Enter the fairway marked by red and green bouys at the edge of the mooring field. There are three fairways, the southern most is for Handy Boat Service, the middle is for the Portland Yacht Club, and the northern fairway is for the Falmouth Town Docks.

Heading toward shore stay clear of the ledge within the rectangle marked by G17 and day mark YL. The fairway is wide and open until close to the docks, where a few moorings make the dock approach a little crowded, but managable, for a large boat.

Bus information, 2016-09-02
Captain: , Strafford, NH (448)

You can catch the #7 bus at the top of the hill near the top of the hour and ride to the Falmouth Shopping Center. Get a transfer and have it validated at Shaw's to get a free return to the marina.

This bus travels to Portland where I transfered to the #1 bus and got to the Amtrack Downeaster to travel to Boston. Various other buses are available for any destination available online.

Some changes needed but very nice stop, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (189)

Handy has a terrific restaurant and nice waterfront. If you have crew coming by car it will cost $10 per day to park. Be aware the bathrooms, showers and laundry are locked up in the evening and will not open again until 0800. This is something Handy should consider changing. Very friendly staff, beautiful grounds. Also, there are a few transient moorings close to the dock, but most of the mooring rentals are at the furthest end of Handy's massive mooring field. You will find it very difficult to connect to their wifi from this location and a strong wind from the SW makes for a bouncy night.

A great marina with a LARGE mooring field, 2015-07-08
Captain: , Boston (50)

Really friendly staff, great restaurant, and launch service that runs from 8AM-9PM. No pumpout here, but almost every other service you can imagine is available.

unquoted repair charges. , 2015-04-15
Captain: , Falmouth, ME (86)

This is our home port.
Marina and restaurant are fine.
We were hoping to have resolved our bill. Apparently not.
After losing our jib, they did refit the sails at our cost.
This was not the only lost item that has cost us for their mistakes.
A year later we are still at odds over the bill.

Great People, 2015-02-25
Captain: , Falmouth (10)

Good service, friendly atmosphere, excellent service personnel and launch operators.

Mixed review, 2014-10-27
Captain: , Portland, Maine (845)

We stayed here for a couple weeks on a friend's mooring. The anchorage is very exposed to wind and lots of fetch in most directions. No experience with the marina but Hallet sails did some exceptional work for us very quickly and at a reasonable cost. The restaurant here is very pricey with fair food. There are no shopping facilities within walking distance.

Beware the 'labour' charges, 2014-09-26
Captain: , wensleydale (890)

Despite being appalled by their labour costs (3.5 hrs @ $75/hr), I would still award three stars as I have no complaint about the quality of the task that they undertook (making a new forestay) and I must perhaps accept a degree of resposibility insofar as I was naieve enough to accept the statement: "Our Rigger's on holiday this week, so we can't give you a quotation, but don't worry, it'll be a fair price." Will I never learn?
I'm a mere novice, but I can and have measured/cut a 40' wire and swaged a fitting onto each end in comfortably under an hour, whereas Handyboat managed to expend 3.5 hours on the job, so almost $250 in labour charges. I'm aware that prices are higher up here than in the southern States, but over $200 more than the labour costs for a similar job done in Oriental seems a tad excessive?
I wouldn't advocate not using Handyboat, but if you're a transient/one-time customer, check that your pockets are deep.

friendly and efficient, 2014-09-11
Captain: , Salem Ma (430)

Since Portlan Yacth Services blew me off I needed to find a mooring somewhere else.

Handy was friendly and helpful. Mooring was $30 and included launch service.

Resturant was fancy and expensive. It was good but was really more interested in having a snadwich, which there weren't any on the menu.

Great Place to hang on a mooring, 2013-07-21
Captain: , East Greenwich, R.I. (40)

This is our first visit to Handy Boat but we will definitely be back. The people couldn't be nicer and more helpful. The free launch service is fantastic with very short wait times and very good, friendly drivers. The mooring field is huge and protected from all but SW winds when it can get choppy. It's a beautiful spot and very handy to Portland if you have a car. Our only negative comments are that the dock space is limited, the fuel price is not the best, and the pumpout dock does not look inviting. We dropped the mooring and took the short ride to Portland for fuel and pumpout. We don't understand why they don't have a pumpout boat for so many boats in the mooring field.
The shore facilities are top notch otherwise, with good rest rooms and showers and laundry and an excellent restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining. Our rating would be five stars if they had better pumpout service.

Well worth a visit, 2013-06-26
Captain: , Cumberland (10)

The recent renovations to the properrty have mede this into a first class marina. This year they have put in additional dock space which will allow them to accomodate more boats and those with "deep" drafts. Sorry to say that The Boathouse chandlery has closed but the Ace Hardware store in Falmouth now has a boating section with a fair selection of marine products. Also, West Marine and Hamiltons Marine have stores in downtown Portland.

