Reviews for Hawks Cay Resort and Marina
horrible slip, 2017-07-18
Captain: , Marathon, Fl (30)

Stayed here for 3 nights. Called on radio when arriving at 1730. Lady answered the radio and said a guy would meet us at slip to assist in docking. Nobody ever showed up, so the folks 2 slips down came over to lend a hand.
When we tied down the stern of the boat the entire cleat pulled up out of the old wood deck. Reported that to the office, but was never repaired during our stay. Nothing has been changed in years on the row of docks we stayed on. (Slip 31). They advertise cable, but in our slip the cable was about 3 feet under water. The new restaurant at the marina is now open, but very expensive: $18.00 for a hamburger. They have 2 showers, 1 has been remodeled, the other is the same as when I stayed here 7 years ago. Filthy. Tampons, diapers, and trash just piled up on the floor in the corner next to the toilet. No trash can in that area. I expect a lot more for $200.00 per night.

Captain: , Marco Island, FL (1145)

The bathrooms were flithy! This was at 7:00am when they first opened! Disgraceful given the prices...

UPDATE - The new wood docks are in. There are no concrete docks. - don't know if this was a change or never the plan. The new restaurant is just about finished...maybe 2 or 3 weeks out. New management has taken over in February and the service seems to be better. One of the dock hands has no clue what a spring line is...but that's teachable. The negative I have is in addition to an amenities fee, they nickel and dime you for almost everything.

The concrete docks still haven't gone in and the woods docks are falling apart. The heads have been redone and they are beautiful. The dockside resturant that burned down a couple of years ago hasn't been replaced so you have to go to the lagoon for a restaurant. Still a nice place...

We were told the marina and resort are getting a make over.. Which is over due. The heads were old which aren't bad...but they were dirty. The dock boards were splintered, etc. They said concrete docks were going in. The location is fantastic, grounds beaitiful, tennis courts, lagoon, etc. Very protected but expensive. Maybe it will be worth it once it's renovated.

Great place with lots to do for all members of the family. If you are looking for laid back old FL keys, this isn't it. This is a well produced full service resort. Good power, dock, etc. This is the kind of spot my wife would like because it has many things to offer, pools, hot tubs, spa, etc. Not cheap but does offer a Boat US discount. Hard to beat if you are looking for amenities.

This is the best spot in the KEYS for boats, 2016-07-26

I stayed here a few months ago on my way north for about 4 nights. the Marina is great the staff is well trained to help with anything you need. docks are in great shape, not sure why the other reviews say differently. its very protected and you can dock in any condition. Dock master ED will give you advice if you call before you come. strong power and frendly people, lots to do here it would be ideal for a family looking for water activities. Thanks for having me Hawks Cay

Spent 1 week here over the 4th of july - docks are redone, power and water were great - the showers and heads were good and clean too - a lot to do here

Trying their best ..., 2016-02-10
Captain: , Charleston (80)

The docks are undergoing repair. Decking is new and the uneven spots can trip you up. Pilings allow you to nestle up to the dock for tying up but beware, some are badly splintered. The splintered pilings bind the lines in a rising and falling tide (about 3 feet). The water pressure is low but serviceable. We can take a shower, flush the heads, and the washing machine works; all depend on at least 25 psi water pressure. Shore power is reliable but the improved Internet covers only the villa end of the marina. Streaming tv is iffy at best and there is cable at some of the posts with a cable decoder but you have to guess if you have a good post. The dock store has some staples but the nearest provisioning is several miles away in Marathon.
The best part of Hawk's Cay Marina is the dock staff. Ed, the dockmaster, and Mark and Brenda are very attentive.
The $39 facility fee allows crews the run of the resort and I suppose covers utilities. They discount fuel and dockage for almost any organization, which is a good thing, because the value is not quite there, yet. The restaurant behind the marina burned down two years, ago and it is being rebuilt. The restaurants in the resort are adequate and overpriced ($22 for buffet breakfast).
Give the marina a try. They have vacancies at the height of the season, the terrible weather this season not withstanding. The marina affords good protection in a blow. The entrance canal is wide enough for one boat to come in or out and there a a few shallow areas but the dock staff will talk you in.

Run Down Docks, 2016-01-21
Captain: , stump pass (10)

We were there in June 2014. We had planned on staying three nights and diving the area during the day. We spent one night and could not get out of there fast enough. The docks were run down, the water pressure was nonxistent, and power was not working on all the slips. The night before we arrived fishing poles were stolen off a couple of the boats in the marina. We were told not to leave anything out on our boat. The next morning a local deputy was making rounds on a bike. I asked him what was going on and he told me about a the theft problem at the Marinna. Management told us that they were planning to rebuild the docks and apologized.

