Reviews for Georgetown Yacht Basin, Inc
Don't believe cruising guides, 2016-10-08
Captain: , Salem Ma (430)

We got a mooring for $0.85/ft (I never understand this by the ft mooring pricing thing)

We came up the long 8 miles of river to hide from Hurrican Matthrew. The location is very well protected and the facilities are good.If was after season and the store had mostly scraps. They have a free van and we took it 15 minutes away to Middleton where there is a super walmart etc. The lovasl town of Galena is like a mile walk along a dangerous road. It has a small market, liquor store etc. Far as Georgetown itself, there isn't really a town at all. There is just marinias and a cpuple of resturants and a marine store (but it does have a Post Office)

Ther are lots side anchor spots along the river if you are coming for weather related stop.

The Granry resturant was good.

Worth the miles up the beautiful river to get here. Courtesy van, facilities, and folks are great. We entered on an extremely busy weekend, boats all over the place fueling up/docking, etc, and they had planty of staff to handle it all.

Early in season.., 2016-05-07
Captain: , Marathon, FL (366)

We stayed here for 2 nights sitting out bad weather. It seemed like we were very early in the season (May 7th) as the dockmaster had just started working for them (his first day) and everything seemed up in the air. For example, when we checked in, they were not even sure what to charge us for the transient slip. I was told $1.50 / ft when I called to make the reservation but they ended up charging me $1.25 / ft.

The moorings are very nice and protected but the most expensive we've seen anywhere. They are $.80 / ft which would make them $34.40 per night for our 43 foot sailboat. There are many moorings and only 3 or 4 were occupied.

Georgetown is a nice but small place. We walked over to the Granery Restaurant (about 1 mile) and the food was good and resaonably priced.

This was a review I did for Georgetown Yacht Basin 2014-09-01 and was sent to Gregg neck Boat yard by mistake. Sorry Gregg Neck.

Price for haul out was $25.00 per foot while other Marina's are charging $8.00 per foot. Aso, fuel was 50 cents a gallon higher.I would have been better off going to Portsmith for half of the cost of repair and one third the cost of haul out.Disappointed and do not recommend.

We had our Catamaran here on the hard for 8 months ( Nov -2014 thru June 2015) for a variety of work. The staff was very professional and always willing to help . Greta Sommers the dockmaster was extremely helpful and responsive to any requests. The level of work was at high level in all areas : engine and saildrives ( Mark) rigging, plumbing , electrical ,bottom painting etc. Pricing was fair and discussed with us upfront. They allowed us to do some of our own work and even provided special tools and advice when requested. There is an INN associated with the Marina , where discounts are given to Marina customers. The restaurant on site provided a place to drink and relax after working on the boat with good food and friendly staff . Highly recommend GYB for major or minor work

We have been visiting GYB for over 7 years and have hauled-out 4 times for both storage and yard work.

All you can ask for, 2015-10-09
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1876)

Ivan was as reported, very helpful, 12' water at dock at low tide, diesel was 3.509, power was 235 amps. Real nice spot, rate was 1.50 per foot, electric included, probably will make this a regular stop each direction and plan on buying fuel.

Here again 10-8-15, Ivan is gone, 100 amp service available, 20' water at low tide. Diesel is $2.119 for over 100 gal. can't beat that proce. River is well marked, 7 miles from mouth and Bay.

$2.119 diesel - amazing!, 2015-10-09

Just toured around the harbor, and the price of fuel just kept dropping the further we went! Wasn't planning of filling yet, but did!

Shelter from the storm, 2015-10-07
Captain: , Portland, OR (381)

We traveled up the Sassafras to this marina after an arduous trek from Nantucket, with a nor'easter bearing down and hurricane Joaquin appearing to head our way. We ended up staying ten days, waiting out the nasty weather. And it was a very nice place to be: very secure and sheltered, great people, a very good onshore restaurant with wonderful specials (Date Night on Wednesday included a bottle of wine, two salads and two entrees for $29!). There's also a full service yard, canvas shop, and a well stocked marine store on site.

