Reviews for Galley Stores and Marina
Small and quiet, 2017-05-11
Captain: , Port Aransas, TX (1283)

Stayed 1 week, 4/29 - 5/6/17 and enjoyed our stay on calm wind days. Weather was unsettled several days with strong south and southwest winds and marina was very rocky-rolly. Calm days were gorgeous! Location is convenient to town; Galley Store is a treat, especially Friday night wine tastings. Rest rooms need to be cleaned more often and more thoroughly. Wish you had a laundry. We had no problems with the wifi. Pumpout at our slip was great.

Management response:
Thanks for your feedback - we appreciate your stay with us!

A charming marina in a charming town, 2016-11-06
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

It has been some time since we last visited New Bern - Galley Stores and Marina was under construction then. It was great to see what they have done. It is a small boutique marina only a couple blocks from downtown yet more peaceful and quiet than the other option. On site is a lovely gourmet store. If you love wine and/or beer you must stop in. They have a large and unusual selection unlike any place I have seen. Persimmon's is a high-end restaurant also on site. And of course there is the quaint town of New Bern with many restaurants, shops, and beautiful neighborhoods to explore. If you enjoy Indian food do not miss Bay Leaf. A Harris Teeter, Publix, and other stores are an easy trip over the bridge using the courtesy car. This is a great stop to spend a few days or a week on your way south.

Management response:
We enjoyed having the Siegels here during their stay in New Bern. Thanks for your kind comments and best of luck in 2017 with your cruising -- and especially for keeping us all informed on boating trends and technology!

Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (180)

We stay at Galley Stores and Marina every visit to New Bern, NC. The first thin I noticed on this visit isd the wifi has been upgraded. It is fast and reliable. The location of the marina is another plus. It is within walking distance to restaurants, bars and shopping. We wioll return to Galley Stores and Marina when we return to New Bern, NC.

Management response:
Thank you for those nice comments. Happy boating and visit us again soon!

Love this Marina, 2016-07-04
Captain: , Winston Salem (10)

It is our marina of choice in New Bern. The docks are in good shape, the trash is always emptied, the bathrooms always clean and the new wifi is excellent. And it is a pleasure to not have to contend with the Cunningham Bridge.

Management response:

Great Facilities and Location, 2015-10-25

One of favorite stops. Nice floating docks and helpful staff. Many historic sites, good resturants and bars, and shops within walking distance. Marina car ( SUV ) available if you need tranportation.
Mark and Stan do it right.

Galley Store Maarina (Skipjack Marina), 2015-09-07
Captain: , Oriental, NC (45)

We stayed one night in early September. New Bern is a really great stop, with many good restaurants and a beautiful downtown within close walking distance. The marina was good too! The facility is very nice, with well laid out floating docks. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the store has a wonderful wine section. The only negative was that there was not a sign of internet at our slip. We are making plans to go back to the "Ghost Walk" near Halloween!

Management response:
Thanks for your feedback! We're working on the wi-fi.

Wonderful stay, 2015-06-04
Captain: , Little River, SC (268)

Stayed two nights 5-26 and 5-27-15. We really enjoyed our stay. We were the only transient boat at the marina for both days. First night the wind driven waves made us rock and roll pretty badly but neither of us really mind a little rocking. Next night wind changed and was very peaceful. Great location offers an easy walk to downtown where you will find great restaurants, shops, and Tyron%u2019s Palace. New Bern is a must visit little NC town. One of the friendliest towns I have ever been to. Everyone was great. The owner Mark came by our first day and introduced him self, which was a very nice touch. Restrooms could use a good steam cleaning. We plan on returning to New Bern in the future and would stay here again. The upper Neuse River is a very easy and beautiful cruse. We really enjoyed the trip.

Management response:
Thanks for your feedback -- we'll be glad to address your suggestion!