Hawks Cay was great again..., 2015-03-27
Captain: , Hillsboro (10)

We just left Hawks Cay Marina after staying for 7 days with the family. We enjoy fishing out of this marina and have for many years. The resort is beautiful with 5 pools, a spa, restaurants, etc. Although the marina is in need of an update (as mentioned in other reviews), it is set to start later this year. Even still, you still get a lot for the price you pay. Beverly is and has always been terrific to deal with. We always find her to be most helpful and she goes out of her way to make you feel welcomed. Joseph was also very helpful on this trip around the docks.

When entering the main marina, stay close to the docks for the deepest water and do not cut through the middle of the basin. Marina monitors channel 10.

Very beautiful, 2015-03-06
Captain: , Stuart, fl (40)

Love marina with ok docks but it is very calm for staying on boat. Price is up there but it is a resort and worth it if you take advantage of all the things they have to offer. My only complaint is showers arew a little walk because they haven't finished construction on boating showers at marina. Have to walk to spa to use showers which close at 7pm. Need to get cable box at marina (which is free) but can't seem to get it to work because contacts or plug is not used often. Very helpful and very nice staff that will go out of the way for you. Well marked entrance coming in but little confusing at first and definitely plenty of water. Shallow spot is closer to marina where it is still at least 5ft of water. Channel coming in is at least 10ft.

Very nice resort, but marina section in need of remodeling, 2015-01-13
Captain: , US East Coast (1116)

I can see why this place have mixed reviews. From purely marina standpoint, you don%u2019t get a lot. The docks are very small and narrow, and in a need of remodeling, pilings looked chewed up. The fingers are shorts.

The property is very nice and clean. You get tons of activities to choose from. The location and setup is great. The largest pool had temp close to 90s. They have salt pond for those who%u2019s not a big fan of chlorine pools. But, being there for the holidays, we felt that the beach bars personnel was under staffed.

Bring or rent bikes to toure the isalnd or take dinghy to explore canals.

Resort fee gets you access to everything and you do feel being in a resort.

Disappointed, 2014-08-18
Captain: , ft myers beach (790)

I should have heeded the reviews, but took a chance and could not be much more disappointed. We had a dock power failure at 2AM. Got up, put some clothes on and unplugged and used the next pedastal, it worked for two hours. Repeat to the next pedastal. It had bare wired on 50amp dangling. Extended the power cord to its full length and got power. Prior to going fishing the next day, we reported the problem. On return plugged in and all ok. Showered for dinner and u guessed it the power went out. Went to the office and they said no one had told them and we were only ones with a problem! So no repairs made, they said I could move to another slip, just what I wanted to do at that time- but we did it and had power all night. Boat a couple of slips over said he had gone to third pedastal and he too complained days before. Mike on the dock is only good thing at the marina, the dock is falling apart, I would be warry of a dock fire due unsafe wiring. Resort grounds and pools are great. They did comp one of our two nights after a little bitching. They say new docks are coming , but they also said they would repair the electrics. Again I should have listened to the previous reviews.

Hawks Cay Marina, 2014-06-26
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (90)

Not worth the cost. Docks are rickety, pilings are splintery, boaters facilities were dirty and in disrepair. Fuel cost more than Key West. Would not go back until they completly revamp the marina. Hotel and pool area were good. There is really only one restaurant. Not worth the stop better to go on to Marathon.

Docks need replacement, 2014-05-22
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (220)

Hawks Cay Resort has been a favorite of ours for many years. In May we stopped in with plans to stay at least 2 days. The resort itself has had quite the facelift and looks better than ever. The marina, however, is sorely in need of the same. We found it difficult to properly tie our boat to their docks, which have short piers and are lacking in the number of available pilings or cleats to tie to. We left after one day. We have a 48' power boat. The marina is rather costly and they charge a usage fee for the resort; we will not go back until the docks have been upgraded.

good place, 2014-03-12
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1421)

Pulled in on way to Key West. Docked on finger pier. Mike is great on the docks. He is there when you need him. Docks could use some help but not bad. Lots of fishing charter boats there. Showers were good. Ships store great. We ran into Marathon for dinner where there are great places. Don't depend on website reservations as they don't always seem to work. It didn't work for us but they took care of docking our 58' anyway.

Not what it used to be..., 2013-11-15
Captain: , Miami (100)

We stayed on two different occasions this past July and August. Docks and bathrooms are run down. The 1st time they were still clearing the Mexcican restaurant that was burned. Staff is friendly and willing to help but overall it's not a "luxury" experience though you do pay premium prices. Good resort facilities that you can use as you have to pay the resort fee. The price of fuel is typically about $1/gallon higher than other places. Be extra carefull of the strong current in the channel and when docking. Stay close to the docks when maneuvering.

