Reviews for Green Cove Springs Marina
The Break-In%u2019s are History, 2017-05-12
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (10)

There have been numerous reports here about stored boats being broken into at Green Cove Springs Marina. Here%u2019s the straight scoop on that:

The good ketch, Silverheels, and I have been using this yard as our U.S. home base for over 10 years when we%u2019re not in the West Indies. I have summer-stored my boat in dry-dock here several times, without incident. In 2015, a number of boats in the long-term storage yards were broken into and robbed. Since this marina%u2019s contract, like most, requires boat owners to provide their own insurance coverage, the marina was unable to reimburse the affected owners. I don%u2019t blame them for being upset %u2013 I sure would%u2019ve been! %u2013 but they did sign the contract, so the responsibility for insurance was theirs. As for the stealing, when it was discovered, the marina installed stadium lighting in the several fenced and locked storage yards, and the local police stepped up their surveillance with the result that the thieves, 4 of them, were caught and arrested. There have been no break-ins since then. My personal experience is that I have never needed to lock my boat while staying here. It really is one of the safest ports anywhere. And oh, and BTW, about the %u201Cgrubby restrooms%u201D someone mentioned, the marina has recently built a beautiful new laundry and shower facility.

Green Cove Springs Marina is an uncommonly safe, friendly, working boat yard especially suited to do-it-yourself cruising sailors on a budget and boat owners seeking the most affordable long-term dry-dock storage. I believe their rates are the lowest in the region and an excellent value. If you come expecting all that, you will not be disappointed. -- Tor Pinney, s/v Silverheels

Winches stolen when we left our boat 2015/2016. Management didn't seem interested and no apology was given. Poor facilities, grubby restrooms. Would not recommend this boatyard

Great DIY and a used boat supply store on site!, 2016-07-08
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (20)

Monkeyfist marine is the best thing about this yard. You can get used boat parts at a very reasonable price. If you don't like the price, make them an offer. They actually part out boats on site and sell them in the store. Bought an electrical panel off a boat they were parting out before it ever got on the shelf. Most organized used parts store I've ever seen.

Deliverred a boat there, 2016-06-08
Captain: , Montreal (717)

Good services. A few mooring to hook the boat, waiting for an haul out.
Better double check the agenda, because we would have been late, there was no more haul out for the next 2 weeks...

Just our own experience, 2016-04-15
Captain: , wensleydale (940)

We heard all about the break-ins and the marina's refusal to take any responsibility or even discuss the issue; if ours had been one of those effected, I'm sure we too would've been giving one star. But having been left alone by the thieves, we found the staff and facility to be first class for a livaboard/DIY boatyard. Showers aren't the most fancy/modern/prolific, but they were always clean, the staff were invariably helpful and their parts ordering/delivery service proved excellent - my biggest regret is having bought so much of the stuff we needed at far higher prices, enroute to GCS. Our only 'complaint' was that the spot we were allocated had very recently been re-hardcored and could/should've been better compacted and perhaps topped with some fine-material before parking boats on there; it was very uneven underfoot and the boat moved slightly in the cradles one night during some exceptionally heavy rain. I think that I'd probably take the risk and store there again, but I know that if it was just a haulout to work on the boat that I needed, then I'd definitely be back.

Rates not same for everyone, 2016-01-24
Captain: , Whitehall, M (228)

If you have been there long enough you can tell certain boats are not being charged the same rates. It's not a fair place. Workers are great and friendly. Lax on security. Can tell things have changed and not for the good.

BOATERS BEWARE - dozens of break-ins discovered so far!, 2015-12-09
Captain: , Annapolis (451)

You can see the damage to our boat and many details on our blog at In addition to thefts, boats broken into have had hatches left open and the resulting toxic mold and standing water above the cabin sole is horrific.

theft in storage yard, 2015-11-05
Captain: , sailing (10)

Our boat along with several others were broken into and robbed over this past summer. If your boat is in "Canada" storage yard, you had better go check it. No security in yard. No cameras. Will not use this facility for storage again.

Traveling Sailor, 2015-09-21
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (10)

Boaters beware. Its cost me 30K to fix my boat after leaving it her for a few months. It was blocked bow down and had 12 inches of water inside when I returned. I was told it was my fault for leaving the boat for longer than originally planned. I was paying for the storage on time and in full. I still have yet to get back on the water. Thanks GCSM!