New Bern is great Marina is OK, 2015-04-29
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1804)

New Bern is a terrific stop, great town, many good restaurants and Tyron Palace to visit, plus the Central Coastal NC state museum. Definitely visit both.
The staff at the Marina is friendly and helpful. The free courtesy car is helpful. Outside of town about a 5 mile drive are most of the stores, Walmart, Lowes, West Marine, food stores etc. Two negatives-- The outer dock is covered in bird droppings and birds, disgusting to walk to and from your boat. This problem needs to be addressed. The design of the marina allows some waves in if they are from the Northerly direction, not a big issue but did effect us a little.
Convenient location. We were disappointed in the highly recommended on site restaurant but we found several very good restaurants in town.

Management response:
We have power-washed the dock to keep it as clean as possible from the birds
and are exploring other options to address this issue. It really is limited only to the outer-most dock space. Thanks for your comments -- we welcome them!

Although close to everything with a wonderful restaurant on site, they quoted $2/ft on the telephone and did not offer any AGLCA or MTOA dockage discounts.

Nice quiet marina, 2014-11-04
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (1190)

Stayed for 2 days and enjoyed New Bern. It's a very nice town with friendly people, nice old homes and a small shopping district. Several choices for dining out as well. No answer on the VHF as we approached the marina but a quick call had someone on the docks right away. Very friendly service, neat clean modern docks, and convenient to town. The owner Mark shared his cell phone number in the event we might need something. He also pointed out the highlights of New Bern. The marina sells diesel and gas. Pump outs are $5.00 and done in the slip. The heads, whcih we didn't use, are in the building that houses the office and a small convenience store. They have some food and a very nice selection of wine and beer. While they have WiFi we couldnt pick it up at our slip. Cell signal for AT&T is strong throughout the town. Overall a very nice and worthwhile visit.

Nice Marina, nice town, 2014-09-01
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

We spent 4 days at Galley Store Marina. Stan helped us dock. The owner Mark came out to the dock and greeted us and gave us some information about the town and oriented us as to where we were in relation to major attractions. We felt very welcome. The marina is in very good condition and is located nicely for visiting the town by foot. The marina does have a loaner car. Be sure to visit Tryon Palace. it is worth the walk. Lots of nice restaurants to choose from. Well worth the 23 miles from the ICW to visit.

Excellent Convenient Store, 2014-08-29
Captain: , Oriental,NC (588)

Huge beer cooler with great selection of craft beer. Extensive wine and cheese selection, with some frozen foods and snacks. Great store.

Nice Spot!, 2014-07-06
Captain: , Heathsville VA (80)

We recently cruised the area and spent two nights at the marina at the Galley Stores and Marina. The marina is clean and relatively new, with easy access. They cater to transient boats, which is especially nice. The dockmaster, Mark Mangum, met us at the dock and helped us tie up. He offered us the use of a car for a trip to the Food Lion and pointed out the many local highlights, including the farmer's market, which was within walking distance. The restaurant at the dock, Persimmons, was wonderful, and the gourmet shop associated with the marina not only had excellent stock but as well a terrific wine tasting on Friday night! Great fun! My only mild complaint is that the wifi connection was virtually non-existent, but the overall experience was well worth it!

Great re-built marina, 2014-05-21

Very customer service oriented and friendly dockmaster, Jesse. All top notch and clean facilities. Leaving 5/25 after a month here.

a gem in New Bern, 2014-05-13
Captain: , Silverthorne, CO (419)

Nice small marina with great docks, $5 pumpout which reaches to your slip on north dock. Galley Stores has gourmet foods, great wine selection, craft beers. Two bathroom/showers in building. Easy walk to charming, historical town, Tryon Palace, history museum, nice shops, many choices for restaurants. Count the bears in town. Check out the hardware store. Very enjoyable for two nights. Would have been 5 stars if wi-fi worked at the boat.

