Reviews for Haverstraw Marina
Servicable Stopover, 2017-09-19
Captain: , East Coast (194)

Convenient, easy-in and out if transiting the Hudson but not a "destination" marina. Previous reviews say it all about the tired, noisy and hot docks, friendly office staff and good restaurant. Fuel dock is easy access with good prices. No dockhands came to slip on arrival. And it is clear that several of the resident boaters in the area we stayed resent transients. Be prepared for the possibility of an unfriendly welcome and cold shoulder from some. We were told this was not unusual by one of the nice boaters we met. Very unfortunate.

Update - September, 2017: Important note about arriving after hours%u2026 Stopped in for a night to break up a trip. Was assisted by a very nice person on the phone when trying to get slip availability info prior to reserving on Dockwa. We made it clear that we would be arriving after hours which I was told would not be an issue. However, you need a key card to re-enter the docks from shore unless someone happens to be around to let you in (it was a weekday off-season, not a lot of people around). If arriving after hours be sure to ask in advance about getting a key card as no accommodation for that was offered which almost became a significant issue with having to walk our furry mate. Also, was at their fuel dock the next morning for the 9:00 scheduled opening. No one showed until almost 9:30 and only after we called so be prepared for a delay if you are counting on fueling and heading out first thing. Possibly more of an off-season issue but good marina managers understand how carefully cruisers plan their days.

NOT at ALL what we expected! Rundown, 2017-09-09
Captain: , Seafarers Marina (10)

We were at Haverstraw marina over the Labor Day weekend. Rundown docks and facilities are an understatement. Wish I would've read through the second page of preceding reviews here on active captain, and we would have avoided this nightmare! Finger dock for our 33 foot dock was so warped and dilapidated, that we worried about breaking free in the middle of the night. Marina doesn't have wave protection as advertised, not to mention that we were abruptly jostled quite severely as we entered the marina and immediately ran aground on top of what a boater there called a nasty shoal or huge conglomerate of mud and rock. There is NOTHING to do once you're at the marina aside from going to their one super expensive restaurant, which is a HIKE from the boat. Loud music at the restaurant bar there playing till all hours of the night, and dinner would've been slightly more tolerable had their been a "smoking section"- instead, you'll find yourself surrounded by chainsmokers and loud swearing folks galore. Ugh! Tried walking our dog on the super hot metal ( aluminum docks), and it was a nightmare, especially as the docks go on and on for what seems like half a mile, and then another mile (plus) walk to a dog walking area.
No one to help us dock despite several calls, both on phone, and over VHF. We never have had the urge to complain about a marina, but this was just over the top. Felt compelled to let others know ahead of time. Definitely will not return.

Nice marina, spectacular views!, 2017-09-07
Captain: , Edgewater, NJ (130)

Marina was well run and clean. Rest rooms were fine. Olympic size pool was really great for family. Restaurant had mediocre food and lousy service but some of the best views on the Hudson River. We will be back just for the views!

Ok place, for a short stopover, 2017-05-01
Captain: , Havre De Grace MD (170)

Large marina with all floating docks. Docks are metal and in okay condition. Very long walk from the gated entrance to the end of some piers. The marina had good depth and very easy access to the Hudson river.

Pricy but well worth it, 2016-07-14
Captain: , haverstraw (191)

I rent my slip for the summer here and I must say its a wonderful place. It almost feels like everytime I enter the marina im in a vacation villiage. I read a review where someone said that Haverstraw Marina didn't want transient costumers, this place is always full of transient costumers. Fresh Water,Electricity,Cable,TV,Wifi,Showers in the marina and a wonderful restaurant/night club right in the marina, what more can you ask for?

Michigander, 2016-05-01
Captain: , Transient - Plymouth, Mi (811)

Dockage OK, fuek dock hand excellent. Food was excellent. Beer selection severly lacking, but MGR stated would get better later in season.

Never again -frustrated, 2015-10-03
Captain: , south carolina (10)

Arrived at Haverstraw marina on 10/1 thinking it might be a good spot to wait out hurricane, but was wedged into a dilapidated, very warped and rusty old metal dock that was too tight. If that weren't enough, there were only 3 extremely small cleats to use to tie up our 50 foot boat, and our stern cleat came loose from the dock after only a few hours.
Previous reviewer is way off with many facts. The haverstraw marina in inside an industrial park and is surrounded by a huge industrial parks with nothing around whatsoever unless you take an expensive cab to a run down Shop Rite that isn't all that big. Not even anything to do in the town, and we spoke with several regulars there. It also is not anywhere near the Tappan Zee bridge which is a good 8 miles south of the marina.