Excellent staff and lots of family fun..., 2013-07-19
Captain: , MA and Southwest FL (538)

We spent 10 days here this July. Overall this is a great place to take the family for all sorts of fun. 5 pools, restaurants and kids activities abound. We enjoyed SCUBA diving with the Dive Duck Key group there as well.

Only 3 things that need fixing...the docks are aged, the marina guest showers/restrooms are run down and outdated, and marina guests only get a paper pass whereas resort guests get a card key which creates problems for access to the sunset pool and for some resort employees who don't know how to process your charges. For a resort of this caliber we would have expected something much better in these areas.

The staff was awesome. Bent over backwards for us and helped us whenever we needed.

Marina not what it used to be, 2013-07-07
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (260)

I have stayed at Hawks Cay each summer for the last five years and typically have had a great experience...not so much this time. The docks are in disrepair: spotty power, low water pressure and cable TV that gets you 17 Spanish channels and a couple of US based channels. We were in slip 44 and there was no wifi either... not a big deal, but they do charge premium prices. The dockhands seemed not to care much...garbage pail behind our slip stayed full for more than a day after we asked it to be emptied- twice. We signed up for 4 nights via MarinaLife to get the "Summer Savings Special" of 15% off the slips, but it was "forgotten" about when we checked out...only after calling twice did it get credited. So, even though Hawks Cay has been an annual trip for me, I am going to skip it next year.

Slice of Paradise, 2013-05-27
Captain: , Punta Gorda (42)

Highly recommend the channel approach to marina at high tide as well as close to slack. The shallowest area in the channel was adjacent to the dolphin pool in the resort which indicated we had a 5.6' depth sounding (we had a 5%u2019 draft). The marina staff on VHF when hailed initially were told this was our first time to their marina. She was very thorough in providing navigational information to marina. We were forewarned that we should not come in at low tide since there is a 5' depth location in channel.
We were set up in a terrific transient slip location (#27) given we were a sailboat (bow in) so we could be separated from all the fishing guide traffic, which was interesting to watch. The dockhand, Josh, was wonderful. He greeted us with smile and helped us tie off as well as set up shore power, brought us a step stool for the women to get on and off the boat, and even jumped on board to help us retrieve a cup with a boat hook that had fallen overboard.
In terms of shore power, I am pleased to report that we had no issues. We had a 50 amp pigtail split to 2 30's. We were on guard from reading an earlier report. Josh explained that the dock area that has all the commercial vessels can have problems simply due to so much amperage being drawn.
The marina office staff very pleasant and welcoming and were helpful in providing all the information we needed.
What a wonderful resort and atmosphere especially at night...great ambience. Granted a bit pricy, but we knew that ahead of time especially when called a %u201Cresort%u201D. We enjoyed so much that we extended our stay by a day.

Twilight zone, 2013-05-15
Captain: , miami beach (60)

Where do I begin? Horrible facilities. Marina in need of major renovation. Power was very unstable. Ran generator the whole time. Staff was confrontational and arrogant. I would fire most of them. The only reason I am rating 2 stars is because the rest of the resort is exceptional. What happened to the marina? Fix the staffs attitude and the facilities and you would have a great place.

Resort is terrific, marina condition deteriorating, 2013-04-30
Captain: , Hertford, NC (215)

Stayed for 7 weeks here to have family visit in small groups, as we did in Mrach April 2011. Docked 45 ft sailboat on slips that were not in the strong marina tide current, but pumpout and fuel trips to other side had to be timed (generally at slack - yes, slack - 2-3 hrs after high or low tide.
Marina service and staff: Excellent. (Beverly, Mike, Jose, Danny, and Demetri)
Condition of marina: poor.
Resort just did multi-million $ remake but left out the marina totally. Toms' Harbor restaurant (2011), which was good, changed to Tio's Cantina last year, but that burned down spectacularly the morning of April 8. No loss there (except for property loss to marina, of course) as food was mediocre. Prices are very high for incidentals but dockage for 5 weeks was reasonable. Ship store fairly well stocked.
The marina can get busy since all of the resort's water activity (offshore fishing charters, diving, scorkeling, parasailing, jet skis and kayaks) are based in the marina, so don't take a slip along the main pier in front of the marina store and other offices - pelicans will love to roost (and other things) on your boat while fish are weighed, gutted and fileted.
We would do it again, however, as it is a wonderful resort for the grand kids (7-13) with three pools and Indies Club to let them run free for the day.