A Real Marina for Sailors, 2015-04-11
Captain: , Green Cove Springs (52)

Have kept my boat here for a number of years now and would recommend it to any DIY sailor. The crew are nice people, dependable, and honest. This is a place where you can work on your boat with no hassles at a reasonable price. They do a great job of blocking and storage. There is room for literally hundreds of boats here and you'll see just about every kind of sailboat imaginable. New showers and laundry this year. The location is up on the St. John's River, about 25 miles south of Jacksonville. It's a bit of a trip to junction of the ICW or the Class A ocean inlet but not bad. Have done it multiple times with no problem.

The cruisers boatyard, 2015-01-16
Captain: , Palmetto, FL (504)

This is the place to work on your boat. There are enough liveaboards here to keep the place secure and they won't reach for your wallet every time you need something. VERY professional when hauling your boat! This place was 2 days out of our way but well worth it!

Here's a qualified assessment, 2014-12-10
Captain: , Jacksonville Florida (417)

I had to store the boat in the yard for over a year. Small town area with great humane people. I then put the boat into the self work yard, put in a new motor, new standing rigging, painted the mast and booms, and a bottom job. The people there helped with lots of spot-on advice, I saw where they kept other's from 'getting into trouble' with what they were attempting, I was able to get anything and everything I needed. Most of the common things are there on site. I got a chance to meet everyone from the mechanics, to the guys who move the boats, to the office staff, to the owner/director. They're sailboat cruiser oriented and really want to help. I was there for Thanksgivings Day too and what a cool international community. We had a blast. I live in Jacksonville Fl, and there's other yards in the area, and I've spent some time in them, and I will absolutely go back to Green Cove Springs Marina again and again. It's not 'pretty', but it's a working yard, not a country club. The MonkeyFist Marine had lots of used boat parts, Coats Machine Shop knows how to do boat parts. I highly recommend this place for anyone needing to do work on their boat, need a place to be based out of when cruising Florida and the Bahamas, or need a place to just store your boat out of the water. Way to go everyone!!!

Good for a couple nights, 2014-11-11
Captain: , Ft. Collins, CO (331)

We stopped here on the way up river. Dock is a fixed concrete nayy pier from WWII. 30 amp service and water. If you have a 50 amp boat you will need a 50' 30amp cord to get the second 30amp leg to your splitter. Staff was friendly and lots of yard work going on when we were there. Three miles or so by bike to town where we found a delightful coffee shop. Springs perks. I would stop again here just for a latte. Lots of Canadians here preparing to head south and to the Bahamas.

great DIY yard, 2014-08-25
Captain: , ponte vedra, florida (30)

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They also have a great supply of commonly needed supplies at very fair prices. If they do not have what you need, most everything can be delivered the next day.

Additionally, it is worth a look going through the "Monkey's Fist" inventory of new and mostly used sailboat items. Their store is onsite. I found some old bronze hatch hinges that I had been looking for...

Awesome community, 2014-05-19
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, Florida (10)

I am in my second month of working on my boat getting ready to launch. The people here are great. The prices are very reasonable and the staff goes out of their way to help. Though not convenient to marine stores, the staff can get you anything you need in a couple of days or you can order it online and have it delivered to the office. There is currently a great music session on Saturday nights at the porch...Be careful on approach as there is an obstruction in the water right at the pier (on the North side) further out on the river. There is no reason to be right there but I wouldn't want to run into it.

Cheaper ! May not be better, 2014-05-01
Captain: , Greenwich Ct. (50)

Be careful. You may get what you pay for.

Very friendly and affordable, 2014-04-23
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (100)

GCSM is the place to go if you need to haul out for longer time to do the repairs. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The office mgr Crystal is running this business very efficiently. While in water, you can stay on the moorings, or even you can anchor between long docks. Pier 11 is not in good shape and I would not recommend staying long term on it. It is condemned. Marina finally added a new showers and bathrooms. We will be back.

Fantastic DIY yard!, 2013-12-15
Captain: , Mayport Florida (452)

Can't say enough about the friendly/knowledgable staff. Owner Bob runs a great boatyard. They really take exceptional care of your boat while she's in the slings getting hauled/launched. Prices for all services offered can't be beat. Best part, there's nothing they won't let you do in terms of working on your boat. If your looking to have your bottom redone, there's no one better at a reasonable price than "bottom Dave" who lives on sight.