Haverstraw marina, 2015-09-30
Captain: , Marion, MA (50)

Set in a county park on the Tappen Zee, it is a nicer marina than the other comments. Full services available with a good marine hardware store, yacht brokers and sail loft. A nice restraunt has reopened on site after a fire closed the previous one. The fuel dock person was very friendly and helpful, as were the office personnel. My wife grew up here, so we may have overlooked some flaws.

In Stony Point is a nice Shoprite, about a 10 minute drive. Enterprise is a mile away and will pick up. We had a three day weekend rental at $9.95 per day!

Hot metal docks and better alternatives out there, 2015-08-14
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (42)

Docks are very noisy, old ,metal, and not at all easy to tie off from. Wish we had read over all of the past postings prior to deciding to come here. Every finger slip near us only had a front and rear cleat. Nothing to cleat off a spring line anywhere. The walk to the one restaurant way intland there was a hike, and it was very overcrowded with lots of smokers and just too loud for our taste. Took a taxi to the shop rite which ended up being too far away and too costly to get to. Very odd looks from a lot of local boaters. Wouldn't even consider for a moment if we had brought out dog along.

we really liked this place! maybe the older comments need to be scrubbed., 2015-07-21
Captain: , Jacksonville (100)

very helpful and friendly staff, beautiful setting. Nice Tiki bar on the river. Lots of play space for the dog. we'll be back.

Very overcrowded pool ; hot, noisy aluminum docks, 2015-07-21
Captain: , Liberty Landing (10)

We went here because the marina offers fuel. Saying the pool was overcrowded is an understatement. We weren't allowed to BBQ off our boat, and the slips are tightly spaced, not to mention that there was no mid ship cleat on our finger pier. The slips next to us had misssing cleats also. Staff was pleasant and helpful, but the VERY hot aluminum docks really weren't a treat for our dog. Not a pretty area with a very industrial setting surrounding us. It is a working boatyard, but we would rate it higher if not for the unwelcome looks from some of their seasonal boaters. Restaurant food was good, but very pricey. Tiki bar was full of smokers. Couldn't get wifi to work either. Not trying to sound like a moaner, but we'll pass on this one next time up the river.

The right stopping off point, 2015-07-15
Captain: , Wantagh NY (601)

We generally stop here heading up the Hudson, fuel dock has gas and diesel. We BBQ'ed up in the picnic area once and used the very nice large pool. We also ate at the restaurant on a realyl hot day and was very good.

Too big and in an industrial location, 2015-07-03
Captain: , Regatta Pointe (30)

Second time visiting to simply get parts and will be our last. Parts were considerably more expensive than promised over the phone, not to mention the most crucial ones said to be delivered for us were not ordered after all. This is a very large ( 1,100 boat slips) marina that is inside a very industrial setting. We thought there might be something other than the one restaurant there which was too far of a hike to get to. Other boater said there are taxis that can bring you to other restuarants, but it would be too pricey since the restaurants are over 25+ minute drives and not close-by at all.
Our small dogs didn't like the hot aluminum docks either. Some fellow boaters were sort of welcoming, but most were unfriendly, unfortunately. Thought boaters were supposed to be helpful and cheerful to one another!

Sub par on every level, 2015-06-26
Captain: , Lewes, DE (178)

I have had the unhappy experience of having work done by George Samalot at this marin

Good Stop to Visit West Point, 2015-05-10
Captain: , Seattle Wa (200)

The docks are pretty noisy when people walk by if you are tied alongside as we were. We rented an Enterprise car to visit West Point and the rental people were friendly and efficient. The on-site restaurant is good and modestly priced with nice outside seating. The primary negative for us is that there is not BBQing allowed, even a Magma hanging over the side. Cooking below in 85 degree weather tends to heat things up. The local Shoprite is lame. The locals seemed very friendly to us. One of them has a heck of a voice and entertained the marina folks on Friday night. Quite a walk to any stores except the on-site chandelry (Samalot) which is quite good and the restaurant.

Haverstraw Sept 2014, 2014-09-24
Captain: , Toronto (40)

Odd that the reviewers mentioned unfriendly members, our experience was the opposite. We had a problem with our steering, met up with a member at the fuel dock who had the next size Carver up, and he couldn't have been more helpful. The Chandlery staff were also very helpful in finding the right hydraullic fluid and a useful nozzle to get it into the tiny access port on our helm. The restaurant was great, restrooms/showers very nice. A great stay and no issues with the members. Docks are a bit noisy but it wasn't a big issue. The dock helper ran over to help us dock at our assigned slip. We'd happily stay there again.

Transients not welcome, 2014-08-07
Captain: , United States (3192)

This is a huge marina (as other reviewers have written) and there are few slips for transients, scattered here and there.

