Reviews for Hammond Marina
A great place to take a break, 2016-10-18
Captain: , Ft. Collins, CO (285)

We arrived with a malfunctioning auto pilot and a broken fresh water thank. The Marina referred us to Archie at Aero Marine Services, 708-935-5200, who we were told was a Ray Marine tech. He is a certified Ray Marine tech and he does many other repair type work on boats. He was able to get my auto pilot working and he fixed my rusted out fittings on the fresh water tank. His fees were reasonalble and he was prompt and always returned my calls.

The Marina has been very helpful with docking, accepting mail, and even taking us to the local Enterprse office. I will definitely stay here next time through.

Marina near Cal-Sag entrance , 2016-08-15
Captain: , Austin, TX (867)

2016 Our 2nd stay. Again we stayed for several days so we could work on the boat and also visit Chicago. We took Uber for $13.00 to the train station, Northern Indiana Transportation District Hammond Station., South shore Line Train. The senior fare to Chicago Millenium Station is $3.00. Walk 4 blocks to take the Architectural Boat Tour. 5 stars. The Sunday evening train schedule didn't work for us so we took Uber back to the Marina, $50. Try to get on S dock for quieter water inside Marina. S dock is also closer walk to the Marina parking lot and dog areas. It is a long walk to the Marina office. You an take your dinghy to it. Locked security gates.
2014 We stayed here several days. The marina is nice and people are friendly. Onsite laundry is very nice and only $ 1.00 a load. We used UBER to get a car to Wal Mart and also to go into Chicago. It is a good service. Casino is the only thing within walking distance.

Weeds in around fuel dock, 2016-08-09
Captain: , New Port Richey (310)

Got in during dark hours and when the sun peaked we where surrounded by weeds. Got fuel and got out.

Stayed a week, 2016-07-15
Captain: , Eagle (101)

Great place, professionally managed, extra clean facilities. Friendly slip mates, Good beaches close by for easy dinghy ride. Beyond the life guard area the beach is not clean so take a trash bag on your beach walk and pick up a can or 2. Fuel prices etc see the web site. http://hammondmarina.com, very dog freindly. If you need mechanical woork of any kind call Aero Marine Services 708-756-7847. They provided a terrific service.

I tried it for the summer and stayed the winter....., 2016-03-15
Captain: , Hammond Indiana (20)

Majority are good people who work there and who stay there. They use their boats for boating, not just to eat cheese and crackers on or weekend binges.

Facilities (showers and laundry) are clean. Fuel dock has good prices and pump out is strong.

Can get some foul smells when from the factories in the area when the wind comes from the south (I think it smells a little like India, my daughters think it smells like vomit).

They offer liveaboard service through the winter. They do a good job with preventing ice from surrounding the boat with harbor aeration and ice eaters.

Casino is very smokey, you have to walk through the smoking area to get to the non-smoking section. The buffet is decent. I haven't found any great restaurants in the area.

For the southern region of Lake Michigan, it has good prices and good facilities. It works.

Good stop, good Casino, 2015-09-25
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

Huge Marina, good fuel prices,$2.59/gal. Air conditioned clean bathrooms, plenty of dock carts. AAA taxi will take you to Midway Airport for $65 one way. Enterprise will pick you up and drop u off. Casino buffet is very good , big casino right at Marina. Walmart within one mile but really need a cab or car to get there due to busy roads and no sidewalks.

What a joke, 2015-09-04
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (266)

No wonder they are more than 50% empty. Only service at fuel dock is tie your line, you pump gas and you do pump out for a fee. The docks are not in the best of shape with goose poop and spider webs everywhere. They advertise Wifi but it is not working and won't be until some time next year.

Good place to fuel up near Chicago, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Burnham Harbor, Chicago (251)

We run down to Hammond to fuel up because Chcago prices are so high. It is an easy 30 minute run at 25-30 mph. Dock hands are always helpful at the fuel dock.

One time we got a transient slip and checked out the casino. It's Ceaser's highest grossing gaming floor! Casino's are not our thing so we got a tour -- very interesting and like all casinos, a bit sad.

Good fueling and staging marina before the Cal-Sag, 2015-08-27
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

On-site casino has ok buffet. Marina basin really needed grass remediation in late August visit. Much better fuel prices than Illinois immediately to the West.

