Pump out

Yes - Abel operates a pump out boat.

Yes - Season 2017 - restaurant is closed as of 8/8/17 but were told it will reopen for May 2018.
Abel's Lobster Pound is a quality restaurant just up the hill, overlooking the sound. The location is attractive, the building and decor interesting, and the food good. The prices might be a few dollars higher than some in Bar Harbor, but the food quality and experience make it a good value. It is possible to arrive by dinghy from nearby anchorages and Somes Harbor.

Reviews for Henry R. Abel and Co.
Our favorite get away with amenities, 2016-08-21
Captain: , Boca Raton, Fl (639)

As noted pick up moorings are on heavy lines, secure and well maintained. We dinghy to the floating dock. it's a 2 min. walk to Abels Lobster Restuarant.. You may call for a reservation 207-276-5827. A wonderful meal and overnight on the mooring.. The trip up Sommes Sound is beautiful, in iteself. Abels Yard itself, seems closed on the weekend we were here. Would not be a summer without a trip to Abels ay least once.

Very accommodating, 2016-08-16
Captain: , Niantic, CT (337)

My family and I came by here in our 19-foot O'Day Mariner looking for a place to stay. While there aren't many amenities, and the moorings themselves are exposed to the prevailing south and southwesterly winds, the owner and assistants were very pleasant and accommodating. Although we ended up going someplace else instead of staying there, $35 a night for a mooring is reasonable, and a dockhand gave us as much water as we needed.

Pumpout boat available, 2015-09-01
Captain: , Patrick AFB Florida (1254)

Abel Marine has a pumpout boat that will travel just about anywhere in Sommes Sound, given a little time and a phone call to make arrangements. The same large pontoon boat is usually at a mooring just off the yard and you can pull up to it and tie off to pump out there - call the yard and someone will come out to actually operate the pumpout. A great service!

Secure Moorings, 2015-07-26
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1011)

We picked up a heavy mooring with a practical long and purposely heavy pennant with floats and a convenient pick up. Secure even in the strong pre and post frontal winds experienced recently. $35 per night.

Excellent AT&T service

Ashore you will find Abel's lobster pound restaurant with some of Maine's cleanest clams and plumpest lobster, which makes the journey up lovely Sommes Sound worth the trip.

Good place in a E or SE blow, 2014-08-13
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1244)

Safe place to hide at the northern end of Somes Sound. Deep water cove. Mooring balls have long painters with pick up buoys. All are first come with no reservations. The yard does not monitor VHF, so use phone for info. This end of the Sound is where the mega yachts come to ride out a blow.

Nice rental moorings, 2012-06-30
Captain: , Southwest Harbor (100)

Big red balls with pickup buoys attached, spacious and protected. Abel's lobster pound is also at the wharf serving tasty but pricey fare with a smile.

Ables Boatyard, 2011-01-11
Captain: , Rye, NY (113)

While this boatyard does not have fuel, it does have facilities capabale of handling most repairs for large yachts. It is well protected, behind a reef exposed at low tide. with a good deep water docking facilities and heavy moorings. This area of Somes Sound is also used by mega yachts as a hurricane hole.

Convenient and Quiet, 2009-07-11
Captain: , Occoquan, VA (456)

Abel boat yard is just that, not really a marina with full services. However, it is spotless and amazingly convenient to anywhere on Mt. Desert Island because the FREE Island Explorer bus service runs right by Abel's driveway. The bus service can take you just about anywhere - Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and on and on. Recommended for the self-sufficient visitor. The moorings are huge!