The only thing I wish they'd add is some sort of lounge to hang out in.

Best of all to us was the nearby Cross Street Food and Garden in tiny Galena, an easy bike ride from the marina. That store was wonderful! Only six weeks old, it's run by a young couple who sell their family farm's produce, as well as a nice selection of other local products: veggies, grass fed meats, pastured eggs, milk and cheese, etc. with a focus on organics. To get there, head into Galena and turn right at the light. They're on the left next to PNC Bank.

Sassy Market in town is also run by great folks, who will pick you up at the Marina and take you back, if you call them. We liked the, for their nice selection of wines, a very good deli counter, and high quality meat and chicken.

Loved the Mooring Field, 2015-09-25
Captain: , Daytona (410)

Grabbed a mooring for the night and it was perfect. Nice quiet spot with great protection. Boat traffic was light, but what there was, was very courteous. Bob, the dock master was great, very professional and knowledgeable.

The ride up the river was just picture perfect

Great Value Marina, 2015-09-21
Captain: , Hull, MA (700)

Great stopover from our run from Cape May. We enjoyed the marina for the following reasons:
1. Chance to cruise up the beautiful Sassafras River
2. Easy access to the marina and plenty of water since we draw 5 ft
3. Fixed docks are in good shape and the tidal change of 2 ft makes getting on and off easy
4. Clean restrooms and showers
5. Laundry facillities available
6. Complimentary bike renatls with baskets
7 Car ental available at $ 20/hr
8. Galena is 2 miles away were there is a good market(Sassy's) for provisions, liguor store, and a fresh farm produce store
9. Diesel $ 2.10/gal
10 Dockage Rate $1.25/ft with electric
11. two restaurants available: Kitty Nights and The Granary--both were excellent and the service was great.
12 swimming pool

1. Don't ask for a floating dock they are in poor shape
2. A very small bug/nat that is present at the marina. They are annoyong but do not bite

great stop for repairs, food and activities, 2015-09-21
Captain: , Port Credit Yacht Club, Toronto (252)

We stopped here because of the $1.25/foot rate with pool. What we got was great service with a wonderful dock master Tanya and excellent yard manager Greta. We ended up getting some engine maintenance done with Tom who was fantastic and same day canvas work. All the workmanship was very good. We also hear that others came to this marina specifically for the yard. The pool was great and they have two hour free usage of kayaks, paddle boards and bikes. The Kitty Knight restaurant at the top of the hill was excellent. The Friday night $1 oyster specials was the highlight. Groceries are just 1.5 miles up the road (turn right when leaving the marina). We recommend going to the vegetable market (turn right in the middle of town by the gas station first before heading to Sassafras Market left of the gas station to get staples and meat. So far one our our highest recommendations so far.

Atrocious Service, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Englewood, FL (905)

This marina has nice facilities & is a good value but the company needs to train its staff in customer service. The teenager who checked us in was incompetent. I can only hope this was his first day on the job, otherwise he should be fired. We had lunch at the Granary (owned by the same company) & had horrible service even though the place was almost empty. Don't expect even acceptable service here.

A great marina at a value price, 2015-05-24
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2486)

We wanted to explore the Sassafras River and decided to stay here for 2 nights. Even though it was already 'season', the rate was only $1.25 per foot, including electric (one 30A). The baths/showers were great, as was the nearby laundry (only 1 washer and dryer). The dockmaster, Tanya, was very interesting and extremely competent. All the staff we met were welcoming and helpful.

Nice protected marina, 2014-10-06
Captain: , Clayton, NY (645)

Very friendly staff and a nice marina. It is a ways in the Sassafras rive, but that made it fairly quiet on a Very windy day. There is a small grocery store in Galena about 1.5 mi away - nice bike ride or walk. There is a marine store at the marina, but there is a very complete marine store north of the marina across the bridge. They have a little bit of everything.

