, and the understated resort property is immaculately clean and organized. All the amps and water one can wish for are available particularly for cruising motor yachts.

Friendly and extremely helpful staff make one's booking, landing, and stay a complete pleasure. The many Bahamian boaters from New Providence we met and visited with during a couple of days over New Years were welcoming and friendly and made our stay a joy!

Xumas restaurant a short walk from the marina has an excellent chef and most attentive service that kept us returning for unplanned meals ashore. Fresh fish delivered daily is available as well as creative specialities.

Lovely beaches, good snorkeling, and an excellent general store with provisions, boating necessities, and crafts make Highbourn Cay an excellent stop.

Pay attention to the tidal surge on entering the harbour, but the marina itself is completely protected and secure.

Highbourne Cay, 2012-12-06
Captain: , Miami (30)

we did stay with 2 boats several days, we did like Highbourne Cay very much, very good service, restaurant, grocery-store

My Favorite, 2012-06-14
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

Of all the places we stayed on our trip up from St. Thomas, USVI, this was my favorite. While the wifi was weak and limited, I was happy to be able to check my e-mails and move on to other things. We only stayed one night, but would have loved to have stayed longer. From the beautiful grounds, to the friendly staff to the charming marina, it is a winner. Could not more highly recommend this facility.

The curry conch chowder at "Xuma" restaurant is awesome! Our favorite conch chowder of the trip.

Now the Best Marina in the Exumas, 2012-03-21
Captain: , Grove Harbour Marina, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL (10)

Just spent 2 nights at Highborne Marina. Installations are pretty much now complete, seriously top notch with the wow factor and tastefully done. The new restaurant is not to be missed and is excellent in every respect offering great value for money and earning 2 thumbs up from my Parisian wife, rare ! Staff are very helpful, friendly. Full catering options and fresh bread also available to your boat in the evenings through Cool Runner on Ch 16. Store is amazingly good too. All prices in the resort are very reasonable for the Exumas. Returning soon for an extended stay. Velocity.

They had ice cream!, 2012-03-11

Top notch all the way.

Bella Vita/Ray and Cythia Pagano, 2012-02-22
Captain: , Charleston (241)

A beautiful spot in the world. Everyone is very friendly. We eat at the new restaurant and it was nothing but great - and the view is fantastic. Marco, one of the waiters, brought some fresh lobster and fish to our boat the next night for grilling (all cleaned and prepard for the grill.) The ships stor is fairly well stocked and bikes are available at no charge. Walking the beach and biking the island is how we spent our time on the island. The sunsets are suited for anyones photo book.

Highbourne Cay Marina, 2012-02-02
Captain: , Annapolis (30)

I highly recommend this marina as the first port of call in the northern Exumas coming SE from Nassau. The staff were very accomodating. The scenery is gorgeous. Their beach faces the west to view the sunset in a beach chair. Numerous picnic areas and charcoal grills surround the dock for those wishing to grill their dinner. However, they recently hired a chef named Celeste for their resaurant. Restaurant and bar are on top of a hill overlooking the Bank. Celeste cooked for us one of the best dinners we have had since reaching the Bahamas. I had a delicious Mahi dinner.

One note regarding electric cost. 50 amp service costs $53 per night. As the staff advised, they run their own diesel generator to power the marina, and diesel fuel costs $5/gallon. In my opinion small price to pay for a delightful stopover while heading south. Much better than spending the night on the hook at Allen Cay.

Highborne cay, 2011-11-28
Captain: , Carolina Beach, NC (185)

Good marina with a friendly staff. It is growing fast with ongoing construction on the island. It has one of the best ships stores in the northern Exhumas so if you forgot something in Nassau, they might have it! Great beach and paved roads for a little exercise.

Highly recommend, 2011-11-14
Captain: , Silver Bay, MN (52)

Very well maintained marina, friendly staff, well stocked store, wifi $10 per day, beautiful beach. We are currently one of only 3 boats here, which is fine with us. Looks like the restaurant/bar, once opened, will be very nice with a spectacular view.

Nice Place, 2011-06-01

We're going back next year!!, 2011-05-29
Captain: , Orlando (60)

We first went to Highbourn 3 years ago and always said it was our fav spot in the Exumas. If fact we liked it so much 3 years ago that after stopping on the way down to Georgetown, we stopped for for a week coming back. This year we stayed for two weeks.
Its well protected and the staff is great. Barbara, the manager has been there for 13 years and does a great job.
It does'nt fit for what my wife and I normally like. We like a lot of activity. This place has vary little. No Bars, no restaurants , no pool. I has a great little store and everyone meets on a covered dock every afternoon at 5:30 for cocktails. When we were there, most everyone brought a covered dish and their own meat for the BBQ. We plan on staying a Month there next season.

Highbourne Cay Marina is a very well thought-out and very well maintained small facility. The fixed wooden docks are in good condition. Protection from the west is quite good. Power is stable. Staff is very friendly. The store is well-stocked and immaculate.

And the surrounding beaches are picture-perfect. Highly recommended.

This is one of the few marinas in the Exumas that has real service and supplies of real food. The folks are VERY nice and the slips are excellent. Power is clean and reliable. Wifi is questionable but available. We only stayed one night but would have liked to stay longer.

Good store by the standards of the Exumas - fresh and frozen foods, some marine supplies but limited selection. Good docks, well protected, reliable electric service. Beach and picnic area, fish cleaning station.