Discovered too Late!, 2013-08-16
Captain: , Gulfport, MS (321)

After about a week at the New Bern Grand Marina, we walked over to the Galley Stores to check it out. What a find! The owner, Mark, was extremely helpful and friendly. The marina is small but very well kept. While it appears to be more exposed to south winds, we didn't see the boats bouncing any more than we did at the Grand, so that would not be a concern. The onsite Galley Stores is very well stocked with quality wines and gourmet items at very reasonable prices, and also includes an entire walkin cooler of various craft beers. Prisicilla appears to be continually enhancing the wine and gourmet operation, so I expect it will continue to be an outstanding attraction.

At the time, the slip prices were better than the Grand. There is no monthly "pedestal" fee, and I suspect the metered electricity is less (we were charged $165 for one month at the Grand, running one AC during the day - much more than our monthly bill for our house!).

The only downside is no laundry. However, Mark assured me they could provide courtesy transportation to a laundry just up the street, or to a major grocery store for reprovisioning. Also, the marina is still within easy walking distance of everything in downtown New Bern.

Had we not signed a month contract, we would have switched marinas in a heartbeat. As it is now, this would be our first choice marina for visiting New Bern.

Good price and OK marina, 2013-06-28
Captain: , Sunset Beach, NC (1146)

New floating docks and plenty of space when we came here the week before 4th of July. Parked our 36 foot boat in a slip that is really made for a 65 footer so it was easy backing in. No dedicated dock staff since this is really not a transient marina so you must call them on the phone and you won't get docking instructions until ou see the guy on the dock who I suspect pointed to the first empty slip he saw. They might have put me on the face had I not just pulled into the inside. However, the owner (I assume) gave me his card and told me to call him 24/7 if I needed anything. Easy walk to town. Good price at 1.50 a foot. No complaints.

Nice town to visit, 2013-06-13
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1550)

Not so much the marina itself. We had called for over an hour the day before, busy signal every time. After calling the morning of our visit were instructed to call on radio upon arrival. Radio calls were unanswered so we finally docked at the fuel pumps. No signs so ended up in the restuarant, they had no answers except the office was in the store across the parking lot. Guy running the store was busy but finally got someone. Sign on the pumps said no fuel but he said they were working now. Gas is street gas with ethanol, additive is added to your tank after filling up. We requested the fuel discount advertised for overnight stay and were refused. Dave at the store said no discounts were available, this even after misquoting price over phone earlier.
The town was however a nice visit. There is great history building with several video displays and a small theater presentation. Lots of small shops and historic buildings for sightseeing.
The docks are in good condition with wide walkways and fairways, showers clean and in good condition. Overall a fun visit to the town but not a marina I have a great desire to revisit.

Definitely Would Stay Here Again if in New Bern, 2013-04-19
Captain: , Houston TX (349)

We spent several months here over the 2012-2013 winter before continuing north. The docks are great and every slip on the north pier has the ability to pump out in the slip. The bathrooms/showers are clean and very nice and the wifi works. The store has an excellent wine and appetizer selection along with a small selection of regular groceries and offers a free wine tasting every Friday night that draws quite a crowd from the surrounding houses. Mark and his crew went out of their way to take care of us starting with meeting us at the dock to catch lines and direct us. There is a good restaurant at the marina (Persimmons) and the town of New Bern is an easy walk, with several good restaurants and unique shops. We could always get fresh produce at the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. However, there is not a full-service grocery store or laundry facility within walking distance and the streets in that direction are not very bike-friendly. Be advised that if the wind is over 20 kts and has an east component, it can get a bit lumpy inside the harbor. It was a wonderful stay and if we are in New Bern again we will definitely stay here.