Best staff anywhere, 2013-11-23
Captain: , Bradley Beach,NJ (20)

Great people to deal with. The staff makes you feel like you have known them for years. Rates are very reasonable. They are building more shower facilities and should be done soon. We love it here.

Great DIY Yard, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, Florida (10)

I have my boat here and the service is prompt but low key. The employees are very helpful and friendly.

DIY Place to Go, 2013-09-04
Captain: , Mayport, FL, USA (317)

One star off for less than superior heads and showers. Otherwise, an excellent choice for diy projects (bring your own tools and materials) and subcontracted services from on-site independent contractors.

Great people, great prices. Excellent work and great care of each boat when hauling, power washing, blocking, launching.

As a marina, it's full and no transient slips available. You may be able to get a short term mooring, maybe, but be sure to call ahead. Best to consider it a diy boatyard and forget the marina part. For diy work it's hard to beat.

Not close to amenities (hike to River bend Golf), gear, repair parts or provisioning. Plan ahead.

Worst Marina I've Ever Encountered, 2013-08-13
Captain: , florida (230)

I brought my boat to GCSM to haul and store my boat after calling them and being assured they had the capacity to haul it. 46' trawler, 15' beam, and 50,000 pounds. I was there on my boat for three days before leaving for New York. I paid for hauling, cleaning, and blocking, plus three months storage in advance. We were almost in NC when I got a call that they couldn't haul it after all. They promised to have it hauled ASAP at another marina. This took two months to do. Requests for a refund of hauling and storage fees were ignored.

Without a doubt, this is the worst marina I have ever dealt with.

great spot, 2013-04-15
Captain: , Midland ON (55)

Been there 2 years-did time in the work yard and at dock. Staff is the best I've encountered, helpful and lots of advice. Bathrooms could stand a little TLC-like another . dock is great for loading and unloading.

Best value for DIY boatyard, 2013-02-15
Captain: , Palm Coast, Florida (785)

I spent about three weeks in the work yard area replacing speed and depth sounder through hulls along with the bottom paint and other routine maintenance. Yard workers are great and office staff very helpful. I will be back.

Friendly yard people, low prices but air is dirty and washrooms poor, 2013-02-14
Captain: , titusville fl (62)

Great people at the yard friendly, helpful- and they treat your boat like its thier own but the air is loaded with bottom paint dust ( no vacuum requirement) and pollen - very hard on the allergies. There is only 1 mens toilet and 2 ladies toilets for 50? boats - and 2 johnny on the spots (beautiful). The mens shower stall has mildew and several missing tiles on the floor. Apparently they have been promising new washrooms for several years.

Great Place to Store on the Hard, 2013-01-15
Captain: , Beeville (90)

Regretably I have to work in between cruises. But this place makes it a lot easier. Even the mild weather helps. My boat suffered during the long, wet, icy winters on the Chesapeake, but does fine here.

The staff is so helpful and friendly. The rates are so reasonable that I can call ahead and arrange a launch for a two week vacation sail. Then I can put her back on the hard without breaking the bank.

I'm not much on DIY so I can't comment knowledgebly here. There is not a lot of yachting infrastructure around, but UPS and FedEx arrive everyday and everyone seems happy.

Great place for the budget minded, like me.

Great Place to work on boat, 2013-01-14
Captain: , Newport Oregon (260)

We just spent 6 weeks here refurbishing our Catamaran. this is a great place for people who like to do work themselves. It was also very low cost. If you stay here Enterprise has a 9.99 special on the weekends and will come get you/drop you off. Cant say enough about this place.

Last of a dying breed, 2012-12-23
Captain: , Palm Beach, FL (48)

Fancy? No! But, if you are looking for a yard to work on your own boat without being nickle and dimed, this is the place. I have kept my boat on the hard here for several years when we aren't cruising, and all in all it has been great. The haul-out and storage rates are VERY reasonable, the staff is friendly and helpful and the sense of camradery is pleasant. They also have several folks who can provide about any service you need (or don't feel like doing!) from fiberglass and paint work to engine servicing and shaft alignment. Additionally, as the marina is 20nm inland from the Atlantic, the area is pretty well protected from hurricanes.