Nice but expensive in isolated resort, 2013-02-18
Captain: , Plantation Yacht Harbor, Islamorada, Fla. Keys (4666)

Nice marine in a very nice resort. Services available, but pricey. Rating would be higher except for the relatively remote location. However, anything you need is available in Marathon which is about 15 minutes away by car.

Captain: , St. James, NC (253)

This is a very nice resort, great dolphin show, excellent restaurant at main hotel($$$$), very nice hardtru tennis courts, a really great place to take the grandchildren, amazing things for the kids. We stayed for the month of February, won't do it again. It is a very long way to anything, $20 one way to the grocery or to anything in Marathon. Even Enterprise charges you $20 each way to pick you up and bring you back. The ships store pricing is way more than expensive. Great for a few days only.

My family and I love Hawks, 2012-01-19
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (334)

I really loved staying here. The facilities are well maintained. There are pools and restaurants. Be very carefull when taking the "outer" channel in. Take the first right. Secondly, in front of the dolphin pool is very shallow and has strong currents. And finally, if you need fuel get help if the are tidal currents as there are very dangerous rocks to your starboard.

Very nice, but expensive, 2011-04-30
Captain: , Beaufort Morehead Yacht Club (221)

Depth of 5 feet near dolphin pins at low tide.

Very relaxing for the crew, with access to 3 pools. Be prepared to pay a premium, but worth it for a night.

Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (1089)

A very nice marina / resort, especially if you have kids. Lots of activities for all -- Dolphin Center, Fly Fishing and Deep Sea charters, Snorkel and Dive trips, pools, tennis, etc. Be sure and ask for entry instructions before entering the harbor. Not a problem if you know where you are going, but be careful of depths and current. Not much else around (Marathon is 11 miles away) but Hawk's Cay has most everything you need for a few days.

Nice stopover between Miami and Key West, 2010-05-04
Captain: , Dallas, TX (726)

Stayed over coming and going to Key West. Didnt see much of the resort except for the marina and tennis courts. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Diesel was about $0.50 higher than in Key West. Great restaurant just steps away from the marina.

Place to stop with kids onboard, 2009-08-19
Captain: , Knoxville, TN (1788)

We stopped at this resort mostly because we have children onboard and it is a good place for families. There is a kid’s area which has a daily camp (1/2 or full-day), a clubhouse with activities, and a Pirate ship splash play area + another pool. The main building includes restaurants, a pool, a saltwater lagoon, and the Dolphin Connection (for an extra fee, you can swim with the dolphins). There are also tennis courts and an adult pool. Nothing is very far away, but they have a “trolley” that drives around to help you get from one location to another.
At the marina, the docks are wood and in good condition. The marina store is well stocked with groceries (dry goods, Boar’s Head products, dairy, fresh fruit, donuts, drinks, etc), liquor (yes, liquor!) & beer, basic medicines, basic fishing gear, and charts. Also located here is a dive shop (with daily trips), an ATM, Tom’s Harbor Restaurant, and charter fishing boats of various sizes.
The common belief is that this place is pricey, but with the BoatUS discount, we found it no pricier than any place in Key West (during off season).

Pricey but very nice, 2008-03-12
Captain: , Chesapeake Bay (592)

We ducked in because of bad weather and stayed for six days. Amenities are outstanding, even with much construction going on. The place has changed ownership/management and many improvements are on the way.

Downside is no shopping nearby, but I guess if you can afford this place (we really can't), you can afford to eat in their excellent restaurant.

I stopped there on feb 23rd while on a delivery.

The resort is great and resort staff very friendly. On the other hand, i wasn't impressed with the "what is it with all these late arrivals, we leave at 4pm" comment when i called the marina to book the slip. Directions to the assigned slip were wrong, they expected us to come from the unmarked channel by the bridge (at night with a 54' MY). Shaky power pedestal and finger piers that are way too short making boarding problematic, with a slip that doesn't let you back all the way in due to shallow waters. Maybe it was that last slip in the corner but we were not even warned about it.

all that for $5 a foot. only worth it if you're going to get in early and leave later the next day to enjoy the resort, pool, etc...

Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (118)

We loved our week long stay at this resort! The people are nice, an adult only pool, the marina is protected and virtually any water sport you want is available. We water skied, wake boarded, swam with the dolphins and ate some very good meals. It's not cheap but well worth it! We'll be back.

This is the NICEST marina in the Keys. Great for Kids and adults. Adults only pool and kid friendly pool. Several nice restaurants on the resort. Always accomodating.
Also have a swim with the dolphins thing here that is nice.
