Reviews for George Kemp Marina
the staff makes this one a great place, 2017-08-26
Captain: , Muskegon MI (80)

The staff goes out of their way to help. The bathrooms are clean and modern. They have a whole rack of bikes to use. Location offers a great view of the freighters going by, and they might rock you a bit from time to time.

Very Convenient, 2017-08-18
Captain: , Sacramento, CA (384)

Location is easy walking to museums and town. Facility is extremely clean and wel kept. Staff is very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpfull. 10'' of water throughout the marina. Would be a welcome site coming off a rough Lake Superior, a long day, or just for a restful stop.

Quality Facilities and Staff, 2017-07-22
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4307)

All of the staff members are attentive, knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Dock are in great shape, electrical service good, and the head the cleanest we have experienced.

We had serious provisioning needs in preparation for a cruise to Lake Superior where nothing would be available. The staff got us to a distant, new Meijer store, where we found ample supplies and great prices.

We extended our planned stay due to the hospitality and interesting events in town.

A Good Stop near the Locks, 2017-07-22
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens (605)

Great location when using the locks. Easy in and out and did not have any problem with current at the entrance. Great location for exploring town and the marina is nice and clean. Would stop by here anytime. Plenty of water at entrance and in the marina basin.

Captain: , Transient - Plymouth, Mi (811)

Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Prices reasonable. Veru clean, showers clean, grounds well kept. Overall very nice Restaurants nearby. Like Cheboygan County Marina, George Kemp calls around to get fuel prices, but sets theirs lower than the competition, whereas Cheboygan places theirs at the higher of the competition.

A welcome stop, 2017-06-10
Captain: , Bayfield, WI (340)

Very welcoming staff. We were immediately greeted at the fuel dock by 2 marina staff, who also assisted at our slip without us asking. They also gave us a map of Sault Ste. Marie and suggestions of where to eat and find the supplies we wanted. The grounds and building were kept up well and were very clean. We ended up staying longer than anticipated and they had no problems accommodating us. The downtown area is a bit of a walk but has several restaurants, a NAPA store, several banks, lots of gift shops, and the Soo Locks visitors center, where you can watch the boats and lakers lock through (and quite a nice park there, too). There's a lot of historical sites you can visit, and a museum ship right near the marina. A welcome stopping point after 2 long, cold weeks on Lake Superior.

Great Marina in an odd town, 2016-08-13
Captain: , Pittsburgh (564)

The Marina and staff are very user friendly and helpful. The location is great for museums and watching the Soo locks.... as long as you don't want to take the dog anywhere. The town is very anti pouch for some reason and the lock parks are under the Coastguard control so no guns ( I understand) and no dogs?? To take our dogs for a walk and an off leash run was a 3 mile walk out of town.
The Main Street is very tourist focused with fudge and ice cream, and faux antique shops.
Certainly worth a visit once.

A VERY nice marina, 2016-07-22
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

I agree with the previous few posters regarding the marina and the town. We were really surprised just how nice it, and the staff, were.

We arrived mid-afternoon and did not spend much time sight-seeing, but I could see where 1.5 days here could be interesting.

well run, clean and good diesel prices, 2015-09-06
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

we liked staying in this marina. staff was first rate and very helpful, the docks were in good condition and it was fairly well protected. the museum ship next door is well worth a visit. got to see the big freighters moving through the channel and positioning themselves for the locks. town was also fairly nice and the visitor center and viewing area for the locks was top notch.

We love this place, 2015-08-11
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

Too bad more Loopers don't get to Sault Ste. Marie. It's charming. The town is like a 1950's beach town with salt water taffy, funny gift stores and a great activity in watching the monstrous freighters lock through. The marina itself was also very nice. Good showers, clean facility, well maintained docks and good service from the dock staff. And even the fuel price was good -- $2.99 a gallon. The butcher in town -- at Neville's -- was one of the best we've been to. Fantastic steaks. And good access to full service pharmacies, good grocery store, great hardware and terrific and inexpensive taxis. What more can you ask for!

Nice Visit, 2014-08-13
Captain: , Elk Rapids (130)

We spent three nights here and enjoyed it. Restaurants are at least a half mile walk. Antlers was great food but too many stuffed animals on the wall watching you eat! The Palace was one of the best Tex-Mex places we've been in quite a while.

Cabs are available at $7 flat rate anywhere in the city, so getting around can be done.

Staff was helpful (a special thanks to Dennis for tips on running the river up from Detour) and eager to make our stay enjoyable.

great marina, 2014-08-10
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

Nice staff. Loaner bikes. Good laundry. Toured the historic buildings next to marina and it was excellent. There is no way to do any serious provisioning without a taxi. I took a bike to grocery store and could manage only two small bags. Nice grocery store though. Could not find any nearby restaurants.

Great marina!, 2014-07-10
Captain: , Montague, MI (200)

When we arrived they helped with customs check in, refueling and getting us in our slip. Nice little walk into town and they really have everything from gift shops to restaurants and the tour of the locks, very nice!

Great Place, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Monticello, IN (140)

Really nice well protected marina. Josh and the rest of the staff are great and keep the facilities spotless. Location is handy to downtown and to watch the ships entering and leaving the locks. Lots of good boating in the area. This is one of my favorite marinas, and just spent several days there this September.

Good Marina on the US Side, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Milwaukee, WI (358)

Convenient location close to downtown. Clean facility, helpful staff. The full size grocery store is quite a hike, but the marina has loaner bikes that make access much easier. I'd stop here again, though I have not been to the Canadian side before writing this review.

Excellent Marina, 2013-06-17
Captain: , Pultneyville, NY (852)

Friendly and helpful staff. Competitive fuel prices. Spotless restrooms/showers. Close to town and restaurants. Great spot to tie up.

great place to get fuel, 2012-08-27
Captain: , Bay City Mi (30)

We stop here on our way around Superior, fuel prices were $3.74 per gallon, we filled up on our way to Superior and on the way back.

Great place close to Town, 2012-08-23
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

Nice place to stay with clean restrooms and Laundry. Very helpful Staff.

Very Nice Marina, 2011-08-13
Captain: , Annapolis (208)

Another nice Michigan State marina. Several interesting attractions nearby. Downtown area within a good walk, although the city is doing major sewer work so some of the roads are just dirt mud piles. Saff at the marina was very helpful. Free loaner bikes

Captain: , Hammond Bay (1841)

Excellent marina with gas, diesel, and pump-outs available. Near town with groceries and restaurants within walking distance. Just a few hundred yards from the US locks so it is a quick access to the locks. The staff can arrange for mechanic's service if needed.

George Kemp Marina, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

This is an okay facility with great access to town and the restaurants. If you are entering the locks for Superior in the morning, this is the right place to stay. Local people are wonderfully helpful to boaters.

good place to stop before/after the locks, 2009-07-13
Captain: , White Bear Lake, MN (102)