My Experience at Green Cove Springs City Dock as posted on Cruiser' and Active Captain, 2012-11-11
Captain: , Green Cove Springa,Fl. (20)

Cruising News:
Chief of police in Green Cove Springs,Fl. and his officers are demanding 10.00 daily dock fee for dinghy or boat if they think you are a live aboard even though signs are posted for overnight and utility usage only. Today I complained to city manager and am awaiting news of actual statute or %u201Cresolution%u201D pertaining to this now old shakedown tactic for money that is not posted on any sign at the dock. It happens that the police station is in Spring Park right near the docks so they keep an eye out for potential %u201Cvictims%u201D. Beware%u2026
Alan Hoskins

It seems that I am caught up in a discriminatory battle between the city of Green Cove Springs and it%u2019s corporate statute enforcers and the live a boards who have remained at anchor off the city in the St. Johns River in the quaint cove to the south of the city public docks for a period deemed %u201Cto long%u201D by the powers that claim to be. I have been denied use of a public dock for the reason stated above unless I pay a fee that is not required by the general public and that is designed to force me to comply or leave the area which feels and seems to be the case. This is clearly a case of the NIMBY syndrome (not in my backyard) that is causing Fl. to enforce statutes that are not even on the books. We as a species are de evolving not evolving and are acting as territorial baboons fighting for existence! Folks when you buy a box on the waterfront and hook it up to the grid and dull your mind in front of the boob tube, try to remember that you only bought the box, you did not buy the view out of your window because I am in it and I am not for sale! Best Regards%u2026../)%u2026%u2026

Rustic but a great place to work/store boat, 2012-10-21
Captain: , Kingston, Ontario (1970)

Definately a cruisers' haven, very friendly staff, very flexible, will order parts/supplies for you. Can do work yourself or lots or resourses for hire. St Augustine close (sailor exchange, sailmaker, dingy repair) and canvas lady on site. Only down side is provisioning is outside walking distance.

Great ship yard, 2012-04-22
Captain: , Dover DE (228)

Professional personnel and excellent service from all. Highly recommend this yard if you want to do your own work or have something repaired/replaced. "Bottom Dave" is excellent at fiberglass and bottom preservation.

Wonderful place, 2011-12-17
Captain: , Quebec (106)

We stayed here working on Odyssey IV for over 2 months, people with loads of experience and helpful hints. Very friendly. We will be back in the Spring. Only downside is the limited amount of toilets for the amount of people on site, so you wait in line and chat with the locals.. :-)

Good Find for Wayward and Busted., 2011-08-19
Captain: , LaBelle (95)

Funny staff. Lots of heads to put together in times of troubleshooting. Put our boat on the hard here for a very reasonable price. We're Looking forward to staying and working there in the autumn. Coffee all day and night for donation.

Boatyard and Marina, 2011-06-02
Captain: , Newark, DE (250)

So this is where many months of looking for a bigger boat landed me. What a gem! I'm in favor of a place with the feel of real water living. This place has it! Scalywags out the wazoo and docks that show their age of being on the water. I had a mooring, but could pull up to the dock at any time to freshen up the batteries and fill the water tanks. The staff is very friendly and helped with all of my issues of outfiitting my boat for a long cruise. There are plenty of people on shore to help with whatever issues you have. That help is very experienced and comes at a price. An extremely reasonable price! From excellent rates on canvas work to a couple glasses of scotch while helping you go over your engine!

As far as a waterfront community goes, this is the place to live an authentic watermen's way. You are a bit removed from shopping and supplies, but a ride is easily obtainable or a cab is just a phone call away. I rented a car from the airport an did lots of driving and exploring. When I returned the car I took a cab back. The cabbie charged me the fare and gave me my tip back. We had talked about life and boats the whole ride back and he just wanted to see my boat! That's just one of many examples of how down to earth the people are in this area.

I stayed for a 6 weeks fitting out the boat and didn't have one bad experience or dealings. The only thing is for those that like to watch football at a bar, most of them are closed on Sunday. There is a biker bar that is open with football on one big tv, it's called Rehab. A new owner at the time made me, a sailing/surfing bum feel right at home and even put on my game!