They were experiencing very high tides and some rain. When we got up in the morning the docks were under water. The locals who have been here for at least 3 years had never seen this happen before. NOAA was saying coastal towns had to be on alert for extra high tides.

Georgetown Yacht Basin marina, 2014-10-06
Captain: , Marblehead (147)

I could only repeat the good review here. Not only friendly, but very professional and correct. Ivan Wade runs a very good and efficient shop. Bathrooms are clean. Best value for the money. It is well worth the trek up river. Beautiful surroundings and a nice country walk to town. Twinny's Place is an excellent small rural restaurant (cash or check only); good food, quick service.

Super Helpful staff, 2014-09-25
Captain: , Mallets Bay (60)

We came to Georgetown YB to seek help with our windless. The staff were amazingly helpful. Unbelievably, the mechanic was actually waiting on the dock as we tied up and jumped right on. That's a first, usually we have to wait 6-24 hours for help!

Wished we had come here a day earlier to have time to explore.

The best marina on the river, 2014-09-19
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

If you get up the Sassafras River, this is the best stop. Diesel fuel at $3.47 if you get 100 gal+.

The pool here has a panoramic view of the river and the marina will take you across the river to The Granary for lunch or dinner.

The Kitty Knight House restaurant up the hill from the ma\rina has 1/2 price meals on Thursday nights, if you are over 65 (or look like you might be), really they will honor it if you have gray in your hair and ask for the special dinner price. I had a Delmonico steak for $13, it was delicious, cooked perfectly, the beer helped.

4th of July, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Bear Cr,MD (145)

Spent the 4th weekend at Georgetown basin. have been here many times and it never gets old. Beautiful cruise up the Sassafrass, especially in the fall..not to be missed!! The locals on our pier entertained us in the evening, we even saw Elvis perform on one of the boats!! Friendly/knowledgable staff, clean restrooms and good eating close by. the piers are getting old and in need of maintance soon. overall a grreat place to visit and enjoy. Forgot to mention the view from on top of the hill by the pool--it over looks the beautiful basin, and you can visit the ice cream shop, sit under the large tree and enjoy a summer day.

Great location, docks a bit old, 2014-07-29
Captain: , Bear, DE (70)

The location on the Sassafras River is fantastic, and the marina store well-stocked. However, many of the docks are getting long in the tooth and are showing their age.

Marina needs updating, 2014-06-06
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1897)

The marina needs some updating, the staff were friendly the restaurant food was very good but I was a little disappointed over all, enough to leave the next morning even though there was a small craft advisory in place.
The river area is very pretty and anchorages abound, be aware actual depths do not match charts by a long shot in many areas.
Their fuel price was very good at $3.49

Big Trouble, 2014-05-28
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (216)

I was heading to the fuel dock after spending two nights at The Granary. About 100 yards short of the dock both engines cut out. I dropped anchor in the channel and called the dockmaster. They brought Two Toots out and towed me to a T dock while I tried to figure out what happened. When I ran out of ideas, Ivan came by and offered up a couple of things to try. It worked. I pulled around and topped off my tanks - he offered help if it happened again on my way out. All was good - great guy.

Excellent staff (Condor-40 JAZ), 2013-12-09
Captain: , Honolulu, HI (71)

On short notice I contacted this facility to see if they could accomodate my Condor-40 tri for the winter. Dave Ellison was excellent to work with as was Cortney the dock attendant. I am super pleased to have found this marina/service facility and am confidant they are taking excellent care of my baby while I spend the winter in Hawaii. Cant wait till summer to come back and see the folks at GYB again.

Great Facility, Great Dockmaster/staff, 2013-11-30

GYB is the place to stay, 2013-10-21
Captain: , Annapolis (131)

Again Ivan is wonderful very helpful guy. He shuttled us fm our boat to the land many times in a few hours span.