Strong docks, nice rates, 2015-08-25
Captain: , Fort Worth, TX (450)

We really appreciated the strong docks, huge cleats, excellent power 50/30 amps, affordable rates, and proximaty to Cal-Sag entrance. Dockage is located at Horseshoe Casino. We planned on renting a car to do a lot of travel in this area. Enterprise car rental is handy here. Driving to downtown Chicago was approx. 15 minutes on weekends. Tollway is $4.50 and best route through southside of Chicago. Near marina is town of Whiting with a nice historic downtown. Everything you need, i.e., Walmart, fast food, pharmacy, hardware (excluding West Marine) is nearby via car or bicycle (I recommend car). It is 1/4 mile walk from dockage (main dock walkway) to land/parking lot and the marina office is an additional 1/4 mile. No problem if you are needing exercise and weather is not stormy. If you have health issues limiting your walking, I recommend staying elsewhere. No one available to catch our lines, they let us choose which slip to select on transient dock. Staff is friendly. Security is great with gate key card ($20 cash deposit required) and security car drives by in parking lot often. Access to parking lot is through a guarded gate at the yacht club connected to the marina. Plenty of trash recipticles every 40 yards along main dock, so no need to haul trash 1/4 mile. Deep water at transient dock. Restrooms and laundry are along main dock walkway, not a far walk. Dog astroturf potty area midway along main dock walkway and a narrow strip of grass is available along the parking lot.

Good stageing Marina to transit river system., 2015-08-22
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (2010)

Stayed here from Oct 8-13 2014. Got boat ready for trip to Florida down river system. Reasonable rates discounted for the end of year. Rates much better than high Chicago rates. Went to nearby Walmart to stock up on provisions for the trip but industrial area. Docks were in very good condition and staff was friendly. Washrooms & Facilities decent. Fuel prices better than Chicago high prices. Outside marina area not good neighborhood.

Great Stop, 2014-09-27
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1380)

Stayed here 5 nights 9--22-14 to 9-28-14. Call ahead before entering break water for staff to receive dock lines. Hats off to Keith Carey the Harbor master and his staff for his help while we were here. Office staff very pleasant and helpful. Receivied UPS while here. Rest Room head/showers up near head of "U" dock to left. Water at T-Head of "U" Dock 18 feet deep. Plenty of manuvering room. Slips have very high round steel 15 ft tall piling above water to divide slip. Not a problem like in Waukegan, IN. Also cleat on piling to tie off. Huge cleats on docks. Six X six wooden post 4-1/2 feet above dock, so set fenders after you tie up. Good Security. Guest Keys $20. ea cash deposit. and refundable. Don't miss fantastic Buffet at Horseshoe Casino next door. No problems with any odors in marina area. We enjoyed our stay and close proximity to CalSag Canal entrance. Capt Helen & Chief Engr Bob Onboard ALLEZ! MTOA, AGLCA, USPS, WRCC, USCG-ARC

Convenient for removing masts and preparing for rivers, 2014-09-06
Captain: , little current (272)

The Marina itself is good to great. Facilities are good and the staff are friendly and very helpful. We are isolated and rented a car to do some of the shopping and provisioning that needed to be done. Diesel fuel is $4.19 without any quantity discounts

Good marina for staging the river system, 2014-09-05
Captain: , Bay Point Marina, Marblehead, OH (180)

We stayed at Hammond and found them to be very accomodating. We were on x dock which is the farthest away from the office, acutally quite a hike! But we needed the exercise anyway! The marina is next door to the Horseshoe Casino which is a nice time with good food. The buffet restaurant is great and so is the Noodle restaurant. We left our boat there several days while we had to attend an out of state appointment. Very good security. We felt completely safe. The downside is it the railroad tracks kind of isolate you. The nearby town of Whiting is easy to get to by bike. Due to its proximity and isolation to shopping and restaurants, I have to rate this a 3 star.

Good stop - convenient , 2014-09-04
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1897)

Friendly staff in a marina that is very well located for the Calumet route when heading south.
Secret for getting downtown to Chicago is to call Uber $27 one way to Navy Pier versus $20 person via Casino Shuttle or $50 + via taxi
Explore downtown, try the boat architectural tour well worth it and then explore and then catch the casino shuttle back from the Sheraton or Hyatt for free.
24 hr security is also good.

Must stop for Larger vessels, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH (370)

Although the depth was not deep, this is a good stopfor those who have to go down the Calumet. It is 2 miles to the entry of the Calumet, and can put down the antennas and radar, etc to get ready for the rivers

Our last stop in Lake Michigan, 2013-09-19
Captain: , Castine, ME (59077)

This was a nice last stop before heading down the Cal-Sag. The Cal-Sag breakwater is just to the north of the marina making it very easy to enter in almost any weather.

We topped off with fuel here to avoid higher Illinois prices. With quantity discounts, the prices are pretty good.

All in all, it's a great place to take off down the rivers from.

Cheap and worth the price, 2013-09-03
Captain: , Muskegon, MI (138)

We came to Hammond hoping to get a serious amount of prep work done for our Loop trip. Instead we found unhelpful employees, a complete lack of wifi on the weekend (which caused us serious issues with our job responsibilities), and an area that feels very unsafe to walk in.

The marina itself is fine, but amenities are completely lacking and the area may be the Armpit of America.

Hammond Marina, 2013-09-01
Captain: , Boca raton (210)

A long walk off the dock to the buffet, but it was worth the walk.

