Reviews for Ft George Island Marina
Great staff!, 2017-05-05
Captain: , Edgewater, NJ (100)

This is an out of the way marina. What it does have are a great staff who will help out any way possible and it's only a 5 minute walk to the Sandollar Restaurant which is one of the best!

Helpful staff. Strong current., 2016-11-22
Captain: , Hamilton (348)

We were here for a couple of nights in connection with our haulout next door at St Johns Boat Co.

Staff were helpful and pleasant. Several of the docks were damaged by hurricane Matthew, but ours was fine.

Main issue was the current. As a cat we were on the t-end, and the river current was very fierce at full ebb and flow. This was not comfortable for sleeping. If one were on one of the inner slips it seemed to be much better, due to protection from the other docks.

Hurricane Matthew damage, otherwise great!, 2016-10-29
Captain: , Seven Oaks, South Carolina (245)

2016-10-27: Stayed at this marina and found staff and facilities top-notch. Only problew was lack of water to slip, two docks remain damaged by Hurricane Matthew. Clean showers and courtesy washer and dryer, plus detergent. Good restaurant within short walk, though not much else around other than boat repair.

Great convenient stopover, 2015-11-11
Captain: , Merritt Island, FL (10)

We sailed from Annapolis bound for Ft Lauderdale when we ran into a little enginge trouble on a 54 ft Hylas saiilboat. We went into the St Johns river and spent the night at Ft George Island Marina. The Manager - Gage and his staff of Brian and Brittany really went above and beyond in helping us find a mechanic, special tools, and parts and oil. The current/tide was brisk but not bad. The showers and free laundry and convenient bar/grill (short 2 minute walk) was an added plus. We will make it a stopping point again on our next passages. Again, I cannot say enough about Gage and his crew- thank you! Highly recommeded in spite of the quick tide and current.

Fantastic Staff, 2015-07-11
Captain: , Toronto (20)

I stayed here in January 2015 for a week on route to FL.
This was a happy stop as weather straed to warm up and I really enjoyed my time here.
I was the only one tied up here during my stay, so it was quiet.
The place is very clean. It's small but the staff is great, one of them was nice enough to pick me up some groceries to fill up my stash, this was great help as there really is no stores around.
The small "Shack" restaurant across the river is awesome, otheriwse eveyrthing is pretty low key... except the Navy :)

Good marina with challenging current and wake issues, 2015-04-25
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1181)

Clean marina with slip side pump out on floating docks convenient to the inlet. Good help by marina staff getting in which is very much needed if berthing not at slack tide. The marina is on the outside of the curve and the current is SWIFT, especially when the St. John River ferry leaves from this side for the south side of the river. Their wakes just add to the velocity. Docking can be a challenge.

Further, Jax harbor pilots are berthed directly across the river and could not care less if their wakes rock your boat and do they ever. They act as if the St. John's is their private drag strip, as a result it's like riding a wild horse at times inside the boat when they go by. And the pilots work 24/7.

Last, the Mayport Naval Station choppers are often airborne and loud, but as dark approaches they seem to land for the evening.

Otherwise, clean marina with slip side pump out

Helpful staff, 2014-02-17
Captain: , Mayport Florida (452)

Nice modern facilities with helpful and friendly staff. Pulled in for fueling and pump out only. Valvtec on sight which was a bonus. However, even our 1 hour stay on the outer dock gave me concern with significant wave action due to weather and shipping in the river. Would definetely think twice about spending the night unless I could secure an inboard berth during calm conditions.

Convenient, 2014-01-16
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1583)

Got towed here in an emergency. Spent 1 nite on the outside dock. Staff was friendly and helpful Current was strong and several wakes from passing tuga and ships. Noisy helicopter practicing take offs and landing across the river. We had a peaceful nite and left at first light so I cannot rate shore facilities. Pump out was free sith stay.

Ft. George Island marina, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Freeport, Maine (175)

Interestin spot presently under the control of a bank. Facilities are very clean, nicely kept up, and the staff are skilled and attentive. The great feature is location relative to the mouth of the St. John River in that you are only a bit over a mile from open water. The downside is the unbelievably strong ebb current in the St. John. When we came in the current was running about 4 knots and was slightly oblique to the face floats. With a heavy draft sailing vessel such as ours, there would have been no way to get inside and try to line up with a slip... absolutely impossible. The other downside is the heavy commercial traffic on the river at all hours. Between the current and the huge wakes, it felt like we were at sea all night and fairly rough seas at that. The original owners seemed to have picked a very tough spot to build a marina.

Great Staff, Great Facilities, Bumpy Ride, 2013-05-01
Captain: , JACKSONVILLE (21)

We picked up a transient spot here in May 2013 with another boat we were crusing with. Gage was extremely helpful in getting us in, staying late because we got a late start, and overall great customer service. The facilities are nice and clean, unlike other marinas.

The only thing that I can say, is that the transient spots are on the face docks, and they are exposed to some pretty nasty wakes from the large ships and winds from the East. At some points, I was afraid that the boat was going to hop up on the floating dock. Very unnerving.

However, if you are planning on stopping in for a few hours and going to the Sand Dollar for food, I would highly recommend grabbing a spot here. The service can't be beat.

Giving it 5 stars because the bumpy ride is not their fault.

Easy, convenient stop, 2013-03-13
Captain: , Charleston, SC (334)

Needed to stop for the night. Docked on the outside, not too choppy or nasty but a pretty ripping current. Staff was great. Showers are clean and nice. Laundry is free in real actual residential machines. Both however, are only available during business hours when staff is there.

A gas staion is about a 10 minute walk out to the left.

Strong Current, busy river, 2012-12-21
Captain: , Bristol, RI (431)

Needed a place to tie up for the night and this marina is just inside the inlet. Lightly staffed on Dec 18 when we arrived, but Mike was on the face dock to help us when we arrived. Current rips trhough here and freighters, tugs and other boats create wakes, most not too bothersome, but one really slammed our boat. Facilities are clean (nice shower) but only open during business hours when staff is there. As stated in another review, laundry is free. Good for an overnight.

Work in Progress, 2012-12-07
Captain: , Charleston, SC (20)

First off, the manager Marcus is wonderfully competent and professional. The location is excellent for cruising in or out quickly to the Atlantic. Less than 1.5 nm you can clear the jetties and be safely sailing the ocean blue.
Facility was built just as the economy was tanking, so the restaurant and other amenities have yet to be completed. Nice clean showers, only problem was they are only open when the marina office is.
We took the outside dock and did have some moderate rocking and rolling all night, but for us it helps us sleep. This is a major shipping channel. there is not much within walking distance. One restaurant/bar. Great stop for one night. Say hi to Marcus for us.

Nice folks and very helpful. Facilities are nice and reasonable.

Very accomodating!, 2012-05-31
Captain: , Chicago (270)

The marina is very well kept up, laundry is first rate and free! Restrooms are clean. Docks are exposed to wakes from passing boat traffic. The marina staff is the absolute best!

1st Class Facility, 2012-01-06
Captain: , Jacksonville,Florida (155)

Great facility. Staff is very helpful and great to deal with. Current is very active

Nice, but strong current, 2011-07-27
Captain: , Kemah, TX (622)

Spent the night here. Nice docks, pleasant staff, reasonable rates. Currently under bankruptcy control by banks, but working hard to make it pay off. Current staff was available, if needed, at any time 24 hours a day. Strong current if you pick the wrong time to enter or exit the slips. May be challenging.
