Reviews for Gilberts Resort Marina
Communication, communication, communication, 2016-06-27
Captain: , Edgewood, RI (117)

Agree with previous posts but wish to expand on communcation. Relied on circling while trying to identify dockhand in midst of many guests on dock in front of hotel. He later claimed to have a radio but hotel desk explained it is a walkie talkie for internal communication. My crew was welcomed to the complimentary breakfast. Once we committed, we learned that complimentary is only for hotel guests. Boaters are charged about $11/person.

Captain: , Sheboygan, WI (70)

Pulled in at 2pm, wall was full was told to wait until there was a spot. Floated around for 30 mins till there was a spot. Old wooded dock, the power pedestal farthest north has a 50A hook up. Live music and restaurant was ok but pricey...

Rocky all day but wakes settle down at night, questionable People walking around on the dock all night until 4am, not great sleep.

No other options..

Stopped for Lunch, 2016-03-11
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL. (90)

We stopped on our way back to Miami for lunch. Easy in and out on the long dock running along the ICW. Facilities are a little run down however, the tiki bar and restaurant were very relaxing and had live music. Gas dock staff were helpful in getting docked.

Rustic, No BOATUS Discount, 2016-01-14
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (173)

Really nice people. One of the bathrooms was out of service, the working one was ok, not great, and by necessity unisex. NO LONGER GIVES A BOATUS DISCOUNT so it is $2.50 per foot, plus tax, plus $8.25 for 30A power. Docks are a little worn, wooden, and fixed. Tide was minimal although current was a little strong when we docked. Docks are open to public to walk since hotel / bar (which closes around 9pm during the week, but servers will stay if you're still eating/drinking) is adjacent, but they have nighttime security and are relatively isolated due to location just off US1. Dockhand / Dockmaster "JJ" caught lines and was a very nice guy. One of the 30A receptacles on pedestal 13 looked burnt or otherwise damaged. Wifi was ok but unsecured. Apparently, the resort is under new ownership in the last year, after being owned for 35 years by a German gentleman. The maintenance seems to still be lagging behind though. Resort grounds are nice and have a decidedly Florida Keys vibe. Diesel was $3.29/gallon, so high, considering highway diesel is $2.19 at the moment. The odd thing is they have never heard of Active Captain here?

Good protection with great tiki bar, 2015-10-18
Captain: , Tempe, AZ (210)

Hotel rooms were being rebuilt. Dock staff were great...even pumped up my fender. Nice beach area where you can put your feet in the water and have a cocktail.

Location, location, location, 2015-10-08
Captain: , currently Plantation Yacht Harbor, Islamorada, Fla. Keys (4407)

Being virtually the only game in town, Gilberts was a welcome sight on our southbound trip in October 2015. We departed Ft. Lauderdale and ran outside to Miami, then down the ICW. All of the trip was with strong west-southwest winds creating a heavy chop. Arriving at Gilberts - they don't take reservations - to find an open space on the long dock along the ICW was a relief. However, there was no 50 amp service anlong that dock. Despite not being able to use the electric, there was no discount on the price. The tiki bar served good, but pricey bar food - the cheeseburgers were especially good. Live music was lound, but on a Sunday, it ended at sundown. Dock was in fairly good shape save the electrical service. The dockmaster "Alabama" was nice, but not knowledgable. Would not recommend Gilberts as a destination, but as an overnight stop it served the purpose. Would have been rated higher if had 50 amp service.

Hard to Contact, 2015-03-14
Captain: , Peterborough ON (62)

No VHF radio for at least the past year, according to the dockmaster, and he doesn't know when/if they will re-install. His phone not working today. Hotel staff couldn't direct us in. Had to find the fuel dock (not hard as it happens) and hail him by voice. Not impressed. No pumpout, water is $10.

Good stopping point, 2015-03-06
Captain: , Stuart, fl (40)

Very good place to stop and rest because it has food, pool, showers and fuel. If you need fuel this is the cheapest place and is not out of the way. Would rate 5 starts if it wasn't run down. Still serves it's purpose with very friendly people.