The locals were extremely hostile. They made it 100% clear that they do not like transients and would rather not have them at "their" docks. The management is apparently aware of this hostility but has done nothing to address it, making them complicit.

That's on top of already high prices, and the nerve to ask for an extra $10 to use the pool.

We were here to visit family, who took us out for dinner. But if you do not have transport, there is nothing accessible from here other than the on-site chandlery (also expensive) and on-site casual restaurant unless you call a taxi.

It's one of the few marinas in the area than can accommodate our draft, but we'll skip it next time -- plenty of friendlier stops along the Hudson.

Large Marina, 2014-07-30
Captain: , Islamorada, Florida (262)

Nice, large marina with good facilities. The rumors are true...the aluminum docks are noisy depends on the weather and how many people are walking around. Renovations from Sandy are basically complete and nicely done. On premise resturant, The Hudson Water Club, is excellent, but a little pricey. Some local restuarants and pubs will pick you up for free as an alternative.

update on fuel prices, 2014-06-27
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Stopped here for fuel and pumpout on June 19, 2014. The attendant at the fuel dock was very good at docking our boat and handled the pumpout himself--even insisting on two washout cycles after pumping. What a nice feeling that he cared enough to do a good job! Gas was $4.47.9 and diesel was $4.20.9.

Go for the pool and restaurant in hot days, 2013-08-04
Captain: , Sorel-Tracy (50)

Respectable marina with pool and very good restaurant. No dockhand on arrival and since it is a huge marina it was not easy to find our slip. The aluminum docks are noisy and hot . The marina as some rules and that%u2019s OK but since none of them were explain to us by the unfriendly staff, we learn by deduction some of them; no BBQ to be seen on resident%u2019s boat so we verified and affectively they are not allowed in the marina.

Haverstraw, 2013-03-27
Captain: , Clayton, NY (655)

Nice facility. You can get a cab to take you to restaurants and shopping, not something we are accustomed to.

Very dissapointing, 2013-03-03
Captain: , Chelsea Piers (30)

Haverstraw marina is just TOO large. We stayed here right before Hurricane Sandy. It's a major hike to walk to their restaurant, which I heard was subsequently demolished tragically by the hurricane. The slips are tightly spaced and the docks are made of a noisey and super slippery aluminum. Our dog hated the heat that the docks retained from the sun at noon. On a positive note, they do have deep water, but then again, friends of ours made the right choice to stay across the river on the east bank, and they had plenty of deep water as well. Seems that there are only these 2 deep water marinas around until you go all the way up past the Newburgh area, where we also found out the marinas have absolutely no break wall protection. I would definitely not stay here again. Nice folks running the marina, but it's a zoo filled with characters that belong on the Jersey Shore show

Pass on this one, 2013-02-15
Captain: , marina del ray (70)

We originally felt very comfortable after we had made reservations over the phone. Upon arriving at the marina, things quickly changed. The marina is HUGE, and slips are extremely narrow. Dockhands are young and inexperienced. The walk to the marina office in itself is a hike and a half! We didn't realize until after we paid for 2 nights that there was no town to walk to, and nothing much to do at the marina aside from going to their one restaurant. (Been told that it sadly got destroyed by hurricane Sandy a month after we visited). The girls who run the marina are sweet, but this is definitely not a place to overnight. We came because of all of their advertising, and really wish we would've asked more of our friends before booking here.
The docks are absolutely NOT conducive to walking any dogs since their aluminum and get VERY hot, not to mention noisy and extremely slippery (with dew) at night.
We found out afterwards that there are other choices on the other side of the river.

Nice Marina, Well Protected, 2013-01-16
Captain: , Edgewater (321)

This is a very large marina and very well run. We had a slip here for a year. We found management to be friendly but impersonal. There is no waves not even a ripple in the marina, a lot of people are looking for this. There is an excellent but expensive restaurant on premises with a nice Tiki Bar deck over looking the Hudson, very often a band plays on the wekends. The ship store is well stocked and the bathrooms and showers are adequate. The fingers are narrow and often people would have chairs out on the dock which had to be moved if you wanted to bring a cart down the dock. Croton Bay is a 5 minute run across the river and is a nice anchorage area to hangout on the weekends. My only complaint is that you could not BBQ on your boat since they had had a fire there in the past. There were quite a few BBQ pits on land around the docks. However, we were never able to use them as every one would be reserved very early in the morning for this group or that group. Other than that is is very nice!