Mooring ball was $1.00/ft, Diesel was $3.69. If buying over 100 gal it was $3.49. Heads and showers were very nice and clean. Mooring are removed every other year, cleaned and tested and then put back in place. Beautiful area, well protected.

Better be gold plated!, 2013-09-17
Captain: , Promised land, Pa (10)

Nice facility, set the record for fees.

A must stop, 2013-08-17
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1236)

And a weeks stay is best to understand what a nice place this is.
Ivan, the harbor master, is a very helpful fellow. Helped me with an outboard problem at no charge.
This is a very quiet place with beautiful sunsets.
Internet is good, though AT&T cell service is a bit sketchy.

Outstanding!, 2013-08-04
Captain: , Coles Point, VA (777)

Simply outstanding experience! I spent from May until August here and, to a person, not a single unfriendly moment. The facilities are solid, the marina bathrooms (especially with the amount of use they get) are top notch and clean. The docks are showing some wear, but are still quite good. Many are due to be replaced, and routine plank replacement is underway on an ongoing basis. Maintenance work quality seems high. The work done on my boat was top-line, done by a thoughtful (experienced) tech. Maintenance supervision seemed to be a bit on the wrong side of the equation, but was straightened out in time (in fairness, it was peak season right before Memorial Day when I was trying to get the boat serviced, and the manager seemed to be a bit overwhelmed--short staffed? but still friendly). Pool, fuel dock, water taxi, pump-out, dock staff, marine store, ice cream shop, event tent and bed & breakfast were all incredible. Parking can be a challenge on the weekends if you don't arrive early--the lot fills right up. A special shout-out to dockmaster/harbormaster Ivan. Speaking with Ivan is what sold me on GYB, and there was never a wrong move with him during my stay. He interrupted one of his Sunday evenings with his family to tend to a request during my visit/stay. This is 5-star service, and even while GYB is not perfect, the people make this marina worth every star.

Beautiful spot, 2013-07-09
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

We stayed a few nights on the 4th of July weekend and really enjoyed our stay. Dockmaster was very competent and friendly. The power pedestal was not working but we were able to plug into another one and were good to go. The amenities are what really make this place cool since there are so many options. The courtesy car (which rents for $20 per hour) was very nice since we needed to do major provisioning. The Kitty Night House restaurant was yummy and picturesque. The Granary restaurant re-opened on the 4th of Jly weekend but we did not make it over there. There is a launch that can take you over from this dock. The docks are mostly wood fixed and are dated, but do the job. Lots of powerboaters and wakes during the holiday weekend here. We will definitely be back.

A full-service yard that does quality work, 2013-03-31
Captain: , Georgetown, MD (133)

I've been a slipholder here for 12 years or so. A major reason I stay here - rather than at one of the many marinas around - is because this is a full-service boatyard. They have a great group of craftsman on staff, supported by a marine shop that carries pretty much every mechanical or maintenance part under the sun.

I've used them for yearly maintenance and minor repairs and have always been pleased with the work. This year I needed major work: pulling a failed generator and replacing it with a new unit. Mark (lead mechanic on the job) and Dave (repair superintendent) did a great job planning the work with me and communicating the status as the job progressed. I couldn't be more pleased by the final result. Everything was properly installed and is a better engineered installation than the factory did. The work was done promptly, neatly, and with evident care.

It's nice to pay for quality and actually get what you expect.

Great place, 2013-03-23
Captain: , Palm Coast, Florida (785)

We were going to spend three days, but spent a week. Great staff and marine store. Took advantage of the free bikes. Very secure and scenic. The restaurant had specials almost every day, we ate there three times.

Great marina!! Great Manager. Great resturant, Great places for the dogs to swim.

Excellent service and support during Sandy hurricane., 2012-10-29
Captain: , Montreal (80)

Got there to hide from Sandy hurricane since it was recommanded as an hurricane hole. Found an outstanding service and comprehension from all the staff. Paid two nights at the dock and got one free. They even offered two free nigths at the Inn for wife and children when the storm was blowing hard. I could spend all my attentions to the boat watching while the wind is blowing hard.