Great Place to visit, 2013-04-16
Captain: , Port Royal, SC (231)

The Town of New Bern is quaint with many excellent resturants and things to see, e.g., drug store where Pepsi was created. The Gall Stores couldn't be any more accomodating. Sheltered dockage with needing a bridge opening and just paces from downtown. Store is well stocked, especially for the wine and cheese folks out there. Clean and nice heads with showers. Reasonable rates and deals available depending on the length of stay. 20 mile transit up the river is worth it if like us you need a day or so to chill and restock.

great place, 2012-11-01

we just spent 5 months here and loved it Mark and his team do the best they know how to make things right, just ask.Easy walk into town with terrific restaurants and shopping We have come to love the town.

Great Marina in a great Town, 2012-06-29
Captain: , Southport, NC (716)

I took a chance on this marina and we were very glad we did. The dockMaster bent over backwards helping us dock and hook up cables. The Marina is located out in the river which provided a nice breeze in the evening. We toured the town after the Marina let us borrow 3 nice bicycles. We saw New Bern and ate at a couple nice restuarants. The Marina also has a great store called the Galley. Over all the Marina was very quiet and no wave action was felt. Another bonus is you dont need to go under the low bridge and time your trip. The docks are in great shape and easy to get in and out. We highly recommend this marina and if we go back to New Bern, we will certainly came back to Galley Stores Marina. Thanks to Mark (DockMaster) for the Hospitiality.

Good news and bad news, 2011-10-31
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (1332)

New Bern is a terrific small town and worthy of a visit.

The GOOD NEWS about this marina:

--It's conveniently located outside the restricted drawbridge which leads into New Bern's innter harbor.
--New floating docks with enough room for safe maneuvering
--Excellent 240V+ electric and city water.
--Nice specialty convenience store with a thoughtful selection right on-site
--Fuel on-site
--A restaurant on-site and it gets good reviews, though it was not open the evening we were at the marina.
--An easy walk into town.
--A friendly manager who really seems to want provide good service for everyone using the marina.

--Deja vu: as happened to someone else a month ago, we called, made reservations, then as advised we called a few minutes before our scheduled 5 pm arrival and got no answer on the radio, no answer on the phone line used to make reservations. The other marina offered to call them on the landline, but we declined since we had let the phone ring 20 times with no answer. We arrived with no one on the dock to point us to the right slip and no one to handle lines, picked a slip and stayed the night. When we checked in next morning, neither the clerk nor the manager had a clue as to why the dockhand wasn't there to greet us and handle lines--and we never got an answer on that. To be sure, we were very unhappy.
--The marina, though new and generally in good shape, shows evidence of poor management--a dangerous missing plank (not marked with a cone), cobwebs in the electrical hook-ups, every fire extinguisher box on the piers was missing its extinguisher, overflowing trash cans on the docks, no signage identifying the marina or the office, and an out-of-date website with an erronious URL link to the marina.
--Confusion about the name of the marina. On ActiveCaptain it's called Galley Stores and Marina, but on the company's own website it's listed as Skipjack Landing. Who to believe?

Bottom line:
From a physical standpoint, this is a very good marina. With good management and attention to detail, both of which seem to be missing, if could be superb.

In case you get no answer, here's a good number to have for general manager Mark Magnum (posted with his permission): 252-670-2519. Mark says if you get no answer to your calls or find nobody there to take your lines he'll come down and take care of you personally. I believe him.

Would we stay there again? Undecided.

We left after 15 minutes, 2011-09-21
Captain: , Buffalo (1154)

I phoned for a reservation, and was told that we would be welcome and to call on the VHF when we got close. I called, and called, to no answer until another marina offered to phone them for us. We finally managed to make contact by phone, and were advised to tie up anywhere we wanted. No one came to help us, but there were only two other boats there, so we had a lot of choices. We no sooner had tied up that than someone came to order us to move. So I phoned the marina again, and the girl that answered told me that she was new, and wasn't sure that they had a marina. Finally she said she would check with a supervisor, and we were directed to another slip. We decided that we had had enough, so we moved to another marina.

The marina is very small but nice. The docks are in good condition, but good luck in persuading someone to direct you to the proper slip.