Good attitude, 2015-01-30
Captain: , Harveys Lake, PA (100)

Rolled in here after crossing the bay from Miami. Tired and worn but was welcomed at the dock by "skeeter" with a smile and a welcome. Great bar and great rest. Gas prices were outrages but maybe they had a reason?

Overpriced everything. - RIP OFF, 2015-01-17
Captain: , Key Largo (392)

Convenient locsation. but this can be a really busy spot. Beware of strong and changable tidal currents. They don't really monitor the VHF but seem to pay attention at the docks. Staff always friendly and accomodating

No discounts honored last time we were there and grossly overcharging for fuel.. RIP OFF RATES

Unfriendly and Expensive, 2014-03-14
Captain: , Fort Collins, CO (41)

This marina might be convenient for fueling but they don't care to give you the time of day and charge $5.00 per gallon of diesel. I sat at the fuel dock waiting and finally found someone behind the bar, looking right at the boat and saying he did not see us come in. They are also well-known fior not monitoring the radio. No one helps to catch lines or to cast off your vessel. Unlike anywhere else I have every bought fuel would not go back unless I had to.

Rustic short stop, 2014-01-27
Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Large TIKI bar- hopping place for locals, both by land and bt sea. Face dock on ICW for transients- was calm. Toilets/showers weren't much. Did use laundry facilities-ok. Pool, beach- wonderful sunset at beach. If on ICW is very conveneient. Not conveneinet to Islamarada. Had the old-style keys look. OK for a short stay.

OK for a Short Stay, 2014-01-08
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (250)

Face dock right on ICW, but surprisingly little wake. Pricey. Fixed dock is old, bathrooms are old and need cleaning, but you don't come to Gilbert's for the bathrooms. Tiki Bar has live music on Sunday afternoon (when we were there), lots of locals, definitely has a "Keys" feel to it. Was glad we got a chance to stay, and glad when we left.

A hopping place, 2014-01-04
Captain: , Lizella GA (1414)

This is a very popular place, especially on weekends. It is one of the few places that fuel is available in the area. Dock staff were fast and helpful. Great bar, music, beach and folks were having tons of fun. Anchorage is at end of point and easy to dingy in from.

Old Keys Lots of character, 2013-11-15
Captain: , Miami (100)

Decent food, helpful people, fuel prices on the high side but if you are going North or South on the bay side it's on your way. It saves you a deviation which will cost you time and money. If you want to dock ask for a transient slip on the channel rather than in the main marina.

Best Burgers, 2013-04-26
Captain: , Cape Coral (120)

The burgers on fresh Kaiser rolls were awesome. Transient dock is right next to Tiki Bar. Dockmaster very helpful, even picked up some groceries for us when he went to store. Old funky place popular with the locals boat bums.

NICE can be crowded, a must stop., 2013-02-27
Captain: , Key Largo, FL (114)

Great Food, but a bit pricey with kinda poor service, cold beer and full liquor bar with TVs. Entertainment nightly. Can be very crowded on holidays and weekends. Worlds largest Tikihut outdoor bar restraunt, indoor dining also. Pets are welsome on a leash. Fuel dock. Currents can be swift at channel side transient dock, have lines ready for attendant who is usually ready on approach. Transient dockage and boat ramp available, hotel.

Very large tiki bar with live music, 2013-02-22
Captain: , NORTH EAST, MD (125)

We stayed one night on our way to KW. Our "slip" was at the fuel dock, right next to the bar and the channel on the other side. Ceasar, the dockmaster, was very helpful and friendly. The restroom/showers were adequate, not the cleanest or best of shape. Paid $5.20 a gallon for gas, the most we paid anywhere in the keys. The tiki bar was very nice and the live music was good. There is a small breakfast cafe next to the hotel office, which served up a nice breakfast at a very reasonable price. We did stay in a room at the hotel, which was very dated and the beds were horrible. Would have been a $29.95 hotel back home, but due to the location was $130.00. Should have stayed on my boat.