Would have appreciated to visit the place in better weather conditions.

Excellent Yard for Service, 2012-10-16
Captain: , Salem, MA (372)

Our engine died in the C&D canal and we where towed to GYB because the they are the only Yanmar repair facility north of Baltimore. Mark the certified Yanmar mechanic found that we had blockage in the fuel tank and got us running in no time. The facilty is great with good showers and a great marine store with a good stock of Yanmar parts.

Repaired The Shift Cables, 2012-10-01
Captain: , Magothy River (319)

On our maiden voyage with a new IO, we had problems with shifitng into reverse. Their mechanic came down to our boat, adjusted our cables and we were good to go. More importantly, the mechanic took time to explain what was happening and showed us how we could correct the problem ourselves if it reoccurred.

Good facility, well managed, not much of a town, 2012-09-20
Captain: , Muskegon, MI (2982)

Great showers, 3 nights for the price of two weekdays. Also, food at the Kitty Knight House (on site) is simply outstanding.

Great staff and service, 2012-08-24
Captain: , Portsmouth, RI (260)

Continuing our cruise north on the bay we discovered that our normal RPM was not giving the normal SOG. Called GLM seeking a short hall for prop cleaning. They were more than accommodating, interrupting their schedule and promptly solved the problem. Both the service and dock staff, Ivan the DM were professional, prompt and caring. They really cared.

Not all that - but close, 2012-06-19
Captain: , Windy (170)

This is a really great place to leave your boat. It is well protected from weather. The moorings (mushrooms) appear secure and by all accounts have ridden out recent storms without incident. The price is okay (it seems high for being 7 miles up the river but enough folks are willing to pay that it is hard to argue). The facilities are excellent. The bathrooms and showers are unmatched - sparkling clean. The launch to the mooring field is a great service (check the hours carefully to see if it will suit your needs) and most of the dockhands are capable (as always watchout for the few who aren't -- they can ruin your day or yiour gel coat pretty quickly). Ivan the dockmaster / marina manager is very helpful. The store is well stocked and prepared to bring in any parts you need quickly (though their prices don't justify ordering through them). We had a good experience (though very limited) with the yard as well. Oh, and the scenery is fantastic - great bird watching. On the down side, it is a long trip up the river to get there; the place can get a bit snooty at times which seems a bit out of line with the eastern shore. All in all, I recomend it for an extended layover without hesitation.

Perfectly Peaceful, 2012-06-05
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (386)

The Sassafras River lives up to its reputation as one of the prettiest and cleanest rivers on the Bay. We originally were going to stay one night and ended up staying 4 on one of the mooring balls. Paid for 3 nights and got 1 night free. The facilities are lovely: the cleanest private heads and showers, excellent staff, a nice pool and close to Miss Kitty Knight Restaurant which serves delicious food. We had a dinghy and did not need their tender which was quite busy going from shore to the mooring field.
Unfortunately the Granary Restaurant is closed until a new owner is found.
This is a peaceful, secure, and sheltered spot on the the Bay's eastern shore.

Moorings still .80/ft, 2012-05-13
Captain: , Germantown, TN (181)

Stayed overnight in the marina on a mooring ball. When we asked a couple of the clerks in the store about going into town, they both told us not to bother - that there wasn't anything to see or do there. We would've been better off anchoring closer to the bay. Marina does provide free water taxi to marina & store, which was very convenient

Highly Recommended, 2012-01-11

Best in the area, 2011-09-16
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

$2/ft includes electric. Diesel $4.44. Spotless heads and showers, only one washer dryer makes for long waites. A well run, friendly marina with a lovely hill top pool next to the Inn that serves good food on a terrance overlooking the harbor. Full service yard.

We were hauled out here to get our prop repaired, we were only charged for one haul out and were not charged for the slip while repairs were under way. Very good experience.