Nice Stay Here, 2013-08-20
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

A large marina with easy access from the lake. Newer floating docks with excellent single serving bathroom/shower facilities at the end of each dock. Right next door to the casino.

Great stop, good facility., 2012-09-23
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

Marina was good, diesel was $3.89 on 9-24-11; adjacent to Harrahs and good restaurants.
Gary Miller Lady Barbara

Stayed again on 9-22-12 Diesel was 4.199, .10 discount for over 250 gal. Dock was $86 for 76' and power included.

Nice facility with a few notable drawbacks, 2012-09-13
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1777)

Called ahead to make a reservation, which at this time of year was not needed as the marina was half empty. The fuel dock is very long (and deep) with multiple service stations of gas and pump out. We use diesel and as our tanks were fuel I did not pay attention where the diesel pump is. "Sam" (female) that works the fuel dock is very nice and helpful. This is a large marina. The restrooms and showers are large and clean. (The toilets have built in macerators. Interesting.) Note that the marina is kind of divided in half by the long central dock where the restrooms and laundry are located. The south side, near the fuel dock, is large and spacious. The northside seems a bit more closed in. Im not sure the lady that answers the phone (not Sam) knows much about boats and boaters needs when making a reservation. Because of our boats makeup I requested a tee head in an open area. She was going to put us in a more congested area on the north side while the tee heads facing the fuel dock pool on the south side were empty. No prob in changing location. At this time there are no deck hands to help with lines. Sam was on her own. Huge sea walls provide excellent protection. Floating docks are in very good shape. Casino is attached to the marina. To leave the marina to go to the casino or elsewhere you have to go to the office and get a key card to get back into the marina which has a secruity fence. $20 deposit. Make sure to get your key during office hours which at this time of the year is cut down to 8:30am to 4pm. Excellent wifi even out here on the tee dock. View looking north to Chicago is cool.
Why not a 5-star? To be blunt with calm winds it kind of smells like an dirty alley behind a restaurant which makes sense as the marina is behind the casino. There is a Walmart nearby but in accessible - its the old joke punchline "You can't get there from here." The marina does have a convenience store with all the basics plus ice cream. Good deals on logoed clothing.
Big Plus - The dock fee is only $1 per foot and they give a twoferone special to Loopers.

Hammond Marina, 2012-09-08
Captain: , Britt, Ontario (691)

Good experience during our six day stay. The Harbourmaster gave us a lift (he wasn't busy that day), they lent us a drill, the resident boaters were really friendly! There isn't much nearby except the casino. We ate in the pub which was very good.

Cheap but nasty, 2012-09-06
Captain: , New Zealand (1087)

We stayed there for 8 days while waiting for parts from Amazon. They had a 2 nights for 1 deal which sounded good, but you got what you paid for. The security staff were great, the Port staff were appalingly unhelpful. Transients are put on a dock 1250 ft from the car park and you get severely admonished for riding a bike on the dock, even though nothing says you can't. I would give it no stars if the review would allow. Avoid.

Hammond Marina, 2012-04-05
Captain: , indiana (331)

Nice marina with good facilities. A long walk down the main pier. Can get rough in the entrance.

Great facilities, 2011-09-25
Captain: , Portage In (70)

Nice floating docks, well run and great food nearby at casino

Hammond Marina, 2010-09-17
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Nice marina with floating docks. It is quite large. There is a casino in the marina but not much else in walking distance.

Good place to pull the mast if you are a sailboat heading for the river system.

Great marina with sluggish staff (cooler weather) ??, 2010-09-16
Captain: , baltimore md (644)

We called one day ahead from St. Joe,Mi. After we remembered the time change they cheerfully answered the phone and gave us a slip assignment at 8:30 am. There were many open slips in this well protected harbor. Fuel was $2.99 and dockage was $45.00 for a 40' boat on Sept 10, 2010. The Horseshoe casino is huge with a very popular buffet on Fri. There is a good grocery and hardware store across the tracks and straight down Calumet st. We really enjoyed the Hammond Yacht club. Kate the bartender and the members were great. Good food too!

Good stop before heading S to IL., 2010-08-16
Captain: , Foley, AL (985)

Inexpensive marina near Chicago. Nice place to top off your fuel tanks and buy groceries before heading south on the Illinois river. Was nice having the laundry and restroom/showers on the docks. WiFi for the docks s supposed to be installed in the next 2 weeks. This is a busy marina on the week ends but a friendly boater community. We would come back.

Fleet Cruise Destination, 2010-02-25
Captain: , Chicago, IL, USA (836)

Our yacht club had its fleet cruise to Hammond. The management went out of their way to make sure we were treated well. Ice cream on the patio overlooking the harbor on a nice summer evening, what more can be said? Casino nice diversion and has great steak restaurant and bar with distant Chicago skyline for backdrop.