The marina is open, 2012-12-19
Captain: , Haverstraw Marina (74)

Haverstraw is open for dockage, storage and repairs. However the fuel dock is not there. Sandy wiped out the fuel dock. They are working on repairs and are planning for a new dock in the spring

Well maintained -- but very big, 2012-10-19
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

This is an enormous marina -- more than a thousand slips. However, they maintain it well with docks in great shape. If you're looking for the personal touch -- you may want to look elsewhere -- but if you want good docks, a very well stocked boat store and a very easy place to get into thats well protected, this is a good choice.

Top marks for both sides!, 2012-10-11
Captain: , Rochester, NY (493)

We stayed for several days while Walter fixed the tranny on our trusty old A4. I suppose this a big place for anyone without a bicycle, but the repair facilities were top notch, the restaurant was super the ship's store was great. The staff at all levels was super professional. Greg, a young man from the ship's store, was especially helpful in a number of ways. The local village was founded inn 1666 or so says the sign. Especially cool was Gilligan's, a mom-and-pop restaurant on the north side - great food and the biggest peach melba ever!

Haverstraw Marina, 2012-09-17
Captain: , Toronto (280)

Another well-appointed marina, undoubtedly because the manager lives on her own boat in the marina! Walking access to a great restaurant/bar just outside the marina gates - the joint was jumping even at 3:00 on a Thursday!

My Home Marina, 2012-08-03
Captain: , Haverstraw (31)

Haverstraw Marina is my homeport and I have been here for over 15 years. I have read the other reviews and they are accurate, it is a large marina, and if you don't know where you are going it can be confusing, and the dock boys and girls are only there on the weekends, so docking help is not always available and yes it can be a long walk to the bathrooms/showers and the office, but I am way out on Green dock and it is quite, which I like. When coming into the Marina the fuel dock is to starbord and is easy to get in and out of, but is usually very busy on the weekends with boat queued up to get fuel. The pump out is also at the fuel dock, and they have both diesel and gas availabe, as you come in the gas pump come up first. I like the marina very much, if I did't then I would still be here after 15 years. The bathrooms can get messy on the weekends as there is a lot of use and there are only 2 showers stalls in each of the men's and women's bath rooms. The Marina does have a pool, and there is a restraunt on site, a little pricy, but you can eat in or out, and on weekends they have a live band playing on the deck, next to the outside bar.

great place great food, 2012-07-28
Captain: , West shore Marlboro NY (825)

very nice marina 2 dock boys came out to guide us in and tie us up hook up water and electric and cable tv. nice pool but weather did not let us enjoy it. docks are in great shape and well protected from river 1000 slips !!! food in resturant is very good wine a bit pricy at 9/ a glass but this wont stop us from coming back

A little too Big, 2012-06-07
Captain: , Palm Beach, FL (133)

This is a VERY large marina and there is no staff to help in docking. We were lucky that someone got off their boat to show us which slip we assigned.

It took us 15 min to walk to the office, and you need a GPS to find your way back. There is a lot of turns just to get off the dock. The docks are in good shape, and all metal. I little noisy when the wind is blowing out of the NE.

The resturant is decent, and they have a nice pool. You can not walk to town and there is really nothing around the marina.

Well Protected, 2012-05-28
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

Stayed here 5/26/12. In a land locked basin so well protected. Floating docks but finger piers were tender (rolled from side to side when you walked on them). Had trouble finding our slip because docking instructions were hard to understand and docks are not marked in a way that is easy to see. Paid $3/ft because it was a holiday weekend but were told rate would normally have been less.

Long walk to shore. Industrial., 2011-09-19
Captain: , port washington (12)

Large marina with LONG walk to shore. Lots of industrial facilities right next to marina with noise and way too much smoke pollution right over the marina. -Wi Fi didn't work.
With the exception of the one restaurant there, there is not much to do unless you take an expensive cab ride. Still nothing to do in the town. No axe to grind with staff as they were polite.

Very large marina, 2011-08-22
Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

Very good docks, a long walk to the office, but people were helpful and friendly. Large pool for guest boaters. Great restaurant. Internet did not work, and the morning we left, they said Mac computers did not work for some reason. Should have advised us as we asked for help.

Big, complete, some drawbacks, lower rate this year, 2011-08-02
Captain: , Wicomico Church, VA (524)

Previous reviews are still all accurate. But rate was $2.25 per foot, down from $2.75 that we paid last year. Still no tie up help, long walk to shore, etc but a very large and complete facility.

Excellent stop, 2011-07-18
Captain: , Mashpee, MA (541)

$2.75/ft, new floating docks, clean showers. Noel's Irish Pub will pick you up ant the dock and has very good food, and we found a two for one special on Monday and I think also Tuesday's this summer.
Rtned 7/17/11 and is still the best in the area. Pool was crowded on this 90 degree day but very welcomed. Restaurant on the site is now open and right on the Hudson, eat inside or out, good food.