The moorings are close by, but launch service stops at 6pm on w/e so a dingy is a must. We also rented the marina van, $20/hr, twice to reprovision in Middletown. A practical, but expensive way to get more juice! We stayed 6 days and throughly enjoyed ourselves.

Suffered a lot of damage in this year's snow storms, 2011-01-26
Captain: , Newark, DE (259)

This marina suffered some significant damage in 2010's snow storms. The covered shed over one dock collapsed and taking out a number of boats with it. The Kitty Knight house restaurant is nice with good food, a nice deck with weekend bands. The ship's store is pretty decent too, with knowledgeable staff but prices are better over at Sassafras Harbor Marina's store.

Peaceful, excellent facility, 2010-10-16
Captain: , Rockland, ME (90)

Pros: 3rd generation family owned & operated, Sassafras is fresh water (!), superb service marina, fresh water, very reasonable rates, staff is friendly & helpful, clean heads, Kitty Knight House has nice restaurant & hotel. Cons: Difficult to get to/from BWI and PHL.

Moorings are very handy, 2010-08-29
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

8/29/10 - $0.80/ft with 3 for 2 special made it effectively about $20/night. Lots of boats coming and going, but everyone respected the no wake zone (amazing). Plenty of water in the mooring field (more than in channel, in fact). The launch service is very handy and seems to serve the entire harbor - the dinghy dock is small, but only really needed to launch stored dinghies. Two really good restaurants in town (live music on weekends), a small chandlery, and an ice cream shop. Nice pool. The collapsed covered slips previously mentioned appear to have new roofs but no boats (waiting for approvals maybe?) Great and handy dockmaster (Ivan, the kiwi) - good on ya!

Nice location, but..., 2010-07-16
Captain: , Bear, DE (197)

The docks that collapsed a few years ago have now collapsed again with last winter's heavy snow. Now, all docks near the drawbridge have been comdemed and all boats have been removed. There is some good skill for repair at the yard, but several locals (including myself) have had bad experiences and go elsewhere for repairs. Docking for a few nights is fine. They purchased the Kitty Knight House Inn/Restaurant 3-4 years ago and this is a great place to eat and good music on the summer weekends out on the deck overlooking the river.

Fuel is generally higher on the Sassafras then other nearby places, so come loaded.

We came upon Georgetown Yacht Basin quite by accident. We were in the Sassatrass River and fowled our prop. It turned out that we had a serious problem( thrust bearing) that had not been repaired properly 2 years ago in CT. We found excellent mechanics with many years of experience. While there ,we asked them to do other work, electrical as well as plumbing. We liked their work so much that we returned to Georgetown (way out of our way) just to have them install paravanes and install new electonics. Our feeling is when you find a yard that knows what they are doing, let them do your work.

The marina is great, but there is no town to visit here without a car. Be wary of buying fuel anywhere on the Sassafras River. Call in advance for prices - it was $1 higher than anywhere else in 2008.

The Sassafras River is truly a gem and not to be missed. This marina I could pass next time. The best part was the Pool but be prepaired to hike straight up the hill. The admiral and I must have timed this August tirp with a spider hatch or something. I never had so any spiders and their mess find my boat...ever!
If your into insects...this is your place!

I picked up a mooring here, eighty cents per foot per night. Great ships store. Nice restaurant at Kitty Knight a short walk up the hill. Nothing else nearby except another restaurant, Granery, in a nearby marina. If you need to provision, the marina has a van that you can rent for $15/hour with a $10 minimum. The town of Galena is two miles away.
Great gunkholing under the bridge and up the Sassafras River.

Beautiful cruise up the river to a lovely mooring. The staff was very helpful and the facilities were great. Free launch picks you up at your mooring and takes you back. There are a couple of nice restuarants which the launch will also take you to. It's about a 2 mile walk into the closest town. But it is worth it to visit the Amish market -- great meat counter.