Nice place to hang out, 2013-02-04
Captain: , Key Largo (254)

Fun area to just sit and relax. Live music and good drinks and food make it a good place to stay. Also, if you do not want to pay, you can anchor nearby and sit on your boat and drink while listening to the music.

Our fave Leaky Tiki, 2012-12-26
Captain: , Ocean Springs MS (1032)

This is the last of the Leaky Tiki joints in the Keys. No, it's not fancy. And their bathrooms aren't sparkling. But the food is good and the drinks well made, and the company excellent. And given that it's in the Keys, the prices aren't bad. We launch our F27 trimaran here and there's trailer storage available. We've stayed in the hotel and found it clean. The place is old and it shows, but that's what makes it kewl.

Update 12/2012: hut rebuilt, we have power at dock included in price 2.5/ft. The food is still damn good, and brooms are cleaner than last time. We'll keep coming back....

Great People, 2012-07-01
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

The facilities/price do rate three stars, but the staff rate 5. Fuel is high too. We needed help and they provided it. Coming back, we will stay here. Neat place to eat and tiki bar. Georgeann and Robert are tops. Dock hand too. Pool was nice.

Captain: , marathon, fl (701)

this marina has really fallen to disrepair. the bathrooms were horrible.
the staff was polite but not very concerned. the rate was market value at $2/ft. wouldn't do it again because of the bathrooms.
nice tiki bar though.

German night in the restaurant, 2012-06-06
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (322)

If you like German food and lots of it, stop here on German night. The amount and quality of the food was great, also Fish Fri-days are another great tradition here. and its local fish not tilapia or farm raised catfish like some others palm off on you.

Funky old Florida Keys, 2012-04-30
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (250)

A new, larger Tiki Bar is being built while the current Tiki is being used for live music, cold drinks and mediocre food. Docks are in disrepair. There are only two power posts on the face dock. Each post has two 30a connections- no water or cable. If you are not looking for a high end resort, then this an ok stop.

gilberts resort and marina, 2012-03-14
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale FL (167)

the motel needs to be torn down and rebuilt. The tiki bar and resturant are good. Marina facilities are in need of repair.

Disappointing, 2012-01-18
Captain: , Jordan Creek, NC (40)

Seemed like a fun place to stop as we headed down the ICW. There was a band playing and lots of outdoor seating under umbrellas. However, for what they offer at the dock, $2.50 seemed way too high. No power was available because "they are working on rebuilding the large tiki hut." Really? The bathrooms could only be described as filthy, and the one dryer at the laundry was broken. We were given a reduced rate of $2.00 for the night but moved off to anchor the next night. Maybe things will improve when the construction is complete. They did tell us we could stay at the dock all day if we wished for free. The charge is only for overnight. Anchoring was a bit challenging as well since the depth was actually much less than charted.

The tiki hut fell down !, 2011-12-27
Captain: , jackson, TN (884)

We passed by this year after many stays at Gilberts. It was overpriced at $2.00/ foot and is now more. As we cruised by we noticed parts of the Tiki Hut bar/rest. had literally fallen down. Beams are up for a new roof, but no sign of work going on. Rates have risen from $2.00/' to $2.50 (per phone call on 12-27-11) or $3.00 in another review. This is an eclectic, funky, old Florida dump. Other say the docks were to be replaced, but as we crusied by 15' off they looked like the same rickety mess we've stayed at many times. The paint from the 50's is what holds the place togehter. We understand from folks who were there last week that the heads remain marginal at best and the pool isn't exactly clean. But the food and drinks are still good as is the band on Sunday. Our days at Gilberts are over.

Fun stop for an evening, 2011-12-13
Captain: , Bonita Springs (484)

Good music in the evenings. Watch the current at the face dock. Some of the boats for lunch had a problem by not paying attention and we got to watch some bumper boats.