Handy Boat/Handy Location, 2012-12-30
Captain: , Kingman Yacht Center Cataumet, MA (223)

We always visit Handy Boat when cruising Maine. Handy is located conveniently for cruising Casco Bay and visiting Portland (by car).
Handy has a large mooring field, two launches, a nice restaurant/bar, ships store and fuel. They can haul and repair your boat.
Short hop to Little Diamond Island, Jewell, the Goslongs and many more great anchorages.

Nice Facilities, 2012-07-30
Captain: , Berwyn (250)

Great place to get fuel and ice. Extremely friendly staff could not have been nicer! Thanks

A very nice place made even nicer, 2012-06-22
Captain: , Augusta (10)

The recent extensive renovations here provide more and better heads; a nice laundry facility and 2 private showers for marina members and guests.

Rob manages the docks and launch and is extremely helpful - just ask him for anything and he will try his best to help.

The only reason they don't get 5 stars is really nothing to do with them - their dock space is fairly small for the number of boats they have to deal with; but they are somewhat constricted on space, especially compared to the neighboring Portland Yacht Club.

You'll need transportation to get to the nearby Shaw's supermarket (1.8 miles); but there's plenty of stores and restaurants surorunding it - a couple of favorites for eat in or take out:
(1) Lotus - chinese/japanese - the dragon roll is awesome -
(2) Hugs - northern italian - everything is delicious, especially the pesto bread - you'll ask for more

the Falmouth Sea Grill at Handys has also been renovated; the menu is essentially the same, but the ambiance is much better - one downside is that we can't bring our dog into the new outdoor dining area as we could previously.

GREAT PLACE, 2012-04-09
Captain: , salem ma (379)

new facilites, clean showers, local restaurant, convenient laucnh schedule.

This is Heaven!, 2010-09-16
Captain: , Rockland, ME (90)

We feel like we've gone to Heaven! Pros: Maybe the friendliest marina staff we've ever met, an absolutely gorgeous location, excellent repair facilities, chandlery, restaurant & launch. Cons: Moorings are exposed to south winds, no shore heads, only a small convenience store within walking distance. Bottom Line: We'll probably sign up for a mooring here for the next summer season & call Handy "home."

good place to pick up a mooring, 2010-08-31
Captain: , New York, NY (200)

Friendly people with prompt launch service. Parking is an extra 10 bucks / day. Pretty good restaurant and bar right on premises.

A beautiful place to stop, 2010-02-23
Captain: , Castine, ME (58529)

We've stayed at Handy Boat twice over the years. They have always been helpful and friendly and have provided whatever we needed. If you're exploring Casco Bay, this is a wonderful place to pick up a mooring and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Since I'm from Maine myself, people often ask for suggestions about where to stay along the coastline. When they're looking for a place in Casco Bay, I always suggest Handy Boat.

Fuel dock a zoo., 2008-08-25
Captain: , Charleston, SC (215)

We did not get a mooring from Handy, used the YC, so can't comment there. However, the fuel dock management leaves a lot to be desired. Dock is crowded and not easy to access. We circled around for 20 minutes, service seemed slow -- left without ever getting fuel. Too bad since reading the other favorable reviews, maybe we hit them on a bad day. It was for us.

Only One Thing Missing, 2007-08-01
Captain: , Casco Bay, ME (8)

If they only had showers! Nice place, good helpful people. This is our first season using one of thier morrings and we give them 2 thumbs up. The bar and resturant are great but a bit pricey. Dock staff and launch drivers are to notch.

Nice Place, 2007-01-22
Captain: , Castine, Maine (2964)

We've stopped at Handy Boat several times on our way down or up the coast. Pretty spot, helpful staff, fair prices. Will stay there again.

Summers in the mooring field at Handy Boat Service, Falmouth ME, 2007-01-20
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (146)

We keep our boat on a mooring at Handy Boat during the summers, from about May 15 to October 15. We have enjoyed this for the past three summers and do not expect to change in the near future. We enjoy the reasonabley peaceful bay which is well protected from most weather. Most rolling in the field is the result of boats travelling north and south on the outside of the mooring field. Since the current flows north and south, as well, this can cause some rolling for smaller boats. Handy Boat attempts to put smaller boats closer to shore and further from the wakes of the passing traffic.

The mooring field is huge with several hundred boats. A great place if you like the view of other boats with the solitude of a mooring. Given the size, the launch service is very responsive. Usually we catch a launch within about 5 minutes of arriving at the dock and they usually pick us up from the boat in the length of time it takes to get to our boat from the dock (10-15 minutes). This is occaisionally much longer if we need a ride during the end of the day rush.

The moorings are 8 nm from Portland. We take our dinghy into Portland from time to time. The bay on the east side of Clapboard Island is a favorite race course for the day sailors.

Handy Boat Service is a family business of the Hallett family. They love the water and boating and we frequently see the family out on thier sailboats and trawler. The Halletts and all the employees go the extra mile to accomodate every request they can.
