Reviews for Hewett Marine LLC
Awesome yard crew!, 2016-10-06
Captain: , North Carolina (10)

Hauled out today for hurricane Matthew. Yard crew were attentive, professional, and detail oriented. Very well done. Some current at docks if between tide peaks - time your arrival accordingly. Equipment, grounds, and blocking materials were very good.

Misleading establishment, EXTREMELY Shallow Water, 2015-07-22
Captain: , Southport (20)

The depth at high tide was 5ft, low tide you can see mud exposed on the other side of the dock. You can only get in or out at high tide and around a slack tide, the marina is directly on the ICW with strong currents which make it difficult to maneuver. None of the traffic slows down going by the marina causing boats to rock violently since the %u201CNo Wake%u201D sign is the size of a piece of paper and no one sees it. There is a fishing trawler permanently docked there with outriggers; the chains and stabilizers clang all night long as boats go by.
Their website advertises them as a full service boatyard with repair and year round service. Eddie did good work for me however he is an independent contractor and isn%u2019t governed or insured by the marina. If Eddie damages your boat, the marina will claim no fault as he is an independent contractor and he only accepts cash. Like I said I had no problems with him, his prices or the work he did. There is no support on site, both managers show up once a week for a few hours to do paperwork and are gone again. The restroom facilities there are disgusting to the point that someone wrote on the mirror, %u201CYour mom isn%u2019t here to clean up after you so clean up after yourself%u201D if that tells you anything. There is only one bathroom and many live aboards at the Marina, bring your own toilet paper, hand soap and all toiletries as this place is truly a %u201Cdo it yourself%u201D establishment. There is now a car/truck repair shop working out of the marina parking lot and storage building taking up much needed parking spaces. There are no parts stores around, everything must be shipped in or a minimum of a 30 minute drive to Southport for simple supplies.
If your only expectations are a travel lift to pull your boat, average pricing and a place to do your own work, this might be the place for you. For the same price just down the road in Southport you can have a truly full service yard with deep drafts, parts nearby and peace of mind with security. If you end up at Hewitt%u2019s Marina I recommend locking your boat and everything that isn%u2019t permanently attached. Eddie told me if the fishing boats next door haven%u2019t gone out in a while, the fishers run out of beer money and things have been known to go missing. Good Luck

Might be Good as a Boatyard, 2014-12-05
Captain: , Portland, OR (30)

They might be good as a boatyard, but we were looking for a transient slip. I called ahead and they said that our 4 ft draft wouldn't be a problem and they 'thought' they had 50 amp power.

We arrive at sunset to find the 'slip' only had 1 ft of water depth. We didn't have any options since we didn't want to be navigating after dark, or finding a place to anchor in the dark. We ended up tying off across the ends of the slips. Too far from shore power (which was 30A). It was a cold night (32 degrees) without heat.

I'm just glad we didn't arrive at high tide and assume what the owner said was true. Could have damaged our boat and lost a lot of time.

To top it off, they still charged us $1/foot.

Great Work, 2014-03-25
Captain: , Sunset Beach, NC (1122)

This was my second time here. Haulout and storage for reasonable rates. Eddie Pottorff did all the repairs and bottom paint. Replaced exhaust elbow, repacked packing glands, some other odd repairs all done correctly for a reasonable price. Eddie is nice to deal with and knows his stuff. He was very thorough in explaining his work. I supplied my own replacement parts and paint.

My advice: you might save a few bucks by providing your own paint and supplies.

Do it yourself work is allowed and many there doing just that.

No real security, so lock your stuff up.

Eddie did a great job on my bottom paint this year. They do allow do it yourself work which is getting more rare every year.

Nothing fancy, 2012-11-18
Captain: , Galesville, MD (246)

This is a small boatyard that allows do-it-yourself work. As a transient stop, it offers no amenities other than space and electricity on floating dock and finger piers.

Best place to get a new prop ! (within 50 miles), 2012-06-17
Captain: , Newport, RI (204)

While traversing South of here a nasty rock deformed my propeller and maybe my shaft. The crew at Hewitt Marine was able to lift my 42 foot sailboat without difficulty. In less than 24 hrs a new prop and my checked (but true) shaft were reinstalled. I also opted for a new cutless bearing. While I was lifted out I checked the operation of the center board only to find the pivot pin was missing! One phone call and two hours later and that too was fixed !! They have one of the biggest lifts in the area and a very capable crew. I recommend Hewitt Marine they had me back together again in no time !!

Good place to stop if you need a boat yard or some maintence

Hewett Marine, 2010-02-23
Captain: , Holden Beach, NC (95)

This is primarily a boat Yard, with a 50 ton traveling lift and storage on the yard. Major repairs and minor repairs, bottom paint, etc. are available. Frequently, there are 2 to 3 slips available to transients. A very good calabash style seafood restaurant is next door. New floating docks with 30 and 50 amp power.