Nice floating new docks near the Historic District of New Bern. Great rates. Restaurang next door. Airport close by.

Nice Location, 2011-06-09
Captain: , Hampton, VA (40)

When we arrived at the marina, Mark (owner / manager) was on hand to assist us into a slip. During our stay he, and his staff, could not have been more accommodating. Our arrival timing enabled us to enjoy a price "special" (stay two nights and get the third free). The marina site also hosts a well-stocked convenience store and a nice restaurant. The marina is conveniently located, within a block or two, of the New Bern Historic District. There is plenty to see and do in this boater friendly town.

Nice Stop in New Bern, 2011-06-01
Captain: , Between Boats, USA (623)

The Galley Store is a nice place to stop, but until traffic lets up, it's going to be a little rolly. Plan on stopping by for Mumfest and July 4th. It is quite a party. Everything is very close and New Bern is a great boating town. We stop here often to resupply instead of driving to the grocery store and will continue to visit in the future.

Floating docks and easy access to the city, 2011-05-14
Captain: , Jaluit (622)

At the time of this review, the satelite picture was taken before the marina was built which is why you can't see it where the marker is set. On the pier you can see now sits an enormous restaurant mentioned in other reviews.

My big boat comment 60+', spin your boat in the fairway before you get to the northern slips. There is about 120' across. Back in to the slip if your power is in the stern.

Excellent Choice, 2011-04-21
Captain: , Chesapeake (261)

NB is a little off the beaten path. It'll cost you a day, but certainly worth the trip. Great town to stock up on almost everything.

Clean, wide floating docks. Pump out dockside. Water,50/30 amp power also diesel and gas available. Dockage at competitive rates.
Gourmet store offers wide variety of products for the galley , wine cellar and beer cooler.
Fine restaurant, Persimons, on site, who in addition offer a well priced "bar Menu".

The historic town of. New Bern offers many attractions for the visitor within walking distance of the marina.
The personal service offered by Mark, the Dock Master is outstanding, he cares for every boat at his docks. In our opinion this extra servce is well worth the 5th star.
Be aware that electricity is expensive at 12c per KW. Courtesy car is only available subject to Dock Masters daily schedule .

Marina was in a perfect location convenient to all the attractions of New Bern. We stayed with our cousin so really didn't use the facilities at the marina but understand they are great. New Bern is a delightful town to visit.

If your stopping into New Bern, this is a must. Mark, the Dockmaster, makes your stay an easy one. Great grocery store with all you may require. New restaurant opening soon, can't wait to try there menu. Pump out dockside on there floating docks (these docks extend far below the waterline making the wake a minimum). Walking is easy to everything....we will be back.

What a great place to visit and what a great marina. Mark, the Dockmaster, and his team went above and beyond to take care of us! Mark even went so far as to deliver the morning paper to the boat and put in a custom beer order for us! Well stocked store for the basics. No laundry but Mark and his team will shuttle you to the laundromat! Pump out at the slip. New restaurant on site to open 7-2010. The marina monitors ch. 16. With the ActiveCaptain co-op deal you can's beat the price of .75 per foot based on a 2-day stay!

Galley Stores - Great Experience, 2010-02-21
Captain: , Minnesott Beach, NC (10)

First time visiting this facility. Convenient, great courteous service. They have fuel, pump out and fresh water (something my home marina shuts off over the winter). I was also impressed with their store which has a good variety of food and beverage items as well as marine supplies.

Nice and new, 2009-06-01
Captain: , Dallas, TX (102)

Best location of the New Bern marinas with a very nice on site small grocery. Brand new floating docks with all electrical options and plenty of cleats. Good pump out system, available in-slip for larger boats. You avoid dealing with the bridge construction, and when it is finished, bridge openings. Short walk to good restaurants, great hardware store, and other services. They offer a fuel discount for marina tenants, and want to cater to seasonal and transient boats. We have used both of the other marinas nearby and this currently is the best all around value and facility.