Fun place to spend a night or two., 2011-11-05
Captain: , Daytona Beach, FL (533)

Stayed here a few nights on the way north. Nice outdoor restaurant, The place is a bit old, but still fun to visit.

great place to hangout, 2011-10-26
Captain: , St Augustine Fl (41)

Great place to hangout drink a cold beverage or two and enjoy the wonderful tropical atmosphere. This place known for locals as well as those traveling thought.. Is a great place for dinner or to go swimming and enjoy the sun.

Only downside is 3 dollars per foot is kind of pricey for the docking accommodations.

Funky Florida Keys Tiki Bar and Docks at its finest!, 2011-04-20
Captain: , St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (404)

If you're not looking for the Ritz 5-Star resort, and if you really want to enjoy the Florida Keys like a native in the good ol' days, then Gilberts is for you. The pool ain't great but it's fresh water and refreshing. The bathrooms and showers are worn out but functional. The docks are rickety old splintery wood but they do the job. If you're looking for perfect docks and facilities, then go elsewhere, but if you're looking for a fun, funky tiki bar with great food and drinks and a fantastic Sunday afternoon dance party with live rock and roll band then this is for you. This is THEE destination for Sunday afternoon Harley bike riders and all upper Keys locals. We love it and plan all our Key's trips so that we stop at Gilberts on Sunday!

Not Good..., 2011-02-10
Captain: , Key Largo (80)

The only good thing here is the music on the weekend.
The rooms are not very clean. I stayed 1 night only. Glad
to leave.

A taste of what.s left of Old Key Largo !, 2011-02-08
Captain: , Key Largo (5304)

Locals tiki bar, bands, good drinks, decent food, dirty showers and heads (bar uses them) dockage out front and back. Expensive fuel and dockage, as in all the keys.

Very Nice Stop Over, 2010-12-27
Captain: , escanaba, mi (283)

Stopped on a Sunday afternoon and decided to spend the night. The bands start at 1 PM and were done by 6. The bars and the food were very good and a great atmosphere The showers by the fuel dock were nice and at 2 bucks the girls were in heaven. Dropped the hook for the night and tied up at the dock in the morning for breakfast. That was a problem, didn't start serving till 11 AM. We will be back.

Great Stay, 2010-09-14
Captain: , Key Largo (11)

Face Dock along ICW is brand new and in very good shape. Showers could use a paint job. Overall very nice.

Gilbert's - A taste of the keys, 2010-03-18
Captain: , Summerland Key, Florida (188)

A late afternoon lunch and a few beers listening to the local talent under the grass roof was just what we had in mind. They didn't really have space for us (in our 41ft Catamaran), so they squeezed some of the other boats at the dock, and made enough room to park us right in front of the gas dock.. They only asked that we leave as early as possible the next morning so they could get back to selling fuel. Pretty nice, I thought.

Won't sure a space for you, 2009-08-17
Captain: , Knoxville, TN (1788)

We contacted Gilbert's the day before and the morning we were arriving in Key Largo for dockage of our 46' yacht for one night. They told us, since it was Sunday, they could not guarantee they would have space for us. Lots of small day boats (who use the restaurant, but do not pay for dockage) come in to listen to music at the restaurant, and they could not guarantee, at 2pm, there would be space for us to stay over night. The area where they have slips is too shallow for our 5' draft, so the face wall was the only place to go. They told us we could anchor our for the afternoon until the day boats left, then we could come over to the face wall. With storms coming, that was not an option we liked. We called Anchorage Resort across the way and they were VERY accomodating to have a slip waiting fo rus. Their amenities were great (see that review!).

Original Key funky place, 2009-05-06
Captain: , Vancouver BC (500)

Great fun stop on the ICW, good food and fun. Great rickity docks !!

cheap(ish) but run down, 2008-01-18
Captain: , Tampa, Fl (27)

the owners, its seems, have ideas about building condos here, so they are not maintaining the property. docks are ok, but in poor shape. heads/showers are gross. stayed on a friday night, local bar crowd is loud.