Classic Metro Marina, 2011-07-15
Captain: , Wickford, RI (560)

Very large, WiFi didn't work, dock card-key didn't work, long walk to shore. But people are helpful - came a long way out to help with lines when I told them I was alone; fuel dock staff very helpful. Beutiful view over the bay from restraunt.

A Tired Marina, 2011-06-29
Captain: , Jensen Beach FL (138)

This marina is looking like it has seen it's better days in the past. The docks are old. The electric on our slip had two bad 30 amp plugs our of 4. Fortunatly the two that worked were on seperate legs so we had 220 volts. There is no help to tie up during the week and we arrived during a 15 to 20 knot day and had to deal with it alone. I will not be back. The staff couldn't have cared less. I got docking instructions over the radio and could not tell what slip I should be in because the numbers are on the DOCK side and can not bee seen from a boat. There is a good restaurant located outside the gate but the down side of that is that it is pricey. The general feel is that the whole place is tired.

Good, big, full service, 2011-03-16
Captain: , Machias, ME (85)

Not a cheap marina, but definately full service including canvas repair. Very large marina and always busy. Gas dock is exceptionally easy to access and manned by pleasant knowledgeable people.

Nice Folks, Mediocre Facility, High Price, 2010-10-31
Captain: , Wilson, NY (432)

The very young staff were friendly and reasonably helpful. The marina is huge, it is a 5 minute walk to get off our dock. The restrooms and showers are not great. It is quite expensive.

large but nice, 2010-06-29
Captain: , Stockton Ca. (142)

Typical large marina, people were nice, good restaurant and facilities, pool , store etc

Waste of money - anchor and see the town, 2010-06-15
Captain: , Tellico Marina (290)

Must go to fuel dock to get directions - 20 minutes
Get map and they point to your dockiing - no help docking
Placed in slip to small for boat, scratched up side of boat.
Office is 1/2 mile from boat, got lost coming back - to many turns
Poor access for dog and to town.
Would not recommend ( first time in 8 months docking I felt this way. Our friends anchored, went to town and had a blast....

Never again!, 2010-06-14
Captain: , Palm Coast (792)

Arrived in pouring rain and was directed to fuel dock to receive a map of the marina so that we could find our slip in one of the biggest marinas we've ever visited. No help with docking available - a big problem for two senior citizens with a 52 foot boat.

We were put on a t-dock at our request. The dock (very skinny and anchored at the end with one piling) required the skills of an experienced tightrope walker to avoid falling into the water. The cleats can barely take a 1/4 inch line.

Not a repeat for us.

Nice facilities, good people, 2010-04-05
Captain: , East Greenbush, NY (745)

We spent a few years stopping here as a transient on the way from Champlain to Annapolis and beyond, but we kept our boat here over the Winter and all I can say is - the owner cares, the people in the office are very helpful and nice and the amenities are good. While it might be a bit of a hike from the transient area to the front gate (not as bad as the Megadock in Charleston though!), there's a bar/restaurant right outside the gate with live bands on the weekends. The bathrooms/showers are good as are the laundry facilities. The docks are kept in good shape. There are as many sailors as powerboaters, so there's always someone to talk to. It's also an easy days trip from here to NYC or Kingston. All in all, I'd highly recommend it.

Nice place, 2009-08-11
Captain: , Stuart FL Middletown RI (240)

Spent one night here on trip down the Hudson. Good facilities, although it is so big that you may find yourself in a slip very far away from the rest rooms and restaurant. Nice ship's store on the grounds. The restaurant setting is spectacular if the food is less so.

First Marina I used on the Hudson, 2009-07-22
Captain: , Oyster Bay, NY (74)

Prior to upgrading my boat I kept a McGregor 26 at this Marina. the facilities are great, the onsite restaraunt is nice to hang out at and the facilities will meet most boaters needs. Stay at the marina as the town is a little run down.

the industrial activity in this area can get a little nosiy but mostly one goes undisturbed.

Huge marina, 2009-05-29
Captain: , Silverthorne, CO (419)

Huge marina with 1000 slips. Our transient slip was a long walk to office, restrooms, laundry. Couple of miles to West Marine in town. They offered list of taxis, restaurants, etc. on check-in. Laundry room was clean.

Great Fuel Dock, 2007-09-29
Captain: , Stony Point, NY (79)

Great fuel dock and pumpout service -- gas prices are usually competitive or lowest for the area. Multiple pumpouts at the fuel dock. Lots of help on the dock to get you in and out quickly
